A dark shadow has fallen upon the Empire.

The immortal Emperor - Hongse Lao - has entered his decade-long hibernation. The Emperor’s hand picked Regent has been murdered by a rampaging horde of Kongren. Although the invasion was blunted, the threat of another large-scale attack is ever present. The new Regent - General Tsong - rules with an iron grip. The nobles and peasants of the empire chafe under the boot of tyranny. Any threat to the Regent’s rule is met with overwhelming force. Dissension is all but illegal. Sensing the weakness and disunity within the Empire, dark forces have crawled into the wilds - haunting the forests, stalking the old roads and plundering outlying settlements...

You are adventurers. Most of you do not know each other. You were hired by Captain Du Fen to escort several convicted bandits from the town of Pinggou to the Zhiming Prison Camp, near the boomtown of Yule, high up in the mountains overlooking the Jinshu Plains. The road is perilous as an unusually harsh winter has descended upon the Empire. The snow is thick and the winds bitter cold. In winters past, prisoners would be kept in the dungeons beneath Pinggou until the snows melt in the spring. Something motivates Captain Du Fen to quickly rush these bandits up the mountain. Perhaps the hooded Liwairen prisoner, gaunt and pale, has something to do with it…?

The conscripts under Captain Du Fen’s command in Pinggou are not nearly foolhardy enough to attempt this journey. The good Captain requires brave adventurers with a devil-may-care attitude to brave this expedition.

~----------------------------~

You find yourselves in the outskirts of Pinggou, in one of the many orchards that surround the town. A few inches of snow have settled on the Jinshu Plains. Many of the older folk delight in telling the younger folk that snow has not come to the plains in nearly seventy years! The snow storm is a rare treat that will be remembered for many generations to come. You hold your hand out, the falling snow slowly blotches out your gloved hands, turning them ivory white. Six prisoners are being loaded up into a prison wagon, a two Jinshuren (a male and a female), both guilty of banditry; a female Conkhi, guilty of armed robbery; a female vanara, guilty of arson and attempted murder; a female zisiren, guilty of forgery; and a female Shiren, guilty of kidnapping.

"Get in there, you sodding filth!" screeches the town guard as he forcibly shoves the muscular male jinshuren bandit into the back of the paddy wagon. The prisoner grunts loudly as he slips on the wet floor, falling hard on his shoulder.

One of the other prisoners, the Zisiren female, hisses at the man on the ground, "Watch yourself, scum."

The fallen prisoner manages to right himself and boisterously proclaims, "Or what? You'll creep me out with your forked tongue and evil-tail, wench!?" The man laughs mockingly at the tiefling.

His laughter is cut short however, as the Zisiren leans back, then rockets her foot into the man's face. A thunderous crack can be heard as the prisoner's nose is broken by the woman's bony heel.

Before the fight can escalate a young mutouren guard hops into the wagon and gives both prisoners a good whacking with his billy club. "Now you lot best shut up! Remember, it ain't us guards who will be taking you to prison, no it will be some hired thugs. Thugs who are not beholden to the law. If you muck about like this while they are escorting you, they are libel to just toss you off the side of a cliff, or strip you bare and let you freeze to death in a blizzard...!"

The beaten and battered prisoners look over at the assembled adventurers, then back to the mutouren . Both nod and acquiesce to the guard's demands.

A stately looking Houren with long, dark auburn hair tied back into a tight ponytail walks up the the party. You recognize her as Du Fen, the captain of the guard who hired you. She smiles at each of you in turn, then retrieves her wallet. Sorting through her bank notes, she hands each adventurer two 10 section notes, "Alright. Here's the down payment. Twenty sections, as promised. You will receive a further sixty sections for each living prisoner delivered to the prison camp. If they escape or die, no money for you." She pauses for a moment, looking over at the wagon full of prisoners then sighs, "Hopefully you will get most of them up there. The Warden is desperate for more laborers. The last storm killed seven of his prisoners and two of his guards!"

The young mutouren guard jogs over to the captain, "Ma'am! The prisoners have been loaded into the wagon."

Good," replies the captain. Returning her gaze to the party, "Is there anything else you..."

She is interrupted by a golden-scaled female longyi riding atop a beautiful black-colored horse that saunters up to the party. She is clad in glimmering mithral full plate. On her hip is a longsword and across her back in a shimmering azure-green crysteel halberd. Behind her is a gaunt and pale Liwairen. His hands have been bound with mithral shackles and a silken gag has been tied around his head. The dragonborn retrieves a scroll from her satchel and reads, "By order of Circuit Intendant Hu Zhen, you - Captain Du Fen of the Pinggou Town Guard - are hereby commanded to escort this prisoner - whose name and crimes have been redacted from the official record - to Zhiming Prison Camp post haste."

The Captain looks quite bewildered. After a moment to compose herself, she snatches the scroll from the longyi's hands and reads the scroll five times over just to be sure of what it says. Looking up, Du nods, "Alright. Shove this prisoner in with the others, ma'am."

As the Longyi drags the liwairen over to the paddy wagon, Du returns her gaze to the party she sarcastically states, "Looks like you just earned yourselves a bonus!" After a moment she adds, "Do you require anything else before you leave?"

D&D Equivalent
Hong Longese Currency

1 Copper Piece
1 Cash (a small copper coin with a pentagonal hole in the middle)

1 Silver Piece
10 Cash (usually strung together for ease of transport and counting)

1 Gold Piece
1 Section (100 Cash strung together) or a 1 Section bank note

1 Platinum Piece
1 String (10 Sections strung together) or 1 Tael (a big gold coin) or 10 Section bank note

You recognize the halberd as being made from crysteel, the ancient material used by the Hai Ren. The weapons are made from an organic crystal cultivated and harvested deep under the sea. In an unknown alchemist process, the crystal can be forged into any shape and becomes has hard as steel made by imperial forge masters. Most of the crysteel weaponry, armor and other items were taken by the Empire following the Seventh Hai Ren War. The fact that this Longyi possesses a Hai Ren-made weapon means she is either a very important official within the Empire or she bested a Hai Ren during the war and took his weapon.

Yue is dressed in a heavy coat with a large broad conical hat that obscures her face. Even if these are prisoners they deserve medical care and she was determined to do what she could to help them along. This was going to be a dark point in their lives and they could use a little compassion to help them through it.

She makes a snowball and goes over to offer it to the jinshuren with the broken nose. She says in a soft voice "Here, put this on the injury, it will help reduce the swelling."

Zhang ignores the prisoners for now and focuses on the Captain.

Thank you for your trust, Captain.

(And assuming this hasn’t been taken care of already) We will need horses, supplies and cold weather gear for each of us and blankets and food for the prisoners. If we are getting paid for each one that survives, we can’t have them freezing to death on the mountain.

I assume all of the prisoners have been searched and that they have no weapons or anything that could be a spell focus.

Mia stood aside from the others, looking around at the soldiers and caravaneers. She absently tucked a lock of her red hair behind her ear. She felt lost among the chaos. Libraries and offices were her coice of battlefield. She startled at a familiar voice, "Thank you for your trust, Captain."

Zhang? she thought to herself. What could he possibly be doing here? Shouldn't he be minding after Li? Such an amazing young girl, with so much potential. What could possibly make him leave her behind? She checked her own inventory. Food? Check. Warm clothes? Check. Ugh. What could she possibly have done to displease the gods so much as to ship her off into the middle of nowhere? She worked hard, was loyal, and this was her reward?

"Do you require anything else before you leave?"

YES! she wanted to yell. I REQUIRE JUSTICE! I DON'T DESERVE THIS!!! I SENT THE SUPPLIES! I LIVE WITH HONOR!

But she couldn't bring herself to say the words, so she stood silent. She watched the chaos around her as the group continued their preparations. Zhiming, she thought to herself. I....guess....I can do something with that. Serve with honor.

She watches as Yue places a snowball upon the prisoner's face to help and makes a note in her book about field medicine. Different than that in the hospitals of the empire, where divine healing was performed without a thought. This was going to be service in the hells. She could already tell.

In a quiet voice, she addressed the captain, "I need nothing, captain. Thank you for considering one of my station."

Zhang never expected to see a familiar face today, but is very happy to see his old friend.

Mia!

He runs over and hugs her, before realizing what this must mean for her. The last time he saw her she was being groomed to be a governor. Now she's here? Working as a mercenary.

He sees the sadness in her eyes and the questioning look she gives him. He subtly shakes his head no to indicate she should not ask about Li Na, and assumes he should not ask how she got here in front of the others.

It is so great to see you Mia. Let's catch up...later

He returns to the Captain to finish his request for supplies and information.

Lin was dressed warmly in fine clothes, spotless of filth and a warm collar of wolf fur wrapped around her shoulders. The hanging parchment tassels of her hat drifted in the breeze as she stared up into the sky. Her lightly cyan skin blended with the snow in the air, and she huffed out to see the heavy cloud of vapour. The Hai Ren was tiny compared to her companions - over half a foot shorter than even Mai Shao, and seemed dwarfed by the armoured figures around. With no armour visible, her whip coiled like bracelets around her arm, she seemed less a warrior and more of a young noble lost on a stroll.

Broke from her reverie, she returned the captain's smile, letting it fade into a faint curve of her lips as the captain handed her money and moved on. Emerald eyes watched the high-ranking official as she rode up and delivered another prisoner.

A crysteel halberd. A trophy, unjustly stolen from her people. She didn't let the gentle smile slide off her face, even as the Deepwater Whip shifted and tightened on her arm like a reflex. She returned her focus to the Captain.

"How much is the bonus, Captain Du Fen?" she chimed, her voice soft in the snowfall. "This prisoner is clearly quite unusual."
The Mohiotanga glanced again at the official, the gleaming of the sudden arrival's armour and weapons making it clear that this new prisoner was beyond the norm.

The captain turns to Zhang and Mia, warmly responding, "We will load two barrels of rice onto the wagon, as well as a box of tofu. That should more than suffice for the journey. Blankets have been stored on top of the wagon as well. A coat and a warm blanket has been issued to each of you." She looks off in the distance towards the snow-capped mountains, "Horses will never make it up there, especially not with that snow. We have issued each of you a mule, as well as two more mules to pull the wagon. The mules are to be given to the warden of the camp once you arrive, word has it three of his mules have died due to the cold. All of the prisoners have been inspected."

The captain flashes Lin a sideways glance, "I will give you each twenty sections for a down payment and ten more sections not to tell anyone of this new prisoner. Once he is delivered alive to the camp, you will be given eighty sections. Does that seem reasonable?" Her tone is curt and crisp, lacking the same warmth that her tone possessed when she was speaking with Zhang and Mia.

Meanwhile, the prisoner with the broken nose looks at the snow ball being offered to him. He hesitantly eyes the nearby guard, as if silently asking for permission. The guard rolls his eyes and nods. The prisoner takes the snowball and brings it up next to his smashed nose, "Th-thank you. You are too kind."

The female zisiren sneers, "Only weaklings would accept the aid and comfort from the mercenaries being used to haul us to the hard labor camp. You are weak, bandit. It is no wonder you were caught!"

The male jinshuren bandit - still holding the snowball to his nose - retorts, "You hit me when I was not ready. I will not make that mistake again devil-woman!"

The bandit and the forger stand up and get into one another's face... Then, suddenly, the female conkhi leaps to her feet, grabs the bars of the paddy wagon and starts shaking them violently as she screeches in her monkey language!

"HELP! HELP! I AM INNOCENT! I WAS WRONGLY ACCUSED! ILLEGALLY SENTENCED! I AM NOT WHO THEY SAY I AM! HELP! HELP!

To the tiefling "Where you see weakness, I see wisdom." If only a little bit.

A secret prisoner, this is suspicious.

Yue goes to the captain "Thank you for the supplies, you are most generous."

Mia nods at Zhang, thankful for not being asked to explain her shame in front of everyone. She then ruefully glances towards the mules, wrinkling her brow as she assessed what may be required to ride one of these beasts. She unconsciously takes a step back from the prisoners at the outburst from the female tiefling, then covers herself by taking a few steps toward a mule. Reaching out, she attempts to pet the beast to reassure it she means no harm...

Of course my first roll is a wisdom based ability. :smallwink:

Animal Handling for funsies: [roll0]

Mia jumps back and barely pulls her hand out of the way as the animal snaps at her. She looks around sheepishly at the others. "I never got outside much."

Using the Conkhi’s outburst as a distraction, Zhang helps Mia get accustomed to the mule, showing her how to get on and off and how to control the reins, also using the time to quickly and privately explain Li Na’s enslavement, and listening to Mia’s brief explanation of her story if she shares it.

He then returns to the Captain, who appears to dislike the Hai Ren.

“Did anyone understand the Conkhi?” He starts, more to try to get back into the conversation without obviously interrupting Lin.

“Captain, thank you for the supplies. Could you tell us more about each prisoner? Besides the Liwairin, is there anyone else that might be especially problematic on the journey? Is the protocol for prisoners to be bound for the whole trip?”

Looking around at the falling snow, he adds, “How many days do you think the journey will be in this snow?”

Zhang has proficiency in animal handling, so I assume getting someone on a mule is easy enough to not require a check. I also assume we know the way or have a map. If that’s not true, let us know and we’ll ask that IC too.

"That is satisfactory," Lin purred. The Captain seemed to have an issue with her; the Hai Ren considered whether to push her on it or not, before finally she decided not to. "I am glad to be working with you."

She gave another smile towards the guard officer and turned to speak to her other new companions, like the idiot who couldn't get on a mule.
"Greetings. I am Lin Xieren," she lied smoothly, giving a polite smile. "I hope we can work well together."

Mia frowns as Zhang explains Li's situation and gives him a small portion of her situation as well. She stands quietly until Lin speaks up. She smile warmly and dips her head in a polite greeting. "It is also a pleasure to meet you, Lin Xiren. Hopefully it will be a quick and uneventful journey." As she spoke the final words, a feeling sunk over her. She didn't really have the sensation that there would be anything quick or uneventful about the upcoming trek.

Zhang continues to be polite and formal with the guards and his fellow adventurers. While he could use the money from this job, he knows this type of work will not be enough to rescue his daughter. For that, he will need something more daring. Hopefully these other adventurers will be up for something riskier than transporting prisoners.

He trusts Mia. No matter what she did to end up here, he knows she has a good heart. Better than his own even. There's no way those lost supplies could be her fault. We will need to find a way to prove that though.

Yue might be a little altruistic for his current needs, but having someone who knows the healing arts is always helpful to keep around. She might be willing to help if he told his whole story, but he's not ready to share that with strangers yet. Plus she's here, volunteering to transport prisoners up the mountain in the middle of winter. There must be more to her story.

He tries to size up the Hai Ren. While she clearly appears out of place with no armor and only a whip wrapped around her arm, her confidence in this situation, surrounded by armed guards and violent criminals, suggests she is something more powerful. A powerful outcast might be just the type to have the same goals as Zhang. This could be a valuable friendship.

"Lin. It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Zhang. I am an archer by training. Here due to bad fortune and misunderstandings." He smiles at the next part trying to put the others at ease, "Just like all of you I presume."

Fēn Yě (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2078988) the Resurrected, Priest of Cosmic Balance

Fēn Yě stood to the rear of the group as events unfolded. With his robe pulled tight and his hood low, the priest watched as the prisoners established their pecking order, and the guards used the small adventuring group as a looming threat to engender obedience. He glanced to the Captain as she paid the group, nodding his own thanks for the two notes. At the mention of sixty more per prisoner, Fēn Yě raised an eyebrow as he peered at the six prisoners. 360 sections was fair wages ... perhaps more fair than this job warranted. For now, he was silent.

He gazed at the others, wondering how their path had brought them here. The two mutouren knew each other; and well, if the hug and squeeze were any indication. The hai ren was as arrogant as her caste indicated. The zisiren did not appear to cleave to the norm of her kind, but then again when did they? Liars and cheats will cheat and lie - it is their nature. But perhaps even the soul-stained could find their way back to the Middle Path?

When the longyi arrived, wearing mail and carrying a poleax worth more than any two lives in this camp, Fēn Yě stood a little straighter, listening intently. His eyes actually widened in surprise beneath his hood when he saw the prisoner in tow was another Liwairen, bound in mithral shackles and a silk gag. The priest looked back at the longyi as she read her missive.

The Circuit Intendant? Redacted crimes? This was a political prisoner if ever Fēn Yě had seen one ... and that compounded his concerns about the ease of their assignment one hundred fold. Whatever was going on could easily get every member of this group killed. But surely that was why Capt Du Fen has recruited them in the first place, yes? They were expendable; disposable assistance they could rid themselves of, confident no one would miss them. Unlike their standard guards ...

One of the others mad a request for supplies and asked about the bonus. The Capt offered food, water, blankets and mules for the journey, as well as an additional 110 sections for their discretion and delivery of a single prisoner. Fēn Yě's eyes narrowed in response. Obviously a political prisoner, but why send him to Zhiming Prison Camp? The place certainly had tight security for certain prisoners, but it was notoriously corrupt. The guards and warden already worked a side hustle; what would information regarding this prisoner be worth? Still, the priest remained silent as others voiced their thanks for the supplies, desperately trying to get on Capt Du Fen's good side. Fēn Yě presumed there was no good side or bad side ... simple a path leading to their destiny. The real question is whether their death awaited them ...

A commotion began at the prisoner's wagon, as the two from before begin to spoil for another fight. Suddenly, the vanara leaps up and starts screaming in her native tongue. Fēn Yě shook his head - this was ridiculous! The guards seemed to be unconcerned, clearly treating the situation as someone else's problem. His companions glanced over, then promptly ignored the woman. With no one reacting, Fēn Yě finally stepped forward.

Reaching the wagon swiftly, he gazed at the prisoner's for a moment then spoke softly, his voice loud enough for the prisoners to hear. ”f you please, sit down. We will brook no more fighting, no more outbursts, nor any actions that we deem as disruptive or distracting. The path to Zhiming is long, and the weather makes it more arduous than normal; if you wish to survive the trip intact, I suggest you stay quiet and pay attention."

He looked to the Conkhi. "If you wish to be heard, speak. If you wish to be understood, speak Yun. If you wish to be gagged, scream out again." To the zisiren, he remarked, "You have proven your point - you are all as weak as your friend, since you all appear to be caught. If you wish to be as alive as your friend, I recommend you bottle that aggression." To the man with the broken nose, he nodded to the other Jinshuren. "I do not trust you and her together. I presume you are creating a distraction in order to attempt an escape. That impacts our payment. If we are to lose money, it should be because we chose to - for example, if we are going to lose payment for two missing prisoners, let it be because we executed them for attempting to escape, rather than they ran off to return to their thieving ways."

To the others, he simply nodded, then raised his voice the slightest bit. "To be clear, remember what your former guardian said mere moments ago. We are 'hired thugs,' unbeholden to the law. We could push you down a ravine, or leave you naked in the snow.

Or you can behave and we will see you safely to the Camp. As long as you are alive, you have a chance to chose your path, wherever it may lead you."

With a motion, Fēn Yě crossed his arms and exposed his forearms. On one was a faded brand with an 'F' next to it ... the brand of the Zhiming Prison Camp.

Bai Yong stood to the side of the group, arms wrapped tightly around his lithe frame to keep warm. Barely dressed for the weather, his red orange fur shown through his traveler's clothes and wrappings in patches. The tall vanara looked tired, as if he had just woke, and had a look of passivity and disinterest, almost as if he were one of the prisoners as well waiting to be told what to do.

He shivered a little as the prisoners entered the wagon and the captain gave them their orders. When the sections are being handed out, he lopes over to the others to accept his cut; the smell of alcohol drifts to the group with him.

Don't suppose we can go spend this now before we leave, he suggests, looking to the others before regarding the Captain. She ignores Bai Yong but the conversation is interrupted anyway by the arrival of an imposing longyi and her prisoner in tow. Bai Yong slinks back away, his dealings with the arrogant longyi having never gone well since his coming to the Empire. There is talk about an additional prisoner and some other stuff, the only thing that catches Bai's attention is the total amount of sections they will be receiving. He whistled aloud but wondered to himself if they sold baijiu at the prison camp.

As the Longyi drags the liwairen over to the paddy wagon, Du returns her gaze to the party she sarcastically states, "Looks like you just earned yourselves a bonus!" After a moment she adds, "Do you require anything else before you leave?"

Bai Yong lopes a few steps closer and says, The journey will be cold. Perhaps some baijiu to keep us warm.

Around this time, a commotion occurs at the wagon, and the conkhi woman begins to scream that she was innocent. Bai Yong's headache starts to pound even louder in his head and he does his best to ignore the arguing, I need a drink, he mutters.

Zhang discreetly pours a small amount of his baijiu into his mess kit cup and offers it to Bai Yong.

“Here. To take the edge off.”

He turns to the others gathered around the captain, and speaks to them, but loudly enough that any of the other adventurers can hear if they want, occasionally looking over to them to invite them into the discussions. “In my training I’ve worked with horses quite a bit. If no one else has much experience with them, I can drive the wagon and tend the mules.”

“Fortunately, with this weather, bandits shouldn’t be a problem. No one is crazy enough to transport valuables in this snow. But we probably need someone, maybe two, to ride ahead a little and scout a safe path. Does anyone feel comfortable in that position?”

“I’d like someone to ride next to me and watch the prisoners while I’m focused on the animals. Everyone else should probably ride beside or behind the wagon to keep a better eye on the prisoners.”

Looking over to the wagon, he addresses the Liwairen, “Fen Ye, could you be in charge of prisoner discipline?”

Dr.Samurai
2019-12-29, 10:08 PM
Bai Yong happily accepts the cup and throws the baijiu back in a single pull. Many thanks stranger, he says with almost vacant eyes, handing the cup back, Bai Yong, and I'll happily share a drink with you whenever you want. It'll be cold all the way to Zhiming.

He listens to the mutouren suggest positions. The thought of a quicker pace scouting ahead or sitting on a jostling wagon made Bai's headhache worsen in anticipation.

I can keep an eye on the prisoners from beside the wagon, Bai offers. The bit of biajiu seems to warm him up, but his sleepy eyes make it questionable that he can keep an eye on anyone.

Looking around at the falling snow, he adds, “How many days do you think the journey will be in this snow?”

The good captain groans, "Sadly, I never bothered to learn their monkey tongue." She turns back to Zhang, "Not much I can say about the prisoners. Just the latest batch of criminals too stupid to avoid getting captured. None of their trials were noteworthy. The Conkhi does scream a lot. Perhaps you should buy a gag..." Her tone was dry but she clearly intended her comment as a joke. "I would assume the worst about the whole lot. Do not give them an inch because they will take a country mile." Captain Du then looks up at the mountains and states, "The camp is about forty miles from here. When the mountain pass is clear, my guards can make it to the camp in about three days. With the snow, you are probably looking at double that. Maybe a bit less, since the snows are not so bad in the foothills..."

"That is satisfactory," Lin purred. The Captain seemed to have an issue with her; the Hai Ren considered whether to push her on it or not, before finally she decided not to. "I am glad to be working with you."

In a tone bordering on dismissive, the Captain balks, "I am glad you find it satisfactory."

With a motion, Fēn Yě crossed his arms and exposed his forearms. On one was a faded brand with an 'F' next to it ... the brand of the Zhiming Prison Camp.

Conkhi silences herself as Fēn Yě began speaking. She releases the bars of the wagon and proclaims in a very mockingly regal voice, "I am innocent of the crimes for which the community has accused me. I was falsely convicted and wrongly imprisoned. I am innocent of all crimes. It was, in fact, my twin who committed the crimes. Yes, I know that claim sounds outlandish - bordering on the comical - but trust me when I say - it is the truth. I am but a humble apple merchant. My twin is the black sheep of the family. She does not follow the Path! She has only evil in her heart. May the devils take her and return her as a Liwairen! You cannot, in neutral conscience, take me to prison when I am innocent. Such an act of villainy would lead me astray from the Path and down devils' road...

The other criminals all roll their eyes and mutter something about their own presumed innocence as well... But they all simmer down. They clearly respect the authority of the barking priest... Save for the Liwairen who takes a moment to assess Fēn Yě as he is pushed into the wagon. His eyes are large, shimmering blue orbs the color of a summer's sky. They mournfully stare into Fen's eyes. When the prisoner Liwairen sees the brand, a single tear runs down his cheek. He is younger than you first imagined. Difficult to tell the age of Liwairen as they always look a bit more youthful than an equivalently aged Yuansu. Still, if you were to guess, he would perhaps be only fourteen or fifteen. To be sentenced to hard labor at such a young age... Dreadful.

Zhang (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2077033)

Zhang feels for the prisoners and even thinks that some are probably falsely imprisoned, but believes that delivering them all would be the best way to walk the path. Freeing a guilty prisoner might take him too close to hell. Freeing the innocent, against the will of the courts, might be too good. But maybe he will need some good deeds to make up for what he plans for his daughter’s captor.

The captain appears to have no more useful information. His fellow mercenaries mostly seem competent. Other than Mia, it’s too soon to know if they are trust worthy. No one seems to be organizing this caravan so he decides to do what Mutouren do best, and takes charge.

“The sooner we get started, the sooner we can get there. Let’s pair up to start. 2 scouting, 2 driving, and 2 watching the prisoners. We can rotate every few hours. Bai seems like he needs to ride on the cart to start. Mia, why don’t you watch his back while he drives the cart. Yue, you and I can scout ahead and make sure the route is safe for the cart. Lin and Fen can ride behind and keep an eye on the prisoners. Is this ok with everyone? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Does anyone need anything else before we start?”

I’m fairly new to PbP on here. Is 3 days enough to give people time to weigh in on a plan? If it’s not and you don’t like this plan, I can delete this post and we can try something else.

The party gathers up their supplies, battens down the paddy wagon, hops on their mules and treks off towards the mountains... The party thus departs from the town hidden in the orchards.

The dark black clouds that have been lingering over the Pingguo for days finally burst forth and begin dumping heaps of fluffy snow down upon the land below. The road through the lower reaches of the foot hills is still wide enough to haul two wagons up side by side but, as the day progresses, the road becomes narrower and narrower. After about a half day's worth of travel, the prisoners begin moaning about how cold it is, how hungry they are and how thin the blankets are. The Conkhi grows more and more irritable with each passing hour, grabbing the bars and screeching in her native language. Her cries are drown out by the thunderous winds that rake through the foothills. As the darkness of night approaches, the party crests a hill and comes to a saddle in the mountain range, where the path opens up to a tiny valley that is perhaps a fifth of a mile round. In the distance, they can see several fires - perhaps campfires - spread out across the vale.

What do you guys want to do? It is still snowing, but much less so than earlier in the day. In this area, the snow is a few inches above your ankles.

For context, the little valley is about as large as a WalMart Super Center's Parking Lot.

The elder - with his gaze still locked on Bai - answers in Ruji, <We were forewarned of your arrival by an informant. We knew you would come this way, which is why we made camp here. As for how many of us there are, we are but twelve. Twelve loyal subjects of the lost crowns of Aozora. The others in the valley... We do not know who they are. They all yuansu with bulging muscles. We do not know who they are or why they have come to this valley... Given the weather - and the ease by which we acquired the information about the princess - I fear that they are here to liberate the Princess and slay here now - before she even arrives at the prison camp.>

Between the distance from the cart to the vanara and the fact that the mountain wind is howling, the prisoners have not shown any sign of being able to hear what is going on. They all look a bit restless, ready to sit near a campfire and eat some food than actively plotting anything.

The priest watched silently as two of his companions dealt with the unruly Conkhi. He glanced at her , shaking his head as if to say ‘I told you so.’ He turned to peer down in the valley, brow furrowed for a moment as he counted the fires. He wondered what their two envoys were discussing and why it was taking so long.

Zhang raised similar concerns aloud, suggesting they consider the importance locations of this ‘coincidence. Fēn Yě agreed, commenting softly, ”Agreed - this appears to be more than happenstance. We have a few options. We could return the way we came and find an alternative path to the prison. Or we could head towards the southwestern path, but we would need to travel quickly to avoid being stopped.

The question that haunts me is why they are here. Do they seek one of our prisoners? And if so, who would it be? The Liwairen seems the most likely, but it could be the Vanara or one of the Yuansu. But if we presume they seek a prisoner, how do we plan on protecting them?“

Glancing back to the prisoners, he pondered for a moment, then remarked, ”While Inauggest we take the path of least resistance, we should restrain the prisoners, least they intuit our intentions and attempt to derail our attempts.”

Zhang (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2077033)

Zhang is getting worried about the groups ahead. It is too cold for them to just be out for no reason. Maybe we were hired not because they didn't have men to spare for this job, but because we are expendable. The Captain must have known these bandits would be here, and maybe he was even in on it. It would be a good cover for getting rid of, or rescuing, a prisoner if the whole caravan were to be killed. Every plan Zhang can think of to get through this valley could be ruined by an outburst from one of the prisoners.

He agrees with Fen, "Fen you are right, the prisoners need bound, blindfolded, and gagged. We can't have anyone calling out to their friends."

He draws an arrow and points it at the prisoners. "I don't want to kill any of you today, but I will. Each of your lives are worth 10 sections to me. If you ever become more trouble than 10 sections is worth, I will not hesitate. All of you line up along the back wall of the wagon. Conkhi, you are first. Come over to the near wall, put your hands behind your back and let my friend here tie them."

When Fen has finished tying up the Conkhi, the rest are called over individually. Zhang keeps ready to shoot any who disobey or call out.

He understands why Mia is surprised. This is something he never would have done before. But he doesn't feel guilty about it. If he shows the prisoners that he is willing to carry out the threat, then hopefully it won't be needed. If it is needed, though, he will follow through with no hesitation. No matter what, he must survive if he is ever going to rescue his daughter.

"Mia, I understand your hesitation. But this is for their safety as much as ours. We don't know who is out there. We don't know if one of these prisoners has enemies or allies in these camps. If it is enemies, we must sneak past them without anyone here making noise. If one of them have allies in this valley, they might try to save themselves and put the rest of us at risk, guards and prisoners alike. I don't want to shoot any of them. But if they won't listen to us, I'll have no choice. We are charged with their safety, but also with their delivery, and I'm trying to ensure both."

Zhang continues to keep his bow pointed at the prisoners, not yet drawing back. He sympathizes with Mia. How did they both sink this low? Guarding prisoners as mercenaries? About to be killed by the Vanara or Yuansu? She has maybe never held a weapon at someone's throat or fought another person in real combat. Zhang will try to be delicate but this situation could turn dire at any moment. He speaks, loud enough for the prisoners and the others to hear, but not so loud that it carries across to the Vanara.

"Mia, we need to be practical. We need to walk the middle path. If we kill these prisoners for no reason, we would be on the path to hell. If we show mercy to the point of getting ourselves killed, that would put us on the path to heaven. I am trying to walk the middle path. As long as the prisoners obey our orders, no one will get hurt. If anyone disobeys and we have to kill them, that is their fault. Fen, Mia and Lin, would you rather tie the prisoners or be prepared to kill them if they act out?"

"We will never be able to sneak past all three groups. We will have to use diplomacy and deceit to distract them. Perhaps we can get them fighting amongst each other. We just need to find out what each of them wants. Bai and Yue are scouting out the Vanara. One or two of us should make contact with one of the Yuansu groups. I could go to the group guarding the shortest path and see what they are waiting for. I will tell them that we encountered the Vanara and had to turn around for our safety. The elder leads a group of Vanara loyal to the princess. They simply want her handed over, and do not wish any conflict with us. But there are also two groups of yuansu in the valley, and it looks like they're blocking the paths forward. No one would be out here to weather this storm without reason. And if the vanara knew we were coming, they probably did too. The elder thinks they may be here for the princess as well, but we don't know. But uh, conflict between the two groups is not uncommon. Bai looks around uncomfortably, Yue is looking for an herb that can put the princess to sleep. Make it look like she's... died.

Then we can hand her over. Bai looks to the others to gauge their reactions.

The officials of the empires are the only brigands I know. This is a job, not a test for our souls. I believe the Elder, they do not seem untrustworthy or violent. But I don't think we will survive the day if we just roll through the valley in peace. We need to find out the Yuansu's intentions and somehow get them to leave their current camps.

The fact that we are outnumbered by the Vanara is precisely why I suggested we kill the princess if they attack us. I want you to tell them that we will keep the princess safe. If they get us through the valley, they can have her. If they try to attack us though, we will kill her. It is simply a deterrent. Sometimes the believable threat of force can prevent bloodshed. Zhang Mia scurry off down the rocky path and make their way towards the Yuansu. Once the two adventurers get about halfway into the vale, three headband-wearing yuansu hustle over to greet them. Their leader is a female Shiren. She has long black hair with light blue streaks, which has been tied back into a tight ponytail. She is wearing a dark blue and light gray Kasaya. "Greetings travelers. My name is Tian Bo. We are warrior monks from the Temple of the Crashing Waterfall." She bows deeply then continues, "Our order was tipped off that you would be escorting several prisoners to the prison camp near Yule. We know that the Navy has secretly asked that you transport an undocumented Liwairen prisoner to the camp. That prisoner is named Sun Li. This boy is very important to the future of our order. Zhang rides next to Mia into the valley. When they are stopped by the three Yuansu, Mia speaks first. When she is finished, he has a couple more questions for the three.

"Yes, why is a single boy so important to you? How did you find out about our journey? Do you know who is in the other camp of Yuansu over there?" He points to the bandana camp of Yuansu. He then continues,

"The Vanara are trying to get a prisoner from us, the other Yuansu I presume will want another. At this rate we will end up in Yule with an empty wagon. We are being paid an extra 50 sections each just to deliver the Liwairin boy. More than all of the other prisoners combined. It is a lot to ask of us to give up our bounty and our honor, since we gave our word that we would transport him safely to Yule."

The elder vanara nods in agreement and responds in the language of his people, <Very well. We shall aid you to get past the yuansu. However, I do not trust your companions... Or their intentions.>

<I understand Elder. I do not know them well, we only just came together today for this job. But I believe they know the Yuansu are the greater threat and will work with you and your group to get through the valley safely.>

He pauses for a moment and leans in, <Our people are broken and dying. We must rekindle the spark of our civilization...>

Bai purses his lips and nods solemnly. Back home, before the Kage, he had been respected, even admired. He had friends and family. Here, in the Empire, he was a lousy drunk, scraping herbs together for his next drink. If the Elder and the Princess could start a new home for the Vanara somewhere, that would be something wonderful. Bai goes to say something but the old man palms Bai's shoulder and smiles in a warm, grandfatherly manner, <When the time comes... I know you will make the correct choice.>

Bai seems stunned. The Elder goes to rouse the group, leaving Bai standing in the wind, The correct choice? he thinks to himself, Does he mean leave with them once we've handed the Princess over?

Thinking of what it would mean to join the Vanara after the job is done, and to have a home and a family again, Bai stands watch over Yue as she prepares the herbs, We should hurry back and let the others know the Vanara are willing to help us for the Princess.

Addressing Mai, Tian Bo states, "I understand your dilemma. Duty to one's task is something our order holds in high regard. We thank you for taking the time to discuss this issue with us."

Our order's ancient scriptures - written long before the Emperor Hongse Lao graced these lands with his benevolence - state that a child of light and dark would be born in the depths of a season of dusk exactly 5,399 years from the night of the seer Haiyang Xianzhi betrothal to Fu Wang, King of Foutun Dun (the castle-city state that would one day become Gangtie Feng). This young man was born on the exact mid-point of the previous cycle of Slumbering Moon, which would be 5,399 years after the betrothal. It is said this child of light and dark would become the master of all forms of martial arts known to the yuansu and would - with his great prowess - be the key to defeating an warlord from paradise that threatens all yuansu. We believe this child - Sun Li - is the person that prophesied by the seer Haiyang Xianzhi all those millennia ago.

Turning to Zhang the woman continues, "We learned of your secret venture by way of a bureaucrat who... Has loose lips when intoxicated."

We do not know who the other yuansu are. They arrived after we did. They wear bandannas that cover their faces. They drink heavily and often fist fight with one another. Two of them threatened our camp, attempting to scare us off. We incapacitated the two bullies with our order's secret technique. Since then, the bandanna wearing yuansu have kept to that side of the valley.

Zhang then mentions the payment that will be doled out to the party upon their arrival at the prison camp. "Interesting.," says Tian Bo in a contemplative manner, "That is a cunning payment structure, clearly designed after much trial and error. Our order is not incredibly wealthy as we believe in asceticism. Still, our order has been gifted with many items over the centuries. If monatry wealth is your aim, then we offer a trade. The Liwairen prisoner for..."

The woman wiggles a simple-looking iron band off of her finger, "This. It is a magical ring. With a command, the ring will glow with as much light as a torch. Additionally, it is said that the ring will vibrate when in the presence of angels, although I have never had the chance to verify the veracity that stated ability."

Zhang shifts uncomfortably in his seat. He looks at the monks while the woman speaks. He looks back at the Vanara and over to the other Yuansu.

He believes the young monk. But he also believes the Vanara, and is not happy to have to give away another of the prisoners. And with the other group of Yuansu, even giving away the Vanara and this Liwairin does not guarantee safe passage through this valley.

He pauses and looks at Mia for her input, before starting to reply, hoping she will chime in next. He opens with his question before trying to soften the discussion.

“Do you still have custody of the Yuansu that you incapacitated? I would like to talk to them to find out what threat they are to us.

It is very nice to meet you, Tian Bo, and that is a compelling story. I would hate to be responsible for the downfall of all of the Yuansu,” He laughs at his joke. “And a magical ring is intriguing. But how would we split a single magic ring between all of the guards when the journey is over? It may not be enough to convince my co-workers.

And more importantly, we have a duty to uphold our honor. I am not saying no to your offer, but my friend and I here do not have the authority to make any deal. We must talk to the others, first. If there is any other assistance your order could give us, it might help convince my compatriots.”

Here is the summary of Zhang and Mia's encounter with the monks and return with the two prisoners. While we were shut down here.

1/29/2020

11:01 AM Felhammer: The woman nods, "We still have possession of the two yuansu bullies. If you wish to ask them questions, we shall release them to your custody." One of Tian's aides heads back to their camp and brings the two unconcious men atop a donkey over to Zhang and Mia. "How you divide the value of the ring is a quandary I leave in your capable hands."

11:02 AM Zhang: "Can we wake one of them up?"

11:13 AM Felhammer: "You may take them back to your camp if you so choose," replies the monk

11:38 AM Zhang: "How long before they wake up?"

11:43 AM Felhammer: "Splash some water on them and they should wake up," jovially retorts Ms. Tian.

12:05 PM Zhang: "Thank you. We will take your offer and these two back to the others. I will return here in one hour with a respone." Mia and I each ride with one prisoner. I keep one hand on my horse, and use the other to first wake my prisoner then hold a knife to him. "Who are you with?" "Who are you waiting for?" I ask once he's awake.

2:30 PM Felhammer: The man groggily rouses from unconsciousness. He looks around and clearly has trouble discerning where he is and what is going on. He feels the blade near his throat and suddenly realizes the predicament he is in. The man spits out, "Don't kill me! Don't kill me! I didn't do anything... Too wrong... I am Jin from Jinshu. I... Am with some friends... Some peasants who are sick and tired of being taxed to death by the corrupt bureaucrats who run this province!!!" After a moment to collect himself he adds, "We are looking to bust our friends out. Two of them. Caught and tried for banditry! They aren't bandits! The bureaucrats are oppressing us!"

2:53 PM Zhang: "Thank you for the confession Jin from Jinshu." He looks to make sure Mia heard what the man said.

Zhang and Mia return to the others, each with a prisoner on their horse. Zhang drags the new prisoners to the prison wagon and ties them up outside the wagon. He first addresses his fellow guards.

“Mia and I talked to the Yuansu. The first group are monks. The Liwairin boy is a chosen one who they believe will defeat a great evil and prevent the deaths of millions. In exchange for his release, they have offered us a magic ring that lights a room on command and detects the presence of angels. The monks approached us peacefully and did not threaten violence. They did not say, but I suspect, that they will not let us pass through this valley with the boy.

I’m willing to make that trade if one of you wants the ring. They can offer no more reward but I think they might be willing to help us rid ourselves of these bandits. Perhaps, if we capture some of the bandits and bring more prisoners to Yule than we started with, the Warden will overlook a missing Vanara and Liwairin."

Zhang turns to the two new prisoners, still addressing his friends, “These two belong to a second group of Yuansu, tried to attack the monks, and were captured. The monks gave them to us to interrogate. On the way here, this one claimed that they were here to ‘bust their friends out.’ Friends who were convicted of banditry. They say they are ‘sick and tired of being taxed to death by the corrupt bureaucrats who run this province.’ That sounds like bandits to me.”

Finally, he talks directly to the two men, talking loud enough so all of the PCs and prisoners can hear. “You deserve a trial, so we will hold one now. By the authority given to us by Captain Du Fen of Pinggou, all of the guards have a vote on your guilt or innocence.”

What Zhang just said is likely not true. We probably have no authority to arrest or sentence. But everyone here knows that the Warden needs prisoners and will probably agree to it.

“The monks accuse you of an unprovoked attack on their camp. I was there when the monks made this accusation. They seemed honest. In addition, you just admitted to us that your plans are to attack our caravan and free your friends, even if it means killing us, innocent guards.”

He looks to his friends, “Everyone here can vote on their innocence or guilt. If at least three of us find them guilty, they will be sentenced to 5 years of labor at Zhiming camp in Yule. I vote guilty.”

He holds out his hand, makes a fist, and turns his thumb down, looking around for the others’ votes…

Revolt if you want. I'm just trying to find a way through this mess that would be acceptable to our characters. Especially you Fishybug. If Mia wouldn't like this plan, here is your chance to tell Zhang to stop.

Fēn Yě watched silently as Zhang and Mia returned with ‘prisoners.’ He listened to the man’s pitch, then blinked as it rolled immediately into a ‘trial.’ He finally pushed away from the tree he was leaning on and spoke. ”Hold a moment. This is all very interesting, but can we pause for a moment and discuss this aside?”

Stepping to a safe distance away from the new and old prisoners, the priest whispered, “What are you doing? You seem to be forcing a decision based on your assessments, without the benefit of anyone else having a voice. I am certainly not going to have the discussion in front of men you are attempting to mislead.

You mentioned the boy is a chosen one? What proof is there of that? Is there any more proof of him being chosen than the Vanara being a princess? You mentioned the monks were peaceful, but you are certain they will oppose us - why? What about their demeanor suggests violence to say their chosen one?

Funny thing about prophecies - people use them as necessary to convince themselves their actions have merit, and make order out of potentially random events. Who is to say that the boy’s path will be the same if he doesn’t serve time in prison? Where is it written he must be saved from the Camp in order to be the man who will fight this great evil?

And has it already been decided to give the so-called princess over to the Vanara?”

He paused for the others to respond.

Yue brews some tea over the Vanara campfire and walks back to the rest of the party in time to hear Zhang's report.

"Sending people to prison for hypothetical plans is wrong."

After hearing Fēn Yě mention giving the princess over to the Vanara, Yue wonders what exactly Bai Yong said to the rest of the group as he apparently told them much more then she would have liked.

"I know not what Master Bai has told you. As far as I know we only agreed that if the Vanaran were to die in battle as we attempt to cross this valley we would leave her body with them as we will not get paid for delivering a corpse."

Zhang (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2077033)

Zhang speaks to Fen and Yue, walking away so the prisoners don't hear this conversation. Pausing to see if the other party members want to come over too.

"I'm sorry Fen. It seemed clear to me that these men were guilty and so I thought a trial would be faster than a debate. We can step back if you want.

I don't think the boy is the chosen one. The monks think the boy is the chosen one. I don't care if he is or not. But I think if we try to keep him we will be attacked.

These men I brought back are guilty. But the monks and the Vanara would be guilty too if we gave them a chance. The only reason to wait in the cold for a prisoner caravan is if you plan to take the prisoners by force. I think everyone in this valley besides us should be arrested and tried. But we don't have the manpower to do that.

Since all of the people in this valley want at least one prisoner from us, we can't go through the valley and keep all of our prisoners. They will attack us. Since they all know we are here, if we try to take the long way to the prison they will hunt us down.

So I think our only option is to give up some of the prisoners and convince some of these people in the valley to help us against the others. The monks and Vanara offered to help us get past the bandits so I say we take them up on it.

Taking some of the bandits prisoner will lessen the financial loss on us when we arrive at the prison. I'm sure the warden will be happy with whoever we bring. If you both prefer, we can skip the trial here and just arrest them, leaving their fate to the warden. I doubt our trial would hold up legally anyway."

Fēn Yě (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2078988) the Resurrected, Priest of Cosmic Balance

Fēn Yě rubbed temples for a moment. This was the challenge of walking the Path - competing forces constantly pushed this way and that, trying to shift one from the Path ... where only darkness and chaos reigned. He looked to the valley where several groups awaited their caravan, some presumable to do violence. Tales of princesses ... false imprisonment ... chosen ones ... how was a simple man supposed to navigate himself through the forest of such choices? Should he do anything? Stop all of it? Would his choices determine whether he lived or died in this valley? Right or wrong were important, but less so than maintain Lujing. He closed his eyes and pondered for a long moment before inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly.

Opening his eyes, Fēn Yě turned towards the others. ”Lujing does not mean inaction - it is finding one's path in light of many choices. If we are to Balance the Scales, then perhaps we have been given a way. We could free the 'Princess' and the 'Chosen One' in exchange for two prisoners, thus keeping the balance of our charge. Next we gain the aid of two groups to help fend off the predations of the others, finding a path between opposing forces.

Would this be acceptable, or do we wish to leave the valley and find another route?”
Normally, I'd be all for continued discussion and exposition, but in lieu of getting the game going and being a team player, this is the best conciliation I could come up with for my character.

Zhang thinks for a moment and decides that Fen's plan sounds like it might work. He isn't really concerned with the prisoner count. He just needs to get through this valley and stay alive if he is to have any chance of rescuing his daughter.

"That is a good plan Fen. Yue, can you present this to the Vanara? I'll see if the monks are willing to help. Fen, could you guard the prisoners. We'll help you get them all in the cage."

Zhang politely addresses the monks in full Mutouren bureaucratic mode.

"The bandits you gave me admitted that they planned to attack us as we traveled through the valley. You made no such threats, and we appreciate that restraint," he says, knowing that the monks likely would have attacked us if we were not making this deal, but he does not bring that up or even imply it. "We ask for your help defeating the bandits so that we may have safe passage through the valley. We are making the same offer to the Vasara who we think will also help. In exchange, we will release the Chosen One to you. We will take 2 of the bandits prisoner to replace the ones we release to you and to the Vasara. If any of the other bandits survive the fight, we ask that you keep them in custody for at least 10 days. After that, you can release them or continue to hold them at your pleasure."

"If this is acceptable, please have a representative accompany me back to our group so we can coordinate a strategy to defeat the bandits."

Yue does not like the plan, even if it is the only way to safely pass through. Once they reach the prison all it could take is one loose tongue and they could all be thrown in jail for releasing some of the prisoners, even if they arrive with a few extra.

While it might not be what she originally intended it for, the tea could be used in a different way.

While Zhang is talking to the monks she goes and gives each prisoner a cup of her sleepy time tea. Better if they are not witnesses to what is coming.

With everyone gathered together, the party and their new allies concoct a battle-plan to defeat the bandanna-wearing enemies. The vanara bring up the idea that they have slings and can attack from range, while the monks state that they have the ability to incapacitate enemies with a single hit.

If your plan is to attack those laying in wait ahead, you will need my help, unless your plan is to suffer many injuries while thugs with swords and clubs charge a bunch of bow-users and mages." Yan is wearing heavy clothing to compensate for the temperature, and it hides exactly how much his fur is bristling in agitation that the monks hadn't thought to bring him into this scheme sooner. Ah, the magic words. Full share. A grin makes itself visible upon the Petjar's face. He didn't care if a full share was just a string of poor coins at this point. Getting paid was getting paid, the rest could be sorted later. "I agree to your terms. And I think taking the fight to them can be the right move. Navigating a mountain pass in a snowstorm like this is too dangerous to risk taking side-paths and leaving the roads. What I'm saying is you need to know how to pick a fight you can also win. Can't spend coin if you don't survive to collect payment. And by the looks of you and your 'friends', there's not much military experience among you, these monks, or the Vanara group. That's where I can help you best. You know they are waiting for you, so the question is whether you want to provoke them with an ambush of your own, or whether you want to charge the flanks and catch them where the defense is weakest."

He turns to Fen, Mia and Yue. "Someone also needs to guard the prisoners. Perhaps one of you could do that with help from a few of the Vanara and monks. Which group would each of you like to go with?"

Fēn Yě listened to the monk, shaking his head. The Path illuminated itself in odd ways - the other monk was quiet and introspective; this one was aggressive and outspoken. Time would tell if that’s what the group needed. After a moment, he responded to the petjar. ”I agree a frontal assault is dangerous and potentially mission ending. However, we also do not need to presume a fight, nor ‘march to war’ as it were. The camps all lay below, and now two should be our allies. Our greatest strength lies in numbers the others are unaware of as of yet. I would presume any violence would not occur until they see our wagon. That means hiding the wagon and/or the prisoners may be our best plan.

Presuming we cannot, if we make it difficult to get to the wagon, we may achieve some success. For example, what if we took the wagon through the valley , but when around the sides we have allies, forcing any belligerents to come through our new allies, people our enemies may not realize are allies until it’s too late.

And do not discard diplomacy as an option before embracing battle.”

The Petjar can't help but smirk at the priest's interjection. "I can count on one paw the number of times people laying in wait just want to talk things over. If they are open to negotiations, I'm sure it'll be of the 'the prisoners or your lives' variety. Having armed escorts by the cart is a good idea though." Fēn Yě answered calmly. ”Interestingly enough, all three groups were 'laying in wait' as it were ... and we have managed to reach an accord with two of them. Perhaps diplomacy will be at the end of a sword; I simply suggest we leave the option open that a dialogue may be warranted.

As we prepare for war to ensure peace, let our initial entry into the valley seem peaceful, oblivious even. As Zhang suggests, the monks can advance, seemingly as if to cause violence, but in reality to protect us. If the Vanara quit the field earlier, all the better to sell the scene.

As for the prisoners, they are simply that - men and women sentenced to the Zhiming Prison Camp. We are simply the escort, and the weather is ... unfortunate. Unless it works in our favor ...”
I'm good with Zhang's plan ... anything my character is suggesting is nuance. Fēn Yě will try to keep an eye on opposing groups, looking for the leaders. If things get a bit volatile, he will use calm emotions, as necessary, to dampen the fervor.
