One of these days, my group is planning on returning to our old Freeport campaign, and a few times now I've looked into the possibility of getting my character a young Wyvern companion through the Leadership feat via the "Young Dragon" listed on the Leadership feat page (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/leadership/)

As far as i can tell, my leadership score as of getting the feat would be a 12.

7(level), +2(Charisma), +2(Great Renown, Hero of Freeport), +1(Special power, character trait). Meaning my cohort level could be as high as 8th as of getting the leadership feat, but i could only keep one that was level 5 or lower i believe.

The problem comes when it gets to the "Magical Beast Corhorts" section of the Leadership page. for the life of me i can't find out where i'm supposed to get my effective druid level from. is it 1:1 with my current level? my leadership score? something else?

a young dragon's effective cohort level is CR + 8. Wyvern's CR is 6, young template (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/simple-template-young-cr-1/) reduces that to 5, so that would be effective cohort level 13...

13 isn't even on the table. Would i need an effective druid level of 21 to get this? or...?

I'm sure this is doable somehow, just not sure if my character could ever realistically achieve it. If it requires them to get +4 charisma then it's possible, if if it requires them to get to level 21... probably less so.

Afraid i don't quite understand the leadership feat here. Any thoughts or advice? or is this an unlikely pipe dream?

Instead of a feat, the Draconic Ally spell might help?

don't think that'll work. my character is a Rogue, with some possible future levels in the Divine Agent (http://www.pathfindercommunity.net/classes/multiclass-archetypes/cleric/divine-agent-cleric-rogue) class if the DM allows for it. Draconic ally isn't a cleric spell from the looks of things.

"Clerics, inquisitors, oracles, and warpriests who worship Apsu or Dahak add draconic ally to their spell lists as a 3rd-level spell."

So, maybe?

You don't gain an EDL via Leadership, but if you already have an EDL, you can get the Monstrous Companion (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/monstrous-companion/) feat instead of Leadership, and Monstrous Companion uses your EDL to determine which kind of creature you can gain as a monstrous companion (from the Leadership page you linked to):

"Many classes grant characters access to animal companions. When they reach 7th level such characters can also acquire a cohort through the Leadership feat. This may lead to a single character having both an animal companion and a cohort, which can significantly slow down gameplay and cause the character to be less important than the allies at her side. The Monstrous Companion feat allows a character to combine a monster cohort and an animal companion, gaining benefits over either without having to keep track of both.

Special: The feat Monstrous Companion counts as the Leadership feat for the purposes of prerequisites. A character cannot have both Leadership and Monstrous Companion."

HTH!

okay, well that could have been made more clear by holding those on separate pages:smallannoyed:

so a random fighter can't get say, a dog as a cohort then?

so a random fighter can't get say, a dog as a cohort then?Well, they "sorta kinda" can via Animal Ally (and Boon Companion). But really, if your game already allows Leadership, it wouldn't increase the risk of balance issues if you also house ruled that anyone can get monstrous cohorts instead of normal cohorts (monstrous ones are generally far less powerful).

dang. was hoping there'd be an actual RAW way of getting this done. guess i'll have to wait until that eventual campaign gets picked up again to ask the DM. Ahwell.
