I'm a little confused regarding the Undying Patron for the Blood Hunter.

Specifically, this ability:

"Whenever you reduce a hostile creature to 0 hit points with a weapon attack, and kill it, you regain hit points equal to your crimson rite damage die."

(Emphasis mine.)

What puzzles me is that the underlined part seems either redundant or impossible. If the DM plays it that monsters reduced to 0hp are just dead, then there doesn't seem any point differentiating between a monster reduced to 0hp and a monster killed outright, as they would amount to the same thing. However, if monsters get Death Saves, then surely killing a monster with the same attack that reduces it to 0hp is impossible and so the ability is worthless. :smallconfused:

Is there a ruling on how this ability is supposed to work?

It’s a flavor thing. When you extinguish it’s life force, it’s dead. Right?

With melee attacks, you can choose to do nonlethal damage. You say you hit someone with the flat of the blade of your short sword as opposed stabbing them, for example.

Not so with ranged attacks or spells. But for melee attacks, you can choose to do nonlethal.
