Basically, I wanted to try a 2/3 caster subclass for a 1/2 caster class. Naturally this is a horrible idea for a paladin, and awkward to set up for any class. So I just went with giving an artificer little at 3rd level and +2 casters levels at 3rd, bringing their spellcasting up to that of a full caster temporarily.

Tool Proficiency
When you choose this specialization at 3rd level you gain proficiency with calligrapher's supplies. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan's tools of your choice.

Bibliothecary Spells
Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Bibliothecary Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Bibliothecary Spells
Level Spells
3rd Detect Magic, Illusatory Script
5th Locate Object, See Invisibility
9th Counterspell, Tongues
13th Arcane Eye, Resilient Sphere
17th Creation, Telekinesis

Wide Study
By 3rd level, your training has included a wide area of study. You learn two additional cantrips, which do not count against your cantrips known. You also gain proficiency with two skills chosen from Animal Handling, Arcana, History, Insight, Nature, Religion, Sleight of Hand, or Survival.

High Magic
Bibliothecaries often work with wizards and other students of magic, and are able to produce magical effects beyond those created by artificers of similar level. At 5th level, your caster level increases by 2.

Shielding of Knowledge
At 9th level, you gain the ability to use your tools to magically shield yourself from a variety of attacks as a reaction. Until the start of your next turn, you can add 1d4 to your AC and Dexterity saving throws against each attack, including against the triggering attack, and you take no damage from magic missile.

Application of Knowledge.
By 15th level, the amount of lore your have learned is so massive, those around you tend to pick up a variety of knowledge themselves. You regain all uses of your Flash of Genius feature at the end of a short rest.
