I played Phantasy Star II-IV when younger, then the original later in life. Never did Online or Universe.
In fact, Phantasy Star IV was the first real RPG I played. Like, beat it myself, all the way through. Definitely got the nostalgia goggles. However, even replaying it from time to time, I think it holds up (unlike some other games I enjoyed in my youth).
There's a site for PS fans out there, Phantasy Star Cave (https://www.pscave.com/). Lots stuff, info on the games (maps, enemies, etc.), official art, fan art, fan games.
Now I've played quite a few fan games over the years. Not of Phantasy Star in particular, just fan games. A couple weeks ago I saw something on FaceBook (PS Cave has a FaceBook page too), a couple images for a game called Phantasy Star IV: 20 Years Past (basically). Screenshots looked good so I downloaded it (as well as a couple others).
Hooooooooooooooooooly smokes, 20 Years Past is far and away the best fan game for any series I've ever played. It does have its demerits (no macro, no combo attacks, unpolished English translation), but regardless, amazing. If you have an extra few hours (playthrough took me a good few hours), I heartily recommend it.
It ends on a cliffhanger. But the game only came out 2 years ago, so I *hope* there's a sequel in the works. I reached out to the creator, will report back.
