Looking at the base familiar I thought it lacking so I then turned to Improved Familiar, believing at first that it could give standard familiars a boost. I was wrong. So instead of getting upset or making my own feat, I have decided to add an option to the feat Improved Familiar.
At 7th level an arcanist with Improved Familiar may instead improve an existing familiar. Doing so grants the familiar a +4 to Intelligence and treats them as a magical beast of half the master's character levels for the purpose of feats and skill points. No skill the familiar possesses may have a rank higher than the rank its master has, unless it is a base skill for that animal. Then it can only reach the master's hit dice +3 in rank. All racial skills, all skills the base animal can use, are treated as class skills by the familiar.
