This sensation is somehow worse than when you first started this game, as if your very being has been run through a sieve and only roughly put back together in not quite the right order.

Deadguy

I broke it. That's the only thing Ssrask can think of as he quickly closed the window again. The feats he wanted to change hadn't changed, but it seemed like the third level of dragon shaman was computed, even if it was all wacked.

What are these green specks... Siri said you take on some of the core's corruption, is that it?

Deadguy
2020-08-21, 06:50 PM
Ssrask left his companion in the forest, using his wings to glide as far into the fields as possible. As he ran back to the mountains, if he saw any rabbits, he'd dive into them with his energy aura active in order to freeze them and get more meat.

Back at his cave, he'd eat enough to be full, but leave his pool water for the morning.

Hey Siri... how long has this world been active? Also, who are the prime deities? It didn't sound like the Tree Spirit was a major player in the world, unless divine beings were actually very rare.

Hey! Listen!

The world has been around since the beginning! That's when it was created.

Hey! Listen!

The Mother, a minor deity, is the patron spirit of The Venomous Grove!

You make it back safely.

Ssrask held a claw up to his temple. Speaking to someone who wasn't from the game made him forget that the things in the game didn't really see the game as a game.

Once he had eaten, he checked the cliff face that was outside his cave. He planned on a new set of binds the next day and wanted to get the most use of out these now. With the remainder of the day, he set out to climb up the mountain as high as he could.

Utilizing the climb speed from Claws of the Wyrm totem bind and ability to take no damage from a fall of any distance from Dragon Wings to progress up the cliff face.

Rizban
2020-08-31, 05:09 PM
You reach the top of the cliff and immediately receive a notification.

System Notice

Warning! You have entered an Advanced Difficulty area.

The clifftop is surprisingly flat in a very large area, more mesa than mountain. The flat area seems almost large enough to build a small city. The edges are surrounded by more mountains, forming natural walls.

About a quarter mile away, towards the center of the plateau, you can see what appears to be a small stone building lying in ruin.

Deadguy
2020-09-01, 08:11 AM
I don't have any real reason to risk a quick death other than curiosity... Hey Siri, when the warning for Advanced Difficulty appears, what level is it referring to?

Ssrask doesn't approach any closer to the ruins. In fact, he leaps from the cliff, entering a free fall for the brief moments before opening his wings and gliding to the ground. Once there's he'd go into his cave and rest for the evening, eating enough to be full, but making sure to leave a last morning meal before going back to meet the elf.

Hey! Listen!

You seem to be trying to determine Difficulty Levels.
Let me help you with that!
At times, the System may warn you about the average Difficulty Level of an area, though it does not always provide a warning, especially if you have been to that area before. The System expects you to learn and remember such information. Sometimes, only select members of a party or other group will receive a warning, based on the unknowable prerequisites of the System.
Note that Difficulty Levels are commonly considered Subjective and Inexact. Difficulty Levels are always determined relative to the effective level of the individual who receives the warning.
These levels are usually explained as follows:

Trivial areas are less than half your Effective Character Level
Easy areas are more than half your Effective Character Level but less than Average
Average areas are within a few levels of your ECL
Challenging areas are 3 to 10 levels higher than your ECL
Advanced areas are 7 to 15 levels higher than your ECL
Arduous areas are 11 to 20 levels higher than your ECL
Onerous areas are 15 to 25 levels higher than your ECL
Overwhelming areas are 20 or more levels higher than your ECL

Be aware that all areas may have challenges not appropriate to the rating for that area! For example, an area filled with numerous 1/10 Challenge Rating creatures and only a single CR 30 creature may have a rating of Trivial or Easy.

Deadguy
2020-09-01, 03:21 PM
Ssrask seemed surprised with how detailed that explanation was, and very glad he hadn't gotten too nosy. A CR difference of seven levels could probably kill him in a round or two. It was good to know the area was there though, as it seemed like the forest could sustain him for only so long.

Also, he was almost sure that no normal person in the realm would interact with him quite as calmly as the other player characters had. That meant he'd pretty much be confined to wilderness. The closeness also made resting once he was within that level range fairly easy by utilizing his cave.

He needed to rest, rebind his spiritual gifts, and meet with his teammate early in the morning. Once back in the cave, he settled down on his grass mat to sleep.

In the morning, he awoke and stretched. He took time to shape new melds before drinking from the pool and eating the last of his cooked rabbit.

Deadguy

Ssrask selects Ranger, but also makes sure to voice his desires aloud to Siri.

"Siri, I want to select alternate abilities for this class. Specifically, form shifter replacing combat style, arcane hunter replacing favored enemy 1, solitary hunting replacing animal companion, and champion of the wild replacing spells."

He was sure some of these weren't immediately available at level 1, just like his desire for Dungeon Crasher, but he still felt like he shouldn't assume anything in this process.

Ssrask paused. He thought he knew that Dungeon Crasher was an easy pick, but the Draconic Prowess peaked his interest.

"Siri can you give me information on Draconic Prowess?"

He was also a bit surprised that there had been no ability increase for this level. There had been one for every other selection. Perhaps once one went beyond secondary, they weren't provided every single level... He'd have to plan better to meet requirements for feats and such.

Rizban
2020-12-08, 02:15 PM
Hey! Listen!

You seem to be trying to learn more about the Draconic Prowess alternative class feature.
Let me help you with that!
Draconic Prowess allows you to choose a Draconic Feat in place of a Fighter bonus feat at any even numbered class level. It also replaces some of the abilities gained at odd-numbered Fighter levels with dragon-related benefits.

Deadguy
2020-12-08, 02:25 PM
"Wait... what? Fighters don't have... didn't have any abilities on odd levels. Siri, can you tell me what the abilities are that will be replaced?"

He wasn't exactly sure he needed even more draconic feats, and wasn't fully ready to commit to giving up some mystery abilities for other mystery abilities.

Rizban
2020-12-08, 04:33 PM
Hey! Listen!
Draconic Prowess forces the choice of a unique Combat Focus, which replaces the options for abilities gained at levels three, five, nine, and fifteen.
In addition, the Armor Mastery ability gained at levels seven, thirteen, and nineteen is modified by Draconic Prowess.
Draconic Prowess may be selected as a 2nd- or 3rd-level Fighter.

Ssrask left the grove alone as the shadows began to grow long. Despite having partied for the better part of his time in this world, the fact that he could continue without reservation in his own abilities while those he had teamed up with had to stop to regain strength made him feel... Pride?

There wasn't much of that feeling in his life before this. He was just a regular non-descript guy trying to make a life in the big city. Just one of the masses. I stand out here. I like it!

He followed his own trail back to the last tree, projecting the magical cold energy that coursed through his veins outward once again. As prepared as he could be, the dragonkin made a quick survey of the distance to the next tree and set out in a circular pattern to find the third.

Rizban

You arrive at the dead tree and follow the path that you are more or less certain is the right one to get where you need to go, and you soon encounter another group of spiders.

You stumble upon them, seemingly catching them by surprise.

There's one Huge spider accompanied by two Medium spiders and a host of Tiny spiders that you don't quite have time to count.

You get a surprise round, and you also win Initiative.

Deadguy

I wonder if the game is responding to us getting stronger. I donÂ’t think a huge spider would be in a starting zone quest... a good limit test at least.

Using the surprise to his advantage, he moved into melee with the huge spider, relying on his aura to kill off the smaller threats.

On his actual turn, he tapped into the primal dragon lineage to bolster his toughness before a full attack routine.

As you contemplate the game responding to your increasing strength, it occurs to you that it might also be responding to the level of progress on the quest. You recall that quest chains like this that constantly added new objectives always got harder as you completed individual steps and got closer to completion. You just hope that you don't reach a link in the chain that's too strong for your level...

You move in and attack the huge spider. Your first claw skitters across the surface of its chitin, doing little more than scuffing the surface. Thankfully, the rest of your attacks pierce its tough hide for 25 total damage. The spider screams in pain before it starts to freeze and tries to retaliate.

[roll0]

Just so I don't forget it in the future, please just roll your energy aura damage at the end of your post, and I'll apply the damage to any creature in range at the start of their turns.

It tries to raise itself up to attack from above, lending additional power to its bite, but the biting cold saps the last of its endurance, causing it to collapse under its own weight.

Ssrask took stock of the situation. I panicked. It was clear that his body and build were good enough to hold up against such threats, or maybe it was his luck that held up. He pondered the thought as he cleaned the webbing from his body and searched the dead bodies for possible loot. If the poison had taken hold, I'd have been completely ineffective and they would have gotten me. I should reconsider my approach after we get through this part of the quest.

As it were, he still had a good amount of health left and was in top condition. Pushing to the trees seemed vital enough to risk further encounters, so after cleaning himself up and searching the corpses, he opened the advancement tab to check his options.

Ssrask wasn't sure if he was happy or upset about that. He definitely felt influenced to the more bloodthirsty aspects of his dragon heritage before. The change seemed to give him a bit more clarity and focus.

He selected 'Yes' to the level-up option, looking over his sheet to figure out the best way to proceed. He did notice that the feat he had selected as a ranger still existed, even though he no longer met the requirements. The last time he did something like that, the game had quite a spasm. Perhaps the editing process would allow him to adjust it during the level up.

As he moved forward, he couldn't help but wonder at why the universe might direct him toward a decision. It wasn't really a game, he had already established that. It was more like a reincarnation into a new reality. There were gods, there was good and evil, there was free will. The game was more like the universal laws of reality. A way to keep everything in order.

It felt strange that the system would desire him to be such an upstanding and orderly class, especially after having selected a simplistic, selfish, chaotic patron for his primary class. The two outlooks were really non-conducive to a heroic frame of mind.

"Siri, are there dragons from other planes that could be patrons for a dragon shaman?" He tried tapping into his skills, the ability that allowed him to gather information from this place even as a stranger in a strange land.

"Siri" doesn't seem to acknowledge your question. Whether that's from a lack of knowledge or for some other reason, you are unsure.

She then suddenly shouts Hey! Listen! while hovering over a rock about the size of your head before informing you that you can pick up and throw rocks when necessary.

Ssrask couldn't help but wonder if he'd made a mistake. Normally Siri talked in circles or gave him some sort of tangent information. This wasn't either of those, she simply skipped the topic entirely.

"Thank you." The dragonkin picked up the rock. It'd be useful to use against a threat if he got stuck in webbing. "Siri, what are ALL of the available options of Dragon Patron for a Dragon Shaman?"

He talked to her as he continued to move toward his goal of finding another binding tree to speed up their quest progress.

Hey! Listen!

Did you know that every dragon shaman has a patron dragon?

You did? Great!

Each patron dragon is also quasi-divine! That's how they are able to become the patron of a dragon shaman!

"Quasi-divine... that's why I don't come up with any information. I don't have an Knowledge: Religion yet."

"Siri, are there any methods to condense multiple bloodlines into a single line that matches both criteria. Something like Monsterous - Hag and Planar condensed to Night Hag? Or Dragon and Planar condensed to Hellfire Wyrm?"

Ssrask was very curious as to what could actually be awakened, and how far the boundaries of the system could be pushed. It did seem to bend slightly to his desires, but was also capable of altering the course of his progression to its own whims. Without any actual knowledge of religions or deity interaction, he'd almost say it was like an Over-God. Something removed from the struggles of belief and followers but responsible the rules that even those powerful beings has to abide by.

The assistant lazily flies in a circle above your head, failing to respond to your questions. After a few seconds, it seems to shrink as it zips down behind you and out of sight. You've noticed that it isn't always hanging around you, but this is the first time you've consciously noticed it disappearing.

Ssrask couldn't help but feel like something was being kept from him. His guide hadn't ever simply remained silent, even when the information wasn't what he wanted. Still, without the requisite knowledge, there was little he could do to push forward in his quest for the information.

He left well enough alone for the moment and continued on, hoping to come across one of the spider-infested trees before dawn.
