The car you are in pulls up to a dingy looking building in downtown L.A. There is one entrance, and a large CLOSED sign with bold red letters is posted, making it seem even more as if this building has been abandoned. It seems to be a bout three stories high, with windows only on the third story, and even these are closed, with dilapidated looking blinds barring any view inside. There is also one window on the ground floor, however is has been boarded up, and you cannot see inside. The door itself is glass, however it is dirty and cracked, and once again, you cannot see inside. Next door to the building on its right is a pawn shop with the word PAWN written on a red glowing neon sign. Between the two buildings is an alley way that slopes downwards towards the back of the buildings. On the left of the old building are a chain link fence, and then an overgrown field. To the casual eye, this area would seem an ordinary down town slum, however you know differently. You have been given job offers by a mysterious organization with ties to the government, and they have brought you here. The driver, a man in an unassuming dark suit, tell you to get out and go inside.

Once inside you see what looks like a lobby area with a desk inside. The area looks old, but at the desk sits a receptionist. She looks at you and says, “Oh you must be here about the ad in the newspaper, go on up.” You have never heard about any ad in the newspaper, but still you walk through one of the two doors on either side of her desk. Suddenly the building loses all pretenses of having been abandoned. The hall is painted white, not grimy like the outside and lobby, but bright, fresh paint. The lights overhead are all working, and the hall is brightly lit. The hall turns right, and you see an elevator, and a door that reads “To Garage.” On the opposite side, back towards the front, is a door that reads “Security,” and further down, the hall bends back towards the front, to the door on the opposite side of the receptionist’s desk. A man stands in front of the elevator; obviously he has been waiting for you.

“Hello. My name is Jack. That is all you need know for now. You have been recruited into the S.C.A.R.S. whether you were willing or not does not matter, you will serve your country. Come on, I’ll show you around.”

He opens the door to the room labeled “Security.” There are five men sitting at computers monitoring surveillance from outside, which seems odd, as you couldn’t see any cameras on the exterior. The men wear black B.D.U.s and carry Glocks at their sides. “These are the security men; basically it is their job to make sure that when we’re working, we’re not disturbed." The men wave, it seems like this isn’t the first time they’ve been introduced today. After giving your name, Jack takes you to the elevator, and you head to the second story.

The elevator opens into another brightly lit corridor that branches off at a T. He points to a door at the end and says, “That leads to our firing range, usually we have no need for it, but the techies generally need somewhere to test new gadgets and such.” He turns where the corridor branches off. There are four rooms down the hallway, each locked with a card-key access device except for the first. The unlocked room is labeled “Lockers.” The next room has the word “Explosives.” Jack pulls out a card and opens it, inside you see an array of C-4, detonators, several types of grenades, as well as different chemicals, all lined up on shelves. He looks at you and says “Don’t get any ideas; all equipment is given only when necessary." The third room down says “Guns,” the room is identical, except instead of explosives, there is a formidable array of guns. There are several Glocks lined up on the table, next to several boxes of ammunition, on a shelve nearby there are several G3 assault rifles, with a shelve of ammo next to them as well. He opens the final room, which is filled with equipment, black duffel bags, armored vests, rope, and all sorts of other tactical equipment.

You go up one more floor, again opening up on a brightly lit hallway. He walks past a room full of computers, and says “That’s where the techies work, most of them are off today." He continues down the hall, there are several offices, he points one out to you, “This is yours”, he says. It’s not very big, but it has a computer, a desk, and a stand up metal cabinet inside. At the end of the hallway, he opens a glass door into a room with a large circular table, and a large digital display on the wall. “This is the briefing room.”

You all arrive separately, but he gives the tour to everyone. Once everyone is in the briefing room, he begins a speech about the S.C.A.R.S.

“Welcome. Whether you have joined us willingly, because of money issues, or simply because you had no choice, it makes no difference to me. You are here and that is enough. Now, you might be wondering, where is here. I’ll explain. For as long as ten years, the government has been tracking reports of the paranormal, ghosts, undead, creatures, aliens, and for as long as ten years, the official stance has been that as there is no hard proof, none of these things exist. That has not changed. The government has however realized that there is a need to counteract these forces due to a recent surge in reports from credible sources of paranormal activities. Two months ago, a small group of agents were tasked with finding out about paranormal activity inside of the U.S. What they found, we do not know, as these agents are now dead, all having killed themselves on the same night, in separate locations. It became clear that an organization dedicated to the investigation of the paranormal was needed, thus the S.C.A.R.S. were born. Officially we do not exist. If we are discovered, the government does not know we exist. Our funding comes from small budget cuts from several government organizations.”

This was a week ago. Now you sit in a dark four door SUV in the rain, in a rural part of southern California. You have been called in to investigate a recent crash site, and have been given fake (Military) credentials to deal with local police. Officially, this is a downed military plane that crashed due to severe weather conditions, in reality, there was no military plane, and no one knows what crashed. That’s for you to find out.

You have been given equipment for this mission, anything in general equipment that might be helpful with a purchase DC under 10 is available, just say in your first post what if anything, you have grabbed. In addition to this you have been given professional radios, fatigues to complete the military disguise, fake military IDs, a GPS receiver, and if you want them, a glock apiece.

The SUV is parked on the edge of town, right where the police have cordoned off the area. You know each other fairly well by now, as you have been introduced and done some basic training together. Take a minute to describe your character, and then… Begin!

Alexander is a child of 12 years of age. Today he wears a shirt with a stylized zombie-hunters logo on the front that is apparently from some videogame, and has simple bluejeans on. He has a mid-sized backpack on his shoulders. His eyes are a curious mix, brown on the outside and green closer to the pupil, and he has medium length black hair. "Well then, gentleman," he says slowly. "Shall we begin?"

(grabbed a regular holster for the glock. If I have military creds, i'm not gonna need the concealed holster right now.)Matthew looks like someone you'd find in hollywood. Blond hair styled in a messy look, and baby blue eyes. He's in the fatigues given him, with a glock in a holster at his side. His backpack is slung over his left shoulder. He carries a Winchester rifle in his hand Oh yes, let's go. Where to first?

(Kain also grabbed just regular holster for glock, due to his fake credentials.)

Wearing fatigues given to him, Kain looks pretty much like everybody you would meet on street. His glock hangs in holster by his waist and backpack is slumped over his back and shoulders. His blond hair is trimmed on military short, but not next to skin. If one would look very carefuly, he might noticed an extra shirt under fatigues, giving him extra protection. He looks around, than at Alex, and says to him:

"No sense in wasting any more time. I agree, we should move."

Turning to Matthew, he proposes:

"A little reckon perhapse?"

Max

Max is a black man of average height and build, with short black hair. He's comfortably dressed out in the fatigues provided. One notices only the gleam of metal where you'd expect his left hand to be. The "hand" fits seamlessly into a modified pistol grip of his stainless Benelli M1.

Overhearing Kain's suggestion, Max turns and speak to the group."Yes, we'd better recce the area before we move in to the crash site."

Max leaves his Benelli in the SUV and strides up to the policeman in charge of the cordon, and says, "Hello, I'm Major Max Clark of the United States Air Force Safety Board. Me and my team are here to investigate this crash site. Has the area been secured so we can move in?"

Getting out of the SUV into the driving rain, you see a police car up ahead. There are two officers standing outside in the rain looking miserable.

"Hello M-m-major," says the first, stuttering with the cold, "we've cordoned off the area. Ain't nobody came in this way since it 'appened. We got some call from somebody 'igher up sayin' we're to hand off the area to yous, so we'll git on outta your way." Looking grateful at your presence, he takes a passing glance at your credentials, barely even pausing to see them, its obvious he doesn't want to stay any longer than he has to.

"Well g'night Major, we'll git outta your way." He steps into his car, the other officer tips his hat at you, before walking to the other side, cowboy walking like a true country officer, and getting in.

"Oh," he says, stepping back out, "crash site's over thata way, he says, pointing into a muddied field out to the east side of the road. "Dunno if there's any survivors, man we spoke to told us not ta' send in a ambulance. Mighty weird if ya' ask me. Anyways, good luck." They then drive north, into town.

Alex, you computer hums to life at your fingers, and you type in the search query "Blackberry Falls." You get a basic layout of the town, which seems to be mainly a small downtown area built around three or four farms, a largely unindustrialized town, they subsist off of the small businesses in town and the farm's crops. None of the paranormal databasing sites that you find have any references to the small town, however checking into the past new-papers, you find several unsolved disappearances over the past 8 months.

Kurt looks quite imposing, wearing a sharp airforce uniform reminiscent of a lieutenant, complete with hat. In one ear is the headset, while the Glock is holstered quite openly on his left side in a cross-draw holster. In his left hand is his briefcase, held nonchalantly. His brown hair is combed backwards, and his eyes are concealed by a pair of enormous mirrored sunglasses.

He held out a hand to the police officer.

"Lieutenant Kurt Scarborough. If you don't mind, we need to examine the wreckage, so could you and your men clear the way and keep everyone out?"

EDIT: Damn, too slow.

After shaking the police officer's hand, he follows behind the others.

Alex, you quickly catch up with the others, having finished the research that you started on the long road trip there (research takes one to four hours depending, about two and a half in this case). The police officers have left by the time you catch up. The field is muddy, and those of you who aren't wearing the provided BDUs and boots are quickly wishing you had, as the mud seeps into your shoes. The crashed "plane" isn't hard to find, it has cut a long gash about six feet wide into the landscape, having fallen south-west by the looks of it. Despite the rest of the field being a quagmire, the heat from the crash seems to have cooked the dirt so hard that it has not become mud, although the trench has about three inches of dirty water collected in it. As you follow the long scar, it gets deeper until you finally reach what you are looking for.

Standing at the edge, you see that there's a small fire burning inside what is now a ten foot deep trench. The fire is quickly going out as rain collects on top of what is quite obviously not a military aircraft. It doesn't seem quite large enough for interstellar travel, or even interplanetary travel, but neither of those things seem plausible to humans either, so who knows? What you see starts out as a round stub in the front, curving back into two sharp back edges, which curve back in on the other side meeting in the center of the craft. It is a dark metallic color, and the flames don't seem to have damaged it. So far as you can tell, there is no conventional propulsion mechanism, (ie. no propellers nor any jet turbines) or really, any way in. There is a large bulge in the top of it, once again running down the center, reminiscent of the cockpit of a jet, however, there is no way to see through it, nor does there seem to be any way to open it. A quick search around reveals the only interesting find, something seems to have passed further eastwards through the bushes as there is a section about three feet wide that has been flattened completely, though there are no tracks in the mud leading into it.

"Well, that explains why they sent us here." says Max as he catches a glimpse of the unknown craft.

Max thinks to himself: And it might just explain those missing people Alex told us about. Jesus, aliens. Just how deep is this rabbit hole I chose to jump into anyways? Deciding he might not want to know the answer to the last question, he turns to the matter at hand and addresses the group.

"It seems awfully small though. I wonder if it's a scout craft from something larger? Whoever or whatever was in it seems to have gone this way. Let's form a search line and see if we can find it."

Max marks the location of the craft on his Garmin GPS and takes a rough bearing towards the flattened bushes for future reference.

The craft is buried nose-first into the hard baked dirt around it, although the tip doesn't seem to have taken any damage whatsoever from the impact. The surface is smooth, almost like glass, but it feels... off, unlike anything you've ever felt before, it's hard like metal, however it doesn't feel either cold nor hot. As soon as your hands touch the craft it lights up. A bright green strip runs from tip to tip, illuminating the dark trench. Suddenly, the edges of the bulge light too, giving a bright green outline on top of the craft. Although it glows brightly, you cannot tell why, so far as you can tell, it seems to have undergone no change (other than the glow of course). You see a small spot that has recessed inside now, it is slightly larger than your hand, and in an odd shape, almost like a crescent moon with a spike coming from the inside of the crescent.

Max, looking into the bushes, you see the dark expanse of the field before you, however, as soon as you decide to go search, Alex and Matt both jump down into the trench to investigate the craft further. You see exactly what they see, although you haven't felt the craft's surface.

Matthew jerks his hand off the craft as it lights up, stepping back. "I REALLY hope that those lights don't mean its gonna blow up or something. Cause that would just suck" seeing that his fears were (thankfully) not correct, he steps back up to the strange vehicle, looking at the odd indent. "well, it worked once..." he mutters, as he reaches his hand towards the spike, and fiddles with it (grabs it, sees if it wiggles, etc)

Dorizzit
2007-10-28, 08:13 PM
Alex thinks for a few seconds. "Assuming what you're doing doesn't work, this is probably some form of advanced keyhole, which would indicate that the owner of this craft is not currently here. This whole thing seems odd. And whatever that craft is made of..." He shivers. "That just felt wrong."

Elektro
2007-10-28, 08:50 PM
Upon hearing the commotion, Max turns back to take a look at the ship. After analyzing the situation for a few seconds, he turns to Alex and Matthew.

"I think your idea about that being a keyhole is probably right. Hell, it might even be a place for whatever came in that thing to put its hand into. That would make as much sense as anything else we've seen today."

I don't think we're going to get that open though. If we can't, we'd better scout the area and see if we can find this thing's owner."

While Alex and Matthew examine the craft and look for a way to "open" it, Max checks the topo map on his GPS to see if there are any landmarks in the direction of the flattened bushes. As he does so, he pauses for a second. He then reaches into his overcoat and pulls out a silver 1911. Max quickly checks the mechanism and makes sure a round is chambered, then places it back under his coat. He chuckles, and says "Better safe than sorry."

The indentation feels no different than any other part of the craft that you felt, and the spike does nothing as you play with it. As soon as you let go however, it begins to glow red, in the exact same way as the craft glowed green earlier.

As for any landforms, there is a large hill to the south east of the crash-site, about a half-mile, and a bit further east, there is a small forest site labeled "Blackroot Park" on your GPS.

The rain has fallen fast and thick for hours now, and there are very few, fi any tracks to follow. You can't seem to tell where they are going besides the fact that, in general, they seem to be going in an eastward direction. After you have followed them for about six yards, they disappear altogether, leaving you standing in the mud, about halfway between the crash-site and Blackroot. A bit further south, there is the large hill that Max found on his GPS. From here you can see that there are two or three small buildings on top; Max, you didn't see these on your GPS. Also, looking at the pictures that you took with your camera, you see that the ship hasn't appeared well in them. They are all extremely blurry where the ship is. There are windows, however most are broken, and it is too dark to see inside from where you are. There is a single door, and the odd tracks lead straight to it. The next building is a tower, that seems to have been taller at one time. At the moment it stands about four or five stories, with a skeletal sixth on top. You kick in the door to the building, it seems to be rather old, as it gives in easily. The room inside seems as though it has been used recently however. There is no dust or dirt covering the floor. The room seems to be about half the lower floor of the building, and goes straight to the back wall. There is a door on your right, in the center of the wall, this is closed. The floor is solid wood, and it has been scratched badly over the years, it is now faded and worn. The windows on the sides let in no light, as they have been boarded up. The boards look as old as the door. There is a light hanging from the ceiling, however there is no pull switch hanging from it, nor can you see any light switches nearby. Looking down the stair case, you see a dirt floor about ten, fifteen feet down. It seems to widen out, but from the top of the stair case you can't tell for sure. The stair case itself is made of old dark wood. There are no guard-rails, and the walls are all dirt past the floor level.

Max, standing by the door, you hear a sort of heavy breathing coming from the other side.

But in all seriousness. The door opens slowly with a slight creak. The breathing intensifies as you open it. On the other side you see... sombody sitting in a chair. He looks to be a teenager. His hands and feet are bound to the chair, and he has a gag in his mouth. The heavy breathing seems to be coming from him, although it slows a bit once he ees you clearly. Err... I dunno how long I've been here, I think it was the 24th when I was taken. This was about a week ago. My girlfriend and I drove out to black wood at about I dunno... six. All of the sudden, there are like four or five guys wearin this crazy looking black armor. It was all glossy, and it looked kinda mettalic, but odd sorta. They were carrying something like guns that were made outta the same stuff, but the guns didn't look like normal guns, I dont really know how to describe em. So one of them walks over, and he was talkin about me being "unpure" and how we were "traitors to our kind." So then he touches me, and the hand just feels weird, then alluva sudden, my entire body freezes up, and I cant move, and it hurts like hell, suddenly it all goes black, then I'm sittin here. They've come in every once and a while to give me some food, but other than that, I haven't seen anyone. On top of that, they'll never say anything when they come in. Thanks for taking the ropes off.

Outside the rain continues to fall, but all of the sudden, in the second house (the one they didn't go in) a light comes on. The light seems to be a light red, and it seems to be really bright. The corridor ahead of you is made of dirt with wooden support beams about every ten feet, and the ground steadily slopes downwards. The only light comes from your flashlight, and the rest is inky black. The closeness of the corridor makes you feel claustrophobic. Your breathing begins to sound loud, as there is no noise, even the rain outside has been cut off now. There is a sound ahead of you, as you move forwards to investigate, the ground gives out and you realize that the sound was that of cracking wood. Kain, you fall as the ground in front of you gives out. Luckily it's only about a twenty foot drop, you land on the bottom barely hurt [OOC: You take four damage from the fall], Matt, you see Kain fall, and can see him land, his flashlight goes out, but yo can both see that he is now on solid stone ground, you cannot see any walls from where the flashlight can reach, but you can tell that his is busted. Kain, your glock landed about five feet away, and is within reach. Your leg hurts badly, but you can still walk. Matt, across the hole in the corridor (which is about fifteen feet) you can see a wooden door. If you've calculated correctly, you are somewhere near the other house now.

Kurt, there is only one door to the building, the one you guys originally saw. There are four walls, and each has a boarded up window. The roof seems to be made of wooden shingling. So far as you can see there are no hostiles outside the building, you cannot see inside.

Kain, as you're fumbling in the darkness you come to a ledge, you cannot tell how far down it goes, but following it you reach a wall about fifteen feet from where you originally fell. The alein raises its rifle towards Max and squeezes the trigger, you hear another quick rushing sound, and then you feel a flash of pain in your arm. You take 4 points of damage. The winchster fires off again, this time catching the alien in the face, he slumps to his knees then falls on the ground. A pool of blood surrounds his body, then you smell acrid smoke, and there's nothing left but his gun and armor and dried black goo.

Well, let's grab this stuff and police the rest of the area. Grab that thing in the other alien's chest; maybe we can use it to open the craft. The gun is far lighter than a normal rifle, and feels like it is made of the same material as the ship, although you can't be sure. The design is similar to that of an assault rifle, but it is more fluid, and the tip of the barrel ends in a bulb. Looking more closely you see that there's a magazin that feeds into the top of the gun.

Kurt, the bullets are all gone, although there are several small pellets, most likely from the shotgun blasts.

Max, there's a door that leads to a stair case on the wall opposite where the alien stood. Following the rickety stairs down you come to a wooden door, and just as you suspected, it opens to the other side of the hole in the floor.

Well... The alien goes into an explanation about faster than light travel, something involving making short range work-holes, that effectively slingshot you from one place to another, and at each area bounce randomly in the general direction of where you want to go, eventually depositing you in the right place. Anyone with knowledge of the internet immediately grasps the concept, those without such knowledge find it difficult to understand. The actual device is much more complex, and the exact nature of it eludes you especially since most of their scientific terms are far different from your own.

The first two you know of. A third is a human sub-species, they are slightly more well built than Earth's humans, however they lack the intelligence that you posses. I believe that you would call them "cave men." How they arrived on the other planet is a mystery to us, however alien sightings on your planet may explain it partially.

Another race that has achieved faster-than-light travel, in a different means than our own, are known by themselves as the Granth. They are smaller than humans, however they are extremely intelligent. Their heads are rather bulbous, and they have dark grey skin. They have frequently visited your planet, and I believe that many of your world's ideas about aliens come from this species.

The other species I know little of, the little information that our government has on them is highly restricted. I can tell you however that two of them exist within your solar system, and a third exists on your planet.

The last race is a highly aggressive barbaric race that has attacked any and all of our scouts that have run into them. The good news is that they lack faster than light travel and are stuck on their home world.

Army radar picked up a low flying Unidentified flying object. We contacted the Air Force, and they informed us that they picked it up too. Nobody knew where it came from. We have orders to find the UFO and secure it. Now then, if you don't mind telling us why you're really here?

Max will work to stall the grunts until either the backup team gets their or he can get a stand down order from the unit commander.

Just to make sure that you know, you have no real military jurisdiction. That being said, how do you plan on reaching their commanding officer?

OOC: I don't I don't have any real military jurisdiction, but I have the uniform and paperwork to make me look like I do. I can contact the commanding officer via their radio or worst case by a cell phone. I'd assume if a UFO crashed their CO would want to keep tabs on what they found.

However, my superior officer is on his way here as we speak, and you may take the matter up with him when he gets here." Matthew glances at his watch, "Which should be any minute now. I'm sorry about the SNAFU, hopefully we can get it settled when the higher-ups get here. Unfortunately, part of the restricted area is those houses in front of us, but please feel free to make yourselves comfortable here for a few minutes."

Kain

Up until now, Kain just stood there, behaving like a good grunt should. However, when Matt mentions that the brass should be arriving any second now, he gets the idea. He turn to Max.

"Lieutenant, with your permission I'd like to start towards our officiers. It'll be easier for them to find us if somebody shows them where we are."

I assume Max will give Kain permission. Once he gets it, Kain will move away just enought to be out of line of sight of others and then hide to look if there are any other soldiers near. He will also try to locate their COs and explain situation to them so they'll know as much as possible before getting to the scene. He will also notify Kurt of his actions, when he is far away enought so the others won't hear him.

Alright, you get back to the road when you see another SUV roll up. The men that jump out are from the other SCARS team. They are all wearing tactical assault gear and have assault rifles. One of them, a man you know as Ryan, walks up and asks where the others are.

Back on the hill,
Well then sir, we'll need to wait for your commanding officer to arrive. May I see your military IDs please?

Ryan produces a fake set of orders from under his jacket and hands them to the Lieutenant. He reads them over and then says aloud, So your commanding officer is in the town ten miles out of here? Well, our CO will want to talk to him... We'll be back when we get the clearance.

After they have driven off Ryan looks at you, Hopefully they won't be back until after we've finished with cleanup. Now then, Jack told me that he wants you to go into town and investigate the kids parents. Where are the kid and the aliens?

Ryan follows you up the hill speaking as he goes, So there are actually aliens? I'm surprised. Your group's first mission and you get contact, we went off on about seven or eight wild goose hunts so far and nothing. He seems a bit jealous. Anyways, the paramilitary team should be here within the day to blockade the town, however we need you to find the parents beforethat happens, understood? Good then... He stops dead in his tracks once he sees the alien. Amazing...

Kurt stands and steps out from his hiding place (no doubt surprising the aliens), changing the clip in his rifle while walking casually over to where he left his suitcase.

"Give me a moment to get ready. Be seeing you around, aliens who will not give themselves a name." he says, almost casually, as he disassembles his weapon and packs it away into the suitcase, and gathers up his ghillie tarp into the bag again. As he rejoins the group, he motions towards the aliens.

"And we can hardly keep calling them aliens. Let's go ask them how they pronounce their names. We can learn."

As I have said, we have no names, it is not that it would not be possible for you to speak them, it is that our language is different from yours. A single sentence is expressed through a certain sound much the same way as a single character in your worlds japanese is a full word rather than your English's individual letters.

He turns to Ryan, It is good to meet you. I assume you will be our liaison to your government? Good.
He turns back to you, Now as for the childs parents, I am afraid I can be of little help. I know little more than you. I will tell you what I do know however. A space crew arrived on your planet nearly one hundred years ago, and five of ours were lost. The flight returned. Our rivals then sent a space crew more recently, and discovered the child's origins three months before. I believe that there may be more of the half-breeds in the community. We learnt only one Earth-day ago that they existed when we engaged our enemies in a brief fire-fight and interrogated the survivors.
