You've rushed in, and you and the princess have dispatched her guards. Those who were meant to be keeping her safe have turned traitor, and you don't know where the next strike will come from.

The princess' room is not too far from where the celebration is being held. It's not a massive affair-the city still has to work, after all-but there are plenty of people there who are eagerly awaiting a sight of her.

Nilvalor

"Highness! Are you hurt?" Nilvalor asks, offering her a purple-gloved hand for support. "What's happened to you? Your men?"

After examining the princess for any sign that she's been injured, Nilvalor looks around at the bodies of her former guards, then at the other newcomers to the room. Knowing full-well that the remaining people (and construct) on their feet had just fought in her defense, Nilvalor nevertheless valiantly places himself between the princess and everyone else. With a sideways glance back at her, he says, "Princess, I am Nilvalor Piniago, Marquess of Tsurlagol, son of the Duke of Procampur. I will keep you safe while I yet live. Do you know any of them?" he asks, looking over the rest carefully. "Who are all of you?"

The spearhead was bloody. There hadn’t been time for the sword, so Kyra didn’t draw it.

Thrust. Step. Thrust.

That was how the armies of her hone fought. A wall of men, thrusting, stepping forward, and thrusting again.

There was always the moment where the phalanx broke apart. A lucky arrow volley taking some of the front down. Spears or shields breaking. Morale breaking.

Those were the times to let your spear fly and do the work with the sword.

This was not one of those times.

Kyra knelt down and picked up her helmet from where she had let it fall. Like the sword, there hadn’t been time for the helmet, so let it drop to the ground to bring her shield to bear. With a quick inspecting of the crest and finding it relatively free of blood, she tucked it under her arm and turned to the princess.

Your highness, are you alright?

Yes, yes! I'm fine. Princess Katrina Eversea let out with a pant, adrenaline fading from her system.

I don't.... I... She started looking around the room, before Nilvaor walked over. Um.... She took a moment to formulate her thoughts. Yes. She answered him, rubbing her head to clear it. They all sought an audience with me. She remarked. Where's Shelly!? She realizes looking at the floor her eyes wide in panic, before a turtle lurches out from under the bed. Katrina gleefully picks up her pet. Oh, Shelly, it's okay. It's over! She assures the turtle. Do any of them have notes? Katrina asks starting to lean over the closest assailant.

Wendelstein surveyed the scene and took absentmindedly a pull from his pipe. With annoyance he realized a splatter of blood had put out the expensive pipe weed. Putting his shield on his back and dropping his staff in the cradle of his arm, he laboriously started to clean and restock his pipe. If he was honest he had to admit that he liked this process actually more than the smoking itself.
Absentmindedly he spoke a word of power to heal a cut on the princess' arm.

"You'll live. And if you want to stay that way we better get away from here, as it looks like someone higher up here wants your head.
There's a nice inn a few minutes away from here with good wine and very service oriented wen... ah 'waitresses'"

To the other men he said: "The name is Wendelstein, Master Smith of Gond."

Bastion

Character Image (https://living-eberron.fandom.com/wiki/Moss)
Bastion is about as tall as most humans, but he sometimes seems taller, given his broad shoulders, upright posture, and the fact that he is seemingly made entirely of metal. A deeper observation reveals that this metal plating is merely his outer shell, and that his somewhat artificial body contains strands of wood and other, indefinable organic matter. Apart from the metal plating, Bastion wears only few items of clothing -- a green cloak with a hood, and a belt and green cloth around his waist. Regarding weaponry, he wields a glaive as his primary, and has a rapier and two hand axes on his side.

During the fight, Bastion had fought vigorously, first cutting and bashing a path towards Katrina's vicinity, and then focusing on those next to her, protecting her from incoming strikes as good as possible.

As the battle had died down, Bastion stood calmly for a moment, his hands resting on the polearm. As some of the others had introduced themselves, he springs into action himself.

When he greets her, his bow shows respect and humility despite the slight lack of elegance in the Warforged movement.

"Salutations, Her Serene Highness Princess Katrina, my name is Bastion, and I come with the best wishes of House Cannith. As a gift of the House, I shall put myself under Her service until She dismisses me from it."

While his voice sounds slightly mechanical, and the phrase has more memorized than natural, the intonation hints that he is more than capable of intellect and not only repeating words back.

Nilvalor

Nilvalor puts on an air of greeting the others warily, particularly the powerfully built mechanical creature standing a hair too close for his liking. It's not as if they didn't all just have their best opportunity to harm the princess if that's what they wished, but for appearances it wouldn't do to greet them warmly and beg for their help. He was the son of a Duke, after all. Better to appear dignified and capable, but willing to listen to the advice of his lessers when it proved sound.

"Wendelsmith is right, your Highness," Nilvalor says, purposefully getting the name wrong. "We really should leave as soon as you're able, although...it's much too dangerous for you to walk the streets as Princess Katrina right now. If you'll permit me, Highness, we need to disguise you.

"Ella!" An owl glides across the room from its perch on the window and lands gracefully on Nilvalor's outstretched arm. "Go down the hall and look for any sign there are more traitors laying in wait."

Eager to be the first to find something of use, Nilvalor joins the princess in searching over her attackers.

Wendelstein was too distracted by the warforged to care for a correction of his name.
"By Gond's burning left testicle - you are not just a construct. You are an honest to Gond Warforged! Is it true? Do you posses a soul? And there I thought this day was a bust."
The glee in Wendelstein's voice and face is severely at odds with the carnage of this little battlefield around him.

Your investigation does not turn up anything useful.

Your familiar does determine that you're alone, for the moment, though.

Searching through the attackers, you're unable to find anything indicating who sent them, or why this attack was carried out now.

So, for situations like this, where you're all working towards the same goal, I'll allow a maximum of two checks. You can Help one another, but think carefully about who performs what actions. Because Nilvalor made his investigation check BEFORE I announced this ruling, you can still make two more to investigate the scene.

Bastion

After any potential dialogue with Princess Katrina, Bastion will turn to Wendelstein.

He nods politely and speaks composed.

"I am Warforged, yes, Gorgon-J, 3rd generation. There have been instances of successful resurrection rituals, suggesting that we do, in fact, possess a soul, yes. Regarding me as an individual, I can only be as certain as any other being."

"Good enough for me. We must have a little talk once this business here is sorted out."
Wendelstein smiled as he turned to the Princess and that... Elf? Nah, to little sharpness to the ears. A halfer than: "I might not be a professional in the area of intrigue and political assassination, but even I would ask my would be assassins not to carry notes and addresses with me. Look in their purses if they carry foreign coin. And while you are at it, keep the purses. And other small valuables. Maybe you can buy off the next wave of assassins - or hire your own mercenaries to discourage them."

Nilvalor

Swallowing a command for the tall human to watch his foul language around the princess, Nilvalor contents himself with pretending he hadn't heard as he finished up his search. Gond's burning left testicle? He grimaces to himself before rising to his feet, hiding his distaste. "Nothing," he says, rejoining their conversation. "You're likely right that we won't find anything, but it never hurts to be sure."

He usually didn't notice feeling small around others, but among present company, he found himself fidgeting nervously. The tall human had an air of authority that he sincerely hoped others felt he had. The warforged appeared capable of holding Nilvalor's head in his hand and cracking it like a walnut. It's fine, he reassured himself. If they were going to do anything hostile, they would've done it already. You're the son of a duke, you're the son of a duke, you're the son of a duke...

Clearing his throat, Nilvalor asks, "this inn you speak of, you've been there recently? Did they have rooms available? We can't go bouncing around from inn to inn, that's sure. If anyone recognizes the princess after we leave here, no doubt whoever's behind this will be able to buy that information for a flagon of ale, or less.

Nilvalor

Ushering the princess over to a chair by the vanity, Nilvalor says, "If I may princess, we don't have time for a debate. Let me make a few changes and we can be on our way."

Pulling out a small leather case, Nilvalor flips it open revealing a variety of cosmetics and an assortment of dyes. As he begins to work, he distracts himself by forgetting his own advice, and starts to debate Wendelstein even as he's supposed to be busy fabricating a disguise. "It's perfectly understandable why you would think a simple cloak with a hood would suffice given that you're not of royal blood. For us," Nilvalor says, emphasizing the word heavily to link himself to the princess, "a hood may hide part of the face, but when you're as recognizable as we are in and around our lands, you can't hide behind a simple hood. You have to hide in plain sight. Show people what they expect to see and let them keep searching for the real you elsewhere.

"My family has been doing this for generations. It's the only way to travel inconspicuously in our own city, or the rest of the Vast for that matter. Thankfully," he says, reaching for the hair dye, "we're nowhere close right now so I can travel without a disguise and still avoid the bother of being hailed everywhere I go.

"Oops," Nilvalor says, smudging the foundation he spent too much time applying. "I mean, perfect. Certainly no one could recognize you like that," he says, trying to give his voice real conviction and falling a bit flat. "Maybe grab a cloak just to cover that bit up is all."

Make a Disguise Kit (Intelligence) check, please. Help and Guidance are possible.

As for gathering valuables... Look, I ain't gonna track minor expenditures, like housing, food, replacing arrows and such. But I will also not bother with figuring out insignificant loot.

You all bundle the princess up, and head out. You try to take the back streets, but they're pretty crowded.

Make a check to try to avoid anyone noticing the princess. Stealth would make sense from Katrina, but feel free to make any kind of check you think would be appropriate and I'll adjudicate from there.

As he removes the make-up from her face, Nilvalor smiles proudly and says, "thank the gods I was there to help keep you safe Princess. I would never have forgiven myself had anything happened to you this night." Trying to catch her eye, he continues by saying, "in fact, until I am sure you're safe, that can be my only thought."

Standing back up to his full height, Nilvalor exclaims. "There now, much better. You truly are radiant, my Lady. Are you feeling alright? No doubt this has been a trying evening to say the least, but if you have the strength, we cannot rest yet. He took a long pull from his pipe and blew a smoke ring in the general direction of the half elf.

Bastion's thought circle around the princess and his mission. The princess had apparently not made her mind about whether she would accept the gift or not. He thus makes a decision, difficult to him at least: Start with step two instead. Show her that you are useful to her and her affairs.

He waits respectfully for the others to speak first. "House Cannith representatives had arranged an audience, when the date for Her arrival had become public. I came to embrace this generous opportunity." He pauses shortly. "We cannot hide forever, but for now, it seems elementary to me, to find out who is to be trusted. Depending on the scope of the conspiracy, addressing the authorities without further understanding could mean more danger than support." It is clear that those words come not easy for him.

Katrina rubs her temples I..... do not believe it could have been my fathers, they would really have no reason to want to end my life, as the eldest sibling the lion's share of the tutoring in statehood has gone to me, my siblings are merely backups should something happen to me. However as much as I don't want to believe it, it's entirely possible one of them would seek to assassinate me. I thought we were closer then blood, but perhaps not.....

I do not believe this city sought my death, it would be a diplomatic nightmare to have me die on their watch, and I haven't seen any war preparations that would suggest that they seek to attack. However perhaps enemies of the ruling family drugged my guards into a berserk state in an attempt to jockey power by "pointing to their poor leadership." Katrina air quotes.

The money is good. The recognition is better. And to prove my worthiness to Tyche is best.

That said, Kyra sets her helmet upon the table, props her spear against the wall with her shield. Against the shield goes her sword. And then she begins unbuckling her armor. As each piece of the burnished bronze metal is removed, a hard, lean body is revealed, with only one jagged scar on her upper arm marring an otherwise perfectly toned and conditioned body. As Kyra removes her chest plate, she is wearing simple, unassuming clothes. With no adornments or jewelry, it is obvious she does not come from wealth.

For the first time, the foppish Halfer - Nilvalor, as Wendelstein remembered - had his full attention:
"What spells are those? Considering the current circumstances, it could be vital to know the capabilities of each other. In the fight I mainly saw you slitting throats of distracted foes - a commendable tactic in and of itself - did you learn all that at court?"

To the paladin taking of her armor he said:
"As much as I can understand you wanting to enjoy yourself a bit, I hope you are aware that the next attack could happen at any moment. We have no wards against scrying and I myself would have no trouble locating any person that I know of in this city with a simple prayer. Not to mention objects she carries with her.
Here, I didn't intent to empty this flask by myself." Wendelstein lied as he presented the bottle and quickly produced another cup from a cupboard.

Nilvalor

Though easily offended, Nilvalor masters his facial expression, staring back at Wendelstein with a neutral look. No doubt even a commoner such as this could guess that growing up in a Royal Court meant a life of intrigue and danger as evidenced by Princess Katrina's own position.

"I see you noticed my humble contribution to dispatching those assassins," Nilvalor begins, waving a hand as if to dismiss his own accomplishments, "whereas I must admit I have no memory of you doing anything until after the fighting was already done." Careful not to allow Wendelstein the time to interject or respond, Nilvalor carries on quickly. "In any case, this is hardly the time for boasting about past accomplishments or the extent of one's power. I am loath to do so even when time permits," Nilvalor lies, eager to show what he can do without revealing his limited mastery of the arcane. "The princess is still in danger. That should be our one and only concern."

Hoping that he has sufficiently redirected the conversation, Nilvalor looks back and forth between Wendelstein and Kyra. "If we're going to be waiting here until morning, none of us should be seen any more than is necessary. Someone may have spotted us coming out of the palace and we can't risk leading anyone back here."

With a flourish of his his hand and the words of a spell uttered, Nilvalor transforms into a tall human that could be Wendelstein's cousin, albeit with red hair and horrifyingly bad teeth for some reason. He speaks in a much rougher voice and says, "by tomorrow the rumors will be traveling faster than we ever could. We need to take control of them now while there's still time. I will go, either to the docks or the north gate, and spread the rumor that Princess Katrina has left, either on a ship home or on the road north to escape her attackers. That should buy us some time. But which rumor to spread? We cannot take that route in the morning, whatever else we may do.

What do you think?" he asks the princess, but turns to look at the other humans for their opinion as well. His eyes glance quickly over at the Warforged, unsure whether a word of affirmation from him would help or hurt his cause.

So you could start by explaining to me who your fathers are, what they are like and how they look. Also how your family is structured on the whole. Having two royal fathers isn't the most usual situation - at least it wasn't before I went to study with my master."

With a slight nod of approval regarding the wardrobe plan towards Wendelstein, Bastion moves the furniture with no apparent difficulty. He then joins into the discussion:

"Sir Wendelstein's observations are correct, while our species anticipates wear and tear by daily self maintenance and repair cycles, these do not substantially compromise our attention to our environment. I must note however, that I do not share the night vision of forest or underground dwellers. Though there are a few first successful prototypes in the Gorgon-V series, I do not yet benefit from these improvements." he pauses shortly. Nilvalor

Since it couldn't possibly be his own behavior that caused the princess to ignore his question, Nilvalor's eyes narrow at the Warforged. It was his fault, certainly. The princess didn't appear to care for him or the idea of his services, and who could blame her? Then that thing just had to make a suggestion about Nilvalor's plan to spread rumors about Katrina fleeing in the night. Surely the others would've understood its genius if not for the construct butting in.

Nilvalor's thoughts are interrupted as Katrina tears from the room, feet pounding down the hallway. Looking frantically at the other two, Nilvalor stands speechless. When his brain catches up, he sends Ella out the window with instructions to watch the main door of the tavern and listen for anyone leaving that might be discussing the princess. After a minute passes and trying to make it appear like he doesn't know Katrina or Kyra, Nilvalor slips downstairs in his disguised form and buys a drink, carefully listening for any sign that someone might have identified Katrina.

Kyra awakens with the sunrise.

Standing up from where she had stretched out with her armor, she unrolls her clothes which she had used for a pillow, her only apparent attempt at comfort. Donning the tunic and fastening it with a simple leather belt about her waist, she then goes about polishing the bronze armor. Once done, she begins to strap the armor to her body, the bronze fitting over her like a second skin. And, after the last night, you can also see that the muscles engraved and sculpted on the armor's various pieces are a reflection of the hard muscle you have seen to be underneath it.

Once she is armored, Kyra dons her helmet, but leaves it pushed up and back on her head so that her face can still be seen. With her javelins tucked safely behind the shield, her sword strapped to her waist, and the spear in her other hand, she looks every bit the warrior she has proven herself to be.

Well. They have closed off the city. The princesses disappearance has been discovered. I am going to go and offer my services to the town watch. Soldiers like to talk while they are on duty, and officers more so. It helps pass the time while nothing exciting is going on.

Nilvalor was accustomed to all manner of speech. Diplomacy. Inspiration. Storytelling, deception, flattery, humor. Wheedling and cajoling. Even groveling. Intimidation as well, though he had to admit, trying to intimidate someone had always seemed like a fool's errand. But despite all his experience, Nilvalor had yet to figure out how to master his arch-nemesis: the awkward silence.

He tried to hold his tongue as he deferentially helped the princess apply her make-up, creating a disguise so they might walk the streets unmolested. All the while he looked to her and tried to make eye contact, desperate for a word. Any word. He knew it was bad when he wished Wendelstein would return, even if it would no doubt lead to some unpleasant argument. He began almost to hope she would call him a frog instead of a prince, a fraud instead of royalty, if only to end the miserable quiet.

Then Bastion spoke. Despite his carefully laid preparations to woo the princess, Nilvalor was too relieved at the sound of another voice to worry about his added plans from last night to ignore the Warforged. But he did have a reputation to maintatin. "I had hoped you might follow at a distance where it would be assumed you weren't with us, but if you insist on coming along and staying close, I will do what I can to disguise you as well once I'm through helping Princess Katrina. It could very well be, that the earliest victims were used to further poison other ones. If they haven't gotten to you yet, I'd suggest to be very carefully what you consume. Prefer your own canteen and no food that you haven't prepared yourself or watched being prepared.
This Atin, were could we find him? It would help if we could examine him and see if there is a cure to this poison."

Turning back to look at Wendelstein questioningly, Nilvalor watches a dangerous smile spread across his face. Furtively checking the others for their expressions, he struggles to understand what's happening. If he'd been worried they wouldn't have the stomach to get their hands dirty, now he realizes the rest are made of stronger stuff than he is.

As they walk East, he steals a few glances at the princess. Truly, he should've done more research. What little he had done was woefully inadequate. A shy maiden, beautiful as the sunrise and brighter than noon, the stories said. As if that was the whole story and meeting her was just a formality before marriage vows and wedding cake. She was not a flower wilting under the pressure of having her life threatened. She was a blade, beautiful to be sure, but with an edge.

There's at least three other guards easily in sight, stretched across the street to catch anyone attempting to make it past. There seem to be more in the two buildings they've chosen to establish their checkpoint at-both of them ordinary homes.

Judging by the size, you'd say not more than a dozen guards could reasonably fit in the buildings, so almost certainly less than that, but an unknown amount for the moment.

And why would a sergeant send a note to a soldier? If you want verify my order, that is your affair. But if you need a note, I will write you one to take to her.

Kyra thinks her spear into the road so it remains standing while she takes out a piece of parchment and begins to write, speaking the words as she does so.

Nilvalor nods automatically at Wendelstein's request, remembering a moment later that he's still invisible. "Oh. Yes, yes of course." But he doesn't remove the spell. Instead he travels along with Wendelstein, opening his mouth at one point as if to speak, but thinks better of it. Not all folk were as easygoing around voices or people appearing out of nowhere.

"I thought that went well," Nilvalor comments on the walk back to their companions, finally dispelling the invisibility as the time is coming to a close anyway. "Gond smiles on you, no doubt."

But that was a neat trick of you - turning invisible. What else can you do? Honestly this time. I can't make plans when I don't know what tools I have to work with."
Wendelstein replied much more amiable than before.

"Thank you," Nilvalor says, wondering just how honest to be. As Wendelstein describes the need to make plans, Nilvalor responds. "I can certainly be a tool for all manner of things," he says, seemingly without a trace of irony. "I'm adept at persuading others if Gond should ever be distracted while you try to negotiate," Nilvalor says, feeling unsure if his talents in that arena were actually useful. "I've a few spells that grant me the ability to disguise myself or to make myself or others entirely invisible, as you've seen. Even without that, I'm fairly quiet and capable of passing right under people's noses in certain circumstances." Nilvalor trails off, wondering to himself whether these are really the talents he should be espousing.

You pocket it and turn to the door, ready to rejoin the group, when you see the handle turning. Atin's room is on the ground floor, and there is a window you could bolt out of, or you could attempt to lie your way through whoever's coming in.

Because I am trying to help you, now hold still!

I would like to use my Channel Divinity to activate Peerless Athlete, giving me advantage on Strength checks.

[roll0], [roll1]

If I cannot use my Channel Divinity before the grapple check, then just ignore the second roll.

I am not going to take the time to type out a long string of words that will get censored by the profanity filter, but believe me, they are there.

Edit 2: wait. Forgot to add my proficiency bonus since I am trained in athletics. That’s +3 to both of those rolls.

So, just checking-+6 to Athletics? If yes, this post is valid. If no, it is not.

Also, you might want to use a show of force/charm him/knock him out or something. Then question him.

You're able to maintain a grip on him, though just barely, He struggles, cussing up a storm as well.
