Lizzybeth watches as a large merchant vessel slowly comes to dock at the largest of the docks. The city would be enriched in a few day's time with more exotic goods, people and problems. You turn back towards your grandmother's house to leave the newcomers to their own devices, but something nags at your mind. It won't take long to watch the people disembark and hey you may see something interesting. You turn on your heel and start marching to the main docks.

http://www.relishthethought.com/Eds/ozavatar4.jpg
Oswald finds himself at the bow of a massive ship that just passed a massive island disconnected from the mainland of Chult. The jungle seems to choke the island in spots, but pushing out of the jungle and into the sea; lay the jewel of the south, Chult. As you look over the sprawling city your thoughts turned to your dreams from last night. You stand inside a ruin surrounded by thick jungle. The ruins stretch on for thousands of feet in every direction, something happened here but just as your about to put your finger on it.

The dreamscape changes into a nightmarish hellscape of chanting, faceless figures surrounding a massive crocodile with tentacles thrashing and withering from its mouth. You watch as a young girl, halfling perhaps, is cut down and her blood dripped atop the crocodile's body. The body is slowly fed to the hungry beast and the chanting group begins to sway and turn to you.

The creature moves on you and you feel overwhelming fear as terrible voices enter your mind, "It sees all, we know all." The creature's tentacles wrap around your neck and darkness takes over before you shake violently awake. The same dream for the last three nights.

Scoot scratches at his scales for like the hundredth time; this sea air is worse than any desert as it seems sand magically appears in and under your scales. This place is surely a cursed land being all the way out here in the middle of this blasted ocean. You come up to your bunkmate, Oswald, on the ship's bow as the ship begins to maneuver into the bay.

Once the ship gets close enough ropes are thrown and a plank is dropped down to the docks below. A million things start happening at once as men, animals, and creatures of all kinds swarm on and off the decks. The captain a gaunt-looking man with a missing hand points with a hook towards a plank being lowered, "Get off my boat, you've been nothing but bad luck since we've taken you on."

https://i.imgur.com/ZYj7dBi.png
Keem-Shah Shell-Face stretches and shifts in its hammock strung up with about 10 other hammocks. The people here had asked you to feed the dinosaurs and make sure they aren't looking ill or malnourished. You make your way outside into a tropical hot sun. The dinosaurs huff at you as they move towards the feeding trough.

You watch the dinos as they eat, one of the massive beasts fixes an eye on you as it chews at the vegetable mixture. You think about freeing it, but Shoku appears behind you.

Tashiro Shoku listens to the council as they go back and forth about the logistics of pushing into the interior on some fools errand. Shima suddenly stands to speak. "We have toiled here long enough. I've heard rumors of a great treasure waiting to be taken just inside the jungle. I've told you where it is and yet we argue about the lives of a few verses the lives of our people?" He had the votes among the council you already knew.

You stand and walk out to think about Shima's plan. It sounds far-fetched, but word of Mbala's sudden death of all its inhabitants had already reached the city. The messenger had simply run back to Nyanzaru. But now Shima was claiming he had questioned the man himself and was claiming this outlandish story of a hag and hidden treasure. It made no sense.

As you thought these things you found yourself seeking out the curious lizardfolk your people had befriended.

One Hour Later:

http://www.relishthethought.com/Eds/ozavatar4.jpg
Oswald & Scoot Oswald looks upset at the way his bunkmate was being disrespected. Though why bother with such a lowly captain of a merchant vessel who can't even sail around a storm. You both disembark and make your way up the stairs and ramps leading up to the city. Oswald you are really starting to enjoy this place and its sights when you feel with dread. You see a Halfling looking over the merchant's vessel as it is unloaded of crew and goods. You know her face all too well. She turns to see you staring at her.

Lizzybeth moves forward to the man staring at her, "Welcome to Port Nyanzaru" you say in greeting. You look at Scoot and smile, before suddenly looking up at the sun to check the time. You were supposed to be at the Thundering Lizard to meet with Shoku and Keem. You look them over and a thought crossing your mind, "Are you two looking for adventure or maybe a drink?"

https://i.imgur.com/ZYj7dBi.png
Shoku & Keem walk towards the Red Bazaar of Port Nyanzaru. Shoku you've decided to take the initiative and make a party of your own before Shima has the opportunity to set any more terms for your people. You had sent a message earlier to a good friend and able-bodied young halfling to meet and discuss a possible business venture. She should know where to find someone able to help us.

Keem you're the first to the Thundering Lizard. You open the door to let Shoku enter before moving in to let it close. By chance, you look back to catch the sight of Lizzybeth running with two people behind her in pursuit.

OOC:

Everyone would make their ways inside and we can open there.

Shoku's people would provide an unfinished map of the areas they know about. Your scouts have found Mbala at Shima's orders.

Here it is (https://drive.google.com/file/d/12eFc0biU1JwhIeVfEL38aRU6mEFS6yTm/view?usp=sharing)

If you aren't following we can discuss it in OOC.

I know I controlled your characters a lot just now, but instead of starting spread all over the city, I wanted to give you guys a sort of weak reason you're together.

If we need to edit anything let me know.

Oz followed behind the halfling as she lead them towards the bar. He continued to shoot nervous looks towards Scoot all the way, in a vain attempt to draw attention to their new acquaintance. He had told his new Kobold friend of the bad dream after the second night, but neither knew how to deal with such an event. Was it nerves, or prophecy? At the time he wasn't sure, but now there was no doubt. Lathander had lead him here for a reason.

"Erm... So, miss... erm... Lizbeth was it? Where exactly are we going?" he asked tentatively.

Shellface enters the tavern behind Shoku. The half-elf was better at defusing situations, and Keem could gauge the situation and warn the Kozakuran before things got too ugly. The afternoon in the warm sun was enjoyable, the lizard was not sure why this room full of drunk people was preferrable to a sunbath. He could smell a mixture of natural brews, liquor, puke and burning tobacco in the air. All this did not please him. He could not smell an attacking deinonychus even if it defecated on his head.

Still, the lizardman went through all that because he needed help. These cityfolk were incredibly difficult to deal with social wise, and only Shoku even talked to him. Your elder council spoke of hags. If anything, I would doubt the existence of the gold, not dangerous creatures of the jungle. Keem put eloquently. They were no average savage, but educated and almost scholarly. Keem said they were a special breed, and normally thinking was not their god's teachings for it impeded instinctual reactions.

But if gold would improve your people's standings, it is quite welcome, I assume. That small halfling out there, is this a male or not? I can never tell. The lanky lizardman walked over to Lizzybeth, almost crawling over the pub's floor.

The other ones...is that a kobold? Keem's interest was suddenly peeked. He checked for a decent place to watch them, hidden from a good vantage point.

Either name is sufficient. I assume people call him Shellface or Keem. Keem would be his male name, Shah is her female name. Shellface would just be a moniker, some name that would feel mocking for anyone other than the stoic lizardfolk that understands that his head is white like egg shell.

"Lizzybeth, that's right! We're going to the best place for new folks in town, it's a fun little place called the Thundering Lizard!" Looking at Scoots, she added, "I didn't choose it because you're a lizard, by any means, it's just a welcoming atmosphere and a great way to get acquainted with our beautiful city. What brings you both here? You must have come a long way!"

Leading Scoots & Oz through busy thoroughfares and crowded avenues, Lizzy alternate between forging forwards and turning to talk to her companions, listening eagerly to what they have to say. Her fast pace was hard to keep up with, but when her new friends fell behind or got pushed aside by the crowd, she was quick to find them again and lead the way to the Thundering Lizard.
When they arrived, she quickly found an open table and encouraged them to sit, saying "Wait right here, the bartender is a good friend of mine and we'll be sure to get a delicious meal while we're here!" Having said so, she darted out of sight with the same energy that she had used the whole way over.

Scoots hadn't cared for the journey over. Humans and those like them smelled odd when in close quarters, particularly in the heat or after working. And he was still working salt out of his scales the whole walk. Being bunked with the servant of a Lathander was almost laughable; he wondered if the ship's captain had done it out of ignorance or if he though he was clever putting a kobold with a sun priest. Still Oz was an agreeable sort, for a mammal. He'd certainly been kinder than the crew. The kobold grinned at the thought of the foul, rotting fish he'd left in the captain's cabin before departing.

Scoots noticed his human companion's glances and shrugged. It was hard to be particularly trusting of deific insights when your own racial deity was trapped eternally in his own collapsed lair. Not that Scoots was unwilling to give the gods their due (as he was quick to remind Oz whenever he was dismissive of the cleric's piety), he simply didn't give them much heed outside their impact on his own life. Even if Lathander spoke to the man, it wasn't of interest to a thirsty kobold. Somewhere with that sweet alcohol we had at the last port, I hope. Rum, I think it was called. his voice was low and raspy, though some of that was from the salt air.

He holds up a hand at Lizzybeth's assurance and question Pay it no mind. I can already see this land enjoys its share of reptiles he gestures to the dinosaurs being lead through the streets It has been a long trip. I can't even remember where we boarded, though to be fair I rarely get the names of towns I plan to leave quickly.

Shoku's thoughts were still racing with Kimoto-san's proposal, he was concerned in that this expedition would bring a measure of renown to the Kozakuran Quarter.
However, such an increase of status would benefit Kimoto Shima's business and continued interaction with men of low honor, pirates, brigands and worse. He did not wish the Quarter represented by men such as Kimoto Shima and his men, and would rather the quarter be represented by the silk farmer's rice grower's and craftsmen who had begun to become profitiable. Shoku's disdain for Kimoto-san and his family was well known, however, should Toshiro be able to claim the renown by securing the nearby outpost of Mbala and discovering the nature of the ills that had befallen them, he would be able to wrest influence from Shima and contest his position within the Quarter's council of peers.

Even as he considered the implications of the expedition, he travelled through the Bazaar towards the Thundering Lizard. He did not enjoy the tavernhouse, it was of low character, as were many of it's patrons. However, as a place of business and negotiation it was suitable, Shima's reach did not extend into the Red Bazaar, so Shoku did not need to concern himself with his rival's retainers. As the lizardfolk held the door for him, Shoku entered with the briefest nod of thanks, Keem-Shah was a strange creature, however it was loyal, and respectful. It's knowledge of the peninsula was of significant advantage, especially considering the planned expedition that would require the group to travel the banks of the River Shoshenstar. He turned towards his companion, after ordering a plate of fish for Keem-Shah, and a herbal tea for himself. Once securing the table he responded to the lizard folk's question, "While the discovery of trade goods of value would benefit the quarter, there will be significant renown earned by those who journeyed the river to investiagate the fate of Mbala. That renown will aid the quarter, and prevent the council from falling, wholly, into the hands of Kimoto-san." He paused, lifting his tea cup to his forehead, bowed towards the east, his home, set the cup down, inhaled it's scent, allowing the steam to bath his sharp cheekbones. "Elizabeth-san, is her father's daughter, though the man is unknown to me. She is a scholar, with some connections throughout the Port, and should we convince her of the worth of our endeavor I am sure that we can recruit her to our cause."

As his companion mentioned the kobold, he turned his head, his brow furrowing, "A --- what?" He noted the korobokuru, a smal, twisted creature, scaled, with a reptillian snout. Scavengers and corpse-eaters ... however, he had never seen one outside of Kozakura, so he tried to temper his impressions. He did note it travelled with the young child, Elizabeth-san, he nodded subtly, inviting them over by his body language and slight acknowledgement of their presence. He found it odd that the young woman travelled with the scavenger and another who was, also, unkown to him.

Oz was busy trying to get the waitresses attention when Scoots began pulling on his robes. His eyes followed the Kobolds finger to see a strange pair. He had only met a few lizardfolk in his time, so could not comment on whether this one's white head was an oddity, but the half elf immediately stood out. The sharp angular features were so different from any other travellers he had met.

He smiled at the Kobold, still unsure as to how you interpret the small creatures facial expressions, but assuming it was curiosity he said "Well either way, let's at least go make their acquaintance." and without waiting for a reply, headed over.

"Greetings my good... Sirs? My name is Oswald and this is my companion, Scoots. Are you by chance the friends of miss Lizzybeth's that she spoke to us about?"

Keem's eyes narrowed as they circled the newcomer sniffing in the air. He smelled of salty air, of sweating men and being at least surrounded by poor hygiene. Greetings, sailor. Our name is Keem-Shah, and his name is Tashiro. Tashiro is a male, while we Keem points at themselves and their white skull are both. I assume Lizzy is the halfman?. Keeping his distance, as if the other party laid an ambush he adds in Draconic:

Ahkrin Faal Dovah Nust Hon Grind Jul Krin. Kendov o Motmahus Kriik? Mir Ov? Osos Ov. Taazokaan Tahrodiis Dur. Jul Tahrodiis Ahkrin e Zohungaar Nivahriin. Zu'u Keem-Shah, Aar Semuanya Laas Pah.* The language has an abrupt and rhythmic quality, and its grammar is as simple as all Draconic. In an odd twist, you can hear Keem try to instill something like a proper sentence structure.

You are a courageous one for travelling with humans, fellow born of the dragon. Are you a warrior or a hunter? Who are you serving? This one is trustworthy. These lands are treacherous and cursed. The humans are fickle; some are heroes, some are cowards. I am Keem-Shah, shackled to (meaning a servant or slave of) Semuanya's will, as is all life.

Keem did not educate his friend in Draconic, but he told him a few words so he knows when lizardfolk are talking about them, or humanity. Jul means humanity as a term for all non-lizardfolk humanoids. Semuanya is Keem's deity of life. Aar means slave or servant, which is all the same to lizardfolk.

Shellface sniffs on the kobold's scales. Oh, and you get rid of the salt by diving in the river delta. But stay clear of the flesh crocodiles. he adds. Let us sit over there. the lizard beckons the group. He takes a chair facing the room, with considerable distance to the table, to be able to jump up and fight or flee at an instant.

Bejik Earenk is the name I was born to, but Scoots was given me by my fellows in arms. It's good to meet you. He holds out a hand to Shoku, knowing that as a lizardfolk Keem will care nothing for the gesture of a handshake. He does respond in kind, however.

Oz is a good sort, I think.
A healer and unlike many of his kind, he does not treat me poorly for my scales. I am a warrior, a scout. I've served none for many days. Thank you for the advice, the humans here seem even stranger than around my home land. I know of your Semuanya from an old ally, who spoke sometimes of your gods. Meeting another survivor on this journey is a hopeful sign.

I'll get this salt out first thing once I've had a drink and we've talked. Thanks.

Are you using a specific online translator for Draconic? BTW, you would know that Bejik Earenk literally means "savior of tomorrow" in Draconic (at least according to the Forgotten Realms wiki), so his tribe clearly expects/expected a lot out of him

Keem's head turns to get a better view of the kobold, then nods approvingly. The scale issues, the use of draconic was appropriate. This really was a kobold and not some weird trick. What brings an underground dweller such as you to these lands? And can this Lizbeth be trusted? She does not have the air of a warrior nor a scout on her. Even her scent is peculiar.

After a short pause, he adresses Oz. What brings a healer to these lands? Will you tend to the dying lands? With the last word, you heard the first kind of concern or emotion in his voice, for everything previously was either guttural and harsh or studied and deliberately uncaring for fear of implying something with intonation.

Zu'u los ni kod wah daar tinvaak. Nii pogaas zii voot zaan.

I am not used to this language. It carries too much meaning with its intonation.

Translated word by word from the Elder Scrolls wiki. That thing (https://www.thuum.org/translator.php) is marginally better however. I assume grammar is implied by position of words (thus ignoring auxiliary words), which gives the Draconic some sort of guttural feel as I am basically just adding nouns and unconjugated verbs after each other.

Keem's first sentences literally meant: Bravery! The Dragon[kin] is courageous to serve, to meet [with] human.

Personally I would like to know if Scoots uses "Yipyak" or a more formal Draconic (implying the presence and importance of a dragon or dragonborn), a particularly annoying version of Draconic, spoken in a (particularly annoying) yipping accent.

Shoku shook his head as his companion spoke for him, while it would not be tolerated in the Imperial Courts, the creature was making an attempt at etiquette as it had been explained to them. Shoku stood up, and ridigly bowed, slightly, from the waist, his hands at his side. "Oswald-san, please forgive my companion, they mis-spoke. The customs of my people are unfamiliar to them, I am Tashiro Shoku," he stressed the Shoku as he spoke in heavily accented Taldan. "As is tradition in the Kozakuran isles, Tashiro is my family name, as each man is a product of his forebears and responsile for bringing honor first, to one's family, Shoku, is my given name, chosen after passing my gempukku." With a sweep of his arm, he indicated the table. "Please join me as we take tea, you must be weary after your travels."

He looked to the young woman who accompanied the both the taller man, and the korobokuru. "Elizabeth-ko, as discussed, there is a proposal we must discuss which you may find beneficial to your continued studies of the Penninsula and it's mysteries." Then finally, he looked down to smaller kobold rogue, "Bejik Earnek, as previously stated, I am Toshiro Shoku," he bowed, the barest inclination of his head, "You, too, are welcome to join my table."

Lizzy squirmed her way through the crowded bar, over to the table where her new acquaintances and one friend were sitting. Hearing the rhythmic murmurs of a language she wasn't familiar with, she paused for a second, trying to hear the sounds that were being said... but whoever had been speaking was silent. She pressed forward, just in time to hear Shoku apologizing for his companion, who she didn't recognize.

Circling the table to stand next to him, she exclaimed, "Shoku, it's good to see you!" Her arms reached up and out as if expecting a hug, but she thought better of it and brought her hands full circle back to her chest, clasping them together and entering a deep bow in an attempt to honor his customs of greeting.

Turning to the table, she said "The bartender will be over in just a minute, he's a great guy and he'll make you feel right at home!"

Upon the mention of a chance to solve some mysteries, her ears perked up. Standing on one of the benches in order to reach over the table, she replied, "I'm always interested in finding answers! Is your new friend here to help us?" she asked, gesturing at Keem-Shah. "Nice to meet you by the way, my name is Lizzybeth! How did you and Shoku meet?"

Not sure if Shoku considers Lizzy a friend, but she considers him one :p She also sees everyone who talks to her more than once as a friend.

Lizzybeth makes her way to the bartender who is currently being swamped for more ale. He finally hefts up a keg already tapped and turns it to the thirsty crowd. He finally sees Lizzybeth and yells above the crowd, "Lizzy! Welcome! Tell your friends I will greet them when I can." He gestures to the crazy crowd, "Old Bertha won by a fluke today, Thirty-two to one!" Jabon whistles and a swamped Chultan girl snaps up, "Table five girl, Table five." Jabon smiles at Lizzy and nods before turning to scream at another drunk patron trying to grab a mug half full of mead from behind the bar. "Out! Get him out of here!" The man is pulled towards the door and tossed out onto street.

Everyone else watches as Lizzybeth makes her way back to them with a girl carrying drinks on her heels, "Everything is free tonight. Old Bertha won her final race." She says this as she sets out cups of mead and ale. "There is also Fig Wine, but only one glass per patron." She hands each of you a chip, "Present this and I'll get you your cup." Shoku and Lizzybeth would know this is the strongest liquor(moonshine) you can get in the city.

As the group settles in with their drinks there is ample time to talk about the plans involving Mbala and how best to trek through the jungle. The natives would know the interior in some way, but it is clear no one has a more complete picture of what awaits them inside the jungle besides Shellface.

You guys would know that the interior is swarmed with insects that will bite relentlessly, day or night. You can purchase a gourd with 20 applications of insect repellant, with each application lasting 12 hours for 1 Gold.

Shoku you can ask your people to provide this kind of thing for your group once you talk to them (if you talk to them about this). If you do approach the council Shima will learn of your plans.

Shellface knows that goblins like to encamp near and around Mbala so they may ambush traders moving through the jungle. They attack by stacking on top of each other and rushing their targets. These 'Battlestacks' are deadly due to each goblin attacking in unison.

Lizzy your studies have told you that the hags of Chult are not to be trusted. They often portray themselves as indispensable to people before betraying them.

Shoku you know that most people who die in the jungle do so by losing their way in the thick, dinosaur infested, poison plant-filled jungle. If you become lost in the jungle you will most likely die.

Scoots takes a deep drink from his cup and stretches Down to business it is, then. What manner of mission is this? He takes out playing cards and begins to shuffle them idly while glancing around the bar. While he had little doubt their adventures would take them into the jungle itself, it was nice to relax on dry, safe land for a while and see how other people lived.

Nust lost aus wah Dovah, Zu'u mindol, ahrk mal nust daar tinvaak lost aan hahdrim fah Dovah. Ful nust kod mey tinvaak Scoots' voice is notably pitched higher when he speaks Draconic

"Their have trouble with Draconic, I think, and few that could speak it have a mind for it. So they have to get along with something less precise."

Literally "They have suffering with Draconic, I think, and little they that speak Draconic have a mind for it. So they use fool speak."

Scoots speaks standard Draconic, with no trace of Yipyak with non-kobolds. Much like Oberyn Martell with the Spider, however, any fluent speaker of Draconic can tell he's deliberately not speaking his native dialect. I'm generally just gonna put Draconic in spoilers, it takes a fair amount of work to translate, particularly since the Dragon Tongue is incomplete.

Oz went to offer his hand to the Shoku, but quickly realised his mistake as the half-elf swept into a bow. He followed suit, though slightly more awkwardly as his chainmail refused to bend and his holy symbol clanked loudly as he straightened again. Despite years in the city, the effort people went to with formal greetings always seemed alien to him.

"My thanks Shoku and Keem. I am honoured to join you."

He sat down, leaning his staff casually against the table. "So Keem, what did you mean by healing the land? Is there trouble here? Is it by any chance related to my... how can I put it..? connection, to miss Lizzybeth here?"

The Dawnbringer gladly accepted the mead as it was offered and took a small sip while waiting for the Lizardfolks answer.

Still staying with water, the lizardfolk leans to Oz to make himself heard better. Our people is known as the Kekwalah. Our lives are short and brutal, the fittest survive, the others die and are eaten. Our eggs are laid in fertile soil. Rich nutrients make the hatchlings female, for plentiful offsprings and a new generation. Poor nutrients make the hatchlings male, to give the tribe a chance to conquer more area. Keem-Shah however, was born under a bad star, a vessel for two beings. I was meant to be a female, but the life force drained out of the soil, making me not male nor female, but an avatar of Semuanya. This is our god, it embraces the very essence of life. My coming, my face markings are the heralds of a new age.

She looks at Lizzybeth. Her goals are wealth and friends. I do not yearn for this kind of appreciation. and finally at Scoots.

Do not mind the elf. He feels himself and his culture superior, looking prideful at a few centuries of his tribe being influential. Just humor him for now.

After thinking about Shoku's behaviour and the land's curse a bit, Keem actually takes a swig of mead to clear their head.

As the rest of the party starts to discuss Keem-Shah's and Shoku's proposal/mission, Lizzybeth grabs a tankard of ale and swiftly drains half of it. Pulling it away, she wipes some foam away from her lips, and listens intently to both the exchanges in Draconic and Keem-Shah's description of the curse afflicting their lands.

As Keem-Shah begins speaking about the Kekwalah, she holds her hand over a candle, gathering a bit of soot; at the same time, she scrapes up a pinch of salt that wasn't quite cleaned away from the last meal. Muttering a halfling incantation to herself, she murmurs, "Laeg la ohr caet; fleag la son claet." Rubbing the soot onto one earlobe, and the salt onto the other, she gains an insight into the Draconic banter being spoken before her.

When he mentions her goals of wealth and friends, she gives a grin that is halfway between an innocent smile and smirk, and with a flick of her wrist, a small bag of coins appears in her hand. With a wink at the lizardfolk, she twists her wrist again and the bag disappears. Despite her cheeky response, she is in awe of the fact that she is in the presence of someone who is the avatar of a deity; even in Port Nyanzaru, that's not something she sees every day.

She continues to listen in the meantime, waiting for the bigger picture of Shoku's proposal and Keem-shah's quest to paint itself.

Let their words ring true in my ear; make the sound that reaches me clear.

Lizzy casted Comprehend Languages on herself, which lasts for an hour. She's trying to do it stealthily; she rolls [roll0] for Sleight-of-hand. She used Prestidigitation for the trick with the coins as well. She's a little hurt by Keem-Shah's dismissal of her interests, but tries to hide it; she rolls [roll1] for Deception.

Oh, so you are a seer then. Impressive. Excuse my directness, but I do not understand why you are hurt. Enjoying a good life is a good goal to strife for. The best food, the healthiest men to impregnate your kids. Just know all of this is naught in the presence of a powerful enemy. Goblin tribes are harrassing the human settlements. Witch doctors are cursing the people. Everyone that lives near their undead slaves is drained of life. If they die and come back via magic, they slowly deteriorate.

Before setting out you should buy some insect repellant. My scales make it safer for me to not be harassed as easily, but you do not want to travel the jungles with poisonous animals, mad goblin pygmies and dangerous reptiles covered in a diseased cloud of flies.

As Keem finishes the story, Oz scratches his stubble in contemplation. He had vague recollection of various times in the past that lands had become infertile. It had been in a book at the church, but most of that was related to agriculture which was the domain of his mother deity, Chauntea, not Lathander.

Instead of replying straight away, he turned to the halfling beside him. "Miss Lizzybeth. What is your relationship to all this? And have you had any... odd dreams? Because I have seen your face before today, but only in vague visions that I now believe to be some sort of prophetic vision."

Shoku nodded, subtly, as his companions spoke, listening to their foreign language, studying their faces, inflections, and intonations as he did so. It did not escape his notice that Keem-shah and the korobokuru spoke in some harsher, gutteral language he did not understand, as though they wished to keep their discussion private, this sparked a sharp rise in his dark brow as he watched quizzically.

Then the young woman approached him enthusistically, her exuberence and openness making Shoku feel slightly uncomfortable, however, having learned of his culture's respect for personal space, she kept her distance and performed an adequate bow for a foreigner. This brought a small smile to his lips, "Elizabeth-ko, it is this one's pleasure to greet you on this day." The korkbukuru produced a small deck of cards and began shuffling them deftly, he had seen the sailors playing such games, often accompanied by the clink of mettalic coins, a gambling game them, not dissimilar from Mahjong then, a pursuit that Shoku avoided, a low-skill, disreputable.

The taller human, Oswald, made an attempt at a bow, armored as he was, the attempt was appreciated, even though Shoku saw it was a formality he was unaccustomed too. However, the prominence of the medallion he wore, spoke of some scholarly, or religious studies in his youth. Interesting. Shoku returned his bow, "Oswald-san," he spoke by way of greeting.

He sat back down, sipped his steaming tea, which had a subtle earthen aroma, from his sash he produced two small lacquored sticks and deftly began picking at the steamed fish and rice he had ordered. "You will of course, pardon me if I, too, take my meal while we discuss the venture for which Elizabeth-ko has brought you to this establishment."

"As our young scholar," the inclination of his head indicated Elizabeth, "is aware, the Kozakuran presence within the Port of Nyanzura is only recent. A merchant fleet met with disaster and those who did not drown were brought ashore by a fleet sent to the shoals by the Merchant Princes. We have established a small quarter within the walls, with which Keem-shah is familiar with." Another sip of tea, "My family name holds some measure of respect within the quarter, though I remain seperated from my family, my clan and my Emporer by a vast ocean. A council of peers holds governance over the Kurakozan Quarter, and it has come to our esteemed Councilman's attention that an outpost that rests along the shores of the River Shoshenstar, named Mbala, has fallen silent, it's population either perished or missing." He looked around the table, searching the eyes of those assembled, "Should, we, be ale to provide the Council with the truth of the situation, they can then deliver such intelligence to the Merchant Prince's, and by that act, elevate the status and import of the Kozakuran people. However, we are an isolated people, having only, within the past year, established ourselves within the city, so those who would join me can only be offered by thanks and my indebtedness. While I do not guarantee wealth will be discovered during our venture, there are some among the council, who believe solving the mystery of Mbala's fate will reveal fortunes enough to secure one's comfort during their time within the Penninsula. Also, should you require housing within Nyanzura, I can persuade Nakahiri-san to provide you room and board for the duration of your stay."

Hearing Keem-Shah's explanation, Lizzybeth is mollified and a little embarrassed at her knee-jerk reaction to his words.

Surrounded by a family who's only focus was the daily task of sailing, casting nets, selling fish, and maintaining boats had never been enough for Lizzy's ambitions; even as her grandmother encouraged her, her parents often dismissed her interests in magic, wealth, and friendship as hobbies or wastes of time.
Regardless, she now understands Keem-Shah's perspective on the matter- while it is okay to search for a good life, such things quickly fall by the wayside in the face of danger.

With a nod, she replies, "I know a little bit o' magic, but I can't forgive anyone who would use that power to curse others."

She listens patiently to Shoku's explanation of the situation, as well as Oz's inquiry.

Turning to Oz, she says "I'm Shoku's friend! I don't know too much about the jungles around here, but I'm well on magic. In fact," she adds, turning back to Keem-Shah, "I've heard there are awful witch-like fellas in the wood, who fool people into trusting them, and then curse them. I've heard them called hags- would that be the same as the..." she tries to choke out the Draconic phrase that Keem-Shah used for witch doctor, but doesn't have much luck. "... as the witch-doctors you mention?

"Either way, I wouldn't mind the chance to teach a lesson to some of these brigands who would harm your way of life. Sailing to Mbala might get us some answers, and it may well get us a bit of influence 'round here, she says with a wink at Keem-Shah and a nod in the direction of Shoku.

Returning to Oz, she meets his eyes with a piercing gaze. "I en't had many dreams as of late, least of all dreams about you. I wouldn't ignore something that came in a dream tho. I assume that's the connection between us you mentioned before, eh? What sorts of visions have you seen?"

And with an aside to Scoots, she asks, "Are you going to deal us in or what? Pick a game and we'll start a hand. Nothing like a round cards to get to know new friends!"

He's quite deft at the game and plays as honestly as one can in a poker game. Scoots quickly deals out a hand to interested parties (he just gives a glance to see people's interests and may note Shoku's disapproval). Shoku smiled as the korobuku questioned his martial prowess, "You are forward, are you not, little one? I am but a novice on the path of enlightenment, trained in the halls of the Shogunate by some of the best teachers available. I am versed in the art of the naginata, the daisho, the art of war and strategy, though mastery, as in all things, comes only with time." As the other's began to play a gambling game that Shoku had observed before, he owed out, politely, and respectfully.

"I apologize, my lack of knowledge of this, specific, games manner of play may be of offense to you, as such I will merely observe." He did, however, keenly watch the players, knowing from previous observations that it was as much a game that could reveal one's intentions, their sincerity, and the manner in which they could prevent other's from ascertaining the value of one's own hand. He had come to appreciate it, though he was loathe to participate in such a base activity as gambling.

However, upon hearing Oswald-san speak of his devotion to Lathandar, whom he could only assume was some sort of Patron Liege, he spoke up. "Lathandar? This name is unfamiliar to me," he bowed his head sincerely, "would you have the time to educate me in your liege lord's history, that my ignorance will not offend one, whom I consider to be an ally in this venture?"

"It's a good thing you're not playing, because you sure keep your cards close to your chest," Lizzy quips at Oz. Unsure about whether to take him seriously or not, she echoes Shoku's curiosity about Lathander. She sucks her teeth, and folds early in the first round.

Not being familiar with Luskan poker in particular, but having seen plenty of card games, Lizzy picks it up pretty quickly. Unfortunately, while trying to show off by summoning a watery, translucent hand to hold her cards, she gets distracted by a passing patron who she recognizes, and knocks her cards onto the table for all to see in her rush to say hello. Maybe this drinking and gaming was closer to his heart than he expected. A willful distraction of the real struggles outside. This was oddly enough the safest he felt in the four years since he hatched, the only one of his kind in a foreign tribe talking casually about the cursed island.

"You wish to know of Lathander?" he replied with excitement. "Well, he is known as the Morninglord. Bringer of the sunrise and bane to undead. He is a well respected deity who blesses all forms of beginning. Whether that be the start of a day, birth of new life or start of a new civilisation."

He held the holy symbol close to his chest with pride. "He is not perfect though, but that is what makes him so easy to relate to. All of us make mistakes, but the Morninglord does not judge us for those, so long as the attempt was made for good reasons. He will bless us on our journey, and help keep the evil at bay by bringing the days light to dark places."

The waitress takes the offered coins and orders for food and drink. She seems more swamped by the hour, but somehow managing to keep up. You see her stop behind the bar and she shoots a dark black liquid and shudders. She grabs the platters and returns with the ordered food and drinks, "Anything else, just shout!" She is off in a dart hitting every table in a matter of moments.

The night continues on winding down from the crowd. A huge group of the party dispersed as a man was carried out. The man was blackout drunk at this point and was claiming he wanted another drink. The girl sat down breathing hard in a table near your party and looked at the other tables. The silence that fell makes you all realize just how loud the party was.

"He was the rider of Bertha." She looks your party over, "Do you need rooms for tonight?". Jabon finally comes over and bows slightly to Shoku, "Welcome back to my establishment Shoku. I hope it wasn't too much of a wild night. The man would greet Lizzy with a warm smile, "Miss Lizzybeth, How is your grandmother? Did she get the spirits I sent?"

He turns to Shellface, "It has been some time I wondered if you were still with Shoku. I'm glad you are still looking after him." The man offers a hand to Oswald, "You...You two are new...Welcome to Port Nyanzaru. I hope you don't mind the way we celebrate miracles. I am Jabon and who are you?" He turns first to Oswald and then to Scoots, "Well welcome to my establishment. If you need a room it is 2 silver a night and meals are 5 copper served in the morning and at night."

OOC:

The group would be welcome to stay, but if no one questions Jabon he returns and looks over the bar. The waitress gets a plate of food and eats quickly.

If you requested a night Jabon would take payment now and assign you one of the 6 open rooms.

You guys would have noticed that the waitress has stashed a lot of coins throughout the night. They are just on the other side of the bar near the entrance to the back of the bar. She did this in stealth because she was trying to hide the fact she was being so heavily tipped and hasn't returned to claim the coins.

Shah edged her seat in a way that gave him a better look at the bar, and he concentrated his attention on the bag of coins. People here hoarded shiny things like parrots; coins, gems, jewelry, even just colorful clothing. They regarded the coins as highly as Kekwalah did their brood. When Keem was the hunter, Shah was the protector of the nest. She tried to watch the 'nest'.

They would have told the others, but the group had no social ranks yet, and he did not want the swift and skilled barwoman to be robbed. Distractedly Keem answers Jambon: I thank you but I am unable to pay. I would however ask you to give me the leftovers from our table. It would be a disgrace to throw these away.

You should stash away your earnings more privately, though. Less scrupulous individuals aren't as grateful.

Lizzybeth stands up on the bench to face the bartender. "Ha, she was happily holding the handle of red rum when I left. You made her week, and I can't thank you enough for that!" She presses her heels together and gives the local sailor's salute, thumping her right hand into her chest above her heart twice. Turning to Scoots, she adds, "You asked about rum when we first met, around here they plant the sugarcane between rows of herbs, and they age it with flower petals that give it a stunnin red color and an earthy flavor that makes you glad to be alive. Next time we come in we'll give it a try, eh Jabon?" As she describes the drink, she waves her fingers over her palm, and it appears as if rich red rum is flowing down onto her hand, although it disappears once it spills over her wrist. As she mentions the taste of it, she spreads her fingers and everyone gets a whiff of the rum's aroma: the sweetness of sugar, along with a hint of hibiscus and a base of what might be rosemary.
Finishing her description, she accidentally lets out a loud belch, and with bright red ears, she apologizes and sits down.

As the rest of the party works out their arrangements, she looks to make plans for the next day. Looking at Shoku, she says, "I'll be casting off again tomorrow, but I should be back come sun-high- I can meet ya all at the Anchorage an hour after that, does that work? If we're looking to get an early start, they can sail for a day without me. Don't want to leave the Morninglord hanging, after all!" she says, with a nod to Oswald.

With the night coming to an end, Lizzy leaves with the rest of the party who may be stepping out for the night, turning left instead of right once leaving the inn. As she struts away, she sings a sea shanty about a sailor who ends up selling all of his belongings for booze. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5GBqEDyEss) Before she's out of sight, you see that she's found Old Bertha's jockey, and is supporting him as they sing together and walk into the night.

Oz introduces himself to Jabon and accepts the offer of a room and two meals, providing the barkeep with three silver. He was preparing to warn the the waitress of the unsuitability of her hiding place, when Scoots beat him to it. The kobold was a good sort and showed that all the rumours of their bad ways are just that, rumours.

He continued to enjoy the festivities and listen intently to Lizzy talking about the way rum was created. He had always maintained an interest in the growing of natural things and decided to try the technique on his own garden when he returned home.

At her mention of what time to leave, he chimed in "I can work with whatever is necessary, but my powers are greatest just after dawn. I would suggest that the earlier we leave, the better." and left the rest in his new companions hands.

He proceeded to slowly drink and mingle with the crowd, getting to know the people of the town. Shortly after sundown, he bid everyone goodnight and headed to bed, stumbling slightly from intoxication. As the sun rose the next day, so did Oz as he turned to the dawn and began to pray for his days spells.

Shoku listened as Oswald-san spoke of this Lathandar, intrigued by certain similarities that seemed to exist between his spiritual patron and the Kozakuran Paths of Enlightenment. Then, as the cleric ceased speaking, Shoku nodded, "Thank you Oswald-san, for explaining your belief, and your faith. I hope to witness the character of Lathandar through the actions of one so devoted to his teachings. Perhaps on our travels, this humble servant may educate you on the teachings of Shou-long and the Way of Enlightenment."

Shoku's train of thought was interrupted as Elizabeth-ko asked the table for a final round of food, which he politely waved off. "The steamed rice and fish are enough for me, though I am most appreciative of your generosity." Then Oswald stood up to a rousing cheer, Shoku stood up, raising his cup, loudly declaring a phrase in his native tongue, "Ichi man-ken ikiru!" He noted his companions stares, so he repeated in an accented Thorassian, "To live ten thousand years!"

As the party began to disperse, Jabron approached the table, offering rooms to those that needed. Shoku did not interrupt, as such would be considered rude. However, once the Innkeep returned to the counter, and his other patrons, Shoku spoke softly, "There are rooms above Nakahari's Teahouse in my people's quarters, as offered for your assistance with this endeavor."

The party began to disband, before they did, Shoku bowed to each in turn, "Meet me at the southernmost gates of the Kozakuran Quarter at dawn, we will leave on foot, I will acquire the services of a guide, unless Keem-shah thinks they can more unerringly guide us beneath the canopy of the Penninsula's interior."

Shoku, Shellface, Scoots begin their way to the Kozakura quarter. The night streets outside the primary defenses of the city push narrow in areas and the group can see the race track barriers haven't been removed yet. As the small group turns a corner everyone sees a man standing in the middle. He is joined by five other men and they block the path.

Shoku would recognize the man in the middle as Yoskiro Tsuruchi. His head slowly turns toward the group, "Evening, Tashiro Shoku. Kimoto Shima noticed your abrupt exit today." He pauses and looks at Scoot in disgust, "I see you have yourself another distasteful pet." Tsuruchi looks back to Shoku, "What were you doing at Jabon's establishment tonight?"

The men surrounding Tsuruchi are equipped with wooden swords and Tsuruchi is holding a studded wooden mace. They aren't holding their weapons, but a few of the novices have their hands on the hilts of their wooden swords.

Lizzybeth walks in the opposite direction of the Kozakura district with the man singing up a happy storm. As you approach an entrance to the docks the rider is noticed by a group of riders, "Tyress! TYRESS! Here he is!" They rush over and look you over, "We have been looking for him." Tyress seems instantly happy to see his friends. He pats your head and reaches into his bag of coins and pulls out 5 gold and hands it to you, "Thanks for the walk."

You walk quietly to your grandmother's house. She is already asleep, but over an almost dead set of embers is a small pot of stew.

Shoku and Shellface understand the fact you are not to kill people in the city unless you have a sanctioned purchased from the Merchant Prince(ss)
Jessamine. You are put to death if murder someone without a sanction.

Violence in the city is frowned upon if it is dangerous. There is a type of judicial system. Most often the punishment ranges from humiliation or hard labor to expulsion from the city.

Shoku snarled, "Tashiro Shoku-san, you forget your place Tsuruchi. Because you are inked in Kimoto-san's family crest does not elevate your status, nor allow you the right to speak to your betters as though an equal." He took a step forward, invading the older man's personal space, his chest chest and shoulders a bare inch from the older man's sun-bronzed skin. Tsuruchi's mace needed room to be hefted, and Shoku's scabbard was worn on his left hip, to be drawn by his right hand, by moving close to his opponent he denied him the space to effectively wield his weapon, while allowing himself to drawn and thrust the pommel into the scout's mid-section, before clearing the scabbard and beheading him. He paid close attention to his compatriots positioning as he would need to work clear should weapons be drawn.

"Kimoto-san, is concerned for my well being. Please inform him that I am sincerely grateful. However, I shall be departing for the interior on the morrow." His eyes didn't leave Tsuruchi's, "Your patron and I are of a like mind, we wish to elevate our community's status within the Nyanzaru, however, we disagree on which family best represents the interests, and the honor, of the Kozakuran people." A pause, his hard, cold eyes, burrowing into his opponent's spirit, "Should you wish to discuss the matter further, we can do so tomorrow when we are sufficiently removed from Nyanzaru that our discorse would not interrupt the our host's, Merchant Prince Jessamine's, contemplations."

He stepped back, bowed, ever so slightly, and continued to walk towards his destination, Nakahari's Teahouse.

Invading his personal space, refusing to use an honorific for Tsuruchi, and acting with disregard for his show force, is attempting to cow the older scout. So I feel an intimidate check would be appropriate, rolling Intimidate, +5, [roll0], and lets see how this goes. We have no need of him as Keem Shah has assured me we are good for scouting and trailblazing to our objective, so I have left him with the option to have a duel should he wish to follow us into the Peninsula.

Scoots tenses at the initial sight of the ruffians and relaxed slightly when it's clear they know Shoku, then grits his teeth at the slight. The frill on the back of his head begins to rise before he notices Keem-Shah's glance. As he watches the half-elf confront the leader, he takes a more subservient stance; he may not have understood their culture, but he was a kobold and recognized a power play when he saw one. He'd have to back Shoku up and that meant not rising to the insult. If the warrior got them out without a fight, that was even better; he'd prove the challenger too fearful even with the numbers to back him up.

Everyone meets just outside one of the main gates of Port Nyanzaru. Shoku would check the five gourds of insect repellant. He had convinced the quartermaster of the Kozakura quarter to provide the group with some protections against the diseased swarms of bugs in the jungle. Though as the group moves their way towards the mouth of the river the sea air keeps much of the bugs from bothering the group for now.

After 15 minutes of walking you spot an old man fishing at the mouth of the river. He sees the group approaching and reels in his line.

The ferryman looks the group over with a curious and questioning stare, "It's two silver if you want to be taken to the other side. That is two silver each." He says and steps onto his boat. Shoku offers the ferryman the toll and the group is smoothly ferried across, "Careful not to die." He calls and starts to push off from the makeshift dock on this side.

The jungle lay on the other end of a large clearing, but the further you get from the sea, the more the bugs and humidity start to really become apparent. It isn't long before the group is slapping at the arms. The jungle has a few places one can enter and there is a makeshift sign marking an opening in the jungle as the way to Mbala.

The group gathers outside the jungle and has a chance to prepare the push into the untamed wilds of Chult.

Feeling much more at ease in the jungle, or at least away from the bustling city, Keem-Shah relaxes and enjoys the humid hot weather. They rub their scales together to mush some insects before snacking on them. Their taste is a bitter sensation but they are gone and help feed them in the meantime. If you find any tracks of other bipeds, small or large, tell me. The wisdom of Semuanya will take us to them, for they will look for us, I assume. Remember what I said about the goblins. They ambush and attack with collapsing battle stacks, drowning a single combatant in a sea of goblin bites, knives and spears.

Can someone check the vicinity for monsters as I track the way?

With that, Keem advances, half walking, half slinking. They should press on, every hour in the jungle was dangerous for such a large group. They were not exactly the fastest hunters nor the strongest, and loud enough to get detected by everything. But if Semuanya was on their side, and the others were as skilled as they claimed, this could work out.

Carefully delivering Tyress to his friends, Lizzy sends him off, saying "Give Ol Bertha my best!" Addressing the rest of the riders, she yells "Well done on the track, it was an honor seeing you all race. Good luck next week fellas!" Whistling the rest of the way home, she quiets her approach as she reaches the sailor's district on the north end of town.
Taking a break by the docks, she stands for a minute to listen to the harbor sounds- water splashing, wood creaking, boats gently nudging their moorings as they drifted in and out- oblivious to the confrontation on the other side of town.
Finding her family's ship, she hopped on board and spent 15 minutes repairing a net that had been badly torn by a swordfish the previous day, while her mind wandered through the jungles of Chult and into thoughts of adventure that the next day might hold.

Finishing the work, she hopped back onto the dock and made her way home, quietly slipping through the door and into her grandmother's house. Several of her siblings lay snoring on the floor, and she tiptoed around them to the stew, slurping as quietly as she could as she took one last read through the spells in her book as she prepared for the next day.

Lizzybeth starts her day by returning to the Thundering Lizard. Buying a morning meal, the local specialty of oven-baked fish stuffed with roe and milt and wrapped in fresh kelp, she sits down to eat and waits for Oz to come downstairs into the tavern. When she sees him arrive, she jumps up on her bench and waves him over, summoning up a miniature version of his holy symbol in her hand to help catch his attention.
"Praise be to your morning, Oz! Here's to Mister Lathander blessing our trip today, I'm sure we'll have our fair share of hairy scares once we cross the river." She sits with him as he eats his own breakfast and gets ready for the day. With a careful look, she asks, "Any more dreams last night? Or any other omens or suchlike? There's plenty of future-see-ers in town, but none of em have visions worth more'n my spit. You seem a little different tho!" she adds cheerfully.

Arriving at the gates, she greets the rest of the traveling party with a grin. "Look at us, all ready for a journey into the wilds!" Still dressed in her oversized sailor's coat, the only big change to Lizzybeth's wardrobe is the addition of a javelin strapped across her back, although a closer look might show you that her jacket seems to be sagging with quite a bit more weight than it was yesterday.
Turning to Scoots, she says "I know you don't bother to learn the names of towns you won't spend much time in, but I have a feeling we'll be back in Port Nyanzaru before too long with a hell of a tale to tell."

As Shoku pays the ferryman, Lizzybeth offers him thanks for funding their journey. "I know we're all free hands on this journey, but I sure appreciate you helping us along here!"
Feeling the spray of the salt water with each bob of the boat, Lizzy pulls out of her coat a fishing rod made of short, springy wood. Bracing herself astern, she casts out a few times during their short journey, partly out of practicality but mostly out of habit.
As they reach the entrance to the jungle, she takes some of the insect repellant if offered by Shoku, and makes sure to cover every piece of skin she can reach. "Keem-Shah, will we be seeing any of your fellow Kekwalah on our journey? If we do, maybe they can help us fight off any of these goblins that might try and take a piece of us," she says as she dramatically stabs the air with a dagger (https://www.outfit4events.com/runtime/cache/images/productFull/scheibendolch-rondel-dagger-1029_03.jpg).

As the two sat having breakfast, Oz couldn't help but smile at Lizzy's enthusiasm. There was a darkness in his eyes though. He had dreamt of her again last night and it ended the same way, and he told her as such. Whatever future he was seeing, it hadn't been prevented yet.

After they crossed the river he offered a small blessing to the boatman as an aid on his journey back and followed as Keem lead them to the edge of the jungle. It was an extraordinary sight. It brought up memories of his childhood in the forest, but this was somehow... different. Even more wild.

When Keem finished his warning about the area, Oz leaned down to a small plant just starting to bud from the ground, whispering an ancient druidic phrase and then gently breathing on it. The tiny life took hold and began to grow, sprouting small purple berries as it did. He promptly plucked these and handed them out.

"These are a special form of magic produced by the union of Chantea and Lathander. Their love makes the spell that creates them more potent than usual, though they still only last a single day. If you are injured, eat one and it will nourish your body while also restoring the injuries you have taken to normal."

Shoku woke early, and prepared himself for his journey, venturing to the bathhouse to steam and soak before the trip inland. It was still early enough that no other bathers were present as he poured a ladle of water upon the heated stones suffusing the small room which contained the oaken bath in a cleansing steam. He half expected to see Kimoto-san or his accomplices at the bathhouse to receive another warning, similar to last evenings engagement, he found, oddly, that he was disappointed when he did not.

He returned to his quarters, where, using razor and steel mirror he carefully shaved his jaw, proceeded then to oil and tie his hair in a formal top knot, small clothes, sandals, obi and robe. He brought out his weapons, almost reverently, intoning a prayer of devotion to his ancestors as he cleaned, oiled and tamped his blade before sheathing it in a lacquered scabbard. He donned a linen surcoat, a laminate hauberk, helm, bracers and greaves, thrusting his katana through his obi, and his naginata through it's sheath, he ensured his sandals were tied tightly and proceeded through the Port to the southern gate which led to the interior.

He saw his companions and bowed, his helmet he carried at his hip, instead wearing a wide brim woven hat to keep the sun from his eyes. "The sun has risen, and so our journey begins. Allow me to offer my humble thanks that you, my most skilled companions, have agreed to aid me on this endeavour for the betterment of the Kozakuran Quarter." He turned to Oswald-san, hoping to request of him a prayer to his patron, Lathander, to bless this undertaking, however, as he did so the young man spoke. He accepted the offered blessing with two hands, as he bowed, lifting the gift above his head, "My thanks, both to you, Oswald-san, and to your patron, Lathander, the Lord of Morning." He looked to the rising sun, the steam from the verdent jungle blurring the blazing orb. "An auspicious start, to an auspicious day."

He then proceeded to distribute the concoction he had obtained, that would protect them from the stinging swarms that would soon descend on them.

Everyone moves close to the jungle and after applying a salve it is approachable otherwise the blood-thirsty insects are attracted to anyone unlucky enough not to be wearing the salve.

Shellface looks up with a confused look at the sign pointing towards Mbala. This sign has clearly been moved as recently as this morning. Shellface reaches looks down and can tell around six hours ago 6 to 7 men had gone down this path. Shellface would also know the correct path to take to get to Mbala.

Oswald peers into the jungle but spots nothing out of the ordinary. If there were any creatures or wildlife besides the insects they have run off at the group's approach.

Lizzybeth would've reeled in a small fish and if had more time could have used it for bait, but it was best left to grow up a bit more. Once at the jungle's entrance Lizzybeth notices a plant nestled against a tree. It grows at an odd angle from the tree and is the most brilliant azure color. You also find two mature bytter nut pods hanging low on the tree.

Lizzybeth harvests two feather skin petals and collects two bytter nut pods.

By placing a petal on the tongue, it dissolves and rids the body of all diseases.

When these small nuts are crushed and rubbed into an open wound, the compound heals 1d6 HP.

Shoku and Scoots follows the group remaining on guard as the rest of the party gets an understanding of where they are and how best to begin a trek into the dense foliage.

Lizzybeth takes her newly found herbs, and carefully tucks them into an outside breast pocket of her jacket. If it even is for us, and not some other poor sap without a handy guide," she says with a nudge towards Keem-Shah.

When Keem-Shah mentions her herbs, she smiles bashfully at them. "Can't say my eyes've been trained in any way, just a little bit of luck on my side."

Turning back to the false path through the jungle, she asks, What if the people traveling that way have been fooled as well? We might be the only people who could help them. Plus, if it's an ambush, maybe we can sneak around them and get the drop on 'em as they're spread out!"

If Lizzybeth doesn't know what the nuts & petals do, she will ask Keem-Shah for clarification.

When it comes to deciding which way to go, being aware of the dangers this forest holds, Lizzy is going to push for just sticking to the path towards Mbala; however, if the decision is otherwise, she will go along and suggest the reverse ambush tactic.

Either way, before they leave, she will make sure the sign is in it's proper place.

Only if you do not make any foolish or rash decisions. You warmbloods tend to act on your empathy rather than logic. Keem coldly points out. If the ambushers are clever enough, they deserve to prosper while the others are consumed by the jungle. I do however have a certain dislike for these goblins, who I assume are behind all this. They are weak enough so they need to work with trickery. The sooner they feed the soil, the better.

Survival[roll0] to check any tracks left around the sign post. Are they all human? If so, how many? If they are human, can I gauge their size (not in game terms, but a hefty 6 foot guy leaves larger and deeper imprints than a frail merchant)?

Scoots and Lizzybeth shift the sign back into place, Scoots making sure the base is in position as Lizzy hammers it into place with the hilt of her dagger. The job well done, she watches the rest of the party as we discuss our course of action.

"It sounds like the rest of your night was quite an adventure," she says to Shoku. Stepping towards the correct path to Mbala, she continues, "We're going to be on our own in this jungle, so we need to look out for each other first. If these hooligans are any determined threat, they'll come after us before too long- but we'll be ready for them." So saying, she points her dagger parallel to Shoku's naginata.

As Oz and Keem-Shah continue their moral dialogue, she adds, "I think what Keem means is that sometimes you have to heal the land before you can help the weak. Is that what Semuanya would say in this kind of situation?" She looks between the two of them as she says this. "Empathy might help us in Port Nyanzaru, but I have a feeling things are a little different out here."

Lizzy is putting on a brave front. She's pretty nervous about exploring a jungle she has little to no experience with, and the idea that people are trying to get the jump on her and her friends is jarring enough on top of that- but she's also not going to let fear shake her hand or stop her from discovering the secrets of Chult. We put the sign back, so no one should lose their way. Given how early we left it's unlikely anyone else has come across this other than the people who already changed it anyway. Besides which, the people who changed it might be interested in Mbala themselves, which means we're losing even more ground just standing around here. We should be ready, but we need to press on. So saying, he draws his bow and gestures towards their destination.

Everyone decides to move along the true path to Mbala and they finally push into the dense jungle. The jungle path is worn down by foot travel and the occasional wagon that widens the path slightly, but not enough wagons come through to push the jungle pack any further than three or so feet. The jungle does widen at times, but for the most part, progress is rather time-consuming. The muddy earth makes it rather rough terrain to pass in certain low lying areas.

The group continues along with their eyes and ears peeled for danger or anything out of the ordinary.

Shellface is the first to notice a group of tracks that cuts across the path from one dense wall of the jungle to the other. This puts her on guard as he knows the Batiri goblins often circle around known traveling paths. If the goblin's paths should cross they will ambush the unfortunate group passing through their area of the jungle.

Once the group is alerted to the chance of goblins it suddenly begins to pour rain. You are very slightly protected by the canopy, but it does little to stop anyone in the party from starting to get wet.

This downpour is normal, it rains suddenly all the time in Chult. The whole island acts much like a tropical rain forest.

Shellface you may know about certain locations around you since you are acting as the group's guide. You can roll your history, survival, or nature skill (whichever is greater, but with nature being harder to ascertain ex. One such location would have a DC 10 for history/survival and 15 for nature.)

You would know about locations such as goblin camps, ruins, and possible locations of treasure. I will let you recall these treasure locations in due time, but you can always roll to try recall locations around you. This ability stops working anywhere in the southern half of Chult. That is a mystery to you.

Currently, the rain is making it hard to distinguish sounds, but your sight is unaffected at the moment. You can make perception checks without disadvantage, but anyone sneaking does so at advantage.

With that, the lizard dives headfirst into a puddle of mud, caking his face and body in a brown tinge. Shellface makes his way ahead of the group following a clear path of broken sticks and flattened brush. Keem spots a goblin stack of three goblins ontop of each other, and two other goblins moving a third who isn't moving. The goblins are all talking in a wild raucous form of goblin, and all of them seem to consider their non-moving comrade as if he were a hindrance; eventually just leaving the body in the dense brush.

The two goblins clamber up the single stack to increase the size. The stack sways with the new additions and then corrects itself. the goblin at the top of the group stands on his comrade's masked head to look around. The goblin huffs and points towards where Shellface assumes the trail picks up further along. Waiting for them to leave the area, Keem is certain they seem to be circling back towards the common trail, but now several hundred feet down the trail from the group.

Lizzybeth, Shoku, Oswald, and Scoots take their places with half the group hiding just off the trail. The rest stand their ground in a facade to hide their true strength.

Moving slowly through the downpour, keeping her head on a swivel as she does so, Lizzy crawls into the undergrowth next to Scoots. Sheathing her two daggers, she pulls an elaborate crossbow out from under her coat. Made of a dark wood embellished with gold leif, the handle is a serpentine body that splits into three dragon heads, two that anchor the bow string and one in the center that supports the bolt before firing.

"Let's point different ways down the path, that way we'll get the clearest shot at them," she murmurs to Scoots. So saying, she points her crossbow to aim in one of the directions she has suggested. Seeing that the shine of her bow may give them away, she quickly taps each of the dragon heads. Scoots may hear her mutter, "Saeth then; salchig," and the bow darkens as if it's been dipped in mud. She steadies her aim, and waits for something to leap into her sights.

Seeing the stack of goblins charging at her friends, and observing that one tried to hit her friend Shoku with a blowdart, she angles her crossbow upwards and fires, hitting it in the chest; if that's not enough to kill it, she's certainly set Shoku up for a coup de grace.

Using my readied action & rolls from this post (https://forums.giantitp.com/showsinglepost.php?p=24611759&postcount=74), my crossbow bolt does 6 damage.

The group easily picks the goblins apart. Lizzy's crossbow bolt hits the slightly battered goblin as the one under it is consumed in holy flame. The remaining battle stack of goblins suddenly appear less keen on the fight. The bottom goblin didn't even see where the deadly projectile came from, but it ended between his eyes. The top goblin drops to his feet.

It is the group's turn Shoku included.

Dropping her crossbow, Lizzy darts forward, pulling a net out from under her coat as she runs. Twisting sideways, she lets it unravel a bit before throwing it over the last remaining goblin with a yell.

As his companions dealt with the surviving korobokuru, Shoku moved towards the their fallen enemies. Grimly, he knealt to the side of the goblin's corpse, drawing forth his short bladed sword, and with a single, focus swing, severed the head from the body. Then, standing, careful to keep the creatures foul blood from his armor and clothing, he produced an iron spike, which he used to affix the creature's head to the trunk of a tree, at eye height for any of their tribe mates.

Ignoring the looks of his companions, he repeated this task for each of the felled creatures. As he worked through his grisly task, he intoned a saying in his native Kozakuran, "Sentō de tekiwotaosu dakede wa fujūbundesu. Anata no shōri wa attōtekide, teki no tatakau ishi wa eien ni uchikudaka remasu."

Once complete he moved to his companions, "We should kill the creature quickly, it's loyalty is to it's tribe, not to it's captors. It will surely lead us into ambush, or hazards of the jungle that we are unaware of. Best kill it cleanly, and rely upon Keem Shah's familiarity with the penninsula to guide us."

The group restrains the goblin, and at the threat of death; it stops thrashing. The goblin watches Shoku and turns back to the group addressing it, "Bree-yark! Bree-yark!" The goblin changes from its native tongue to address the group in broken common, "Toku no die...Toku help. Toku no trick...Toku swears."

Shoku continues to make a grisly scene and this has a clear impact on the goblin who looks out through the ropes totally still except the rapid rise and fall of its chest. The goblin thrashes in an attempt to get away from Shoku and screams, "Nooooo, Toku will help! You must let Toku Help! The goblin calms down for a moment to utter a warning, "Mbala is bad, Mbala is Death. Batiri stay away."

The goblin seems compliant after giving this warning and watches the group in fear behind its now lopsided mask.

When Lizzybeth sees Shoku's blade slice through the head of the first goblin he comes to, she quickly turns away, fighting the bile that threatens to rise out of her throat. She turns her head away for a reprieve from the violence, but her gaze roves over goblin corpses, twisted trees, and a thickly forested canopy that hides the light of the sun from their actions.

She takes a moment to close her eyes, holding onto the arm of the goblin that Oz is restraining on the other side. She feels the net and tensed muscles beneath her hand, smells the tangy, sticky scent of blood and death on the air, and listens to Shoku's mantra and hammering. It's a long way from the comforting undulations of the sea she knows so well... but she's a long way from Port Nyanzaru now.

Looking up at Oswald, she asks, "Hold him tight, won't you?" She releases the goblin and pulls out a length of silk rope, which she uses to start binding its hands behind its back. Taking a note from Keem-Shah's intimidation tactics, she makes sure to jerk its arms into an uncomfortable position before doing so.

After everyone asks their questions, but before Toku can answer, she begins chanting, "Claoch, claoch," and with a flourish, a small glowing knife appear in her hand. She reaches around to begin carving a pattern into the goblin's stomach, low enough for it to see. Although the knife doesn't seem to cut into the flesh, when she finishes, the pattern she has made flashes for a moment before fading. As it fades along with the knife, you hear the sound of a whistle blow, from no apparent source.

She steps around to face him and, pulling out her dagger, snarls "We've struck you with a curse. If you lie to us, or attempt to hurt or mislead us in anyway, that mark will activate and you'll be turned into stone, never to breath again!" By the end of this threat, she is red and panting, with her knife almost to the point of the goblin's neck.

The goblin seems to look away from Keem at the probing question, "We are Batiri." The goblin looks hesitant to talk about Mbala, "The people there died slowly...taken by bird beasts." The Group sets off with the shifty-looking goblin leading the way. The goblin leads the group from the trail and back to it through some thick untraveled forest. Monkeys, birds, and other animals seemed to dance in the canopy as the rain lifted and the sun brought the life of the forest out again. The group is stopped by their goblin guide a few times especially when going down paths less traveled. It guides them safely around dangerous plants and pits.

The sky starts to turn dark and the group starts to feel the need to apply another layer of salve. It is eventually nightfall and the goblin address the group. "Dangerous to travel at night. Su-monsters tend to venture out." Toku says and points to a less dense cloister of trees and growth.

The goblin rushes to grab at a bug and eats its head off while it waits for the group to settle down for the night.

As they begin their journey down the path to Mbala, Lizzybeth follows Scoots and helps him look out for dangers. "Thanks for your kind words before, Scoots. I'm glad to be traveling with you all. I've never traveled this far inland before... but I can't deny I'm excited!" She keeps a close eye on the woods, although she is easily distracted by various animals making their way through the trees.

Once the party comes to a rest in the copse, Lizzybeth is quick to shimmy up a tree to try and get a view of the surrounding area. While she's up there, she'll try to pull off a few different types of vines and leaves that she can play with.

Once she's back on the ground, she sits down and pulls out a book from inside her jacket, which she opens and reads for about ten minutes. She murmurs phrases to herself as she does so, and seems to be flipping between a few pages over and over again. When she's done, she walks over to Toku. Summoning up the only phrase she's heard in his language, she asks a little hesitantly, "Bree-yark... Batiri?"

After trying to climb a tree and falling on her ass, Lizzybeth wipes some of the mud off and watches Scoots tie up the goblin they have captured. Hearing his caution to Keem, she mutters, "After what Shoku did to the ones we defeated, that would be an honorable fate."

With a shrug, she says, "Either way, the least I can do is set up an obstacle for anyone trying to get the drop on us. How about I wrap some of this around our campsite to make a tripwire?" Here she holds up her fishing line with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

The goblin stares blankly at Lizzy as she attempts to speak his language, "You surrender?" The goblin would offer some basic goblin words in return for water and better food than the bugs around.

Shoku's threats were met with an "Unf!". The goblin leans his head back and starts to snore a few minutes later.

The group settles in for the night. It rains for a moment, but it is short and lasts long just enough to get everyone wet. The morning is muggy, wet, and brings the ever-annoying aspect of bugs. The salve works again if the group continues to use it. The goblin heads is leaning back against the tree with his mouth agape. The noise coming from the small creature is tremedous as it snores in its sleep.

The tripwire left by Lizzy was left undisturbed. The goblin looks up at the canopy, "We make it by nightfall if we move."

Keem, Scoots, and Toku suddenly feel an instinctual fear as they hear a screeching roar. The group sees the undergrowth rustle and a long tusk boar breaks through already in a dead run towards the group. There is another loud screeching roar and over the undergrowth jumps a large feathered creature; The dinosaur has razor sharp talons on feathered arms, sharp razor-like teeth in a long mouth, and is running on two taloned feet.

The creature chases after the boar which is now nearing the group's camp.

The action is taking on the other side of the trail and coming towards the group. The Dinosaur is 150 feet away and the Boar is 60 feet away from the group. The Trail is 30 feet away from group.

Shoku awoke early, performing a brief perimeter around the camp, he was satisfied that their captive did not betray them over the course of the night. Though he began to suspect the creature's plot may be more insidious, his awful night noises meant to deprive them of sleep and leave them fatigued and vulnerable to further attacks or passive resistance. On returning to his gear, he began a careful inspection of the leather ties, checking the armor for fraying while oiling the metal links to prevent rust from the insidious moisture.

He then oiled and powdered his katana blade, intoning a small prayer to his ancestors as he did so, the incense he lit refreshed him, despite the sodden humidity, and allowed him to concentrate on the task ahead. He applied the foul smelling repellent, and suitably armed and armored, he joined the other's for a light repast before preparing for the days journey.

That was when chaos erupted, the boar followed by a feathered raptor of sorts, he looked to the others "Ensure our captive remains secured and doesn't try to escape in the ensuing melee." With that he leveled his naginata, and advanced towards the road.

Once he assumed a proper fighting stance, he bellowed a loud kiai, or shout, to draw the creature's attention and announce himself as a threat to the beasts.

Oz arose as the last person on watch, seeing the dawn in while patrolling the small camp. He enjoyed the chance to stretchthe night away. He was not unused to sleeping in harsh conditions, but a hammock did not match the comfort of his straw bed at home.

As the first rays of light crept over the horizon, he kneeled down with his shield in front, giving praise to Lathander and the dawn.

As he stood, he gave a nod to Shoku who was already moving about camp when the screech reached his ear. Within seconds he saw the approaching monstrosity and quickly grabbed his gear.

"Let the beast pass!" he shouted to Shoku. "It should lead its predator away!"

The dinosaur launches into the air and attempts to pounce/collide with Shoku as he drives the Polearm up into the feathered Deinonychus breastplate. The dinosaur drops in a heap, breaking the arrow buried in its skull in half, and driving the tip deeper. The sounds of the jungle come back into focus as the adrenaline slowly stops flowing.

The boar breaks through some brush behind the group and attempts to flee deeper into the jungle. Meanwhile, Toku stares in stunned disbelief at the group's ability to drop such a large fearsome creature in such a fashion.

Accepting her bolt when Scoots hands it back to her, she replies, "You're quite a good shot yourself. I've never had to use this thing in a real fight before, so I'm glad it hasn't let me down." She pats one of the dragon heads gently, before stowing her bow beneath her coat. "How do you manage to keep your cool when enemies start charging at you? Have you been in many fights before?"

Standing beside the dinosaur corpse, she gathers a few feathers off of it, and pulls out a fang, if possible. Having done so, she watches Keem-Shah's ritual intently, observing his preparations and ritual actions. Without looking away, she says to Oz, "I got a brief look at your ceremony this morning. Meanwhile, Keem's sharp eyes, turned sharper by druidic magic, finds some interesting tracks. Keem scouts some 15 to 20 feet in front of the group and after an hour it is clear the tracks are snaking towards Mbala. The tracks suddenly change from standard ruts to a deep dig into the jungle path. It is clear the cart suffered a setback here. The group can discern from the looks of the track the wheel came loose and the axel dug into the ground.

The tracks continue on but are clearly fresher. The setback must've been bad because the new tracks are only 1-2 hours old. Keem's passive scrutinizing glance around uncovers something very interesting among the lizardfolk tracks, there are clear signs of a human's tracks among them. Keem can tell the man had even knelt down with the lizardfolk at some point in order to do something.

As the group moves to continue on, Scoots spots something glinting in the mud and stops Oswald just as he is about to step on the silver-gold coin. Once in Scoot's hands Lizzybeth can clearly see it is an electrum coin.

Meanwhile, Toku is more interested in a lizard climbing a tree and seems to forget he is a captive to the group. The lizard jumps from the tree as Toku tries to bite it, and they both start to run down the path.

Shoku watches Keem's progress with interest, especially when it is discovered that a man travels with the pack of lizard folk. Someone from the Kozakuran community, another interested party, suddenly he was very cautious, considering the multitude of betrayals that this single track could signify. The sudden movement from his left drew his attention back to the present.

"Creature, you were warned!" He drew his katana as he advanced on the goblin, "The first attempt at escape and your life would be forfeit. I had hoped you would have chosen a clean death at the site of our initial conflict. Leaving your headless body here, to be devoured by scavengers and lizard folk was not my choice. But your own."

OOC: If within 30' Shoku will advance and attack the goblin in an attempt to kill him, I will roll initiative because some may wish to intervene. [roll0]; On my action, I will move 30' towards the Goblin, and then I will attack him, holding the sword with two hands, [roll1] vs AC, for [roll2] damage, additional [roll3] if a critical hit.

Whelp! Even if I win initiative, he ducks out of the way. How dishonorable, he should have knelt down and let me end it. It is the Kozakuran way lol!

Shoku's face was disciplined in his strike, however, the uneven footing, coupled with his own companion attempting to restrain him caused his powerful strike to swing wild, slicing deeply into a vine laden tree trunk. "Korobokuru!" His voice was deadly calm as he cleared his blade from the tree and took two steps back, with a flick of the wrist he cleared the sap and condensation from the blade, but did not sheath it. "You will NOT approach me in such a manner again. You do not understand, he is our enemy, his kin attempted to kill us. At your," his eyes took in the entire group, "request, he was shown mercy. Against my objections. He is not a pet, he is not a companion, and to show him mercy a second time, is to invite betrayal. It is a weakness."

He looked to the fleeing goblin, and then back to Bejick, "I promised him that should he attempt escape he would be slain for it. Are you asking me to break my word?!"

Swiftly, Keem enchants a stone and throws it after the lizard, hitting it. It picks the creature up, throwing it to the hungry goblin.

Do that again and the next rock will crack your skull, goblin.

Shoku! You may be your clan's chieftain back in the city, but out here you are nothing more than us. The jungle does not care what you think is appropriate.

Scoots, we do not owe this creature anything. To my knowledge we did not mention not killing the goblin.

The lizard stands in between Scoots and Shoku, looking at Toku with the glowing stone in hand.

Whatever you two do, do it quickly. We are gaining on my kin. They have a human with them, I assume a guide since we do not take prisoners. Speaking of which, we are at Mbala. Toku has served his role. Keem states.

Shoku's approach on Toku didn't go unnoticed and with a scream, the goblin bounces back to allow the blade to cut into the ground, "Bree-YARRRK!". The goblin seems to be about to bound until Keem hits the lizard, walks past, and tosses the lizard to the always hungry goblin.

Toku nods and swallows fearful of the group already being outnumbered. Once the group begins to speak amongst themselves Toku sits down to enjoy the taste of the stunned creature, by biting off its top half and giving what could pass with a happy bloody smile.

Once Keem brings up the point that the goblin has fulfilled his end of the prisoner contract; the creature tilts his head, "I can leave back to my tribe?"

Lizzy feels a raindrop land on the top of her head and slowly drip-by-drip the rain starts to pick up.

As the lizard scuttles through the underbrush, dodging left and right, a watery hand with knuckles made of seafoam appears underneath it, grabbing it around the middle and holding it up in the air. It floats there for a second before it’s head is knocked off by a glowing pebble, hurled by Keem-Shah.

Lizzybeth watches the exchange with a tense expression on her face, not quite sure where she stands. To Oswald, she says, "Our goblin friend chased after a lizard, and Shoku didn't like that, so he tried ta kill him, but Scoots stopped him, and now rain's starting again. But I guess you didn't need me for that last part."

Marching up to the rest of the group, Lizzy says, "I know Toku won't hurt us or betray us to his tribe, because if he does, the curse that we have laid upon him will turn him to stone!" She says this very theatrically, glaring at Toku as she speaks the last part. Talking more quietly to her teammates, she explains, "I don't want ta kill him. If we don't need his guidance anymore, then we could set him free- but I'm worried that letting him go would only result in danger to us. Since we're in the jungle... we should probably end his life." Lizzybeth says this with a grim determination, clearly unhappy about this choice but determined regardless.

Shoku stared down the diminuitive scout, "I understand your reservations, but you have been deceived. His size, his ignorance, have blinded you to the fact that he is a warrior, a killer. We slew his companions, do you think he FORGOT that in the quest for food? No. He would betray us in an instant, either to gain a measure of justice for his fallen companions, or to betray us to his tribe."

He shook his head, somewhat disappointed in Bejik's objection to the handling of their captive. "Should you decide he is of no value to us, I will end his life. Should you wish to spare him, he is to accompany us, bound, gagged, and will be your sole responsibility."

Toku moved near Oswald and Scoots to give Keem plenty of room to move around him. The goblin's ears, demeanor, and attitude all went sour as the group trudged onward. The rain only lasted for a few more minutes and the group was able to make good time through the peaceful jungle. Keem knew the way at this point and was leading the group. She knew the path would continue for a couple more hours until it forked; one path would lead to a common camping ground and the other to Mbala's most accessible ascent.

Toku marched near Lizzybeth and Oswald, "Can you believe he wants to eat me?" The goblin blinks over at Lizzybeth unaware of her early comment, "Thank you for feeding and being nice to me. I only want to make it to my tribe again. Do you have a tribe?"

The trip was rather uneventful after the small conversation, but now Toku was apologizing to everyone again for about fourth or fifth time. Keem was just turning back around as he heard Toku start rolling off more apologies starting with Scoots. "I'm sorry small friend," The fork in the road could be seen. There was an odd sight on a newly erected signpost, a brand new wheel with metal bracings all around it. "I'm sorry scary sword man," The fork to Mbala was obscured by the jungle, but into view came two small lizardfolk, they didn't look young just puny. "I'm sorry crazy lizard," They lifted the wheel together and began walking it back out of sight. "I'm sorry nice lady,"

The path circles towards the signpost. The spot where Keem saw what happened is about 200 feet away. Toku isn't exactly being quiet.

Should I try to parlay with them? Chances are high they are hostile, another tribe and all. They are tiny and not shamans, so they are likely scouts. If we can take them out, they are effectively blind.

Shoku largely ignored the diminuitive creature's attempt to gain sympathy, it was a cunning creature, playing it's captors against one another. However, his allies had made their intent clear, and he realized that if he pushed his own sense of honor on them it would be largely disruptive, and counter to their intended goal. As such, he waited, stone faced, and silent while the goblin spoke.

Upon seeing the two scouts, he readied the naginata, agreeing with Keem's assessment of the situation, trail scouts that should be eliminated to prevent any warning from escaping and alerting a larger fighting force. However, the discussion quickly turned to parlay, which seemed futile to Shoku, simply for the lack of anything the group had to offer the scouts.

"I can speak with the scouts, of course, but not knowing which clan, or tribe they are associated with, or even whose territory we find ourselves in, puts us at disadvantage in any negotiation. We have little to nothing to offer them, short of their lives." He squared his shoulders, "Perhaps that will suffice."

With that he strode forward, in clear view of the two lizard-wrought scouts, "Trail Guardians!" He shouted by way of gaining their attention, "We seek passage to M'bala along this trail, and we would hope you do not mean to impede our progress."

Keem & Shoku made their way ahead of the group and called out to the obscured party. Suddenly, two lizardfolk carrying spears appear around the bend. The lizardfolk seems scared to see the group and the ones behind them. The tense moment was interrupted when a rather ancient-looking man, using a staff to carry his weight, glided into view. The man takes a step in front of the lizardfolk putting a hand on one of them. He seems to weigh up the situation for a moment.

His worried look soon turns to a warm smile, "We mean you or no one else any harm." The old man puts a hand up and some other lizardfolk, some not carrying any weapons, come into view. There was a small runt among them hiding behind a female lizardfolk of adolescence age.

The old man smiles warmly at Keem and speaks in a series of hiss and growling noises, "You are a special one, born in a very dire time." The man takes a labored breath, "If you are on the way to Mbala it is just that way." The old man gestures behind him, "I ask a favor before you move on. The old man awaits the group leader's answer.

The old man walks with Keem to the cart, with the group following at a distance. The other lizardfolk went about setting up camp and preparing a fire, "These are my children. They have been outcast from their respective groups. I saved them in one way or another." Once the rest of the group rounds the bend and spots the cart, they see it is covered in a wide variety of equipment, goods and colorful bolts of silk and cloth run all around the top and bottom.

The old man nods and leans down with Keem and Lizzybeth. The axel was sitting into the ground with a discarded and broken wheel to the left and the new one being held by a young lizardfolk to the right, "We need to lift the cart to slide the wheel on." The old man stayed resting on his staff as the group sized up the challange. The cart was heavy laden and would take a lot of strength to lift.

A young lizardfolk says something under his breath in a glutteral growl, "Bad sign..." The old man slips beside the young lizardfolk and starts guiding him away, "I'll leave it in your capable hands. I'd like to speak to Thres beside the fire for a moment." The man walks away whispering in draconic to the boy.

The man seemed to be very stern with the child, but he ended their 'talk' with a loving fatherly tone. The young lizardfolk slipped off the log beside the man and began helping with the meal. The old man comes back as the group works, "I am sorry for his views. He is learning tolerance, but some things are ingrained."

This is a small challenge the cart weighs about 1,200 lbs. You can use strength checks with advantage to lift the cart given that two stronger lizard folk are going to help.

It could be done in two successful strength checks and a dexterity check done simultaneously. Mend can be used to mend the whole setup once the wheel is in place.

Also, Keem notices the axle is weakened from multiple falls, so if the cart drops again it may break.

Shoku did not enjoy the situation, there were not enough of his allies to protect from an ambush if they stripped to the waist and began to haul the wagon from it's mire. Keem-shah, however, seemed to at least understand their guttural language, so there was little to do besides move the burden from the road and seek to repair it once in position. He circled the cart, looking for leverage, noting the axle, he motioned toward his companions, "Lizzybeth and Rayleigh, lift with your backs and bear the weight at the rear of the cart. Do not use the axle to lift, as it's condition appears weakened, and will likely shatter if mishandled. This brute," he motioned to one of the larger lizardmen, "and I will lift the wheel well, while Bejeek and Keem-shah re-seat the wheel upon the axle. Once in place we need to lower it, slowly, to ensure that crossbeam doesn't fracture under the strain."

He waited until his companions were in position and heaved on his side of the cart.

OOC: Strength scores for the group are as follows, 16, 12, 11, 8 & 8 ... so those may well be our bane! Putting Lizzy on the other Str- check with Rayleigh (who should cast Guidance on Lizzy) and rolling a Strength Check, with Advantage on my side, [roll0], adding +3 to the higher of the two rolls. Let's see how my side goes! Yup, an 11, about my luck. It was a good plan while it lasted.

Shoku's foot slips in a slick of wet mud, but Lyth and Lizzybeth heft the cart up just enough to align the axle. Shoku quickly regains his footing and stands to hold the cart steady for the wheel to be pushed onto the axle. Shoku, Lyth and Lizzybeth feel the weight of the cart and know they can only hold this for a few more seconds before possibly faltering.

Scoots and Keem move the wheel into place and quickly set to work the wheel onto the axle.

I was not blessed with the force of a warrior. The land has drained me, leaving my enduring shell and my innate senses.

Be careful as another such mishap may destroy the wood's integrity entirely.

The lanky druid stands by, watchful, if a bit distraught that he cannot aid and is even worse than the small halfling.

The kobold still looks uneasy about the situation, but moves to help with the cart and wheel. Scoots motions to Toku to stand near Keem while he helps set the wheel, then looks to their lizardfolk companion We all contribute how we can. It's what makes an army or tribe strong

The task complete, Shoku mopped his body with a cloth, before replacing his half coat and then buckling his armor overtop, retreiving his weapons he wandered towards the older man. "The task is complete, now tell me, what have you observed in the area?"

After helping, Keem slinks into the background slightly. He was unsure of the intentions of the group, but wouldn't want to sour relations so early. He kept watch. We would be grateful of any insights.

Also if you have seen anything, tell us! Broodlings, nest warden; speak up. Keem commands in a more demanding manner.

The druid returns to the group and checks the wheel, "Thank you, my children are quite eager to speak to you. Also, if you wish to see my wares I'll be happy to offer you a discount." He pauses and reaches into his cloak "This is for helping to stop us." The man pulls a medium-sized sack of coins from his cloak and hands it to Shoku.

You find 250 GP and two hints of platinum coins catch your eye.

"How about we start with names? My name is Dotheg." He would wait for the group's names and nods, "Well, recently we passed a patrol from Fort Vengeance bringing news of dire times. They mention an ever-increasing horde of undead pushing across the river. They are also being relentlessly attacked by the predators of the jungle. I suppose Tyr's presence can only do so much in this forsaken land."

The group is welcomed around the cart where some of the lizardfolk have rolled up logs. The old man sits down and the youngest of the lizardfolk runs up to show him something. The man leans in the look and speaks briefly with the boy.

The lizardfolk look between each other and the old man nods when they look at him. One of the scouts steps up, "We are all equals, but I will speak for the group." He points to the trees, "We've been followed by monsters every night for the past three nights."

The old man takes this moment to start opening his cart. The glimmer of weapons, potions, and other wondrous goods are hefted into view, "Please take some time to try out some of the goods while we rest." He hangs a brown rusty looking bag that seems to move by itself for a moment before he hangs a purple bag opposite it.

The man reaches up and taps the top of the cart with his staff and silks fling to every corner with a banner advertising, 'Dotheg's Wonderous Wagon'

Oz begins looking wonder at the contents of the cart, his eyes flicking from item to item searching for anything that would prove useful, or showed signs of the Morninglord's touch.

"So Dotheg." he began, his sight not moving from the cart. "Did I hear you correct in saying that you worship Tyr? The Maimed God and Lathander have always been on good terms, so it is fortuitous that we have crossed paths and can aid each other."

He moved slightly, making the shield, with its rising sun emblazoned on the front, more visible to the merchant. He wanted to ensure there was no question as to who he represented.

"Based on your faith as well as your accent I assume you are from Calimsham? Or possibly Tethyr?"

I'm making a couple of assumptions based on the previous post. If there is anything for sale that is related to Lathander or Chauntea then he will almost certainly ask about it. Otherwise he is looking for anything that could prove useful on the journey ahead.

He conversation is more to steer the merchant in the direction of a discount considering their gods close relationship and his position as a member of the church.

Keem-Sha's rest is without disturbance. Before nightfall they excuse themselves to commune with the land for half an hour or so. The creature lays itself into an undisturbed mud pit, not only drowning the remaining insects in heavy dirt, but also getting a feel for the fertility of the land. Most things feel as usual. The mud smells earthen, the rain water tastes fresh. But Keem can't help but feel the air filled with a miasma of noxious fumes, with the ichor of death. Usually more careful, the shaman communes with spirits this time instead of the land. Raging beasts were slain fighting the undead. Semuanya consumed their essence, and gifted it to the reptilian druid.

You have maimed gods? Keem asks the old man. Injured ones should be consumed by the healthy to strengthen the unity. But your faith aided us before, it seems your culture is centered around protecting the weak. And nothing is more dangerous than an old beast bearing scars of won battles. the lizard finally adds up, trying his best to keep ahead of diplomatic relations.

It seems I have found myself linked to the spirits of this realm. Beasts have fallen to the darkness around, and the spirits around grant me their strength, agility and endurance. he also proclaims without pride, as if stating the weather.

He turns to Dotheg. Do you have any potions or other things to aid us with conquering M'bala?

Shoku initially refused the sack, bowing his head slightly to druid, "Master Dotheg, it is a princely sum for a moments work." As the man proferred the sack again, and began introductions, "Master Dotheg, your sincerity speaks to your generosity, it is out of respect to you and yours that I humbly accept your gift and grant you may own." A pause, "When you journey north and east to the Shoshenstar river, and follow it's banks to the mouth, you will find Port Nyanzaru, there you and yours may find sanctuary in the Kozakuran quarter. Present them this seal, and tell them that you have been granted such by myself. Toshiro Shoku, loyal servant of Takenaka Okawa, shikken of the Kozakuran isles."

He did not choose to speak for his companions, as such would bring dishonor both to them, and to their family. Instead, he bowed once again, and turned his attention to the inhuman refugees and scouts that druid choose to travel with. "You speak of the unclean? Corpse flesh that walks, it's soul removed, departed, it's form animated by foul corrupting magics?" A look of horror crossed his face, the unclean were an abomination and should their presence permeate the penninsula, it's source needed to be located and cleansed by any means necessary.

Scoots eyes Shoku after his initial refusal of the pouch and nods when he takes it. He gives Dotheg a brife Scoots and turns to Toku Don't move, got it?. He then head over to the cart and looks through the proffered items, listening to Dotheg and the scout's warning. His head pops up at the mention of nearby undead. Oz, you able to make heads or tales of any of this stuff in the wagon? Holy water is supposed hurt the undead, right? Any of that in here?

Sorry for the delay in posting.
I'll post this OOC if it seems it gets missed, but I think Strudel might be out. They just had to quit DMing another game I was in for personal reasons, so I'm not sure if she's able to keep playing or not.
