"Chakram: Ranged Martial Weapon; 1 gp, 1d6 (S) or 1d8 (L) x2, 30 ft., 1 lb., Slashing
The chakram is a simple, elegant and highly portable thrown weapon. It is a flat, open-centered metal discus with a sharpened edge. You can wield the chakram as a melee weapon, but it is not designed for such use; you take a -1 penalty on your attack roll with the weapon and must make a DC 15 Reflex save or cut yourself on the blade (½ damage, no Str modifier). You do not need to make this save if wearing heavy armor."

What about with natural armor? Would that provide any protection if you used it as a melee weapon? Granted I don't see using it in melee much, if at all, but would any racial natural armor bonus help? I was thinking that it shouldn't because your still holding it with your hand but it is natural ARMOR your "holding it with".
It's from Pathfinder rules if that matters at all.

As written, natural armor (regardless of magnitude) is not heavy armor, and so you have to make the save. Your GM is welcome to step in h though if a rule doesn't make sense.

That is kinda crappy, but natural armor is not heavy armor. It should specify gauntlets instead of heavy armor, IMO.
