I will admit to sometimes skimming spells, and I did not realize 5e mage hand was visable. So I was a little confused when that became one of the defining traits of the psionic subclasses.
That being said how powerful is this effect? It feels to me that this is more of a flavor thing, but I have been wrong before.
Also, is it reasonable that this is a part of psionics theme/powerset? Does it fit in effectively?

This is nothing new, Arcane Tricksters can make their mage hand invisible too.

'Powerful' is probably not the word i would use to describe an invisible mage hand. Its useful, and its meant to create the minor telekinetic feel. Telekinesis is one of the major psionic tropes, along with telepathy and mind reading. So yes, i'd say its thematic.

It enables you to use it in ways that you couldn't use a visible mage hand. Though to get the most out of that, you also need the Arcane Trickster's ability to use Sleight of Hand through it.
