View Full Version : Is there a way to be considered a elf and a gnome at the same time?

Hi

I want to take a prestige class that require me to be a gnome(Shadowcraft Mage) but I would also like to be an elf to use the Elf Wizard Racial Substitution Levels from Races of the Wild which require me to be an elf.

I was wondering if there's a way to be considered an elf and a gnome at the same time.

I'm open to all options. Items or spells or anything.
By exemple, can I polymorph into a gnome when I'm about to gain a level and when I level and I'm still under the gnome form, get the Shadowcraft Mage prestige class?

Thanks for the information and have a nice day.

You could go changeling, with racial emulation, but it would only work for one at a time.

Obvious answer is being an elf with stone blessed prc from races of stone, with the chosen race being gnomes. They are in the same book iirc.

Another option is to get elfblooded or whatever subtype, I remember there being a feat for it, like dragon touched......
But I can't remember where, probably 3.0 though....

Playing as an elf and taking 3 levels in the Stoneblessed PrC (Races of Stone) will do that for you.
A changeling with the Racial Emulation feat (Races of Eberron) can by default cherry pick other humanoid races' racial substitution levels (as you're only required to be of a certain race to take them) and by choosing to emulate a gnome enter Shadowcraft Mage afterwards.

By exemple, can I polymorph into a gnome when I'm about to gain a level and when I level and I'm still under the gnome form, get the Shadowcraft Mage prestige class?
Technically losing the prerequisites for a PrC after having entered it doesn't disqualify you from it (unless it's a PrC from Complete Warrior), but it's a bit of a grey area and often debated so check with your DM about what rules they plan to enforce on this matter if you plan to take this route.

If Pathfinder is on the table, a Half-Elf with Racial Heritage (Gnome) (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/racial-feats/racial-heritage/) could do it.

EDIT: Alternatively, use the adaptation for Shadowcraft Mage that decouples it from Gnome.

The Stoneblessed prestige class in Races of Stone can make a member of any race count as a Gnome at its 3rd level, but that's way too late to start taking Wizard.

Why do you need this? The Gnome Wizard 1 substitution level is better as it has synergy with Earth Spell, and you generally want to take Master Specialist 4 for the bonus feats and +2 DC on every shadow illusion you cast.

Adaptation
A cabal of nongnome illusionists could certainly use this prestige class; simply replace the racial requirement with a requirement that shadowcraft mages be members of the cabal.

If you chose to use the adaptation section, you will simply need to start a cabal before entering Shadowcraft Mage. Leadership would make that SUPER easy, but there are other ways of locating and working with other illusionists.

A changeling egoist with racial emulation can be both.

Use the minds eye acf for egoists and you'll have minor shapechange abilities to use racial emulation on. Only costs a level, a feat, and your race choice. Although, you might want to look at the changeling sub level for illusionists too...
