Here's a thought I've had for a while, and I'd like to hear from people who have done either it or similar in the past:

What if you took a non-combat focused system (Fate or whatever), in which everyone plays characters who have a gaming group together who play D&D 3.5 on the regular?

Basically it would allow one (me) to switch up between a high fantasy story and a more mundane one within the same game, hopefully satisfying everyone at a real-life table that has... rather diverse tastes.

Instant thought (https://xkcd.com/244/) :smalltongue:

My understanding of Fate is that it can do just about anything, but the experts on it are probably down in General Roleplaying.

I used Fate as an example more than anything. Any generic RPG system will do. 3.5 is set in stone, though, hence why I brought it here.

I guess if you really want your group to play alternate games, but don't want to admit that one game isn't enough, pretending the two games are actually part of the same game by making more work for yourself with an additional layer or roleplaying is a good enough solution.

Could you go David Lynch and have the “inner” game leak into the “outer” game?

Once you recognize that your main character’s real life, when he’s not playing D&D, is important enough to care about, you’re going to start wanting to have a real life yourself.

Xzibit and that show were almost as fun as the memes they spawned, which is pretty rare. ;D

Reminds me of the Flux campaign, in which 3 to 5 (If I remember correctly) games are made incarnations of a setting that undergoes flux, so an Eberron Wizard might remember being a White Council Wizard in Harry Dresden RPG, or a Mage in the WoD, or whatever.
