So trying to get a new balanced class that serves a different fighting feeling "with options", without replicating the feel of the true martial classes.

Yes, the Runemaster is a good melee combattant, but it's through the power of his runes, not his physical shape in most way. Kind of a less martial Paladin.

I was thinking the HD similar to a Bard, INT-Con as proficiency saving throws.

Spell development following the Warlock. The Runemaster's spell list is closer to the cleric in term of what's castable, with a martial focus. Stuff like Shield of Faith, Spiritual Weapon. Or maybe Divine Fervour and certain paladin spells.

I was thinking a level 2 or 3 feature is the ability to cast a Cantrip whole attacking. The cantrip is melee range, and triggers automatically with the (never increasable) 1 melee attack.

Saving throws are necessary if needed. It's just that the attack and the cantrip trigger simultaneously. So a Runemaster could basically bash a hit every round, booster or trigger at the same time as Shocking Grasp, Fire Bolt, or maybe Divine Flames.

It turns all combat cantrips as Martial Cantrips. Basically making the standard combat cantrips somewhat less effective.
