I raise tarantulas as a hobby and just yesterday I got some little babies (spiderlings or "slings") of a species I've been trying to acquire for a long time and they're very smol and very cute and I'm very excited.

Their scientific name is "Sericopelma sp.Santa Catalina" (common name "Santa Catalina Red Legged Birdeater").

I got three of them and I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for names.

Something thematic and interesting. Could be serious or silly. One genus I keep is funny words in Spanish (Jiraffa, Cuchillo, Esteban Universidad), another is words relating to royalty or authority (Duchess, The Duke, Destro, Baroness, Princess Snu Snu). This is very likely the only species I'll keep from this genus, so I only need a theme big enough for three.

Most likely, I won't know their sex for a year or more, so unisex names (or names that can be gender-flipped) are cool (but not mandatory).

Any help is appreciated! Or if you just want to talk about tarantulas, or are interested in anything about their keeping, I'm into that too!

Not only do I not have any spiders named that, that actually never even occurred to me. I think I might have to turn in my nerd-card.

Where are you from? We sing that song 'Itsy Bitsy Spider' here in the Great Frozen North. Where do they say "incy, wincy."

And they are certainly small enough that some rain would put a serious dent in their day.

If only you had another, you could have gone with Inky, Winky, Blinky, and Clyde. Could skip Clyde, I suppose, the other three are nicely unisex.

I have not yet come up with some appropriate Spider names, but I want to mention that in the images of them as babies, the lighter trichobothria on their front four legs makes them look like they've got wee white arm warmers on. That's adorable.

I KNOW! This is my first time with this species, and info on-line is a little scant. So I wasn't sure what to expect and the little stripe-legs do look like leg-warmers! They're super cute.

Since there's just three you could name them after graph directions, X, Y and Z.

Or after the three wise monkeys, See, Hear and Say/Speak.

If you wanted to go fancy, how about the three Fates from Greek mythology? I don't know if birdeaters are that known for spinning, but the Greeks called 'em Clotho, (Spinner, because she spun the thread of fate) Lachesis (Allotter, who decided who got what fate) and Atropos (Inflexible, because she cut the thread and therefore killed the individual). The Roman versions (aka slightly different but basically recolours, but I believe one of the main differences is that they were often evoked regarding childbirth) are Nona, Decuma, and Morta.

I can't think of many names that sound similar to Great Britain. Australia has one, but I'm fairly certain they don't say "incy wincy spider" there. And in any event, simular-sounding country names is a silly way to determine how a song differs.

Take that, amusingly-written Wikipedia sentence fragment!

I kind of like taking the names of mythological figures associated with spiders in one form or another. Arachne, Anansi (or simply "Nancy"), Indra (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indra%27s_net), Sanzang (or Tripitaka), et c.

You could also go with a trio of literary spider names: say, Charlotte, Shelob, and Aragog.

I love the leg warmers too, very 80's work-out video. Maybe you could name them after famous leg-warmer-wearers. For example: Jane Fonda, Suzanne Somers, and Olivia Newton John. Or just Jane, Suzanne, and Olivia for short.

Both good ideas. A little more generic than I was hoping for.

That is a good idea. All tarantulas web up the ground where they live. Some more than others. So they all spin, technically, at least a little. The Fates are maybe a little too fancy for these guys. I'll keep that one in mind, though, if I should acquire something that feels fancy enough to merit it.

Yakko, Wakko & Dot?
Heh. That's worth considering for sure.

Nezznar, Raja Rudatha, and Fugleederkopp.
These guys aren't evil enough. They're cute and fun and should be pretty docile. I'd need way nastier spiders to carry those names.

Ungoliant, Shelob, & Saenathra?
I try to stay away from Ungoliant, Shelob, Aragog and associated names. They're super common. Well, common among tarantula nerds anyway.

I was thinking of riffing on Anansi/Nancy. See above for my general avoidance of Charlotte, Shelob and Aragog.

Leg warmer performers is a good idea. Cyndi Lauper and Madonna also sported them at one time or another.

These are great ideas, everyone. Thanks!

Besides, I already suggested 80's leg-warmer-performers (as truemane put it, and I think that's funnier than leg-warmer-wearers). Most of them are not spiders. At least not that we're aware of...

You're not wrong. I have SO MANY spiders. I buy them and sell them all the time, so I've got what you might call a constantly rotating cast. And I've sworn a mighty oath to myself that I won't have more than fit on the shelves in my walk-in closet.

But the fact that I've converted my walk-in closet to a temperature and humidity controlled spider conservatory, is proof enough that might have a problem.

But it's basically a motto for the men in my family that anything worth doing is worth overdoing. Ask about my father and his handguns someday.

"Velocity" is even more fun because her genus, Tapinauchenius, are maybe the fastest tarantula in existence. They bolt so fast they seem like they're teleporting. I had a Huntsman spider once that was faster, I think, but that's it.

Fun Fact: Orange Baboon Tarantula is abbreviated OBT, which then is nicknamed Orange Bitey Thing. They're known for being aggressive and twitchy. Cheeto is pretty chill, all in all.

His enclosure is pretty cool, though. They're heavy webbers.

The term associated with Senpai is Kohai (https://www.japanpowered.com/japan-culture/chan-kun-senpai-japanese-honorifics), so you would probably want Kumo-sempai, kumo-kohai and possibly kumo-san. If you believe you should be treating the spider with respect, kumo-sama. Kumo means spider, obviously.

Portia, Viola and Bianca? (From Children of Time, an award-winning bit of sci-fi which also has some characterful spiders... although iirc there may have been some punning on the name of a different spider species in these names).

This is a thread from over a month ago, but I just saw it so I am going to post my suggestion anyway:

Rico, Carmen and Dizzy. (https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNWExNzg3MmMtYjc3MS00MzFlLWJiOWQtNWYxZTgxNjhlZT Q2XkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNzkwMjQ5NzM@._V1_.jpg)

I was actually considering this. But, as everyone knows, Tomnoddy is insulting to anybody.

Or a very small dig Killer.
For several years from the time he was 16 till he died at 22 I lived with an originally 3 toothed but soon no-toothed chihuahua named. Cujo.
I swear he lived off attention and love more than the catfood we fed him and barked maybe 3 times in those 6 years....but would quack if you tried to sit on him.

as for the spiders I figure a good theme would be famous tap-dancers or Irish step dancers in the vein of lots of tapping feet.
