History
Approximatly 1000 years ago a powerful construct was built. This contruct was speacially designed to do two things: Think and learn. Its creators (The Apature monks) were aware of the risks this posed so they had a one of their number guard it day an night, they were to use a red lined scroll which could cast sending to request help should the construct grow too powerful. Sadly this plan failed, the construct (named GLaDOS) took over the monistery and killed all but a few. The survivors where kept as subjects for an experiment. One day however GLaDOS went too far and killed a creature known as a "Companion Cube". This caused an unknown survivor to rebel and destroy GLaDOS. To this day the Protectors of the Cube (founded by survivors) remember and revere the Cube as a symbol of all that is good.
The Companion Cube
Very little is known about the companion cube. Some members of the protectors believe it was a silent construct, others that it was a living being capable of speech. Some claim it was none violent (refusing to stab anyone) others claim it often made death threats. What is agreed upon is that it had a great weakness: Its heart(s) were on the outside of its body. It is believed that it finally succumbed to fire.
Influence: The organisation is more or less know as a group of eccentrics. They have no influence but few people are intersted in causing problems. Indeed many adventurers have made a tidy profit investigating for them. There is a chapter in most reasonably sized settlements.
Symbol: Four squared aranged in a 2x2 pattern with a heart in the middle.
Alignment: The majority of the organisations members are Chaotic Neutral however the organisation itself is lawful.

The PCs are hired to search the ruins for more clues as to what happened to the cube and what it was
The PCs wizard or bard uncovers some previously unknown lore about the Companion Cube, perhaps the local chapter of Protectors' would be intersted?
A mysterious man in a suit has been plagueing the local chapter. The PCs are hired to investigate.
