What is the source of a Dull Grey Ioun Stone, it is mentioned in the Expanded Psionic handbook (pg.160) but no price or original source is given.

So where is it from?

I wanna say it's the DMG but I'm not sure. I do know it's the cheap 25 GP one that just orbits your head.

You can paint it another color and pocket the difference

The spell absorbing ioun stones (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#iounStones) turn dull grey once they're depleted.

It's in the 3.0 DMG, listed on the chart on page 220.

It's good as a light source, if you cast a light spell on it. Or for decoration. Or like a distractor Mirror image of your other Ioun stones if an enemy tries to snatch one.

But its best use is as a perpetual sentry for a permanent rune of Fell Drained Magic Missile.

When there were ioun stones that had a limited number of uses and could be used up, they would turn grey and no longer have any magical properties other than being able to float around you as though they did. I think Pathfinder got the idea to cast Continual Flame on one as a permanent hands-free light source.

Paint it expensively and hope it's targeted by would be snatchers instead of your good ones. A decoy. Ioun insurance.

What I find interesting, is that the ones that are specified as being able to burn out and become dull gray are all ellipsoid, however, the the dull gray ones are listed as being able to be any shape. One wonders if they intended the ioun stone to have a possible fail mechanic when creating, and didn't include it; or if there was some other method of creating or story behind the dull gray ones?

I can confirm that it is in the 3.0 version of the DMG, p.220 as previously mentioned above.
