I was just wondering, are there any good online tools for creating maps to post for a PbP game that anyone could recommend?

I use inkarnate.com for world maps. Even the free version is really good and allows the creation of great-looking maps.

But if you mean designing dungeon schematics... Then I just do it on Roll20 itself.

You also might try the Maps & Floorplans (https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=31&sid=b353ed60f7f5bb9badf17c181723c409) thread at Dragonsfoot.

roll20 (https://roll20.net/) might be good. everyone would need an account in order to veiw the map / move their tokens, but otherwise it's pretty good.

For world map, I use Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator combined with Paint.NET
https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/

For dungeon map, there is an over-abundance of online tools.
It is however best to do it by hand... but if you need something fast :

Myth Weaver also has something similar but the link doesn't work for me right now.

Depends on what you want to get out of the map:

- Google Sheets: I have seen DM's use this to create very basic maps for combat maps mostly but also world maps. It would be very basic in looks but it is a free resource.

- Gimp: Essentially the freeware Photoshop. You can find several tutorials on how to make world maps, combat maps, or whatever you need. Several places are abound where you can upload and link the finished map.

- Donjon RPG tools: A website that has a wide variety of tools for all of the D&D editions. Though free, the map generators are random and simple with very little customization.

- Inkarnate: A friend of mine uses this but from what I gather it is an imagining host site and map creator. Does require a subscription but the basic one is free.

- davesmapper: Another free site to make maps but allows you to export them to a png format.

- Dungeon Painter: Limited set for map designs but does have good details.

Wonderdraft is my favorite map making tool. It's not online, but it's easy to purchase and download.

I upload Excel screenshots of battle maps. Simple, easy to edit. I've also used Paint to make some ugly but functional city maps.

MapTools, and then screenshot the map and post the jpegs somewhere like imgbox. It's not the most intuitive program in the world, but it works.
