View Full Version : Star Wars Solo Saga: Zhanty

On the run from Imperials, former saber-guard Zhanty has booked passage
on the Republic-Era ship Aspirant, an old AA-9 Freighter-Liner once used
as a troop transport during the Clone Wars. Now, long after the end of the CIS
and after the rise of the Empire, it moves through the lanes of the Outer Rim,
carrying passengers between far-flung worlds.

Burdened by the events of the recent past, Zhanty contemplates her recent
actions and future course during the week-long voyage. Yet not all is well aboard
the Aspirant. While the three fighters that escort it can protect it from pirates,
nothing can protect its passengers from the danger already aboard...

Clank. Clank. Clank.

Zhanty hears a knocking at her cabin door. It is a small, cramped space that was a supply closet originally, but has been re-purposed, like most rooms aboard this 'luxury' liner. At the moment, it only holds a small bed, a fold-out table, and whatever Zhanty brought with her.

The knocking, as she knows by now, comes from the service droid, a damaged and rebuilt protocol droid that comes by each morning and evening with food for sale to the passengers. She can ignore it, but if she does, there will not be any more until morning unless she can sneak some out of the kitchen.

Only four more days of this...

Zhanty sees Elgrin impale himself on her blade. Gallons of blood gushing from the wound covering her hands. She awakes from the nightmare with a start. Always so much blood in the dreams, almost none in her memory of what happened. Lightsaber wounds cauterize almost instantly.

Only able to sleep in short bursts between nightmares, Zhanty has been carefully using her now blue lightsaber to deface her armor. Burning off all of the symbols of the empire, and carving patterns derived from her own fur striations into the surface, at some point it will need some paint, maybe even some repairs, but for now it will help distance her from what she once was.

Hearing the knock on the door she sheaths her saber, puts on her gloves, and draws the cowl of her cloak over her head to hide her face. Paranoid and fearing agents of the empire around every corner she opens the door a crack, careful to keep it between her and whoever was on the other side, to get the most basic of meals.

The glowing eyes of the droid shed a faint illumination that, even through the small crack in the door, is visible in the dim light. "Hello sir/madam!" it says brightly, "Might I interest you in some fine refreshments? Newly thawed and reheated in the galley. Only ten credits." Something in its shoulder shorts out and sends a small shower of sparks down. It does not seem to notice and waits for Zhanty's response.

There is no sign of anyone else in the hallway, at least not directly outside. She can just barely hear voices and course laughter from further down the hall. Sounds like a pazaak game going on down the hall a little.

A low growl begins to build in Zhanty's throat as her immediate impulse is to decapitate the sparking droid that has the audacity to not address her properly.

No! That is the way of the dark side. She takes a ragged breath attempting to calm down. She manages a simple "Yes" through a clenched jaw as she tries to reign in her emotions.

The droid dutifully turns around and retrieves a cafeteria-style platter from its cart. It slowly turns back towards Zhanty and offers the plate. "Ten credits have been charged to your account," it cheerfully informs her, "Please leave the tray outside your door when you are finished and our service droids will be along to collect it. Have a wonderful day."

Food now in hand, Zhanty can retreat back to her room. After all, everything seems calm and peaceful. However, she feels something pressing at the back of her mind: a niggling, persistent voice warning her of something coming.

Izzarra
2020-05-07, 09:56 PM
She ate the food giving little thought to how good it was. Having been a slave, a street rat, and gone through imperial military training made the taste of food an irrelevant thing to her.

Zhanty has always been one for action.

Previously she would have dealt with a bad feeling like this by going out and knocking some heads together. However, in her current situation required a more ... restrained approach.

Meditation was always part of her training that she did not care much for despite how much emphasis Elgrin put on it, but now seams like a really good time to put it to use.

Crossing her legs she rests her hands on her lap, closes her eyes, and reaches out to see what the force might tell her.

[roll0]
Edit: Well that is an appropriate roll considering what i just said.

Fortunately, the DC for Searching Your Feelings is 15!

Zhanty looks forward in what might be coming. The future is always shrouded and dark, and until recently she did not see much of an issue with that. Now, though, it only seems to block her way.

Even so, she pushes past them and manages to catch a glimpse of the near future, but it does not bring her comfort. She hears the sound of blasters. She sees figures running up and down the halls. Something will happen soon, something that will throw the whole ship into chaos. However, it has not happened yet. But that is of little comfort. Even if she acts now, she might be too late to stop it.

Not too long ago the prospect of a nice little fight would have been exhilarating. Not so much now.

Zhanty dons her armor, then her robe, and draws the cowl over the helmet.

For the first time she regrets not having a pair of stun batons. Nonlethal weapons were not really something one carried when hunting Jedi for the empire.

The lightsabers would draw too much attention, best to leave them in their sheath under the robe and use them as a last resort.

She makes sure her boot knife is ready. It is not much, but it the least conspicuous weapon she has.

Zhanty moves out into the corridor, crosses her arms into her sleeves, and heads towards the pazaak game.

2020-05-09, 06:31 PM
The hall is dark, lit only by the running lights along where the floor and walls meet. However, Zhanty can navigate her way down the hall, past the other cabins on the lower decks, and to a small open area made by knocking down the wall between the hall and one of the narrow rooms. It is barely large enough for a table, but barely is still just enough. Four sentients crowd around it, chattered away and verbally jabbing at each other as they play. The tone is mostly good-natured, for the moment. Games like this, however, can turn to trouble almost without warning.

One of them, a pale Duros, looks up as Zhanty approaches. He does not say anything, but hooded and robed figures tend to draw some attention if their intentions are unknown.

Being back in her armor made Zhanty feel much more comfortable, more herself.

Swallowing the superiority complex established by years of imperial service she says:
"The voyage is long, and the cabins are small, may I watch the game?"

Miltonian
2020-05-10, 08:48 PM
The Duros's lips curl into a smile. "Small indeed," he says. He looks around and, unable to find a seat, gestures towards a box that is almost as tall as a seat. "I don't mind. Anyone against the lady sitting and watching?"

A chorus of muttered 'no's answers him. It seems Zhanty is welcome.

Other than the Duros, there is a Rodian and two humans, all male. By their uniforms, the two humans are part of the crew and the Duros and Rodian are passengers. Much beyond appearance, though, would require drawing them into conversation or other methods of reading people.

Izzarra
2020-05-10, 11:02 PM
Zhanty has been around hundreds of humans on imperial vessels and overheard many mess hall complaints about, well, just about anything you can possibly complain about. It usually does not take much to get them started, and it can be difficult to get them to stop some times.

Perhaps with the right nudge she might be able to send a conversation off on a tangent and learn more about the situation on board the ship.

Taking a seat on the box she says "Oh, my back is sore, how are the mattresses in your bunks?"

Miltonian
2020-05-11, 09:54 PM
One of the humans throws down his cards, fortunately face-down, and opens his mouth. The second, however, beats him to the punch. "Oh please don't start on that again."

The first glowers at him. "There was a hole the size of my head in the sheet. Something chewed it to shreds."

"That's not--"

"To shreds."

The second human sighs heavily. "Beds aren't the best," he mutters, "But that's no call to strangle someone."

The Rodian clears his throat and mutters something about actually playing the game.

The Duros chuckles and leans over towards Zhanty. "Some people do not do well when cooped up. You and that Neimoidian seem to handle it best. He hasn't come out of his cabin since the voyage started."

Izzarra
2020-05-12, 09:08 PM
Seeing the immediate and rather strong response to a relatively innocent question, Zhanty considers the ironic possibility that her attempt to look into the potential impending violence is what causes it to happen.

To the Duros she says "I was working on something, kept me busy." while listening to the argument to see if anything else interesting comes up.

Miltonian
2020-05-13, 06:51 PM
The argument, fortunately, calms down as the two humans begrudgingly go back to their game. However, Zhanty's vigilance might yet be rewarded.

Perception check!

The Duros' eyes light up. "Oh? What sort of thing, if you don't mind?"

Zhanty considers the last few days spent dealing with her grief and carving up her armor.

"Art."

The Duros considers this for a moment, the nods. "Art," he repeats, "I knew an artist once. Strange...well, couldn't tell if they were male or female. Maybe their species doesn't have either, or maybe extra. I don't know. Point is they were an strange one." He blinks. "Not that you are strange. Or maybe you are. Would have to talk with you more to find out."

Over the man's babble, Zhanty does hear the sound of bootsteps coming down the hall. A large party, by the sound of things, and armored.

"Well, it looks like things are about to get interesting." She thinks as she prepares herself.

The pounding feet draw closer, close enough for the others to hear them. They look up from their game and stare down the corridor in confusion. Then, from around a corner, Zhanty sees the unmistakable helmet of an Imperial Stormtrooper pop out and look left and right. "Imperial business," he shouts at Zhanty and the players, "Stay where you are."

Others swarm in behind him and stack up along the wall next to another one of the cabin doors. The Duros whispers, "That's the Neimoidian's room!"

Izzarra
2020-05-18, 10:43 PM
Zhanty has known many troopers, most of them are only following orders. Killing them simply for the uniform they wear is the wrong thing to do, and a trail of bodies is the last thing she needs right now.

She stays still waiting to see what they do with the Neimoidian.

Miltonian
2020-05-21, 07:20 PM
My apologies. I have been on the graveyard shift and it has borked my perception of time.

The troopers do not give the Neimoidian time to flee or even get out of bed. They burst into the room, shouting, "Freeze! In the name of the Emperor, stay where you are!" From the confused squawk of terror and sound of thrashing sheets, it seems the poor passenger was in bed.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I'm unarmed!" the passenger calls. The troopers outside lower their weapons and turn to watch the hall as their companions arrest the Neimoidian. Everything seems to be going smoothly. Were Zhanty in charge, she would be satisfied with their performance.

Then, an Imperial Officer steps around the corner, fingering his pistol. The troopers drag out the prisoner and place him before the man. The officer chuckles. "Pett Omdi," he says, "Former commander for the Trade Federation. You have been on the run quite some time, haven't you?"

Izzarra
2020-05-24, 08:52 PM
Trade Federation, sounds like some group of merchants that only care for wealth. Zhanty wonders what they did to upset the empire, although it does not usually take much.

This officer could use a lesson in discipline, acting like he won a great battle after apprehending an unarmed man that was asleep.

Zhanty's instinct, finely tuned after years living on the streets, is to not get involved. Reinforcing this is the knowledge that many that are tracked down by the empire have done something to bring the wrath of the empire upon them. Yet she wondered what would a Jedi do in a situation like this?

Miltonian
2020-05-25, 11:40 PM
The Neimoidian stays on the ground, hands visible at all times. "I knew this day would come," he mutters.

"Of course." The Imperial Officer glances down the hall and speaks louder, for the benefit of all. "The Empire always finds those who seek to undermine it."

"How unfortunate for you," Pett Omdi says. In a flash, a cloud of small spheres shoots out from the room and surrounds him. They split apart, revealing red eyes and buzz saws and filling the room with chittering laughs. The troopers immediately move to fire, but the droids are upon them first. The little droids are far too quick and hard to hit in this close of quarters. For a moment, it looks like the tide has turned. Then, the officer shoots the Neimoidian in the chest.

The buzz-droids do not react well to the death of their master. And, though they are anti-ship weapons, they are very effective against troopers at close range. They tear apart the stormtroopers and the officer in the space of a few seconds. However, without their master to signal them to stand down, they immediately begin looking for other targets.

The first charges towards the game as the players scramble to get out their blasters. However, Zhanty has put herself in the front, defending them and making her the first target. Her dagger strikes true, tearing into the electronics inside the droid's shell. However, it does not go down and counterattacks.

The knife digs once more into the droid's interior and, having already been through one battle with the stormtroopers, it goes down in a sparking heap. Two more come flying towards them, only to be met with a hail of blasterfire from the card-players. Though they are not soldiers, life out here is rough, and those without some proficiency rarely last long. They manage to hit the droids a few more times, even though the armored shells protect them from most of the destructive energy.

Another slashes at Zhanty while the third attempts to slip past and attack those that shot it.

With the sound of rending metal, Zhanty tears the little droid apart. It sparks angrily for a moment, but the pieces quickly fall still.

The remaining one slashes its victim across the face, grievously wounding him and sending him tumbling backwards. The others, however, finally blast it into oblivion.

The hallway falls silent, though the echoes and reverberations of screams come from elsewhere in the ship. It seems chaos is still going on somewhere aboard.

Zhany has to take several deep breaths to calm herself and regain her senses after getting lost in the battle before retrieving her knife.

She points to the two most responsible looking people and says in the commanding voice she developed during her imperial service "You and you" she then points to the poor man that was just slashed Take him to the medbay now."

She then runs off towards the screams to find out what else is going on.

They hesitate only for a moment before complying. The man will, hopefully, be in safe hands.

Zhanty runs forward, chasing the screams and the sound of blasterfire. However, it is not the familiar, staccato sounds of Imperial weapons, but rather a high-pitched whine. Some unfamiliar weapon, perhaps? Zhanty, if she has the skill in Mechanics, might be able to identify it.

The ship is, fortunately or unfortunately, not large. Zhanty quickly moves through the corridors and finds herself staring at the door to the cargo hold. Behind it, she hears the sound of blaster fire and the shouted orders of a stormtrooper sergeant on the verge of panic as he tries to hold the line against something. Zhanty is unfamiliar with Clone Wars tech, but perhaps the deep-voiced 'Roger, Roger' tips her off just a little bit.

Izzarra
2020-07-06, 01:55 AM
Zhanty's initial thought is to let the fighting go on a little bit longer to thin the number of potential opponents. However she is quick to vanquish that thought from her mind, that is what a sith would do. She pulls out her ligthsabers and considers her options. A boot knife is not adequate for this number of possible opponents so she will have to use a saber. However, fighting with stormtroopers involved she could not use her green saber it would cause too many questions or even worse draw their fire upon her. While she did not want to advertise her presence as a force, user it would probably be best to go in under the guise of her former imperial rank and get the troopers to rally under her command against the droids by the mechanical sound of the voice.

She disconnects the hilts of the twin sabers and places the green bladed one back into her robes as she looks around for something to throw.

Looking for a light object or two that I can use as projectile weapons with the Use the Force, Move Light Object application:

As a Move Action, you can Use the Force to telekinetically lift and move a relatively light object within your line of sight. A successful DC 10 Use the Force check allows you to move an object weighing up to 5 kg a distance of 6 squares in any direction. As a Standard Action, you can use the object as a projectile weapon, but the DC increases to 15. If your Use the Force check beats the target's Reflex Defense, the object hits and deals 1d6 points of bludgeoning damage. Using an object as a projectile weapon is otherwise treated as a ranged attack for the purposes of Talents and Feats that interact with ranged attacks.

The Stormtroopers are trained to follow orders. Unfortunately, those orders typically come from a commanding officer. However, in light of the circumstances, one of them snaps of a hasty salute and says, "Yes sir." Quickly, he organizes the survivors in dragging the dead and wounded out the door, which slams shut behind them.

The droid slams against the ceiling, sparks flying everywhere. Its eyes flicker, its limbs twitch, and, with one final, shuddering gasp, it shuts down. It slams into the ground and lies still. When the door cycles, it is sucked out into Hyperspace, along with three improperly secured crates. Most of the luggage, however, remains inside.

At least the physical evidence of her lightsaber use has been flushed out into the void. As she waits for the ship to equalize the atmosphere so the doors can be safely opened she looks around to see if there are any surveillance systems that she might have to deal with later.

Once the room is re-pressurized and the doors can be opened she goes to the troopers. "Report."

The troopers are applying emergency first aid to themselves and the more severely wounded, though the sergeant stands up and salutes hesitantly. "CO is dead. Half our forces dead, most of the rest wounded, but the ship appears to be ours."

He tilts his helmet. "All due respect, ma'am, you're not wearing a uniform. Mind telling me what your position is?"

While Zhanty had a dress uniform, that she left behind when she deserted, she had always avoided wearing it whenever possible. The humans of the empire always behave weirdly when they see that she is a Cathar, the awkward staring, ill considered questions, pretending she is not in the room, or treating her as if she was an animal.

"Lieutenant, on special assignment. I am not here, I was never here, do you understand. Just a passenger trying to help." She says putting an edge in her voice to imply that her assignment is covert and the details are need to know, and they do not need to know.

I do not think we ever established exactly what rank Zhanty had during the previous game. Sergeant was the rank I proposed using at the time, but she could be a Lieutenant. Let me know if I should retcon this to Lieutenant if that fits the narrative better.

I think Lieutenant would fit better, personally. It's the first commissioned rank, after all.

The sergeant scrutinizes the badge, but years of indoctrination and training prevent him from questioning so obvious a sign of Imperial authority. Especially one that just saved his hide.

"Of course," he says, "That's what the report will say." He relaxes a little, now that the danger has passed and, he assumes, he is among loyal Imperials. "Won't ask for details, then. You have my thanks, though, if it's worth anything."

Not wanting to have to answer a lot of questions by the crew of the ship, Zhanty decides it would be best to be somewhere else.

"I opened an exterior door while the ship is underway to get the droid out before it could self destruct, somebody is going to be here soon wanting an explanation. I will help take the injured to the med-bay. You should check everything that the droid owner brought on board, make sure there are no other surprises."

She help up one of the troopers that can be moved safely and helps them to the med-bay. If there are some that cannot walk then she will send somebody with a stretcher.

"Copy that," the sergeant says. He too begins organizing his men, though he defers to Zhanty, assuming her to be of higher rank. Soon, the wounded are cared for (though the ships' 'medical staff' are a bit wary of dealing with Imperials, which is probably due to the contraband poorly hidden around their clinic), and the sergeant has started to try and calm down the citizens aboard the ship.

This does give Zhanty the perfect opportunity to slip away, if she so desires. Fade into the background. He certainly will not out her.

With the immediate problem dealt with and remaining troopers seen to Zhanty takes the opportunity to disappear.

She returns to her room to recover from her injuries.

Use the Force: My minimum roll is a 17 so I think rolling might not be necessary.
Force Trance (Trained Only)
As a Full-Round Action, you can enter a Force Trance with a DC 10 Use the Force check. In this state, you remain fully aware of your surroundings. Each hour you remain in the trance, you regain a number of hit points equal to your character level. You can emerge from the trance as a Swift Action. If you remain in a Force trance for 4 consecutive hours, you emerge from the trance fully rested (As though you'd rested for 8 hours).

The ship is put on a soft lockdown by the surviving troopers, meaning that Zhanty is able to rest and recover undisturbed. The trip still has a few days left to go, and the captain announces that their course remains unchanged. It seems that Zhanty will have all the time she needs to rest and restore herself. Furthermore, she can rest secure in the knowledge that, for now at least, her presence shall be kept a secret from the Empire, ironically by way of the unquestioning loyalty of its troopers.

Her room will be safe for the rest of the voyage. However, if she wishes to step back out and investigate before the ship reaches its destination, that would allow her to do a little more investigation.

Zhanty spends the rest of the day recuperating.

The next day she makes her way around the ship, under the pretext of stretching her legs, to see if anything else is trying to blow up the ship.

Fortunately, Zhanty finds a distinctive lack of people trying to blow up the ship on the first day. The card players, however, do try to flag her down when she passes, if she is willing to be flagged down.

Zhanty goes over to the card players and silently find a place to sit.

They nod as Zhanty arrives. "Hey," the Duros says, "You, uh, you ran off rather quickly there. You...alright?"

"Yeah. I had a bad feeling about something, had to check it out."
