So I've finally got access to the Player's Handbook, and I can check everything that's left out of the SRD. Like starting gold: a 1st level cleric gets 5d4X10 gold, or an average of 125, or a maximum of 200. All his equipment comes from that pool of gold. But what if I'm starting a game with a third level cleric? If he's being created from scratch at third level, what's the standard amount of gold to buy his equipment from? I have the feeling I'm missing something basic here.

That's, unfortunately enough, listen in the DMG

Specifically, page 135, table 5-1, "Character Wealth by Level". Since creating characters above first level is at the DM's discretion (whereas creating a 1st-level character is treated as the default), that's where the rules for it end up.

You use the wealth by level (WBL) guidelines in the DMG. Off the top of my head, I think they are on page 137, but I really don't know why I would know that page off the top of my head.:smalltongue:

Edit: DOUBLE NINJA'D! And my page number was apparently off. :smallfrown: *goes and eats a cookie to cheer himself up*

You will find that information in the DMG page 135.

EDIT: *Sigh* Ninjas. So many ninjas. :smallsigh:

Hey, you were closer than me... I started out looking in chapter 3. :smalltongue: *tops up the cookie jar*

You can also find it in the Magic Item Compendium (pg. 231) and Player's Handbook II (pg. 215).

You could also note that getting to 3rd level, canonically, requires defeating 3 and 1/3 "shares" of L 1 and L 2 encounters each (13 and 1/3, but you get 1/4 of the treasure each).

Which comes out to (300+600)*3.3333 = 3000 gp.

The wealth by encounter is encoded:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/treasure.htm

Multiplying by 3 and 1/3, you get:

L Marg Total to
1 1000 0
2 2000 1000
3 3000 3000
4 4000 6000
5 5333 10000
6 6666 15333
7 8666 22000
8 11333 30666
9 15000 42000
10 19333 57000
11 25000 76333
12 32666 101333
13 43333 134000
14 56666 177333
15 73333 234000
16 93333 307333
17 120000 400666
18 156666 520666
19 203333 677333
20 266666 880666
21 - 1147333

After that, you need to factor in "wastage" (selling stuff and buying it back, using up charges, etc) -- but this is a pure-SRD solution to the problem.

Hmm, a good, round number for wasteage? How about knocking 10% off of each of those totals? Sound fair?:smallwink:
