L5R 5E build advice

I have no idea if anyone in these forums even plays L5R but I'll give it a shot anyway. I've joined a group recently and have a pretty run-of-the-mill swordsman character written up, I'm looking for advice on which rings/skills/abilities to take and upgrade that improve melee combat. Which stance should I be focused on? Do any abilities combo together in said stance? Is defensive or offensive combat preferable? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(PS: I joined this group to replace a guy who was a pretty hardcore powergamer, so I'm not looking to be super OP, just less all over the place stats & ability wise).

The thing about being a swordsman in L5R is that its a very versatile base. Can you tell a little bit about what kind of game it is? Where it's set, what clans and families the other players have (including power gamer)?
A swordsman bodyguard, duelist, monster-hunter and soldier are all bushi classes, but they'd call for very different builds.
