In our last session, our party of level 10 fought against an enemy party of NPC characters that were level 10. Our dm is doing the "achievement" way of leveling, where whenever we succeed in a difficult task, he gives us a level. The last two levels have been gained by, 1. Sweeping an encounter meant for a party of 4 level 10 characters, and 2. Having a single member of our party take down a fully grown adult white dragon in one turn (with our support).
Our 7th level was earned by the half of the party that survived an encounter with a rival party (all npcs created by dm) they were level 10ish, and they all had at least 10 character levels (no npc classes). They consisted of a barbarian/cleric that used all of his spell slots to boost his damage during his rage (dealing upwards of 40 damage per hit). A rogue/fighter that threw GARGANTUAN greatswords, and used a slight of hand check to allow him to apply sneak attack to it, dealing an average of 50-60 damage per sword (thew 3 each round). And a factotum that was armed with an extremely powerful relic that allowed him to control one of our party members. There were five of us, the three living characters gained a level from SURVIVING an encounter with them, they were a highly optimized party, each armed to the teeth with magic items. We were a party that was optimized for out of combat, role playing situations (running a business, talking to people, making items, etc).
We, at level 10, just faced off against them, and mopped the floor with them because we set up an ambush, and caught them off guard. Should we gain a level, because even though we wiped them out, two members of our now three member party (two players had to leave due to irl problems) were dropped below zero (thank god for temporary hit points granted to us preemptively). If you calculate the xp gained, it's not enough, but I wanted to explain the significance of this encounter. We gained a level recently from killing the dragon, but this was a closer fight.
