View Full Version : [Invasion] Non-linear Worldbuilding - Game Thread

Hi everyone!

This is the game thread for the Invasion Non-Linear Storytelling Game!

We create together the history of a specific time in a fantasy setting by posting new entries in a timeline in a non-chronological fashion, meaning you can create new "events" and those events can always be "placed" before, after or between existing events. This means a player can not just continue the story but also flesh out something already posted, create the events before an established event, create backstories etc. pp

Players are:
+5 Vorpal Bunny
An Aardvark
Lleban
Monsterpoodle
Niobaran
Tentreto
Wasp

The big story for this game is

"The invasion of the Misty Islands and the ultimate defeat of the invaders"

In the Recruitment thread we have decided on the following

Palette of things to include and NOT include:
Yes-List (To be included)
Doppelgangers and other shape changers
Volcanic eruptions
Giant insects
Flying pirate ships
Adventurers
Massive Battles
An old and a new/reformed faith.
Artillery
Magitech

No-List (NOT to be included)
Undead Armies
Uncivilised natives
Goblins
Half-Races (half-elves, half-orcs, half-giant, half-demon, half-vampire etc...)
Gods that walk(ed) the earth.
Horses
Ninjas

Please note: Even if something is on the Yes-List, it doesn't exist in the game from the start, it has to be established during Play first.

Posting works the following way:
1. We have a list of events or scenes you can edit by inserting your event anywhere you want. Copy the History from the previous post. Insert your event. Highlight your new event for easy identification. In order to keep everything manageable your event should be just one or two sentences long (keep it short!).
2. You have total control over what you write and nobody has ownership over anything they introduced. Nevertheless, we are all playing together to create something fun!
3. We should not discuss our plans on what we want to achieve. This is to keep the game surprising and to avoid this becoming "design by committee".
4. Rounds are first come first serve. New Rounds will start every three days or when all players have posted (whatever comes first).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Let the game begin!

The invaders launch one of their greatest offensives yet, shelling numerous outer cities, while various watcher cults simultaneously assassinate many of the non-doppelganger officials.
The Queen, not knowing who to trust, secretly hires a group of ex-pirate adventurers to investigate the rumors of doppelgangers in the court.
Wedding bells ring throughout the land as the queen and the leader of the ex-pirates, known as 'the duellist' are wed.
The druid's council drives all other sentient humanoids from the Skypiercer ranges and claims the territory for themselves and their followers.
Using a force of giant flying locust cavalry, the invaders capture the unbreakable citadel of Urgench and devastate the surrounding lands.
The destruction of the Urgench's walls removes the wards which keep the great Flamespitter dormant. The consequent eruption produces an ash cloud which results in the Year of Two Winters.
The duelist covers the Queen's retreat by turning captured enemy artillery skywards, using small debris to inflict heavy casualties on the locust cavalry. These are later refined into anti-air cannons.
Barely a hundred loyalists survive the siege of the duellist, yet they manage to force the invaders to give up the siege.
A small gathering of druids from the Cult of the Mandible reveal to the High Council that the invader's locusts seem to be being controlled by both magical and technological means: a blasphemy to their cult.
Betraying their own neutrality, the Druid High Council blesses a group of adventurers with Sevenfold lunar powers to send them against the invaders.
Techno-battlemages piloting flying golems armed with magical artillery lead a rapid raid deep into the invaders' territory, destroying many critical supply lines.
A group of adventurers prevents in the last minute the invader's last-ditch effort - a ritual intended to let the Misty Islands fall from the sky and crash into the continent.
A strange insect, clad in solid amber flies to the Queen's court for what appears to be parlay. Only a few know for certain what is discussed, but immediately afterwards, a sizable minority of the invaders strike their colours, raising the royal crest.

The artificers of the volcanic island city of Firefont lead an industrial revolution, using a combination of steam power and magitech to mass produce artillery, airships and animated armor for the war effort.
The High Council confers over the Cult of the Mandible's report and finally assesses the invaders as a dangerous threat to the Sevenfold equilibrium (voting results: 3 in favor, 1 against, 3 in abstention).
Only a few know for certain what is discussed, but immediately afterward, a sizable minority of the invaders strike their colors, raising the royal crest.
One of the outer islands, Floriana, is given in a lease arrangement to the new insect allies.

START
Bards and minstrels tell of strange creatures found far beyond these lands, with the ability to strip the land of life like the locust.
The Druids establish the faith of the Sevenfold, assigning one divine aspect to each of the seven moons orbiting the world.
The alchemist responsible for the invention of the new aeronautic ship is accidentally run over in the street by the Crown Prince's carriage
Eric Flannelfoot, perhaps the greatest artifact retrieval expert of the age "liberates" the great wardstone from the deepest shrine of the Cult of Watchers unaware of the consequences it would have.
The removal of the Wardstone causes the magic veil shrouding the Misty Islands to vanish making the flying islands detectable again to the old enemy
Eric Flannelfoot is slain by the Watching Blade, assassin for the Cult of Watchers. She attempts to return the Wardstone but she is ambushed by the spider king's soldiers who take it from her.
Artificers from the Firecrowned Islands successfully reverse-engineer the Wardstone's enchantments and begin applying them to enhance their technology.
Argnos, the spider king is slain encroaching on the eastern isles.
To accompany their military attacks the invading forces send doppelgangers out to corrupt several Watcher cults and influence them to inadvertently help the goals of the invaders
Queen Aliana Septima offers all pirates a pardon should they join the war efforts. Many become privateers for the Crown
Construction begins on the Great walls of the city Urgench, using Wardstone techno-mages to power the city's defenses
Doppelgangers begin to secretly dispose of members of the Queen's High Council and assume their identities
The Prime minister is exposed as a doppelganger. He responds by taking the Queen hostage and attempting to flee on his stolen airship. The ex-pirates are the only ones with ships fast enough to give chase.
After a nightmarish chase Keldamar Saltfriend, defeats the doppleganger in a duel aboard a burning airship, barely managing to throw himself clear as it spirals down in flames, rescuing the queen in the process.
Wedding bells ring throughout the land as the queen and the leader of the ex-pirates, known as 'the duellist' are wed.
