Is there a name for the trope where in anime one guy sits on the sidelines and explains what the hero just did, often with some closeup of their shocked expression? I swear I see it enough that it should be a named trope.

Yeah. It's called Exposition. It's not a trope, it's just a part of storytelling.

Exposition may not be a trope, but Mr Exposition (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MrExposition) is.

Considering this trope is used at least as far back as Dragon Ball/Yu Yu Hakusho, I'm going to go with anime. :smalltongue:

Since a trope is basically "a thing that exists in storytelling", with examples including "conflict" and "protagonist", exposition is definitely a trope.

Sure, the proper tvtropes name is probably "our exposition is more explainey" or something, but it's still a trope.
