View Full Version : Optimization A good defense against feints?

Besides maxing out your Sense Motive skill, is there any good way to get impossible to trick with a feint?

(Being non-intelligent isn't exactly a good option for an adventurer.)

I know feinting is pretty much pointless with the standard rules, and probably still a waste of your action economy even with the Improved Feint feat, making it uncommon in combat.

However, characters really specialized in feinting, with maxed-out Bluff and feint as a free action (there are way to do this) can be very dangerous. Is there a way for a character who really dislike being feinted to counter such a specialist?

Raise your flat footed AC.
Get heavy fortification (or improved uncanny dodge).
Stay out of melee range or full attack them to death.

and feint as a free action (there are way to do this)

If I recall, all the methods that allow feinting as a free action were all errataed to either be 1/round, or changed to a swift action instead, so you can't just infinitely repeat feint until you succeed.

(or improved uncanny dodge).

Improved uncanny dodge does nothing to help against feinting, because feinting doesn't make you flat footed, it simply denies you your dexterity, which are not the same thing.

I believe invisible blade grants free action feinting

the fortification mentioned above is expensive but a good method.

Don't forget, you get to add your base attack bonus to Sense motive checks made to oppose a feint.

that is a good point.

I did not know this.

If you're nonhumanoid, they take a -4 penalty on their check. Warforged is probably the easiest way to do that, but some other good options are Killoren, Anthropomorphic Animals, Necropolitans, Elans, (savage progression) Planetouched, (savage progression) Feytouched, and (savage progression/transition class) Half-Fey off the top of my head.

Of those, Necropolitan and Half-Fey can both be added to an existing character, and are both generally considered worth the investment.

The defense against feint is Bab + sense motive, so it doesnt have to be extremely high. There's a shield enhancement that gives +10 against it, forget what it's called.
