at what level does this feat lose its power?

Unfortunately, unless you're something charisma based, that piddling d8 is gonna fall off pretty quick. If I'm being -very- generous, I'd expect it's gonna start noticably lagging by level 7ish at the latest. It's gonna be behind the damage you can do with spells well before then unless you're a paladin or multiclassing heavily into non-caster stuff.
