So, just a random challenge/thought experiment.

How would you replicate the Artificer base class, without using Artificer or any other Eberron material?

I'm leaving this deliberately open ended.

Any incarnum class (Though I guess incarnate is the best suited) with the ironsoul forgemaster prc?

you get crafting and soulmelds, which are essentialy "changeable spiritual magic items", many of them actually described as items of some sort, so that would fit the bill pretty accurately, since you could just describe these melds as infusing magical essence into normal objects which is the whole artificer shtick

EDIT - even though you still need to meet spell preqs which might be problematic...
for a more castery version, that requires more prepeartaion, I think that the rune caster prc is also a really good choice since you just imbue items with spells, no workarounds or getting in the backdoor, including the ability to create permanent magic items, one shot magic items that can be refluffed as potions, charge based items, and X/day items

Midgard Dwarves from Frostburn can craft any magic Weapon, armor, wondrous item and ring in the game.

Master Arcane Artisan (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ei/20030314a) is an epic prc that grants you an xp pool for item creation, and the ability to cannibalize magic items to add xp to said pool.

PF lets just about anyone make items IIRC.

Does being a wizard and just making a Sim of an artificer count? :smalltongue:

Also, Wish -> Create Magic Item ftw.

A wizard with a lot of crafting feats built to use some flavour of craft based resource (wands, constructs, etc) in fights is a good fit.

You could make a crummy version with Truenamer and Gnomish Artificer. Truenamer's Lexicon of the Crafted Tool are utterances that affect items, so sort of like infusions in that regard. Gnomish Artificer makes fake magic items held together with duct tape, but they produce spell effects so can emulate real Artificer's skill at crafting.
