Few expected The Neverenes to invade Luskan, fewer still expected the invasion to end so quickly. In the end, the City of Sails became a city enslaved; existing solely to provide luxuries to its new master.

The Luskar weren’t pleased with the new way of things, but the grip of Lord Neverember was iron-clad. Many fled into the Neverwinter Wood, where the Luskar Resistance movement hid, plotting in vain to retake their city. Others fled to sea, only to find that the sea of Swords now belonged to the longships of Icewind Dale. Most however, for one reason or another, stayed in the city under the Neverens’ harsh rule; a rule where even the smallest crime was sentenced with a lifetime of servitude in Neverwinter.

Which brings us to the beginning of our story aboard the LPS Frontier, a cargo ship retrofitted to carry a load of prisoners to Neverwinter. While the majority of its human cargo are chained up in the hold, a small group of prisoners have earned themselves the dubious honor of being locked up in the ship’s brig, on the lowest deck.

Two pirates, a half-elf and a tortle, a kenku warrior, a tabaxi thief, a member of the Luskar Resistance, a mute tiefling, and an aged Icewind cleric.

https://i.imgur.com/pTPy6hq.png

Your cells are positioned on the bottom deck of the ship, across from various crates of food and supplies for the journey.

The past three days have been boring, to say the least. Aside from the brief interlude when they brought down a well-beaten tabaxi named Scrape to join the rest of you and your daily ration of watered-down porridge, the only thing you’ve had to break the doldrum was chatting amongst yourselves.

That all changed though about half an hour ago. What began as mere shouting from the decks above you soon escalated into frequent thumps against the hull. Now, you can hear the sounds of fighting above you.

The commotion has drawn all of you to the bars of your cells, and you wait with baited breath.

CRUNCH

Whether it was through pure luck, or the favor of the gods that you all happened to be standing away from the wall, we may never know, but it was fortunate that you were as a massive wedge of steel forced its way through the Frientier’s wooden hull between where the tortle and tiefling stood, showering all of you with splintered wood and mangling the iron bars of the cells.

Not hesitating a bit, the tiefling squeezes his way through a gap in the cage and disappeared down the hall and up the nearby staircase. For the rest of you, only a twisted mass of iron, barely bolted to the hull, stands between you and freedom.

Seeing the hunk of metal breech the wall of the ship, and the iron bars twist so that the cages become useless, Scrape watches the Tiefling escape and decides to join him.

"Well, Polluck, it looks like we don't need to steal the keys or breaks the bars. Let's all go upstairs and see what this commotion is. If the ship is being attacked, maybe we can help the attackers and earn our freedom."

He slips out of his cage and looks to the others to see if they need any help getting past the bars.

As the wedge of steel plows through the hull, Xyrryn and her mermaid crew member Waverly are almost rocked off their feet, only managing to stay standing by leaning on each other for support. The ghost (I'm sure that took everyone some getting used to) Grimhild, who had been inspecting the interior of the crates and barrels with the assumption she'd need a catalog of the ship they would most likely be taking over, turns around in surprise. Salt, the well muscled water genasi, stood still in surprise for a few moments before seeing the others wriggle their way through their cages. Seeing that he wrenched what he could out of the way, holding it open for Xyrryn and Waverly to get out before he did himself.

"Thank you Salt. Do you think you can help that one out of their cage as well? I don't know what the tiefling was thinking, but unless we plan to dive into unknown waters we're going to need to rely on each other." Xyrryn says and indicates the cleric's cage.

Salt nods and replies, "O'course Captain." and goes to bend or lift or pull what he can to get the cleric free.

"Ahhhh, freedom!" Waverly sighs more than says.

"Grimhild, why don't you help our kenku friend scout?" Xyrryn says to the ghost, who understands it to be a command and doesn't even waste time replying and just goes to do it.

"Well, that worked better than any of my ideas," says Pollock as he extricates himself from the wreckage of the cages. Scanning around the debris for a improvised weapon, he settles on a long piece of metal which he holds like a spear. You notice that unlike everyone else, the Tortle somehow seems as comfortable with his hunk of metal as a master smith with his hammer. As he maneuvers to the front of the column he says "This'll work well enough, but if anyone sees the galley as we go up, let's stop in for some actual knives...and hopefully a cast iron skillet."

Seeing everyone get out of their cages and start to charge up the stairs, Scrape recommends caution.

"Wait! The rat I was talking to isn't a rat. His name is Kapa. He can turn invisible and I can see through his eyes. Let's have him go up and see what's going on."

A small, red humanoid with a long tail with a stinger on the end appears next to Scrape. "Hi Kapa. Go look upstairs for us." Without saying anything, the tiny demon disappears before your eyes.

Scrape then turns to the old man, "You'll be safer down here for now. Once we secure the ship, we'll come back and free you."

Sends familiar up the stairs and looks through its eyes.

The old man gives Scrape a large, toothless grin, then presses his shoulders against the bars of his cage and with a mighty shove, separates the remains of the cage from the wall of the ship.

"Safe? SAFE? Young whelp, you speak to a chosen cleric of Tempus!" He picks up a wooden plank from the deck and pricks his finger with one of the nails protruding from it. "To battle my friends! 'Tis a good day to die!" Waving it above his head, he charges up the stairs right past Sword.

"Not a word from him for 3 days and now all this energy. I love it! I only saw the deck above us, and it is mostly empty. Most of the slaves are gone, but some are fighting off the crew. I saw 9 unarmed prisoners and 5 sailors armed with clubs. Should we help the prisoners above us or move past them to get to the deck?"

As your group charges up the stairs, one of the crew members points at you and begins shouting. He and two others break away from the melee to engage you.

Combat starts, the players move first.

Your opponents are 20 ft. away from you and packed tightly together, there's no way to get around them as the narrow confines of the ship block any attempts to pass them.

The other prisoners and slavers are another 20 ft. beyond your opponents and are too busy with each other to interfere. The staircase to the next level is 30 ft. beyond them.

Sword is going to look to move into a position that will grant flanking to someone else, or respond to another person setting up a flanking position. In that way he’ll mitigate the effects of Exhaustion for another person.

He will then use Fighting Spirit to grant himself advantage as a bonus action, and give himself 5 bonus HP. He’ll attack the one he is set up to attack. Since I don’t know the weapon stats, I’ll leave that off.

Attack Roll - [roll0] without disadvantage because of Fighting Spirit

"Ah, the welcome party!" Xyrryn says loudly enough to draw attention to her. "Well I suppose I should give myself a proper introduction." as she says this a twisted grin appears on her face and she stares down the closest one of their assailants, letting her anger fill up her song.

As she sings in the background her crew adds extra instrumental oomph to the song. Grimhild plays a spectral violin, Waverly uses her unusual aquatic vocal to imitate something like a cello while occasionally banging two metal objects together to approximate cymbals, and Salt just stomps the floor or pounds the walls for percussion. Which certainly doesn't make the song less intimidating.

An extended version of this, so that it'll probably last maybe the whole ship fight. Depending on how long this takes and if I find a more appropriate song for a change in situation.

Zahnan sets to work quickly with his new tools, carving a small magical cannon out of wood and commanding it to fire at the guard in the back.
At 3rd level, you learn how to create a magical cannon. Using woodcarver's tools or smith's tools, you can take an action to magically create a Small or Tiny eldritch cannon in an unoccupied space on a horizontal surface within 5 feet of you. A Small eldritch cannon occupies its space, and a Tiny one can be held in one hand.
Once you create a cannon, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest or until you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher. You can have only one cannon at a time and can't create one while your cannon is present.
The cannon is a magical object. Regardless of size, the cannon has an AC of 18 and a number of hit points equal to five times your artificer level. It is immune to poison damage, psychic damage, and all conditions. If it is forced to make an ability check or a saving throw, treat all its ability scores as 10 (+0). If the mending spell is cast on it, it regains 2d6 hit points. It disappears if it is reduced to 0 hit points or after 1 hour. You can dismiss it early as an action.
When you create the cannon, you determine its appearance and whether it has legs. You also decide which type it is, choosing from the options on the Eldritch Cannons table. On each of your turns, you can take a bonus action to cause the cannon to activate if you are within 60 feet of it. As part of the same bonus action, you can direct the cannon to walk or climb up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space, provided it has legs.
Eldritch Cannons
Cannon Activation
Flamethrower The cannon exhales fire in an adjacent 15-foot cone that you designate. Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, taking 2d8 fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried.
Force Ballista Make a ranged spell attack, originating from the cannon, at one creature or object within 120 feet of it. On a hit, the target takes 2d8 force damage, and if the target is a creature, it is pushed up to 5 feet away from the cannon.
Protector The cannon emits a burst of positive energy that grants itself and each creature of your choice within 10 feet of it a number of temporary hit points equal to 1d8 + your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1).

Sword opens the fight by closing the distance, low and fast, then swoops up to the slaver in the center; striking with lightning speed, he whips right around the clumsy human’s attempts to block and lands two deft stabs in the man’s unarmored chest with the jagged shard of metal he was using as a makeshift dagger. The slaver shouts and tries to smack the kenku with his club, but barely raises it over his head before two bolts of unstable, crackling magic crash into his chest, sending him flying backwards.

Meanwhile, Pollock engages the cur on the left, thrusting out with his spear and landing it deep in the slaver’s shoulder. Using his momentum, the tortle reaches out to grab his opponent by the shirt, but the slaver gets the better of him and shoves Pollock off. Hardly one to be deterred, Pollock laughs and swings the spear around again, clocking him in the side of the head.

Seeing all this, Xyrryn fixes the man on the right with a wicked glance and begins her song. He seems more confused than discouraged, but does seem to be gripping his weapon less tightly.

As his friends are fighting, Zahnan seems to have found exactly what he’s looking for: a set of Woodcarver’s tools. In short order he creates a miniature cannon on the ground next to him and with a smirk, points at the unlucky rube who had just been brutalized by Scrape and Sword. With a roar, the cannon fires. The sailor glances down at the new hole in his chest before collapsing forward.

The center slaver is dead, the left is bloodied, the right has no visible wounds, but is blinking furiously, as if trying to ward off a headache,

Not initially noticing their newly dead comrade, the slavers begin swinging at their enemies. The leftmost one swings at Pollock, smacking the tortle twice with his club; the first glances off the tortle's shell, wile the second finds purchase. The second slaver lashes out none-too-confidently twice at Sword, but only hits air as the kenku easily dances around the strikes.

With an almost arrogant chuckle, Pollock retaliates by thrusting his makeshift spear into his opponents thigh, then follows it up with a powerful haymaker to the slavers temple. Eyes immediately glazing over, the slaver falls like a sack of flour, completely limp, knocked out cold on his feet.

At the same instant, Sword gracefully slips around to the back of his target, leaving an opening for the tortle to bound over to where the kenku once stood. Pollock opens up with a swift kick to the sack, while Sword plunges his dagger into the slaver’s back.

Half-panicked, the slaver makes the critical mistake of stumbles sideways, leaving himself wide open. Two shimmering lights, like whips of crystal clear living water snake their way out of Scrapes outstretched hand, leaving a misty cloud as they pass, and strike him in the torso. His chest bursts like a ripe melon, and he falls too, the light gone from his eyes.

As you glance around you, you realize that you’re all alone on the deck. The other prisoners, having subdued their captors, have escaped above.

From above, Kappa reports: the majority of the fighting has moved to the top deck of the ship, but a few stragglers still remain above.

As you move up to the next deck, you notice that Kappa left out a rather significant detail in his report: parts of the ceiling were on fire, and the room was starting to fill with smoke.

There are plenty of bodies strewn about, some unconscious and some dead, and from the spilled rations on the floor and the relatively even numbers of prisoner and crewmember bodies, it seems like the fighting started when the crew was sitting down for a meal.

The fighting seems to end as you appear, a small group of prisoners on the far side of the room disappears to the top deck, while another group of slavers finishes their scuffle with a dragonborn prisoner by cracking his skull open with their clubs.

Bruised and bleeding, they turn to you wearily, weapons raised for a fight, but hesitating.

Four slavers thirty feet away. Three of them, two humans and a dwarf are bloodied. The fourth, a wood elf, is hurt, but not yet bloodied.

Lowering his weapon and putting his other hand up in a non-threatening gesture, Pollock yells to the sailors "You've got two mates still alive and unconscious on the next deck down, plus these one's up here; stow your clubs and we'll let you save them, or risk losing to us and condemn them to burn alive."

The sounds of fighting are ringing ever louder from above.

Kappa reports that there is a melee on the top deck. The prisoners are fighting the slavers, who are fighting a group of Icewind raiders and several fires have broken out. The slavers seem to be winning , or at least holding their own and he recommends you join the fight soon.

Yelling after the retreating sailors, Pollock bellows"Ugh, I said throw down your arms and help your mates, not run like cowards!" Turning to the group he says "I'm not leaving anyone to burn alive, slaver or not. I'm going down to get those two we left; I'd appreciate it if you all checked up here for any survivors before we press on." And with that he ducks back down the stairs at top speed.

As the group approaches the stairs, they are forced to stop short as a pair of combatants tumbles down, landing hard on the deck. A slaver, wielding a light crossbow lies lifeless, his chest impaled with a pair of shortsworts held by one of the Icewind raiders. The raider grins at the group, blood pouring between his teeth before rolling off of his victim with a death rattle, revealing a pair of bolt shafts protruding from his chest.

The group quickly gathers up and passes out the weapons along with a case carrying 17 additional bolts, before charging up to the top deck.

Now in the open air, the group has their first chance to truly survey the situation. Confirming Kappa’s reports, the Frontier was attacked by a pair of longships crewed by raiders from Icewind Dale. One of the ships rammed the Frontier, and got stuck, initiating a boarding action that the raiders didn’t seem quite prepared for. The slavers responded to the boarding of their own ship by boarding the raiders’ vessel, and now the fighting was on the deck of both ships. Further away, the second longship lashed itself to the stern of its sister and its crew joined the fray. Somehow, despite their lower numbers, the slavers seem to have the upper hand, and might have even won by now if it weren’t for the escape of the Frontier’s human cargo.

More pressing to our group however, is the action on the Frontier’s own deck. Utter chaos. There seem to be no true sides in the battle, as the prisoners, slavers, and raiders all vie for control of the deck. Occasionally, one of the combatants will abandon the fight, jumping into the water to try their luck swimming to shore a mile away.

Making matters worse, the mute tiefling the group was jailed with stands on the bow railing, hurling handfuls of fire at anyone and everyone, with little regard to the fact that the ship is built from very flammable wood.

Nearby the players, a group of four slavers is beating a pair of fallen prisoners, they are 10 feet away and have not yet noticed the player’s presence.

Pollock requires an additional turn to dash to reach the deck.

Happy to give all of the weapons to the others, Scrape makes his way above into the chaos. Upon reaching the deck, he decides to start defending the other prisoners as best he can. He yells to no one in particular, "Let's kill our slavers, protect the other prisoners, and try to help the raiders." Which of course is obvious to the party, but hopefully some of the prisoners and raiders hear him and don't attack us.

He first looks around to see if there are any slavers next to the edge of the ship or in the rigging that he might be able to knock off with his blasts. If he sees no opportunities for that, he sends his two blasts of shimmering, watery force at the slavers next to Sword, hopefully knocking them back.

Kapa, still invisible, looks for someone who might be a leader for the Icewinders, looking for an opportunity to help Xyrryn convince the raiders that we are on their side.

If Sword sees the opportunity to knock slavers off the ship with his repelling blast, he will do that. He would also look for a chance to knock any slavers out of the rigging above.

Otherwise, split the Eldritch Blasts on two of the slavers in front of us, Repelling Blast on both blasts to push 10' each, Lance of Lethargy on the first hit to slow it by 10'

Kapa stays invisible, looking for an opportunity to help Xyrryn. If Xyrryn tries to persuade people, Kapa will whisper in their ear things like "You should listen to her," or "That seems like a great idea."

For the next round, Scrape is also looking for an opportunity to use Gust of Wind (60' long 10' wide, STR save or pushed back 15'). As soon as he makes it to the top of the stairs, Zahnan fires both his crossbow and cannon at the nearest slaver without aiming, causing both to zing over the thug’s head. Sword, however, has better luck; he swoops in on the same slaver and drives both of his blades into the man’s back, cutting deep as the slaver howls in pain, dropping his weapon and falling to his knees.

Scrape, meanwhile, takes the opportunity to help out in the larger fray, and fires off a pair of Eldritch Blasts, each one knocking a slaver overboard.

Eschewing fighting for the moment, Xyrryn gives a rousing speech, attempting to bring the raiders and former prisoners together to drive the slavers off the ship. It doesn’t seem to have much effect, beyond making several of the closer raiders and prisoners seem to fight harder, and alerting the nearby slavers to the group’s presence.

The raiders turn towards the group, apparently deciding that they were the bigger threat than the two fallen prisoners. A fatal mistake, as one of the pair leaps to his feet, with the dropped club in hand. Winding up, he smashes it into the face of the slaver Sword had just mauled shortly before, sending the thug sprawling on the deck. The second, a halfling, jumps on the back of another, gripping for dear life.

The other three advance on the group, but one is punched harmlessly in the back of his head by a third prisoner and turns to bludgeon the man into submission. Of the two remaining, one rushes at Xyrryn and takes a swing, but the half-elf sidesteps deftly, causing him to only hit air. The other drives his club into Sword’s chest, but despite the solid blow, doesn’t seem to harm the kenku much.

As for the last, he struggles with the halfling, but isn’t able to dislodge his attacker.

Sword takes 4 bludgeoning damage on a critical hit.

Emerging from below deck, Pollock quickly takes in the scene. You hear him yell "Smoke bomb!" and make a throwing motion towards the three sided fray in the middle of the ship; immediately, a large black sphere of magical Darkness 30ft in diameter appears in the middle of the ship, so dark that not even those with darkvision can see into it's inky depths. Seeing that she didn't manage to do much to sway the crowd as a whole, Xyrryn decides to take a different tack and confront a problem individual. "I'm going to go deal with that mad tiefling." she announces to the others. Then impossibly black smokey darkness appears in her way. Sword, now having completely figured out the combat style of these slavers lashes out again, this time at the one who dared hit him. He rakes his shortswords across the thug’s chest, once. Twice. Three times, sending blood splattering across the deck and the slaver toppling over backwards.

As the brigand hit the deck, Pollock thundered up from the stairwell, casting a sphere of darkness into the center of the deck. The effect is immediate. Fighting inside the sphere all but ceases, as combatants on all three sides begin stumbling out of the inky black, some right over the side of the ship.

Meanwhile Scrape shot off two more Eldrich Blasts at the slaver swinging at Xyrryn. The first missed, but the second caught the bastard in the side of the head, sending him flying backwards. He hits the deck hard and stirs for a moment before laying still.

Seizing the opportunity she’s been looking for, Xyrryn bolts. Weaving through the crowd, she dances around yet another slavers club before diving into the darkness and emerging on the other side to scream at the tiefling.

Lastly, Zahnan lets loose once again with his crossbow, catching the slaver distracted by a fellow prisoner in the lower back, sending the man to his knee momentarily, while his cannon knocks another slaver off the edge of the deck.

The slaver shot by Zahnan wheels around to charge at his attacker, but is intercepted by Pollock. Deciding to settle for the tortle for now, he swings twice.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the deck, the tiefling grabs Xyrryn by the wrist and hurls her to the floorboards. Glowering at her as he hurls another handful of fire into the face of a nearby slaver, he then points towards the closer longboat. There, in the middle of the fighting, stands a figure in gleaming blue armor. Xyrryn recognizes him immediately as Mehmen Kalshi, the captain of the Frontier, a brutal man responsible for the horrid conditions aboard the ship.

Mehmen, wielding a black warhammer, is making short work of any raider he comes across, and it becomes immediately obvious as to why the slavers have the raiders against the ropes.

Xyrryn gives the tiefling a dirty look as she gets up and walks over, only as close as she needs to, for Mehmen Kalshi to be in range of her magic. She begins singing a song her mother picked up around Icewind Dale. Something that should be a familiar tune to the raiders as its a raiding song. She focuses the song's magic upon Mehmen Kalshi so that it might demoralize him or give him a sense of looming dread. She also sends some of the magic to their kenku ally, to bolster his endurance. Catching the shine of Mehman’s chain mail with his superior vision, Scape points him out, directing the party’s attention to the slaver captain fighting on the deck of the longship. He decides to finish off the slavers near him to focus on the leader of his hated foes. Firing off a pair of Eldritch Blasts, he catches the badly-wounded slaver engaging Pollock in the chest, ending his life, and hits the second- the one who was previously grappled- knocking him backwards.

Xyrryn, however, chooses to engage the captain immediately, singing a tune unfamiliar to him. It’s magical waves pummel him, causing him to momentarily stop fighting to clutch his head.

Sword summons every ounce of energy he’s saved up to perform a flying leap over to the longship, and closes the distance to one of Mehman’s bodyguards and lays into him with a vicious pair of attacks. He is soon joined by Pollock, who leaps to the other ship, but doesn’t land quite so gracefully. He stumbles, but pushes himself back up, ready to charge in.

Zahnan continues to hammer away with his crossbow, slaying the slaver who dared shoot him, his cannon knocking the formerly grappled slaver off the side of the deck.

With the deck immediately surrounding the group mostly cleared, they can now focus their full attention on their true target.

Mehman’s bodyguards finish off the raiders they were fighting quickly. Of the two Sword was fighting, one lands the killing blow, while the other turns to attack the kenku, but is deftly parried by the fighter. The other two kill their target, then join their master at his side.

Mehmant himself pummels his victim, then spins around to find the source of the assault on his psyche. He first sports Sword, then notices Xyrryn and the rest glaring at him from the deck of the Frontier

Out of nowhere, a gale kicks up, blowing outward from Scrape. Catching the group of slavers head-on, it lifts three of Mehman’s bodyguards off of the deck and dumps them overboard. The forth manages to hold on, but only momentarily before one of Zahnan’s bolts plants itself square in his forehead.

Xyrryn, continues her song, pummeling the slaver captain’s psyche as he grits his teeth, while Sword lands a solid blow with his sword. The reprieve is brief, as Mehman is able to gather his wits and deflect the next two blows with his armor. He barely has time to breathe before Pollock jumps in with three blows of his own, the first two glancing off the chain ineffectively, but the last finds purchase. He takes a step back before being blasted by Zahnan’s cannon.

”Enough! You will submit!” Mehman bellows across the deck. He raises his hammer over his head, eyes glowing red, as black fog begins to roll off of him.

All creatures within 10’ of Mehman (which are just Sword and Pollock, at the moment) must make a DC15 Wisdom saving throw, or become frightened of him for 1 minute. The frightened creature can repeat this saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

While frightened, their movement speed is zero if they are within 10’ of Mehman.

After looking around and seeing that the way is clear, Scrape moves along the railing to the spot where the bow of the longship hits the galley. Waiting until after Sword and Polluck attack, he then moves the gust of wind so that it catches the Captain and blows right down the middle of the longship, trying to keep Sword and Polluck out of the blast.

"Sword, Polluck, look out!" Two blasts of watery force then leave Scrape's hands and fly towards the captain. Kapa stays up in the air about 60', staying invisible and keeping an eye out for any threats to Scrape and Zahnan, peering onto the darkness with his devil's sight.

Range: Self (60-foot line)
Components: V, S, M (a legume seed)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

A line of strong wind 60 feet long and 10 feet wide blasts from you in a direction you choose for the spell’s duration. Each creature that starts its turn in the line must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed 15 feet away from you in a direction following the line.

Any creature in the line must spend 2 feet of movement for every 1 foot it moves when moving closer to you.

The gust disperses gas or vapor, and it extinguishes candles, torches, and similar unprotected flames in the area. It causes protected flames, such as those of lanterns, to dance wildly and has a 50 percent chance to extinguish them.

It takes two attempts, but Pollock manages to shove Mehman to the ground, then smacks him again with the iron bar. Sword swoops in to stab at the slaver captain, plunging his sword into the brute twice. Scrape fires off a pair of Eldritch Blasts but both miss.

Meanwhile, on the Frontier, more people have stumbled out of the darkness and are revving up to fight again. Xyrryn, deftly palming a sword off the ground, moves in to attack one of the two nearest to her, but he notices her approach and dips away at the last second. Zahnan fires off another crossbow/cannon combo, the bolt lodging itself firmly in the shoulder of a nearby slaver, while the cannon knocks a second back into the darkness.

The slaver Zahnan shot ceases his pummeling of a downed raider and stumbles towards the Artificer, weapon raised. 10 feet away, he seems to have a change of heart and drops his weapon, falling to his knees to nurse his wound. A third, battered slaver charges at Zahnan, swinging his club at the cannon, but it bounces off the contraption harmlessly.

Kapa looks into the darkness and tells Scrape what he sees, "Look out, the slavers are starting to come out. Xyrryn could use some help on the other side of the darkness."

Scrape runs to the nearest mast and climbs up it, using his Tabaxi speed and claws to get above the darkness spell. Once he is out of melee reach and above the darkness spell, he sees the trouble Xyrryn is in and shoots his eldritch blasts at the two slavers, hoping to knock them off. He then aims the gust of wind to hit one or two of the slavers and hopefully push them overboard.

Cat's claws give a 20' climb speed, and then feline agility can double speed (cannot use again until he spends one round at 0' movement), so he should be able to move to the mast and climb at least 20'.

He uses his action to cast Eldritch Blast on the two slavers around Xyrryn, using Lance of Lethargy on the one farthest from the edge to reduce its speed by 10'.

Since he is elevated, the target area becomes a 10' wide, likely 20-30' long oval instead of a line as the round line hits the deck at an angle. If either of the slavers around Xyrryn are still up, hit one of them first, otherwise, any spot where he might be able to knock one or two slavers off without hitting anyone else is fine.

An ear-splitting sound fills the air as Mehman’s head rolls across the deck,a fountain of crimson energy pouring out of his body. The corpse seems to age a century in three seconds as it dessicates before Sword and Pollock’s very eyes.

Sword and Pollock take [roll0] Thunder damage.

Then, quickly as it began, silence covered the sea, a complete, suffocating silence. It only last a few seconds before a cacophony of clatters, as the remaining slavers drop their weapons, surrendering to whomever is closest.

The Battle of the LPS Frontier is over.

Allowing the raiders and prisoners to secure the now disarmed slavers, Xyyryn, Scrape, and Zahnan make their way over to Sword and Pollock, all of them staring at the mangled carcass.

”Ha! And how!” The startled group glanced upward to see the cleric that had been imprisoned with them emerging from below deck. He approaches them arms wide open. ”Aye, well fought! A wondrous day, indeed! Lord Tempus truly blessed us. Three days I spent praying for his aid, and not only did he send us rescue, he also sent us glorious battle! Would only that he took me to his side as well! Apologies for my disappearance, but I had to retrieve my spare holy symbol.”

He pauses briefly, smiling wide. ”Ah, but we have not been introduced! I am Sigfred Blodox! This ship we stand on is Ragskal.” He leans forward with a grin. ”And she is mine. That one to the stern is Anskaar, and she is captained by my younger brother!’ He stops and scratches his chin. ”Or at least she was, until some lout lopped his head off and shoved him o’erboard not two minutes ago.”

He sighs, performing a holy sign in the air. His demeanor changes and he adopts a business-like tone. ”Now, my friends, I have a proposal for you. I would estimate we have mayhaps an hour before a Neveren patrol finds us, so we must act fast. As the only living relative within… well, miles of here, I give to the five of you Anskaar. A worthy prize for the slaying of a very wretched man.” He pauses as a few of the raiders give an at first confused round of applause, that grows louder rather quickly.

After taking a moment to spit on Mehman’s decapitated head, he kneels down to pull a key off of the body and tosses it to Sword. ”As I said, we have not much time; I suggest we plunder what we can from that floating wreck and scuttle her. I’ll send some of the men into the hold to grab whatever supplies they can. I suggest you lot strip the corpse and make your way to the captain’s cabin!”

Scrape is late getting over to the Ragskal so misses some of the cleric's speech. When the raiders start to explore for loot on the Frontier, Scrape goes with them, not to steal any of their cargo, but to evaluate the men to see who he might want to try to recruit for our crew. He asks a various members of both the raiders and the slavers a few questions trying to determine who we might want to recruit. "Where are you from? How did you join this crew? How do you like working for Sigfred? What was his brother like? How is the Anskar?" or "Why are you on a slaving ship?"

Kapa meanwhile, stays invisible and silent and eavesdrops on Sigfred, trying to see what kind of man he is and what his plans are for both ships.

"A pleasure to meet you Sigfred Blodox. I'm Captain Xyrryn Sapphirica, formerly of the Gold Night before these Neveren bastards sank it. My crew and I thank you for your aid in our escape. You make a generous offer, though I had been hoping to see if this ship could be taken and repaired. I'd have to check how much damage she's taken, but I believe we could at least get her beached." Xyrryn replies and offers a hand for Sigfred to shake.

Pollock begins to loot Mehman’s corpse, but all he seems to have on him aside from his hammer and chainmail are a pair of rings etched in elven script, two potions (one red, one cloudy green) and a damaged wand. The tortle examines them briefly before setting them in a neat pile at the stern of the Ragskal before heaving Mehman's corpse overboard and clambering over to the Frontier to join his companions in tossing the captain’s cabin.

Siegfried grasps Xyrryn’s outstretched hand and gives it a vigorous shake, his grip is strong despite his age. He gestures for her to follow and walks over to the side of the ship, directing his raiders to begin looting the Frontier and to fish any survivors out of the water. ”You may do as you wish, but I intend to be long gone before any Neverens show up. I have business in Waterdeep that cannot be delayed again. Shames me to say ‘no’ to a fight, but a smart warrior knows to let themselves recover between scraps.’

Reaching one of his downed raiders, he kneels down to examine the wound. Placing his hand over it, he mutters something under his breath and the laceration stitches itself closed. ”I’m of the opinion that we should simply burn it to prevent the Neverens from taking it back, but again, your choice.’ he stands back up and presses a folded map into her hands. ”If you get away, make heading for Cloudwatch Isle and tell them I sent you. If not… burn this ‘fore they nab you. Now, I must see to my crew.”

Meanwhile, Sword and Zahnan begin tearing apart Mehman’s quarters, looking for anything of value, and are shortly joined by Pollock. The cabin is exquisitely furnished, with silk sheets and down pillows on the bed, a cherrywood wardrobe, a velvet easy chair, a finely-woven throw rug, and a wyvern head mounted on the port wall over a walnut desk. All indications point to a man who valued luxury above all else.

After pouring over the bed and wardrobe to find little outside of some expensive silk clothing and three bottles of alcohol (that Pollock identifies with a quick whiff as a medium-priced brandy), they move to the desk to continue their search.

Here they strike metaphorical gold. In a trove of documents, they find multiple maps of the Sea of swords, a pile of invoices, an odd drawing, a bag of pearls, a spyglass, and a set of Navigator’s Tools.

Glancing over the drawing, Zahnan is quickly able to deduce that it is the schematic for some kind of siege weapon. Unfortunately, the drawing is crude, likely done by hand, and he would need to redraw it with his superior skills to make much sense of it.

Most of the invoices are for expensive foodstuffs, but down near the bottom is a receipt confirming that Mehman sold a number of items to one of Luskan’s most seedy pawnbrokers. Going over the list, Sword immediately recognizes the sold items as the very things confiscated from him during his arrest.

While talking with the prisoners, slavers, and raiders, Scrape discovers the following things:

Raiders:

They hail almost entirely from Icewind Dale. Most of them aren’t seasoned warriors, but fishermen and merchant mariners and joined up with the raiding fleets at the prospect of coin and glory.
Sigfried is widely considered a great sailor and a warrior of great prowess, but they wish he wasn’t so reckless. Overall, they like him as a captain and say he treats them fairly and ensures that they all get their fair share of any loot.
Sigfried’s younger brother Herald was very similar to his brother, but wasn’t a cleric. Rumors say he was jealous of Sigfried’s connection to Lord Tempus.
The sailors of the Anskaar have accepted its new ownership and respect the group for their skill and bravery in the fight, but warn that they are somewhat skeptical of non-Icewinders and will be quick to mutiny if they feel you treat them unfairly.
The Anskaar is a good, solid ship of immaculate construction, but was somewhat neglected by its late captain. With coin and a proper shipwright, it could become one of the fastest and deadliest ships on the Sea of Swords.

Prisoners

Nearly all of them are pirates or petty criminals who were in Luskan at the time of the Neveren attack.
Over half of them have some sailing experience, most of the rest are willing to learn.
A few of them wish to simply flee and had planned to turn the Frontier to the shore and beach it so they could escape into the Neverwinter Wood.

Slavers

The slavers are a mix of dwarves, elves, and humans of varying ethnicities.
Around half of them are mercenaries who signed on with Mehman to make some quick coin. The rest are Neveren and Luskar sailors pressed into service and had been told that desertion would mean hanging while obedience would mean wealth and freedom at the end of their impressment.
Opinion of the job among the mercenaries is varied. Some didn’t know what the job entailed and are a bit ashamed, but didn’t want to desert for various reasons. Others knew and didn’t care. Others still had some grudge against Luskan or people associated with it and saw this as a means to strike back.
They were all terrified of Mehman.

After his talk with Xyrryn, Siegfried began wandering the deck of the Ragskal, jumping between organizing the looting and rescue operations, and tending to the medical needs of anyone he comes across, regardless of affiliation.

He congratulates all he passes on a battle well fought, complimenting any visible injuries.

His bedside manner could use some work. Particularly grievous wounds he’ll heal with magic, but anything else he treats with nothing more than disinfectant and a quick suture, claiming that “naturally healed wounds make better scars!”

Sword thrusts a finger urgently at the piece of paper, calling all of the attention of his companions to it, without yet verbalizing. When they have read it, he looks at them earnestly, quoting from a well known play involving children stolen by a warring lord.

“If they are returned to me, I will live. I would live a life as servant rather than king to have those safely in my arms again.”

Zahnan takes the drawing, as well as some ink and a quill to redraw it, before heading out to see Mehman’s equipment, picking up and studying the wand before stowing it all in a small pouch on his belt. He then heads below deck, inspecting for damage and Mending it where he can

Scrape collects the rings and walks over to Xyrryn, offers her one of the rings, and relays the totals. "Should we split these to find out what they do?"

"Since Anskaar joined the fight second, they sustained fewer casualties. 20 Raiders survive, though about half are injured. There are 50ish prisoners left, all malnourished, about 3/4 of them are hurt. Of the slavers, 8 surviving ones are Luskar. Another 15 are Neveren sailors."

"So it looks like we have 10 able bodied raiders, 12-15 prisoners that can help some, and 8 Luskars pressed into service with the Slavers. So maybe 30 able-bodied that we can count on for sure. In addition, there are another 10 injured raiders, 35 prisoners too weak or injured to help, and 15 Neveren that I'd like to offer their blood to the sea."

"Do you think we can salvage the Frontier? The Ballista and Mangonels would be nice to have. Perhaps if the Frontier can't be saved, we could better arm the Anskaar."

Kapa relays what he saw and stays invisible, watching from above.

"Taking the ship for our own would be much sweeter than scuttling it. Thank you for letting me know what we've got to work with. As for the loot, probably best to worry about that when we're on our way and it's not like I can determine what magic what's got anyway. Maybe someone else does. If you don't mind, I could use your help acting as my second for now to keep order as I'll likely be joining those down below on repairs since I know the right spell for the job." Xyrryn replies. And without waiting for a response from Scrape, just assuming he's ok with her taking command and having a command responsibility thrust upon her, she steps back onto the galley where she calls out in a loud clear voice.

"Ok you motley bunch of ne'er-do-wells and unlucky souls to find yourselves in this situation none of you wished for! I am Captain Xyrryn Sapphirica, and I will be acting as such until we have the time to sort things out proper. That's not up for debate as we do not have the time. Sigfred Blodox has generously given us the other longship, so we'll be taking both for the moment so's we can take em both for when we can better figure out our needs. For the time being, Scrape here will act as my second in command. Those of you who know anything about repairs will be coming with me below decks to patch the holes and mend whatever else needs mending. Scrape will organize the rest of ya between crewing this ship and what needs doing on the longship."

"Grimhild here is my Quartermaster" she points to the ghost who floats over. "Best get used to that right quick. Waverly will organize a cooking team as I'm sure most of ye haven't had a proper meal in a bit." at which she indicates the mermaid. "If I hear anyone decided not to pull their weight that couldn't, they're going overboard! No exceptions!"

After that she gathers some folks, to help with conducting the repairs. Grimhild floats after her, letting her know where the proper supplies are and then goes to Waverly to do the same for her.

Taking all the silk and fine clothing (as well as the brandy), Pollock rolls it all in the throw rug and shoulders it before moving across the room to take the wyvern head. He pauses to see what Sword is pointing at so excitedly and the says "I know your gear probably has significant sentimental value to you, but considering that the city is currently occupied, retrieving it doesn't really seem doable at the moment." He pats the kenku on the shoulder sympathetically before continuing on to grab the mounted head. "Do you guys think he actually killed this himself, or just bought it to seem tough? My money's on the latter."

Emerging from the cabin in time to hear Xyrryn's...pep talk? Speech? Whatever you wanted to call it, he takes special note that he was not included in the list of people given a task, so he decides to busy himself with his own tasks. Calling out to two nearby prisoners, he hands the rug to one and the head to the other and instructs them to go drop them by the other loot at the stern of the Anskaar and then meet him in the galley of the Frontier.

Going over to Scrape he says "I'm going down below to loot the less obvious items from the Frontier and I'm taking those two with me," as he indicates the two prisoners dropping off his new possessions. "You have fun with...all this," he chuckles as he makes his way below decks.

With Zahnan and a few others in tow, Xyrryn descends to the bottom deck to find that the water is already up to mid-thigh and more is spraying in around where Ragskal’s ram is lodged in the hull. Dipping underwater to feel around the hole, her heart sinks as she realizes the extent of the damage. The hole is nearly two foot wide and four foot tall. The moment Sigfried backs the Ragskal out to sail away, the sea will begin pouring in. Putting a patch on from the inside would require an immense amount of strength to press it against the flowing water. Putting a patch on from the outside would be incredibly dangerous for those who made the dive.

”Ehh, cap’m? You’d need to ground her to have a chance at fixing that!” She straightens up to glare at the raider who was only telling her what she already knew, and he continues. ”You could probably make it there, but… well you’d have to do it without us.” He hangs his head sheepishly, not meeting her gaze. ”With all due respect, this is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the North right now, and we’re ‘fraid you’ll be spotted ‘fore you can get her fixed up, drain the water out, and sail off. We signed up on this mission to save Sigfried and we did so, so… If’n ya insist on tarrying here, we’re gunna have to take Anskaar and go.”

Meanwhile up on deck, Scrape is examining the Frontier’s weaponry. The late Captain Harald was cunning if nothing else, as he seems to have targeted the siege weaponry first. One of the balistae is burned to a crisp, and all three of the others have javelins and arrows lodged in them. However, two of them are in rough shape but definitely usable, and the third non-burned one can be looted for parts.

Meanwhile, there is only one mangonel. It has been mounted on some sort of rotating platform to allow it to fire in any direction, making a second one unnecessary. Taking the platform with you would be next to impossible, but the mechanism is simple and could be easily replicated by someone with the knowhow to build such things.

One of the slavers, a Neveren sailor impressed into service aboard the ship, notices the Tabaxi eying them and explains that they can easily be removed from their platforms and begins to walk Scrape through how it would be done.

Pollock meanwhile finds the galley and is disgusted by what he sees. The slavers seem to have subsisted off of the same gruel as the prisoners, except that it wasn’t as watered down and they were given a supplementary ration of salt pork. Wherever Mehman kept his more quality food, it wasn’t here.

Scrounging through the holds, he is able to find some of what he’s looking for:

6 lengths of hemp rope
several buckets
manacles and chains
soap
sacks

Sword listens, and then slowly rolls the paper, placing it against his person. After a moment of meeting their current leader’s eyes, he nods. A wounded hawk does not strike immediately if it can be avoided.

As Xyryyn leaves, he looks around the deck. He has never been a sailor before, in fact, never sailed at all before his imprisonment. Now, he was here. He found himself unable to...do...what everyone else was doing. How did they just know how to react?

He slipped over to nearby sailors and watched them at different tasks, studying their motions before joining in and repeating them. His mimicry was deft, and though he did not understand always the purpose, he knew the form by the time he was done.

Scrape organizes work parties to move the weapons and collect any other valuables off the deck of the Frontier. He addresses the crew to encourage the groups to work together. "We are alone at sea as one, without any tyrants to lord over us. No matter what ship you are from, or whether you were there by choice or by force, we will not hold your background against you. Your actions from this moment forward will determine your standing with me. We will be our own free people, bringing death down upon those who have wronged us and finding glory and treasure on the sea. If you don't want that life for good, that is fine, but for now, we all need to pitch in if we are to survive."

Scrape asks one of the raiders to explain their command structure, hoping to meet the highest ranking remaining raider, and explain that the slavers and prisoners will not replace them.

He talks to the Neveren sailor almost pulling him by the collar to keep up as Scrape runs around the deck, managing and encouraging the crews, "What is your name? Stay close to me for now and help me organize things. Don't give orders to the raiders, though. Leave that to me in case they take offense at being commanded by someone they just defeated."

Finally he turns to Sword and sees his disappointment, "What is in Luskan that is so important to you? We will help you find it."

After a brief pause as all aboard stare at the strange, scrawny creature who presumes to order them around the deck of the Frontier is suddenly awash in activity as everyone jumps to their assigned tasks. Whether fear, exhaustion, confusion, or genuine respect, everyone seems to have a reason to obey Scrape. Pretty soon crews have formed to plunder the ship, pull survivors out of the water, throw the dead into the water, and tend to injuries.

One of the raiders readily offers up there there wasn't really much of a command structure; everyone just did what the captain said and used their own best judgement, usually holding a quick vote to decide things, or an impromptu thing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thing_(assembly)) to resolve disagreements.

As to the sailor he's dragging around: "D-dagult, sir! Me parents were one of the Lord Protector's first supporters and named both me and our fishing boat after him. His men rewarded me for our loyalty by snatching me offa the docks and shoving me onto this rig. Said they'd hang me if I didn't serve!"

Meanwhile, a pair of raiders approach Sword and begin showing him more efficient ways to do perform whatever tasks he's doing, laughing to each other in amazement as he nearly instantly picks up whatever they have to teach.

To Dagult, "Of the remaining Frontier crew, who would have been in charge once the captain went down? We might need to talk to them. I'll also need you to help me interview the former prisoners. The Frontier lurches as Sigfried pulls his ship free. He sails off southward with a hearty wave and a loud farewell, as Anskaar’s oarsmen pull the longship alongside the floundering galley to start transferring cargo. With the water flooding into the Frontier’s hold acting as a ballast, the crew is able to disassemble and transfer both usable ballistae and the mangonel over to their new ship along with the rest of the plunder.

They barely get everything tied down before their work is interrupted by one of the raiders making a repair to Anskaar’s sails, pointing to the north. A Neveren warship has appeared on the horizon and is sailing directly at the party. Under the direction of Scrape and Xyrryn, all survivors pile onto Anskaar and the raiders let loose her sails with a triumphant roar. Torches are hurled onto the Frontier’s oil-covered deck, setting the galley aflame as Anskaar’s sails catch the wind and send her lurching into motion. Making for the western horizon, Anskaar flies over the water, and within an hour the warship has faded from sight.

As they’re fleeing, Xyrryn stomps over to the rudder and seizes it from the raider who had been manning it. Shouting orders almost needlessly as the raiders seem to anticipate her every command, she can’t help but grin as she finally returns to sea.

Commandeering the desk in the captain’s cabin, Zahnan redraws the strange diagram he found to find that it is the schematic for a mortar. Nearly unheard of outside of artificer’s circles, mortars are incredibly rare and few have ever successfully been built. A weapon like this would be invaluable for the resistance… and the Anskaar. Glancing over it, he can tell what whomever designed it was a man whose genius bordered on insanity, but who knew very little about metallurgy. The design is truly revolutionary, but built as-is, the mortar would explode upon being fired. For a trained Artillerist, fixing the problem is a trivial matter, and with a few quick calculations, Zahnan now possesses the holy grail of Artificers everywhere: schematics for a mortar; one that will work.

Sword, on the other hand (other wing?), is content to continue mimicking the sailors around him. He soon finds himself following one of them into the rigging, and upon reaching the top of the mast is forcefully broken out of his trance by a new sensation. The crisp, salty sea air, the wind in his feathers, seeing unobstructed for miles. It’s just like… just like he imagined flying would be. He could get used to this.

Pollock finds Anskaar’s galley much more to his satisfaction than the Frontier’s. The raiders seem to subsist largely off of smoked fish and dried fruits and vegetables, and there are a dozen kegs of a sweetened small beer in the hold. While the setup is modest and smaller than he’d like, it has everything he needs, including several sets of Cook’s Utensils.

Lastly, Scrape continues to marshal the crew around. Either ignoring or oblivious to the questioning looks given to him by those who had never seen a Tabaxi before, he seems to be perfectly comfortable in this new position. His revelry is short-lived however, when Dagult points out the raider who tossed him into the water.

It was one of the knocked-out sailors Pollock dragged from the hold, the one a fellow prisoner knocked out. His head-wound has stopped bleeding, but the man is catatonic; his eyes are glassed over and he seems to have soiled himself at some point. One of his fellow slavers claims to have poured a potion down his throat, but he seems beyond help.

With the Neveren ship long-gone, the raiders direct the party to sail for Graggoth’s Bank, a shallow area where they can anchor Anskaar to catch their breath and figure out what to do next.

Once moored, the Anskaar raiders recommend you follow Sigfried's advice and head to Cloudwatch Isle after some short rest and respite, but Zahnan happens to know of a small cove used by the Resistance as a sort of naval base.

Scrape goes over to the catatonic man, but has no more joy upon seeing the man's condition, "This man threw me overboard for no reason. Only a miracle kept me alive. It was the only real mistreatment I experienced on the Frontier and I don't hold any of the rest of the crew responsible. But he cannot stay here." He slits the man's throat and tosses the body overboard. He whispers the next part to himself, not even sure yet what the name means, "For Olhydra."

He then tries to reassure the other ex-slavers that they will not be judged merely for their positions on the Frontier. If any of the ex-prisoners have specific complaints about the previous actions of the crew, those will be addressed by having both parties explain the situation and any punishment approved by the crew. "A thing, you called it?"

He speaks to the other officers, "We should give the silks and clothes to the crew. I bet some of them will want to make hammocks, and some will want to sell their share at the next port. To the Icewind base at Cloudwatch Isle or Zahnan's cove?"

He will keep the rings for now and see if he can attune to them in case they are magic, take one of each potion, and take some studded leather armor and a dagger from the armory. He puts his spell components in a pouch and strings a pearl to wear it around his neck as an arcane focus.

Starting first with the damaged wand, Zahnan discovers that it is a Wand of Fear, though Mehman seems to have damaged it in a clumsy attempt to increase its power. It could be repaired with some simple materials found at most markets.

He moves on to the silver ring. It is a Ring of Force.

Attuned, 2 charges

While wearing the ring, the attuned wearer may, as a free action, empower one of their offensive spells. If the spell requires an attack roll, the caster has advantage on it. If the spell requires an enemy creature to make a saving throw, the caster may select up to two affected creatures and force them to have disadvantage on the saving throw, or expend an additional charge to select up to four creatures.

The ring regains all charges every night at midnight.

Next, he tries the gold and ruby ring. It is a Vintner's Ring

Used by wearing the ring and holding it over an empty container while saying the word “Please” in Elven. The ring will fill the container with up to two gallons of fine fortified Elven Wine.

The ring may be used once per day, and regains its power at sunrise, even underground.

Lastly, he moves on to the Hammer. He barely starts channeling the spell before the sky turns black and a thundering voice emanates from the weapon: ”I SEE YOU, MORTAL!”

He is left reeling as the sky turns back to normal, but is able to glean some information on it:

Warhammer, 1d8, Versatile (1d10), Cursed, attuned

Shaking his head at Waverly's offer, Pollock responds "Thanks, but no; I've had enough fish heads to last a lifetime back when I was in the monastery." After a quick look around to acquaint himself with the galley, he grabs one of his pilfered buckets and fills it with with beer, then instructs his minions to gather up as much of the smoked fish and dried fruit they can carry to begin passing out to those on the top deck. He asks Waverly to go supervise to make sure no one tries to take more than their ration, then goes about outfitting himself.

Winding one of the lengths of rope across his chest and around his waist, he affixes one of the sacks to it and then fills it with the chain and manacles. He slips another two empty sacks into the space between him and the rope along with his improvised spear, grabs a cast iron skillet and butcher's cleaver from the galley, and then heads topside to make sure the food is being passed out properly and to see what the rest of the crew is doing.

Arriving just in time for the identification of their loot, his eyes go wide at the description of the Vintner's Ring. "That would save me So much money. I know we're not doing dibs, but I'm Very interested in that." His wonder is soon replaced with slight trepidation though when the sky darkens and the voice booms at the identification of the hammer. "I vote we DON'T use that." He then laughs as a thought occurs to him; "That requires attunement to get the benefits/curse, right? Why don't we just use it as a sledge hammer or for other mundane means without attuning ourselves to it? I'm pretty sure we've already pissed off whoever that was by killing Mehman, why not rub it in their face a little?"

Sword revels in the open air at the top of the mast, feeling what it might be like to break free of the confines of the earth. When he finally notices he has been there for some time, he comes back down skillfully, having seen the others.

He quickly makes his way to the armory, looking to replace what was lost. He gathers some armor that seems like it would fit and then spends the remainder of the time testing longswords, trying to find one that would suit him, finally settling on a long flat blade that is light. He changes hastily, and ties the scabbard nearly horizontally, to ease drawing the long blade. He also tucks one of the shortswords into another scabbard at his waist.

When he returns to the others he finds them considering the hammer. Just looking at it, he scowls and after Pollock’s comment, he grunts slightly and throws his old rags over it, covering the weapon. “Melt. Reforge.”

Scrape hands the Vintner's ring to Polluck, "Here. You should be able to make good use of this. Try to use it to keep the crew happy but not ... aggressive."

He tries to give the silver ring to Xyrryn, thinking she could make better use of it. When she refuses, he keeps it reluctantly, "Thank you. If you change your mind, I still think it would be better for you."

After dividing the loot for the officers, he ignores the hammer and heads over to meet more of the crew. "Do you all need anything? Who wants to stay with us and who wants to get off here?"

Waverly shrugs at Pollock, pops the eye into her mouth, and gives him a nod as she heads out to supervise to food delivery.

When Sword goes down to the armory, she joins him. Taking some light armor, a crossbow, and he notices her tuck a few daggers in various places on her person. But most of the time is spent picking out one of the few rapiers. Like Sword, she gives them a few practice swings. She settled on one with a black basket hilt.

She nods at Sword's suggest and adds, "Though whatever it's made into would still probably be cursed, assuming it even can be melted. If the curse can be broken or isn't too terrible, hopefully we could make it into a weapon one of us can actually use."

As Scrape goes off to talk to the crew, she raises an eyebrow as that had been her plan too. So she simply goes and talks to people in a different part of the ship. Trying to get to know their stories and the like.

In the evening she sings a few songs up on the deck as she takes a turn at the helm.

She retires to the captain's chambers (regardless of who else might already be there) and spends a bit of time painting her rapier a bit. She adds some blood red to the basket hilt so it alternates with the black and then she paints very small black musical notes along the flat sides of the blade.

"Oh-hoho, I am going to put this thing to good use" Pollock says excitedly as he slips the ring onto his finger. Flexing his hand to make sure it's on the most comfortable finger, he lifts his fist into the air and bellows to the crew "Here this, me hearties; a half gallon of Elvish wine goes to the hardest worker of both the trained and the untrained crew. Once we only have trained crew, the hardest worker of the day gets the whole gallon to do with as he will!" Lowering his voice to a normal tone, he turns back to the other officers and says "There's a reason you don't usually hear about the cook facing the plank during a mutiny. Seriously though, that should do wonders for morale. I'd recommend we also give them the next day off, that way they can sleep off and it ensures that no one can get it two days in a row. I should also mention that I run my galley and mess as a rank-free zone, so unless you'd like to hear what the crew really thinks of you, I'd recommend you lot usually take your meals on deck or in the Captain's Quarters."

After the group splits, he also goes about acquainting himself with the crew, making sure everyone's stomachs are full and thirsts are slaked, occasionally using the promise of the wine to coax anyone he thinks could be doing more. Once he's satisfied that his men are all taken care of, he goes back down to the galley and takes his own food, enjoying the freedom of being able to sprawl out.

As night draws in he forces himself up to begin preparing the evening meal. Despite his exhaustion he manages to make a fairly simple meal, turning some of the dried fruit into a sauce that tastes surprisingly good on the fish. As he hands out the food he asks everyone if they can read, so that he can verbally inform them of his rules after he posts them. Once his official work is done, he sets about finding a hammer and nails to hang the wyvern head above the door of the galley, then retires to the Captain's Quarters to eat his own food and look for a pen and paper to set down the rules for the mess:
1) This is a free space, so say what you will to whoever you want. Note that this doesn't mean you're free from any consequences that may come down outside these doors.
2) NO FIGHTING! I'm much better at it than any of you, and I swear I will crack you with my skillet if I see you throw a blow at your mates.
3) You gamble in my mess, the ship gets a 5% cut of every pot. The only acceptable currency is future shares.
4) Don't ask what's in the food (unless you have an allergy).
5) I know the duty roster; if you think you can come to the galley for a breather when you're supposed to be working, I'll put you to work until the Quartermaster gets annoyed enough to find you for shirking your duties.
6) If you're not on duty feel free to spend as much time in the mess as you want doing whatever you like.

After he posts them, he bids the other officers good night as he takes a sleeping bag onto the open deck and falls asleep under the stars.

As the evening winds down, the raiders gather the party and as many of the former prisoners on the top deck as they can, with anyone who can’t fit standing on the deck below. Torches are lit at the four corners of the deck, and a bright, blazing fire is lit in the cooking station at the center of the deck. A woman steps forward to speak: ”We of Anskaar have chosen our eldest to speak for us. Without a captain, he will act as lawspeaker for this þing.”

She steps back and a second raider, a grizzled half-orc missing a fang and an eye on the same side of his scarred face, steps close to the fire and tosses leaves from an Ash tree in, watching as they catch alight and are carried into the air by the heat. ”I, Grunnar One-Eye of Clan Mukarra, call this sacred meeting to order. The traditional rule shall be followed always: under penalty of punishment and under the gods’ eyes, ye speak only in turn, ye speak only in truth, and ye accept the judgements of yer peers. All are equal before this gathering, even my humble self.” He bows his head, taking a dagger in his hand to prick the tip of his right thumb and allows a single drop to fall into the flames.

”Now, the issues before us are four:

The first is the matter of fellowship! Anskaar has new owners, and it is their right to choose their crew. We’ve not enough space fer all aboard to remain. Those who wish to stay must state their worth, while those who wish to go only need stay silent and ye will be allowed to depart at the next port, assuming your judgement doesn’t send you to the sea’s embrace.

Second, justice! Crimes have been committed and Lord Tyr must have his due! The aggrieved will step before this fire, along with the accused. They will each state their case, then the collective we shall determine guilt or lack of, and if guilty render judgement.

The third is the matter of leadership! Though we all hail from different backgrounds, we stand before this fire as warriors all! To please Lord Tempus, a captain must be chosen. Those of you who feel worthy step forward, but know this: the captain serves the crew. As we choose our leaders to guide us, so may we remove them if their guidance fails. State your case and we shall elect the worthiest!

And last we have the matter of direction! Two destinations have been chosen: our temporary home at Cloudwatch Isle, and a base of the Luskar Resistance on the continental shores. The captain and owners shall make the final decision, but the law of our people says that they must take our council into consideration!

With the agenda set, I open the forum!”

Despite the orderly start, it seems that the thing itself has a chaotic life of its own. The raiders move around the deck, collecting information from both the former slavers and former prisoners alike. After an hour of activity, everything quiets down, and Grunnar approaches the gathered party, eying each of them appraisingly.

”Fer yer consideration, we have a list of names fer ye. We have forty-six who wish to stay among the newcomers, most’re prisoners, twenty-six in fact. Of the rest, ye got five mercs, seven Luskar sailors, and eight Neveren sailors. I’d suggest we take no more’n thirty-five. Cut the damn mercs out, then keep the sailors and the best prisoners. Up to ye though.

Errr… Next we have the trial. Seems like the aggrieved took most of their revenge during the battle, but there’s still a few issues need addressing. Two accusations of murder, one backed by witnesses, the other dubious with a prisoner accusin’ one of the Luskar sailors of killing a fellow prisoner, but no one else saw it or even remembers the killed prisoner. The rest are just beatings or denied meals, nothing particularly outrageous.

Lastly we have three outside of ye who want to be cap’n. One’s a merc who all but demanded he get the lead, most’ve us are of the opinion we just toss ‘im o’erboard. Second one of our number put his name forward. Finally, one of the prisoners; claims he was a merchant ship captain before he was nabbed and a noble to boot. Seems like a good man, and he has a good share of support.

So, how ye wanna resolve all this?”

Scrape speaks to Grunnar, preferably so that only Dagut and the other officers can hear, but in public if that is the only option, "Grunnar One-Eye of Clan Mukarra, we are glad to have your counsel. I have a few questions.

First, of those that wish to stay but are not sailors, have we asked what they will do if we kick them off? There is no need to make any enemies. Perhaps we can find room for a few more.

Second, of those that wish to leave, especially any Neveren, what are their motives? Are there any that might use their knowledge of our ship against us. If we think that to be the case, those we should kill. (He takes this last sentence out if speaking publicly).

Third, can we hold a trial now for both of the accused murderers? We should determine their innocence or guilt tonight as well as their punishment if needed. If either are found innocent, please bring their accuser to us. I suggest we let the other crimes go for now, but keep an eye on both the accused and accusers.

Fourth, the Raider who wishes to be captain. If they are a good enough leader, why did they not gain the support of the rest of your crew to be your representative here? Let us meet them as well as the mercenary and the merchant who seek the job. We have two skilled sailors among us, so likely will not need a captain, but skill and leadership is always appreciated."

"Here's my thinking on the matter:
1) We cut the Neveren for sure, since we can't know that their loyalty will truly be with us over their people. Ditto the mercenaries, but I'd be willing to let them stay if they give up mercing and swear an oath of loyalty; part of the ship, part of the crew, as they say.
2) We make way for the Luskar base so that whoever we cut loose isn't left fending for themselves, and so that we make sure we don't find ourselves fighting them again down the road.
3) Let all sides plead their cases. I'm inclined to believe both are guilty, but I'm a reasonable Tortle and would like to hear the defenses of the accused before passing judgment.
4) I can sail but have less than no desire to take on that level of responsibility that comes with captaining. My support is behind Xyrryn, but I'd say let all four make their cases to the crew and then put it to a vote.
Additionally, once all those have been settled, I propose the captain write up the ship's charter and have everyone sign or make their mark along with their thumb print in blood; people are less likely to break a blood oath than the normal kind. Plus, it unites us all by showing everyone aboard is willing to bleed for the rest, and by knowing that the little twinge of pain that will be there for a few days is shared by all."

Grunnar, leans back away from Scrape with something between a sneer and a scowl- it’s hard to tell what his exact expression is given how gnarled his face is. ”It’s Grunnar or One-Eye, we only speak formally before the gods. As for yer… ‘few’ questions:

Yeh obviously haven’t spent much time at sea, lad. What happens to those we don’ want? It’s simple, they get off at the next suitable port and we go our separate ways. If’n they hold a grudge, then they hold a grudge. Life at sea is hard and no good sailor would take it personally and if they did, they’ll not be living long. It’s not like we’re gunna maroon them far from home.

As for motives? Well, I don’t trust the mercs, some of ‘em might go back to their employers and report, some might not. Most of the sailors who want off say they’re not cut out fer raiding and just want to get back to their lives, and the prisoners who want off say the same or that they never were sailors and don’t want to be. Overall, I’d suggest we let them off at Cloudwatch, seeing as I doubt the Resistance wants anyone but them to know where that cove is; we can always keep those who want in the Resistance and let them off later. Not really my business though, don’t give a damn about the Resistance.

For the trial, yeah, I’ll bring ‘em forward. It’s yer ship, so you can pass judgement and as lawspeaker I’ll pass sentence. First things first though, we have to get ourselves organized. Tyr doesn' like unfair trials.

As for the question of captain? My fellow raider who put his name forth is a good lad, just inexperienced. Has the support of his friends, but he’d need your support to get his way. Me? I’m the eldest and I know our laws well as anyone, so they made me the representative, simple as that. I’m no leader though, just an old man who can still swing an axe and doesn’t want to die in bed.”

He then turns to Pollock. ”You don’t trust the Neverens? Well I don’t trust the mercenaries. Man who’ll join a slave ship for coin’ll do anything for coin; ‘sides, most’ve ‘em can fight but can’t sail. ‘Far as I’m concerned, we kill the worst of ‘em than hand them over as prisoners of war to the Jarl at Cloudwatch. The Neverens seem alright though. Most of them say they were impressed into duty. Been there meself; not pleasant, liable to make a man hold a grudge against the one who did it to ‘im. They’re good sailors though.

As for our direction? It’s split. We, those native to Anskaar that is, want to go home, to Cloudwatch. The Luskar want to go the Resistance base, but only after everyone else has been let off so noone knows where it is. The Neverens are split between going to Cloudwatch for asylum, since they’ll probably be called deserters if their countrymen get their hands on them, and being dropped off somewhere on the coast so they can make their way home. The Prisoners don’t seem to care, as long as they’re anywhere but here. The Merc all want to go anywhere but Cloudwatch or the Resistance, probably ‘cause they know what kind of treatment they’ll get there.”

"I agree with you on the subject of the mercenaries and I see no reason to question your judgement as to who stays aboard the ship, Grunnar. As for the matter of determining the truth of the murder, I have an idea for handling that when we're ready. And as for destination, given what you've said it seems like Cloudwatch is the better choice. The Neveren and others who leave there can find their way elsewhere afterwards I'm sure."

"As for my qualifications as captain, I'm a pirate born and bred. My father and I served on the Cacophonous Curse and, before she was sunk and my surviving crew and I were left for dead, I was captain of the Gold Night following the captains of both ships getting themselves and a lot of their crew killed fighting each other over a grudge. So I have some experience dealing with crew made of those who have previously pointed swords at each other. I can't say much for your man, but as for the mercenary I won't serve a captain I can't trust and I'm sure the merchant noble is all fine and well but I'd imagine most of you'd prefer a captain than can lead you in battle."

Sword looks impassively at the assembled company, standing nearby. He clearly does not wish to speak much, and the more the crew get close to him they would know he was mentally cataloguing how to respond so he was not...embarassed by his way of speaking. When he did speak, it was simple words that he tried to keep of roughly the same sound - similar gender, tone; all in an illusion of consistent speech.

“You sail, you serve. You leave, fine. You betray, die.” He shrugs as if these are simple concepts.

He addresses the question next regarding where they are going. “Luskan...eventually. I must go there. It makes sense to strengthen ourselves first.”

“I cannot choose a leader. I will pledge my sword to whoever is chosen.”

He regards those about to be tried. “Your justice is sound. I stand by if you need someone to swing the sword.”

Having what he needs, Grunnar disappears into the crowd and returns twenty minutes later. Ah’ight, first things first. As far as the new captain goes, we’re down to two candidates. None of us really support the son of Anskaar he’s not salty enough yet for it, if ye catch my drift, and it seems that the merc took to trying to shout at anyone who didn’t support him. Ended up being that someone shanked ‘im and shoved ‘im in the water. No witnesses, naturally,” he says with a chuckle. ”Everyone’s split pretty evenly between the merchant and Ms. Sapphirica. If’n you all are united wanting her as captain, I’d be willing to throw my weight behind her as well, ‘n that should sway enough of my brethren to elect her easily. My only condition is that she swear to me, here ‘n now, that she will remember that she’ll be our leader not our ruler, ‘n those who will follow her only do so willingly.”

He pulls a scrap of paper out of his jacket and glances at it briefly. ”Ehm… Next the crew. Ms Sapphire says she wants to keep the sailors and prisoners, but cut loose all the mercs, while Mr. Pollock says we should keep the mercs and out the Neveren sailors. The rest of you haven’t stated an opinion yet. So these are yer two choices. I’ve given my council, so the final word is yours. Truely, I don’t care enough to argue.

After that, the direction still needs to be decided. If’n we make for the Resistance, they’ll likely recruit who they can ‘n jail who they can’t for secrecy’s sake. At Cloudwatch, we’ll take the mercs as prisoners of war and jail any who needs it, the rest who won’t stay on the ship will be allowed ashore to either make a new life there or find their way back to the continent.”

He shoves the scrap back into his jacket. ”Alright, ‘nough of that. As far as matters of justice, I’ve seen to sentence those accused of lesser crimes to their choice of lashings or paying weregild to those they harmed. No one has any coin to pay, but I know enough money lenders who’ll be happy to pay the aggrieved in exchange for a labor contract with the punished. Not the best solution, sure, but under the circumstances… I’d be willing to hear better ideas if’n ye have any.

Now, bring forward the accused!” Three men are brought before the party, two of them in chains.

”We’ve two matters before us. First, the chained wretch on the left is Alec Metricil, one of the mercs. We have testimony from both ex-prisoners and ex-crew of the Frontier that say he beat a man to death with a chain. Alec claims the man spat at him and thus deserved it. Most of us say this case is an obvious one, but Tyr says all are deserving of a trial.’ Alec says nothing, only sneering haughtily at the party.

Grunnar then points to the other two men. ”These two are Jonah and Vallick, both of Luskan. Jonah was a prisoner aboard the Frontier, while Vallick was a sailor, nabbed off of his own ship in the harbor and made to join the crew. Jonah says that Vallick killed a prisoner aboard the Frontier but no one else says they saw it. I’ll let them tell their sides in their own words.

Jonah steps forward. ”Yeah, he did it, alright. Me mate Orel was arrested along with me. When they send us aboard Vallick was the one who led us down below deck. Orel tripped, and this wretch stabbed him and dragged him off! Never saw him again! The bastard deserves to be punished!”

Jonah barely finishes speaking before Vallick jumps in. ”He’s lying! I was on the top deck the whole time they were bringing the prisoners in. I didn’t even want to be on that damn boat, besides, they said they’d beat us if we harmed the ‘merchandise’, w-what’dya think they’d have done to me if I killed one of them? Ya gotta believe me! I’ve known Jonah for years and he’s always hated me!”

”Alright, that’s enough outta you!” Grunnar interrupts. He steps forward nd frowns at the party. ”Well, there ya have it. What next?”

"I do so swear. T'was the shame on both my previous ships, way it should be." Xyrryn swears to Grunnar.

She doesn't try to say anything to sway the opinions of the others on who should be on the crew, providing Pollock doesn't try to press his own view. She just hopes they'll see the sense in not wanting to serve aside men that might betray them later for a bit of coin.

"For my vote we can throw the mercenary to sea, let him see how much she respect im."

After Jonah and Vallick tell their tales she casts a spell on each of them and tells them they feel compelled to tell the whole truth and nothing but of the matter.

Casting Suggestion on Jonah and Vallick. Nothing prevents Xyrryn from just spamming it until they fail their saves or she runs out of spell slots. And she knows if it's working or not since it's a concentration spell. Yet another reason why Zone of Truth is a completely useless spell.

"I'm easy, so whoever the Captain decides to keep is fine with me. Ditto with destination. As for the matter of who'll be making those calls, like I said, I throw my weight behind Xyrryn. No offense to the other guy, I just don't think a merchant has the chops to command a pirate vessel."

When the accused speak, he glowers at Alec and then looks on quizzically at the situation with the other two. While he has a good backup question for if Xyrryn's magic somehow fails, he shifts his focus back to Alec. Walking to face the slaver, he stands five feet in front of him and spits on his boots. His voice carries across the crowd as he reaches into his sack and begins pulling out a length of chain, "This one does not deny or express remorse for his actions. While some say justice is a clear issue, I personally find it to be murky; some would say to lop off his head or shoot him through the heart with an arrow so he dies quick and clean, others would suggest that we use this chain I have to give him the same fate as he delivered. I've never been comfortable with executions, always thought it wrong to kill someone who's helpless, even if they are guilty of doing just that. I say take off his chains and let me deal with him fairly, what say you all?"

Scrape addresses Grunnar, but makes sure the other officers can hear. "Grunnar, thank you for your counsel.

A pirate captain needs to be able to do more than just sail and sell things. They need to be able to fight, and Xyrryn proved herself in the battle. You would all be dead if not for her, so she should be captain.

As the officers on this ship, I propose that we have a leadership council from the crew to present requests and offer us continued advice. I propose that the council include you, the merchant who wished to be captain, Dagut, and the young son of Anskaar. Are there any others that we think should be on this council?

For the crew, I agree with your proposal for who to keep and who to let go. When we get to Cloudwatch we can let the others off.

For the trials, I vote guilty for Alec and innocent for Vallick. Grunnar, you can decide the punishment of either found guilty. If either are killed, dump their body in the sea. Polluck, I think we should save trial by combat for another day. For now, we should dispense justice quickly."

"He killed someone who was completely helpless, just as he is now before all of us; if we kill him in such a state, how are we any different than him?" The half-orc gives Pollock a good open-handed smack on the back of the head. ”Trial by combat is a sacred tradition to determine guilt, not an execution method! He is on a ship of Icewind birth, he will be punished according to Icewind law.” Grunnar points at Alec. ”Ye have been found guilty of murder in a dishonorable fashion. For brutally killing one so helpless before ye, so shall ye be left helpless in turn. When we next come across a rock jutting from the water, ye shall be tied to it in nothing but yer skivvies Then, we sail away leavin’ ye for the birds. Take him away!”

Alec begins to protest, but is silenced by a punch in the mouth by a nearby raider and is hauled away. As soon as he’s out of sight, Xyrryn steps in with her trademark smirk and casts compel, first on Jonah.

The man writhes, gritting his teeth as if in pain then begins to mumble, ”No, I lied. Orel is still in Luskan, far as I know. Vallick convinced my girl to leave me a couple weeks back, ‘n needs to be punished for it, but he didn’ kill anyone. He-”

”Enough!” Grunnar interrupts. ”At least have the decency to duel him, instead of something so cowardly as lying ta get him executed! Gustav!” A raider, presumably Gustav, steps forward. ”Bring me our spare anchor stone! I know what to do with him.” As Gustav leaves, Grunnar turns back to Jonah. ”Ye shame yer ancestors and the gods all, and I’m sure they’d love to get their hands on ye. Unfortunately, yer in my hands now and ye’ll never meet them, for ye belong to the Crushing Wave now, and it’s her that’ll mete your reward. If yer lie succeeded, we’d have thrown an innocent into the sea. She's been promised blood, so now you’ll take his place.” Jonah goes pale as he is dragged away.

Grunnar then dashes over to the main mast and climbs up until he’s above the heads of the crowd, then hangs off with one arm to address the assembly.

”Listen up ye bilge whelps! We’ve talked and talked all night, and now is the time to decide! Decide who’ll be our new captain! We be selecting from two of those who were formerly imprisoned aboard the wreck we burned earlier this day! At the bow, we have Sir Rennet von Micklen, merchant and noble of Waterdeep! All ye dandies who want to hang up yer weapons and follow him to a death in bed, whimper aye now!” A few on deck begin to cheer but stop themselves as they register what the half-orc had just said.

”And at the stern, we have Ms. Xyrryn Sapphirica, once and future pirate captain. While she may not know our ways or understand our honor, she has shed her blood and lived just as we! Those who wish to follow her to glory scream aye now!” A cacophony chorus of roars echoes across the water and the ship even begins to rock as the raiders stomp their feet. The decision is made.

”Captain Sapphirica it is! She has told me we sail for Cloudwatch when we’re done here, so weigh anchor and loose the sails ye lazy scum! I call this thing to an end!”

The crowd scatters and the deck is once more awash in activity as sailors get to their tasks with mechanical precision. One of the raiders approaches the party and informs them that they can get some sleep if they wish, the crew has it from here.

Despite the damage dealt to it be the Frontier’s ballistae, Anskaar cuts through the water with ease as the crew turns it northwest and sets it off at full speed. After seventeen hours of smooth sailing, Sword calls for everyone’s attention from his spot at the top of the main mast with a many-voiced shout about a mountain on the horizon. It begins as a small speck that quickly gets larger as Cloudwatch Isle comes into full view.

A ovular island, three miles wide at its widest point, formed from the remains of an extinct volcano, Cloudwatch has been inhabited off-and-on over the years by fisherman using it as a base for expeditions into the deeper areas of the Trackless Sea. On the Islands east side lay the ruins of its old port and the remains of its main settlement, both rebuilt by the raiders from Icewind Dale, and tent cities and shanties have popped up around the rest of the island’s perimeter. Higher up, in the center of the plateau that serves as the mountain’s peak, sits a partially-constructed fortress, draped with banners of the Ten Towns. A hundred ships and boats of varying sizes dot the water around the harbor.

As the ship approaches the harbor, a pilot boat sails out to them and directs them to their assigned berth. Like clockwork, the raiders direct the new sailors in furling the sails and taking up oars to maneuver the Anskaar into dock. The party barely disembarks before they are set upon by a well-dressed moon elf who addresses them with his hands behind his back and chin raised haughtily. ”Disgraceful, DISGRACEFUL! Absolute rubbish! How dare they treat you like this! Look at what they’ve done to you...”

He rambles on for a bit longer before the party realizes he’s actually addressing their ship, not them, but another voice gets their attention before they can intervene. ”You’re the ones Sigfred was talking about right?” They turn around to see a short and stocky human in his late middle age speaking to them. “We received a few sendings from him telling of what transpired. Please follow me.” As he turns to leave, he stops to briefly address the elf. ”You’ll handle things?”

”Yes, yes… Ten minutes. Less,” the elf says with a dismissive wave of his hand.

The party starts following him into the settlement as he leads them towards its largest building, what looks like a reconstructed town hall. ”I apologize for our dockmaster. After several centuries as a majordomo to a noble house he’s… not used to dealing with salt like us. He’s invaluable though. Anyway, I am Arne, son of Ulf, and I am the Jarl’s thegn, and thus am in charge down here.”

They enter the main building and follow him to a room in the back decorated with a simple oak desk and a half dozen cushioned chairs. Retrieving a ceramic jug from behind the desk, he pours its contents into pewter mugs and passes it out. The liquid reeks of alcohol and any who taste it would discover it is mead, so thick and sickly-sweet that it is difficult to palate more than a mouthful at a time. Even so, Arne drains his mug in one go and sits behind the deck, offering the chairs to any who wish to sit.

”As I said, Sigfred informed us of what transpired on the raid on the Neveren ship, so we need not rehash that unless you truly wish to. We have more important matters to attend to. You see, while Sigfred holds a lot of respect around here for his insight, bravery and prowess, we also know he is brash and impulsive. You are not one of us and we do not trust you. That being said, we respect his decision and trust his trust in you, so I suppose it is more accurate to say that you are not one of us yet.” He pauses to refill his mug and offers a refill to anyone who might want it. ”You are welcome to stay, of course. There is plenty of plunder to go around, for those who earn it, and gods know we will not turn away able warriors, especially ones in possession of one of our best ships.”

A young boy barges into the room and drops a sheet of paper onto Arne’s desk before running out again, forgetting to close the door behind him. Arne glances over it with a smirk. ”I have good news, more good news, bad news, and one last bit of good news. First off, the dockmaster says he can get Anskaar back into fighting shape by the morning after tomorrow. Holes fixed, hull resealed and repainted, sails patch or replaced, new weapons installed, et cetera, for a cost. I know you’re short of coin, but the second piece is that we had a sizable bounty on the head of Mehman Kalshi, which we can apply to the dockmaster’s fees.’ He leans back in his chair, pursing his lips. ”Unfortunately, the bounty does not fully cover the costs; of course I can pay the rest, but that leaves us with a different problem.

Fortunately, I have some work for you once Anskaar is ready to sail. Paying work that’ll cover the debt and then some. Interested?”

Almost immediately after the voting was finished, (captain once more) Xyrryn had herself a chat with Sir Rennet von Micklen. Mainly to make sure there would be no bad blood between them but also to get to know the man and figure out what made him captain material and what value he could provide to her ship.

Xyrryn didn't bat an eye at the moon elf's behavior. She'd known the kind of men who cared more about ships than people before. Not bad having a few of those around really.

"Pleased to meet you Arne, Captain Xyrryn Sapphirica." she says with a smile and reaches out for a handshake. She wasn't used to people just presuming she and her crew worked at their pleasure, but considering a job in exchange for a ship and a port to call home wasn't a bad deal. And if she didn't like the deal, that's the beauty of ships. You can always just sail away somewhere else. "Let's hear it then." she replies warmly. She tries the mead and quickly puts it back down after a sip that was in retrospect too large.

Scrape follows Xyrryn's lead and addresses their host, "Thank you for welcoming us to your port. We are happy to join your campaign to plunder the Neveren coast. How much are you loaning us to finish repairs on our ship, and how are we to pay you back?"

Giving Grunnar a sidelong glance, Pollock shrugs and begins putting his chain back, saying "Like I said, I'm of the mind that even trash like this deserve to die with a weapon in hand, but I'm not in charge here." As the þing continues on, his body language and mannerisms give away that he disagrees with what the Icewinder's consider "just," especially considering they had shived and dumped the would-be merc captain for nothing more than being a blowhard.

When Xyrryn is named Captain he nods approvingly, waiting for an end to the þing and for the ship to get underway before going over to congratulate her. Proferring one of the looted bottles of brandy he says "I believe it's tradition for the new Officers on a ship to toast to good fortune and success; wouldn't want to anger Lady Fate now, would we Captain?"

Once he finishes his quick toast, he bids the others good evening and goes to put up his gear before finding Grunnar. He remains cordial, offering the orc a drink of Elvish wine, but still gets straight to the point; "I understand you're the eldest on the Anskaar, and obviously hold the respect of the crew for them to name you to speak for them, so I've no wish to start off antagonisticly, but know this; I let that slap slide earlier out of respect for the þing, but from here on, unless you're meteing out sanctioned punishment, keep your hands off me or you'll feel mine the next time we make port."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Awakening with the dawn, Pollock smiles as he stretches out his limbs from the confines of his shell. He breathes deeply of the ocean air, relishing each different element that comprised it, from the sting of the salt and the stink of fish, to the feel of the frost cooling his airway on it's trip to his lungs. Turning to face the sun, he pauses to feel it's warmth spread over him for a moment before making his way to the bow, standing out as far out on the bowsprit as he can while hanging onto the ropes. He spends several minutes enjoying the feel of the spray, the sight of the waves and the clouds, and the feeling of Freedom that came with the open sea. After a few minutes of enjoyment, he pulls himself back and makes his way to the larder to see what can be made for breakfast, then busys himself making lists of what will be needed to improve these poor Icewinder's food options; any meal while pirating could be your last, so he intends to make sure they're all worthy of such.

On making port, he dons his gear and joins the other Officers, standing behind and to the right of Xyrryn as his old Captain would have him do; apparently a 500lb mass of shell and muscle was intimidating to some, even though he never saw himself as such. He remains quiet as Arne speaks, letting the Captain take the lead. Seeing Arne down the mead in one go, he shrugs his shoulders and does the same, holding out his cup when more is offered.

The kenku nods in acceptance when Xyrynn is named captain, and doesn’t bat an eye when the criminals are sent to their punishments. When they leave to make sail, and they are able to sleep, he takes time at his bunk to stare at a blank piece of paper that he has unfurled, a bit of a charcoal pencil in his hand. For nearly an hour he stares at the paper, almost in a form of meditation, before he refurls the paper, and tucks it and the pencil into his armor. He rolls over and falls asleep.

When they make port, Sword is struck by the sights all around him, peerinf around af the busy port. He watches the moon elf, speaking to the ship and makes his way over. He understands this. “You speak to the thing’s soul. Let it know we will be kind.” He places a hand on the moon elf’s shoulder, then walks away.

When he is offered the mead, he gladly accepts for it is inconsiderate not to accept what is proffered. He darts his beak into the thick concoction, and at first shakes as if it is too powerful but then...then drinks more. When the refill is offered, he accepts readily.

Although Zahnan finds the Icewinder’s methods of execution barbaric, he says nothing, heading back to his quarters after the thing is over, finalizing work on the mortar design and preparing the new weapons for installation

Zahnan accepts the mead, drinking lightly, although fpdenying the refill when it’s offered. After discussion finishes he heads back to ship to supervise and assist with repairs, focusing mainly on the installation of the new weapons.

Grunnar laughs at Pollock’s words, waving them off dismissively. ”Yer soft lad, softer than you realize, but I like you! Ye got heart, stick with us and we’ll make a proper vikingr out of you yet. Fill you up with stone and fire rather than whatever swill they make their so-called pirates outta down here.”

Meanwhile, Zahnan finishes analyzing the mortar and realizes that he’ll need the following to construct it safely:

800 gp worth of pig iron and alloying materials.
300 gp worth of mithril
A large ruby infused with the essence of a fire elemental,
10 gp worth of saltpetre
50 gp worth of fine inks wizards use for inscribing spells
An empowered scroll of Glyph of Warding
He knows that the iron and saltpetre are common enough that they could be purchased from most markets (though that much iron might take a bit of time to collect), and he knows of multiple places in Luskan that would sell the inks he needs.

The rest of the components are more difficult. Mithril is rare, though purchasing it should be relatively simple once a source is tracked down. The scroll could be purchased from a wizard, bard, or cleric who knows the spell, but it would take a powerful one to empower it.

Finally, the ruby, the most essential part. Given his current company, he imagines that finding a big enough ruby is only a matter of time, he’ll just have to claim it as his share of the plunder once one shows up. Infusing it, however, would require the dangerous task of defeating several fire elementals, or the even more dangerous task of making a deal with an Efreeti.
”Oh, no need to look at me like that, you’ll like this, I promise,” Arne says, smirking at Xyrryn. He shoots a wink to Scrape before continuing. ”The Neverens have constructed a fort on the coast midway between Neverwinter and Luskan and we would like to… see the garrison demoralized. You need not know why, but I imagine you can guess.” He places a map of the Sword Coast North on his desk and points to the location. ”We have learned that a transport will arrive in four days time carrying goods needed at the fort. Equipment, provisions, sundries, and more importantly: mail and payroll.”

He stands up with a grin. ”Basically, your mission will be to sail to the fort and hide Anskaar in a nearby cove. When the transport arrives, you ambush it. Now the fort has a single guard boat that it will send out in an attempt to save the transport. Sink the guard, then board, plunder, and scuttle the transport, all within view of the fort. The garrison will be forced to watch helplessly as their pay and mail are stolen from them and their ships are sent to the bottom of the bay.

Do this and not only will your debt be absolved, but I will throw one thousand gold pieces for you on top of it. Naturally, you can keep the payroll and anything else you want from the transport. And if you find any information of value, I will of course pay a bonus for it.

And in fact, as a sign of good faith I will give you a letter of credit to purchase supplies from our market if you accept. You may eat and drink on the house, visit our smith to get your armor adjusted, it seems a bit ill-fitting.” He raises his glass to the party. ”So again I ask: interested? You may take some time to discuss it, I will leave if you want privacy.”

Scrape laps up a little of the mead he had been offered but hardly makes a dent in it, "Yes, Captain. I think it sounds like a good plan. Mr. Arne, about how many soldiers can we expect at the fort?"

Already getting bored of the conversation, Scrape is ready to move on. He then turns to the others, "We have some time. Let's explore the city a little while we wait for the repairs."

I assume at least one of us knows the location of the fort and the cove he is talking about.

”Ha! Excellent!” Arne spouts with a grin before draining his mug and slamming it down on the table. He pulls a few pieces of parchment out from under the desk and begins writing. ”This will be a fruitful partnership, I think. I know you are probably as skeptical of us as we of you and our ways may seem simple, even barbaric, but I promise you that if you hailed from the Dale, you’d understand. Life up there is harsh and short, even in Bryn Shander, and it only gets worse deeper into the Dale you go. When we learned of the Neveren attack, we knew we had mere weeks before trade was cut off. They wish to plunder? We will show them how to properly plunder.”

He finishes writing and hands Xyrryn a loose scroll and a sealed envelope. ”Please give the envelope to the dockmaster when you see him. The other is the letter of credit I offered. It entitles you to free lodging and meals at the tavern and access to the quartermaster. If you wish to purchase things from the market or drink more than your share, you’ll have to do it on your own coin.’ He then stands up and makes for the door, opening it and gesturing the party out. ”Alas, now I must ask you to depart. I have other appointments I must keep, and the Jarl will wish to know of this.”

The party leaves the hall to find Grunnar waiting for them. The half-orc’s eyebrows slowly rise as Xyrryn recounts the meeting to him. "Hmph. Bastard wants to test yer mettle is all. See if yer made of sterner stuff than most Southerners so he can decide whether to keep ye as a freelancer or offer to let ye join us proper. Talks outta both sides of his mouth, that one, but he keeps his promises.” He shrugs with a sigh that plainly states that he will say no more. ”Tour the port a bit?” He barely waits for a response before setting off.

He makes for the outskirts of the main settlement, party in tow, and stops before a building partially up the slope to the fortress. Unlike the rest of the island’s buildings, this one seems entirely new, built by the Icewinders themselves. It is a modest but sturdy wooden structure, built with great care. ”We start with the most important, and I don’t care which of ye agree. This is the temple. It’s simple, aye, but we make do with what we have. Inside are five shrines. The main shrine isn’t dedicated and ye can place offerings to whatever god ye wish, errr… well, most of them. One of the caretakers might object if’n ye try to give something to Cyric or Beshaba.

Other than that, we have a shrine to Tyr tended to by one of his own clerics. Lord Tyr is probably the most important of the gods to us up in the Dale, seeing as life is hard enough up there without tolerating those who don’t pull their weight or make a mess of things. His cleric advises us on matters of crime and punishment, so if ye have any issues with that, talk to him.

Next we have shrines to Gond and Ilmater, the gods of craft and perseverance. If’n ye don’t understand why we’d revere those two, then ye’ll never understand us. Nether has a cleric here, but both shrines are tended to acolytes who can minister if ye need it.

Last is a shrine to Tempus. Very few of us actually worship him, but we value self-reliance, even when it comes to defending yerself, so we give him his due. Sigfred cares for that shrine when he’s here, but that’s not often. He says Tempus would rather he be out seeking glory than sweeping.”

The party follows him back down the slope to the center of the village and find them surrounded by hastily-built shacks and stalls. The sounds of a hundred voices fill their ears, and a strange mix of the stench of livestock and the aromas of cooking food waft through the air. ”And here we have the market. Probably smaller than yer used to, less variety too. Ye may not find what ye want, but ye can find most things ye’ll need. Comfortable clothes instead of fancy ones, warm furs instead of luxury textiles, hot food, simple crafts… ye get the picture I’m sure. Take some time to wander about!” The party scatters, though the market is small enough where they can’t easily lose sight of each other.

Turns out Grunnar’s description was accurate. Simple crafts are readily available: amber jewelry, scrimshaw, minimalist paintings, wool tapestries and rugs, wooden and stone carvings of animals and ships, musical instruments that are plain but well-made; as well as plenty of raw materials and supplies to make additional objects.

The clothing on offer is mostly wool and lined with furs, not fancy, but warm and durable. Loose arms and legs to ensure freedom of movement, while more form fitting around the torso so that armor can be worn over them, and available in a variety of darker hues, the clothing appeals to a certain “barbarian chic” aesthetic.

Closer to the water are the food vendors. A variety of vegetables and bulk grain is readily available, as are herbs, breads, eggs, and cheeses. A few hardier fruits such as apples and pears dot the stalls, but are a bit pricier than you’d see on the continent. One stall has a large display of fresh fish available, bounty of the waters around the island and has a large smoker behind it filled with even more fish. Fresh meat on the other hand is nonexistent, though there is no shortage of dry cured and dry smoked meats, and over a dozen different types of dry sausages, many of which even Pollock hasn’t seen before.

”Take note of anything ye think ye’ll want for the larder and we’ll make sure it gets there before we depart,” Grunnar grunts, giving Pollock a friendly clap on the shoulder. He calls the rest of the group over. ”Occurs to me I haven’t properly welcomed ye to the island yet, so here it is: lunch is my treat.”

He points to the street food vendors. Most of them are serving different types of fish or meat stews, served with a side of bread; also on offer is fish, seasoned with herbs and freshly grilled or smoked, griddle cakes topped with berry compotes and yogurt, pastries both savory and sweet, and, of course, porridge topped with honey and sliced fruit.

When the party is finished at the market, Grunnar takes them to their next stop: the wharf. They arrive to find Anskaar already in drydock, the dockmaster bellowing out orders with his hands held serenely behind his back. Xyrryn approaches him with the letter and he glances at it with pursed lips before snatching it away and shoving it in his vest without bothering to read it. ”As I thought.” He turns to the party and begins speaking at no one in particular. ”I am Fengolor. No, do not speak, I do not care to know your names. I am not your friend, I am the dockmaster here at Cloudwatch.

Three hundred years I served as majordomo for Cormyri nobles. Some would say that running an estate and running a port are two entirely different things. They are wrong. Formerly I managed a household, delegated tasks to servants, and ensured the manor was in working order. Now, I manage a wharf, delegate tasks to dockworkers, and ensure ships are in working order.’ He pulls a scroll (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SIb_T4XaCaot2Jt94EG73hdeED98K9wmRy71Z4NNdtg/edit?usp=sharing) from his vest and holds it out for someone- anyone- to take. ”Should you find yourself in excess of coin, I can put it to good use by improving your ship and should you… damage it again… he shudders ”I can see it repaired. Please do try to avoid that. Remember, fast and aggressive befits a longship; strike before your foe can respond and keep them on their back foot, so to speak.

Now go, I have much to do if your ship is to sail by the deadline.” He turns away and begins to belt out orders as if the party isn’t even there.

Grunnar gestures to follow him, and once the party gets out of earshot he mutters, ”Right crazy that one is, but he can manage the port better than three normal men could.”

”One last stop, then we can hit the tavern,” Grunnar says as the group approaches an area at the north end of the settlement. The clang of metal and the smell of smoke fills the air; this could only be the smithy. Grunnar approaches two figures arguing in front of a large warehouse and greets them before turning to the party. ”Cap’n, mates… these are the two most important people in town. The halfling there is the lovely Audrey Downfellow, our quartermaster. The half-elf is Mathar Stormshear, and he runs the smithy. Don't let them fool ye, they only hate each other a little bit!”

”Shut up, old man!” Audrey snarls, giving Grunnar a quick kick in the shin. She turns to the group, pushing her long blonde bangs out of her face. ”If you’re with Grunnar, then you’re the new owners of Anskaar, right? I won’t mourn for Herald, but his passing is still a loss. Anyway, a runner already told us of Arne’s decision, so if I could just see the voucher he gave you we can get you guys properly equipped.’ When handed the letter of credit, she reads it over and passes it back. ”Perfect! Follow me. We have tools, supplies, and provisions. Now just because you’re buying on Arne’s coin doesn’t mean you can have just anything you want, but we can certainly make sure you have what you need!”

”Hold it!” Mathar shouts. ”You can’t just take them away like that without letting me say my piece!” Audrey rolls her eyes and gestures as if to say “well, we’re waiting…”

”I am Mathar, and as your crewman said, I run the smithy. We have just about everything covered. Armorsmiths, weaponsmiths, toolsmiths. People specializing in creation, specializing in repairs, modifications, enhancements… Only thing we don’t got is an enchanter. And if you want something special, we have contacts with a few master smiths. You can commission something and we’ll send away for it and let you know when it gets here.”

Are you done?” Audrey asks mockingly. Mathar only glowers at her. ”Good. You can have them back when I’m finished with them.” She takes the group into the warehouse and pulls out a ledger. ”Don’t mind him, he just hates the fact that I’m technically his boss. He's a softie deep down. Now, what do you need?”

As the group approaches the tavern they are stopped by a strange sight: two men pummeling each other. Not fighting per se, just taking turns punching each other in the face.

”Ah, yes, ye’ll like this. Especially you, Mr. Pollock!” he chuckles. ”This is a brawl, one of three types of duels we have up in the Dale. A brawl is what ye challenge someone to when yer just pissed at them fer some reason. It’s pretty simple, ye plant yer feet and just alternate blows. No fancy footwork, no special moves, no weapons, no magic, ye just take turns smackin each other until yer not angry anymore or someone goes down. Tradition is ye both buy each other a drink afterwards to smooth things over, then it’s considered done. If’n ye drop the other one and get all smug about it afterward, or if ye still hold a grudge, then yer opponent has the right to bring it up at the next thing and ye might be punished for being a right bastard about it.”

He turns to Xyrryn. ”Second type of duel is right up yer ally, Cap’n: flyting. The two combatants stand at thirty feet and take turns insulting each other before a crowd. If’n ye feel someone’s too full of ‘imself and needs to be taken down a peg, or if ye just think ye’ve found a worthy opponent and want some fun, then ye challenge em. Winner is the first to leave the other speechless or make the other concede. If no one’s won after a bit, then the crowd decides. Only rule is that ye don’t insult the gods or yer opponent’s family. Do the former and ye lose then and there, do the latter and ye might find yerself challenged to holmgang, the last kind of duel.”

The expression on his face changes to grim and he sighs. ”Holmgang is a last resort. When all attempts at mediation fails, the two take up weapons and enter the ring, and that’s that.” He trails off, staring into space for a bit.

”Well, enough of that, let’s go drink.”

The group enters the tavern to a roar of the laughter as the man behind the bar, a goliath, guffaws at one of the Neveren sailors on your crew. ”Rum? This far north? Where d’ya think we are, Baulder’s Gate? We gots beer. We gots whiskey. We gots wodka. And if you gots extra coin, we gots mead. That’s it. Don’t like it, there’s a well out back.” He spots the half-orc and grins. ”Grunnar, you old coot! The usual rye?”

”Yes, and whatever they want,” Grunnar grumbles, pointing a thumb over his shoulder at the party.

When presented with the letter of credit, the goliath grunts. ”Awwright, fair enough, I suppose. Folks around here call me Alehound, don’t ask, it’s a goliath thing. Anyway we gots drink, ‘n on the menu tonight is either bacon and potato stew or fried cod with a side of mash. This letter covers two meals a day and your first two drinks, as well as three rooms, you’ll have to pair up. Sleepin’ quarters are the buildings around the side, take whichever you want as long as you let me know which. Skalds ‘n musicans are on the stage out back if you want entertainment.”

After ordering and receiving their meals and beverages, the group makes their way out back to find a hastily constructed stage. The entertainers seem to be putting on a play of some sort. The narrator, a tall sea elf, is reciting an epic poem from a podium, while on stage a half-dozen actors silently mime the scenes as he speaks. To the right a group of minstrels play a low, soothing melody, loud enough to hear, but not to drown out the speaker.

After buying a set of warm clothes, something that he knows will allow him to fight, Sword pauses as they walk through the market, and travels over to the makers of the musical instruments. He looks at them, knowing their nature, and their function, but being eluded by what goes behind it. He walks to the proprietor and bows.

“What are these? Show me your wares, good merchant.”

Then, his voice affects that of a child. “How do you know what to play? Where does the music come from?”

Xyrryn is pretty impassive about the temple stuff, not one who's ever much bothered with the gods herself, but she pays attention anyway in case it's the kind of thing that might be important to her crew later.

While in the market Xyrryn tries to get a few sets of lighter clothes and maybe a full length fur coat or other attire for cold weather. Having struck out on a cello or trombone (not that she was expecting to find either here and wouldn't likely have been able to afford nice ones anyway), but getting a song for her trouble, she tries to acquire a metal flute. Otherwise she just generally enjoys looking around while she sings her new song.

When Grunnar offers to buy them lunch she gives him a smile and says, "Well then. Why don't we just get a bunch of everything so we can share and nobody has to miss out on trying one thing or another?" Waverly and perhaps more surprisingly Salt and Grimhild nod vigorously in agreement. When it comes time to eat, Grimhild possesses Salt so she can share in the experience. Given his lack of reaction, he's clearly used to playing host in this manner.

((Not a complete list, just what I could think of right now.))

Water (lots? Do I need to specify we want to have plenty of fresh water? Who knows.)
Any kind of citrus to fight off that scurvy
Lard (shocking) (and maybe butter if we've got a way for it to last at all) (anyway, want a good amount of this)
Salt (a lot of this as well)
Black Pepper (also want plenty)
Red Pepper (and/or paprika or other kinds of pepper)
Sugar (and/or Honey)
Root Vegetables (potatoes, beets, carrots, etc.)
Nuts (including things that are not technically nuts)
Other somewhat decently lasting vegetables (green beans, bell peppers, etc.)
Smoked/Salted Meats (as good of an even mix of stuff as we can get)
Flour (preferably mostly all-purpose, but some bread and baking flour would be good too)
Rice
Beans
Cooking oil
Yeast (y'know.... for making bread)
Cheese (as much variety as we can get)
Fruits (particularly longer lasting things like apples)
Cinnamon, Nutmeg, etc. y'know.... spices
Pickled stuff (pickles, olives, etc.)
Various other less long lasting veggies and fruits (like tomatoes or bananas which are great but are obviously going to get used immediately unless we've got canning technology or something in this setting)
Eggs
Vanilla
Chocolate
Coffee
Tea
Cream/milk/other dairy products (pretty low priority since it won't last long. Only on the list because they can be used to make other things.)
Alcoholic beverages

Xyrryn says nothing about Fengolor, her earlier comment still standing as for how she feels about the man. She takes the scroll, quickly looks it over, and passes it along. She comments, "I think the steel ram maybe should be our first priority if we want to take Fengolor's advice."

Xyrryn chuckles a bit at Audrey and Mathar's back and forth. She immediately feels a kindred spirit in Audrey as she sees just how much of Arne's coin she can spend.

((I'm not including basic stuff for Waverly or Salt since I assume they'll have whatever is standard for the ship's crew to have. What's listed here is stuff for Xyrryn personally or stuff I think might be an exception to default crew stuff that she might want Waverly or Salt to have. Not bothering with containers and such as I'm assuming that's just stuff our ship will have.))

Explorer's Pack
Whetstone
Navigator's tools
Cartographer’s tools
Cooks utensils (for Waverly to have separate from the ship's)
Pouch
Tent (2)
Map case (5)
Maps
Paper (10-50)
Ink (1-10)
Pens (1-10)
Sealing wax
Signet ring (I think she'd have to have Mathar make that for it to be a unique symbol to her)
Blank Book (captain's log)
Chest
Lock
Blankets (some light material and some thick fur, big enough for I assume the large captain's quarters bed)
Robes (though that probably happened in the market, maybe the blankets did too? *shrug*)
Sack
Climber's kit
Crowbar
Fishing tackle
Flask (3)
Waterskin (3) (this is in addition to what comes with the explorer's pack)
Grappling hook
Block and tackle
Soap (however much Audrey will give us, she doesn't trust a bunch of sailors or people she just met to remember this is a priority)
Signal whistle (3)
Chalk (10)
Bell
Hooded Lantern
Oil (however much)
Hourglass
Mechant's scale (though I figure this will mainly be a kitchen scale)
Miner's pick
Shovel
Hammer
Sledge Hammer
Iron spikes (10-50?)
Pole
Steel mirror
Ladder
Manacles (1-10?)
Hunting Traps (1-10) (This is mostly a Waverly item)
Bolts (20-100)
Chain (however much really)
Healer's kit
Books (to read, this is sort of a communal idea)
Forgery kit
Antitoxins
Potions of Healing
Alchemist's Fires
Acids
Poisons
Holy Waters
Alcohol in bottles that isn't mead or beer or the exact same kind of wine coming out of the ring.
Trained pet sharks (any kind, head mounted lasers a plus)

Xyrryn is a mixture of interested and amused the it was a priority for Icewinder culture to explain to people their formalized dueling rules. Given what she knew of them, it fit. But that made it no less amusing.

After her disappointment about the lack of rum she asks, "Is that two drinks total or two per meal or per day?" regardless of the answer, she immediately orders a vodka since it's the closest thing.

She tries to get Alehound to give her bacon and fried cod even though it's not a good combination just to get a rise out of him. (Assuming she has to wind up picking one or the other, she'll take the bacon and potato stew. Plenty of time for fried cod and mash on the ship later.) If he winds up giving her something weird like fried bacon, she'll take it without complaint and just appreciate the humor in it.

She watches the play. Afterwards she makes sure to get a word in with the sea elf and asks them if they might know of her mother (and if so what news about her they might have and if they could pass word to her mother about her father's death (though she thinks her mother already knows) and just let her know about Xyrryn's own circumstances). After that she tries to spend some time trading songs with them or the minstrels.

Despite his short attention span, Scrape is respectful while they are at the temple. He has always been fond of the teachings of Ilmater, given the suffering he has experienced, but something draws him more to Tempus now with this new life.

At the market, he enjoys looking at the trinkets but finds nothing that would make him want to give up his pearl. For lunch, he orders a fish and is appalled when they try to burn it. He takes it raw and digs in with glee. When the others look at him strangely, he replies, "What? We'll have enough salted, cured, burnt meat on the ship. Hopefully we can fish off the side, but if we don't have time, I might as well enjoy fresh fish now while I can."

He is quiet around Fengalor, letting the more experienced sailors lead any discussions with the dock master.

At the quartermaster, he gets his armor adjusted and orders some warm clothes. He normally hates the cold and would want more clothes than is practical, but lately he has been enjoying the fresh, crisp air and it doesn't seem to bother him as much. Anyway, just to be safe, he orders some warm clothes and a blanket.

His two requests are enough fishing gear for the ship and five gathered-end silk hammocks so the officers can sleep well on a rocking ship. He turns to Sword, "Perhaps we can can string a couple of these up in the crow's nest on nice nights."

Zahnan does not stay long at the temple, though he does say a quick prayer to Gond before continuing

At the market, Zahnan buys some cold weather clothes, as well as a lighter vest with many pockets for holding his tools. He inspects the craftsmanship on the ship carvings, and talks to the sellers about how they make them.

At the dockyard, Zahnan gives a message to a sailor who can pass it on to the resistance, telling them about the attack on the ship and where he is now.

Zahnan seems much more at home at the smithy then anywhere else, more accustomed to the smell of smoke then the salty sea air.
Tinker’s Tools
Jars for Oil
Mirror
Grappling Hook
Lantern
Rope

At the tavern, Zahnan orders the bacon and potato stew, as well as beer to go with it, heading out back to watch the play before heading to whatever rooms they’re sleeping in tonight.

Pollock follows along with the group as they leave Arne's office and make their way around town. While not a particularly devout Tortle, he makes a mental note to come offer thanks to Selûne and Tymora before drinking too much.

Upon reaching the market a smile cracks his beak as he takes a huge breath in through his nose. When they split to go peruse the market he makes a beeline to the nearest food stall to get some walking-around food. Savoring every bite as he walks along, he makes several purchases from the vendors before rejoining the group, chief among them a large fur and a . He asks Sword about his trip to the music vendor: if he knew how to play anything, if he purchased an instrument, and if so what he can play. He remarks to the Kenku "You know, if you think about it, there's an upside to your kind's curse: even though you can't create on your own, you Can capture perfect replicas of songs and plays as they were originally preformed by their creators. Think of that: there may be bards of your kind out there who are singing songs exactly as the were 500 years ago, passed down through the generations!" On Grunnar's offer of a free lunch, he backs up Xyrryn's idea of getting a little of everything, then after trying his share goes and buys more of the more portable dishes before continuing on.

100 pieces of chalk
50 ft silk rope
Signal whistle
Block&tackle
Fishing tackle
A sling with 100 bullets
A bed roll
A tinder box
A Dungeoneer's pack
A Healer's kit
10 flasks of oil
4 water skins
5 bars of soap

At the smithy he makes some unusual requests: a cast iron skillet made from cold iron, a reinforced and sharpenable shovel, and a hunting trap that can be moved without setting it off. He also buys an assortment of mundane items not found at the market.

10 darts
A grappling hook
10 bags of caltrops
A crowbar bar

From the Quartermaster he requests:

A goat
A cat
Food for them
Sawdust for the cat
Onions
Garlic. "A ridiculous amount of garlic, as much as you are legally allowed to give us."
Dried meats like salami, pepperoni, etc
Sherry, Marsala, and Chardonnay
All varieties of vinegar
All variety of oils

With business concluded, a slight spring enters his step as they grow closer to the tavern. He chuckles at the brawl, but makes note of it should there be further issue with Grunnar, as it seemed a more fitting fulfillment to his warning than a full-on fist fight. After meeting Alehound and hearing about their accommodations, he points out that the group is owed a double portion of dinner, due to them having had lunch on Grunnar and not the letter, though he knows that he'll be getting one of each even if he has to pay. Any odd looks from the party as to his eating habits are responded to with "Aside from the fish and fruit on the Anskaar, all I've had since I got imprisoned is gruel. Not even good gruel; like, it takes special effort to make gruel as bad as they had. And no hardtack either, just intentionally bad gruel. Don't worry, I don't eat like this when underway; it's never a good idea to be stuffed when you may be needed on deck."
Going out back to watch the play, he pours them all a drink from the Ring and stands leaning on a wall as the mummers enact their scenes. After it ends and they figure out who was sleeping where, he makes his way to the temple to pay his respects to the gods before returning to the tavern for more drinks.

"You... you one of dem bird men, right? Dem ones dey say can copy any sound? Show me, please?" He picks up a flute and blows a couple notes, marveling at the kenku's perfect mimicry.

"Dat's... somethin' else. Thank'ee, now I've someting to tell da kids when I get back ta Eastway. Anywho... It's memory. Like yer copying. I know what ta play, because I heard it before and played it before and practiced it before. Should come easy ta you. Or..."

He leans forward, frowning at Sword. "Or nah, it not come easy at all, would it? You cannae play a flute? Hold up, I tink I got someting for you." Going behind his table, he shuffles a few things around and comes up with a small drum in a harness. He demonstrates hooking it to his belt, and tapping it with only his fingers is able to play a quick song. Once finished, it places it on the table in front of Sword. "For you, my friend! No charge!"

Sword picks up the drum after exchanging words with the maker, accepting his compliments with a bow. He looks at it for a moment and then taps out the same rhythm, precisely. He furrows his brow, trying to eke something out of the instrument, and then plays the same thing again.

“Copying...” he uses the man’s phrase, somewhat deliberately.

“That is all I can do, though.” He looks for a moment with something of a wistful expression, and then back up and smiles.

“Thank you, for your gift. A gift among my people is a treasured thing, and though I cannot repay it now, it shall be done.”

He sampled the last line from one of his favourite plays, standing and bowing again, tucking the drum against his back.

Crawling through the market as if to explore every square inch, the group peruses the wares of every stall before taking up Grunnar’s offer of lunch. Purchasing a little bit of everything, they all sit down to a bit of a picnic and sample the very best of Icewind Dale’s street food, all relatively simple though tasty dishes, prepared with great care.

They then return to the market to purchase what they desire.

Sword purchases a set of comfortable fur clothes that fit underneath his breastplate. He passes the merchant a pearl and receives proper change, spending 2 gp. He also is gifted a drum that can be tied to his belt and played on the move.

Scrape picks up a similar set of clothes for 2 gp, though his are more suited to fit beneath his lighter armor.

Zahnan also grabs a set of clothing for 2 gp. He’s more selective however, and picks a suit that contains multiple pockets and has several loops sewn in to hang things off of.

Pollock decides to indulge his gluttonous side and ends up spending nearly 2 gp on food for himself before he’s through. He also pays a confused gnome merchant 1 gp for 100 pieces of chalk.

Xyrryn, as one would expect, goes all out. By the time she’s finished her shopping spree she’s spent 52 gp, 2 sp, and 5 cp, on 12 sets of fur clothes, 3 sets of robes, 10 pieces of chalk, a ladder, a 10 foot pole, and three books leaving Salt loaded with a tower of goods.

Luckily, their next top is the port, so Salt is able to relieve his burden by dumping, errr... gently placing Xyrryn’s purchases in her cabin on Anskaar.

Audrey proves to be extremely helpful and takes a mischievous delight in getting the party as much as she can without arousing Arne’s ire; she even sneaks them each a shot of malt whiskey from the Jarl’s own stash, explaining that ”I’m too good at my job for them to fire over stupid ****.”

Sword ends up requesting nothing from her, and Scrape asks only for a blanket and some hammocks. She ends up forcing a woolen blanket into Sword’s hands as well, then harangues the pair until they each agree to at least take an explorer’s kit. For good measure, she shoves a set of thieve’s tools down the back of Scrape’s trousers as they leave.

Zahnan has some simpler requests, and Audrey ladens him with a set of Tinker’s Tools, a few empty jars, a mirror, a grappling hook with 50 ft. rope attached, and a lantern.

Pollock asks for a bit more, walking away with: a bed roll, a Dungeoneer's pack, a Healer's kit, 5 flasks of oil, 3 water skins, and 5 bars of soap, and a 10 foot pole.

Meanwhile, Xyrryn again goes all out, asking Audrey to make sure Anskaar is the most “decked out” ship in the fleet. After two hours of crawling through the warehouse, she has sent to the ship a few whetstones, some Cartographer’s Tools, a pair of tents, a pair of map cases, 50 leaves of paper, 5 bottles of ink, 3 pens, a block of sealing wax, 20 feet of chain, a healer’s kit, a steel mirror, a hooded lantern, an entire crate of soap, a couple rolled-up blankets, and two barrels of lantern oil.

She also gives Xyrryn a crowbar, a grappling hook, 3 flasks and waterskins, an Exploerer’s pack, a puch, and a set of Cook’s Utensils. She thend explains that the line of credit is pretty much exhausted, and there’s not much more that can be done and sends the party back to the smithy.

Mathar proves to be competent, if less-so than Aubrey and is able to guide the group to whatever they need.

Pollock ends up with a free crowbar, 10 darts for 5 sp, a sling for 1 sp, 10 bags of caltrops for 10 gp, and 100 sling bullets for 2 sp. He then goes on to try to commission a few pieces. Asking to commission a “reinforced shovel” earns him an eye-roll from the toolsmith who just strolls over to his shed and returns with an already finished trench shovel and asks for 25 sp for it (2.5 gp). When he asks for a cold iron skillet, he’s waved off, as they don’t actually have any cold iron on hand that hasn’t already been forged into a weapon.

As for his hunting trap, the smiths assure him that they can see the usefulness of such an absurd weapon, they’re confident that none of them would be able to construct such a thing that wouldn’t be prone to breaking.

Meanwhile, Srape, Sword, and Zahnan each spend some time getting their armor adjusted and resized while a decrepit old woman wordlessly seizes Sword’s weapon and returns an hour later with it sharpened and polished like new.

Xyrryn ends up with a crowbar, sledgehammer, 5 hunting traps, 100 crossbow bolts, 10 iron spikes, a shovel, a hammer, and a bell.

She then spends 10 gp to commission a red gold signet ring, made form an alloy of half copper, half gold. The signet she requests is a shark skull, with a bone and musical note below it to form her own variation of the skull-and-crossbones.

They end the day at the tavern. Pollock’s logic doesn’t work on Alehound and he ends up shelling out 5 sp for a second meal.

Meanwhile, Xyrryn’s words end up getting turned back on her and she ends up with fried cod, topped with some of the bacon gravy from the stew. As she tips back her drink, she almost chokes on it as an unexpected sweetness hits her tongue, prompting a laugh from Alehound. ”Ha! Krupnik! My own recipe. Is good, yes?”

The sea elf doesn’t know Xyrryn’s mother, but he is happy to introduce her to the minstrels and join them in trading songs and poems.

Loaded up with everything they could get, they leave two days later on a newly-refurbished Anskaar to find what adventure awaits.

Scrape is surprised that he is excited to get back to the sea. While he had never liked water in the past, he now frequently finds himself on the bow of the ship, watching the water spray along the sides, enjoying the salty air fly past his face.

He hangs the hammocks in the captain's quarters so that one end can be untied and they can be stored out of the way during the day.

While they sail, he spends his time learning as much as he can from the crew. He'll never learn navigation but he tries to learn the tasks of the ship. He tries his hand at rowing but is laughed out by the crew for his poor performance. He takes it well and they at least appreciate the effort. He does better topside at raising and lowering of the sails and learns how to trim them to make the most of the wind. He proves valuable at climbing the rigging to rescue fouled lines and sails. Throughout all of this, he encourages the crew at their jobs and tries to learn both the language of sailing and the language of the raiders.

When he needs a break, he joins Sword in the crow's nest and watches the horizon. He feels at peace in a way he never thought he would while at sea.

The day after their arrival/shopping trip, Xyrryn goes back to Audrey and Mathar. The business part of the visit is asking Mathar, "I'm sure it's out of my ability to afford right now, but do you get any mithril here? I wear lighter armor and I've heard it's good for that. But do you think I could swim well in it?"
The not business part is just spent chatting with the two, trying to make friends with them.

Following the map given to them by Arne, the party sails towards the fort and anchors themselves a little ways off the coast to pass the time. The night before the ambush, Xyrryn calls for silence and they slip into a small cove to the south of the fort under the cover of darkness.

Shortly after noon the next day, Sword spots the transport ship on the horizon and gives a silent signal. One of the crew scampers up the mast, then returns bearing news: you have approximately 90 minutes before the target is in position.

90 minutes to prepare and plan for the attack.

https://i.imgur.com/7iG7i2s.png

You’re moored 1km (~3000 ft) from the fort, and you’re hidden, for now. Unfortunately, your intel was incorrect: the fort has two guard boats and once you sail out of the cove, you’ll be in sight of the fort and they’ll send them both to attack you. The guardships are both keelboats that have been outfitted with a few extra pairs of oars and will likely be faster than other ships of their class.

The fort is a wooden stockade on an elevated cliff and has a garrison of an unknown size. You sighted multiple siege weapons on the rise and estimate that due to their height advantage they would be able to hit you if you got within 1,200 ft of the fort.

Scrape enjoyed the sailing down to the cove but is even more excited to get into combat. This is also a new feeling for him. He was never afraid of a fight but in the past he was more cautious. Fights made him nervous even when he was confident. Now he isn't necessarily confident of the outcome, but he wants to get going with the fight.

When Sword spots the oncoming transport ship, Scrape finds the others officers to discuss our options. "We will have to fight all three ships at some point. Perhaps it is better not to fight them all at the same time. Maybe we could lure the guard ships out and fight them before the transport ship arrives. If we push out now and set sail to intercept the transport ship, we can either sail quickly to intercept that first, or sail slowly and let the guard ships catch us before the transport ship arrives, depending on how quickly the guard ships react. I think we should take the fights as far away from the fort as possible."

Gathered on deck with the rest of the officers, a wicked grin splits Pollock's beak as a gleam enters his eye. "Well, I say we strap a few lit torches to the barrels of oil we've got and launch em at the guard boats; don't think they'll be doing much fighting if they have to put out fires all over the deck, and even if we only hit one, that evens the odds."

During the voyage
Fix the wand of fear and make it an arcane firearm
At 5th level, you know how to turn a wand, staff, or rod into an arcane firearm, a conduit for your destructive spells. When you finish a long rest, you can use woodcarver's tools to carve special sigils into a wand, staff, or rod and thereby turn it into your arcane firearm. The sigils disappear from the object if you later carve them on a different item. The sigils otherwise last indefinitely.
You can use your arcane firearm as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells. When you cast an artificer spell through the firearm, roll a d8, and you gain a bonus to one of the spell's damage rolls equal to the number rolled.

He had been sharpening his sword, checking it for marks and polishing them up high in the crow’s nest before sighting the ship. After a while he descends, walking towards the meeting of other officers of the ship. He waits patiently, listening and nodding, in the end though his attention falls to the captain.

“Your steel waits to be drawn. Name your target.”

No matter the target, the simplicity of his statement yields the impression that no matter where he is sent, many, many will fall.

"A good enough plan, but let's discuss a bit." Xyrryn replies. After a bit of discussion with the officers she summarizes, "Ok so like Scrape said we'll make it look like we plan to ram the transport to lure out the guard ships. When they get close enough we turn about, but stay out of range of the fort. Then we target the one to starboard with the mangonel and one of the ballista, and the one to port with the other ballista. Zhanan and Scrap light up the one to port when its gets in range and we improvise from there. When we're finished with the guard ships we turn about and ram then board the transport."

Scrape is getting excited for the fight. The thought of killing these Neverenders and throwing their bodies into the sea makes him happier than he thought it would.

"Once we turn, we might get several chances to attack with each ballista and the mangonel. We should try to take out their steery things first so they can't turn back. Then we can ram the starboard one and set fire to the port one. Which way is port again? Left? Got it."

Their plans carefully laid, the crew of Anskaar wait quietly, sails furrowed, activity on deck to a minimum, keeping the ship as low-profile as possible.

As the cargo ship rounds the coast, it drops its sails, the crew scrambling about the deck in a panic.

Spotted, Anskaar springs it’s trap. Opening sails to full and readying the oars, it catches an Eastern Wind and flies out of the bay. A stone flies from the mangonel and crashes against the transport’s side; once, than twice before Sword calls out again, pointing towards the fort.

The Neverens scrambled their defenses and launched the two guard boats which are rowing furiously towards Anskaar, spreading themselves out to try and hit it with a pincer attack. Xyrryn grins and swings Anskaar to the north, ordering the crew to drop half the sails and run the oars, making for the north.

The fort is 2000 ft. to the north, the guard boats are 1000 ft. to the north, 500 ft. apart from each other and rowing south. The target ship is 500 ft. to the southwest, stopped for the moment as the crew tries to get control of the ship after it’s sudden stop.

Xyrryn is currently at the helm, the other 4 party members may take primary control of Anskaar’s weapons if they like and the crew will assist them in reloading them between turns.

Pollock, having never used or even seen a seige weapon, opts to let the crew handle the firing of one of the ballistae. Grabbing his bucket and a ladle as they wait to make their move, he circles around the deck, giving each man and woman a sip of Elven wine for what could well be their last drink, to both raise their morale and steady their nerves. His bucket empty, he makes his way to the bow of the ship, pulling a length of chain from his belt satchel as he stands at the point where the ram meets the deck, eager to be the first one to meet the Neveren in melee combat.

As the Anskaar turns towards the guardships, Scrape and Kappa start implementing their plan.

"OK Kappa, I'll let you do it. Here cover yourself in some oil too. I could only find this 3 gallon waterskin so it will have to do. Use the knife in the tinderbox to cut the bag right over the helm. Then light yourself on fire and land in the oil. Then, yes, you can make yourself visible and tell them about Olhydra's plans for them. Good luck."

Kappa gets into the bucket of the mangonel, grabs the waterskin in one hand, the tinderbox in the other, and turns invisible. The crew laughs at this crazy plan.

Scrape turns to the crew of the mangonel, "OK let's load him up. Try to land him right on the ship. Let's do this quickly so we can get back to attacking the other ship. On 3. 1...2...Fire!"

Kappa and the waterskin go flying through the air at the targeted ship.

"OK, let's focus on the other one for now." The crew reloads the mangonel with proper ammunition and points it at the other guard ship.

We will shoot Kappa at the ship to our port and see if this plan works.

Roll for the mangonel shot to see how close they get to the target. [roll0]

The three ships begin to close distance as Kappa is sent off into the sky and Anskaar begins to rain mangonel shots at the starboard keelboat. It misses three times before landing a solid hit on deck. The boats return each with a single ballista shot. One goes wide while the other sinks into Anskaar’s side.

Xyrryn spins the ship towards the starboard, heading towards shore to keep their foes at a bit of a distance.

Just then, Kappa implements his plan. He lights himself and lands on the deck of the portside guard boat and the effect is immediate. Bright flames leap into the air, closely followed by belching black smoke. He begins to give a speech, but much to his utter disappointment is ignored by the crew as they scramble around, looking for something, anything, to put out the fire.

As Scrape continues to watch through Kappa's eyes, he asks the crew for help. "Wake me when we get within 300' of our target and I'll start knocking them off their ship."

Kappa gives his speech, "You will all die by flame, sword or drowning today. Olhydra will show you no mercy!" Disappointed that no one seems to care to hear about their imminent death, he then, still burning himself, turns invisible again and flies to the sails, grabbing onto them at about their mid-height in order to catch them on fire. He moves around the sails to set fire at frequent intervals. If the crew figures this out and tries to target Kappa, Scrape will dismiss him.

Once they are in range of the fire ship, Scrape stops using Kapa's senses. They are still connected telepathically so he tells Kappa, "Let me know if you see anything unusual. If you get in trouble, just tell me and I'll dismiss you."

He then starts casting Eldritch Blast at the crew of the fire ship, trying to disrupt them as much as possible.

Scrape stops using Voice of the Chainmaster to see and hear through Kappa.

He starts shooting at the crew of the ship. Priorities are 1. Anyone who looks like thy might target Kappa 2. Anyone trying to fight the fire 3. Whoever is at the siege weapons 4. Whoever is at the helm 5. anyone else he might be able to knock all the way off.

The crew of the flaming guardboat begins to get more frantic as their sails begin to light fire. Using everything in their disposal to right the flames, they stomp it, cover it with wet blankets, even pour water directly on it Just as they seem to start turning the proverbial tide, two cracking bursts of energy streak across the deck, knocking a pair into the water. Ignoring their captain's attempts to rally them, they begin to abandon the burning boat, leaping into the water and swimming for shore.

The captain continues to scream t them, but is silenced by the sound of a ballista shot whizzing past his head and jumps in after them.

Undeterred by the rapid defeat of it's sister ship, the second guard boat loads up another shot and fires it into Anskaar's side.

Xyrryn raises an eyebrow in surprise as the crew abandons ship on the first of the guard boats, but then shrugs. Their lack of morale (or maybe just keen intuition to know this is a fight they wouldn't have won anyway), was her crew's gain. As she whirls Anskaar about to line it up to pass close by and then swing around the remaining guard ship she calls out to those on deck, "Prepare for battle, we're going to close the guard ship and then ram the transport!" and the she begins singing a song to get the blood pumping. (Of course with the usual musical backup of Waverly, Salt, and Grimhild.)

Seeing the crew jump off of Kappa's ship, Scrape turns his attention to the other guard ship, trying to knock the crew off that one as well.

Meanwhile, Kappa flies down to the helm and tries to guide his ship into its mate, hoping the flames will engulf them both. Since it was already heading in that direction, he's hoping to be able to direct it without any adjustments to the burning sails.

While he pilots the burning ship, he laughs maniacally, calling out to the crew of the other ship, "All who oppose Olhydra will die today! Fear for your very souls!" However, with the sails burnt away and no one left to use the oars, the boat slows and stops. Kappa sits at the helm of the ship, jumping up and down in anger, and cursing his inability to use his ship as a flaming projectile. He then tries to run around the deck to stop the sails from burning away. He curses his bad luck and yells again at the other guard ship. "This isn't the end! I will figure out how to burn your ship and send you to your grave!"

As Xyrryn turns towards the remaining guard boat, they make a hard turn to starboard, trying to keep their distance. There's some activity on deck as they seem distracted by just how quickly their sister ship was defeated. Their confusion isn't helped by Scrape's Eldritch blasts; one knocks the helmsman from his perch, but he manages to keep himself from toppling overboard and one of his fellows takes his place. The second, aimed at the man behind the ballista misses, instead hitting the weapon itself to little effect.

They fire a third shot from their ballista that flies wide.

Scrape looks at the 90' gap and the fact that we likely won't ram this guard ship with the transport ship still loose. He decides that helping Polluck and Sword get on board the guard ship is more important than blasting its crew right now, so he casts a spell, manipulating a small feather in his component pouch.

"Lumipad na hangin"

Polluck and Sword feel their feet lift off the deck and somehow know that they can control their speed, direction, and elevation without touching the ground.

Scrape calls out to them, "Polluck and Sword, you have 10 minutes. Enjoy your wings, Sword!"

Meanwhile, he dismisses Kappa from the burning wreckage. Kappa might need a few minutes to calm down after being thwarted from his plan to use the burning ship as a torpedo.

Sword needs no more encouragement than the words that held promise of something he has yearned for. He has heard of clansmen who have served dubious masters for the promise of magic like this...but this was freely given by a companion. He charges towars the guard boat, at the last second leaping forward, embracing the pull of Scrape’s magic as he flies.

It is glorious, and if he had less discipline, he would revel like a child learning to walk as he felt the ancient loss flare to life, as if he knew how right this was and how it had been taken. Discipline though, he did have. He turns slightly, flying in an arc directly towards the helm of the guard boat.

He lands in a spin, his blades coming out as he hits the deck. He lashes out at the nearest foe, announcing his presence with steel.

Seeing the guard boat attempting to circle around them in turn, Xyrryn makes a hard turn to port, putting the wind at Anskaar’s back and sending it lurching towards the other ship.

A jar of oil flies out of Zahnan’s hand, crashing against the guard ship’s helm, splashing oil everywhere as his cannon roars, knocking the helmsman away.

Reveling in his sudden meeting with the sky, Sword drops onto the deck of the guard ship, with a slash of his longsword, cleaving deep into the nearest Neveren as he landed. Without stopping his motion, he spins around fully in place and lops the boor bastard’s head off with another swing.

Pollock lands on the ships deck hard, then stands to his full height and throws a punch at the nearest sailor that misses entirely, then spins around and grabs the sailor manning the ballista.

The guard boast is now 45' away, heading south, perpendicular to Anskaar's path.

As the original helmsman climbs up to the rudder to replace his now absent replacement, he is pummeled by two more shimmering blasts from Scrape, which are immediately followed up by a concussive blast from Zahnan that sends him crumpling to the ground. The second helmsman gets to his feet and makes for the rudder, but is stopped as Sword swoops in and lashes out twice with his longsword, making two deep cuts and leaving the man bloodied and angry.

Just then, the boat is rocked as a pair of ballista bolts slam into its side; the first bounces off harmlessly, but the second sinks deep, splintering the wood.

Meanwhile, at the bow, a shriek splits the air as Kyrryn’s distorted voice rattles the ballista and sends everyone around it to their knees.

Once his ears stop ringing and he’s able to see again, Pollock grabs a second sailor. He attempts to shove the first one he grabbed to the ground, but the sailor manages to keep his feet. Realizing that the two sailors in his grasp are too heavy to drag together, he shoves one prone and unleashes a series of blows on him before letting him go, then takes back to the air with the remaining one and flies past the railing, dropping the poor fool in the water before heading back and looking for smaller targets so he can drop more than one at once.

Extra Attack with Advantage [roll0] or [roll1] +8 Damage [roll2] +5

Zahnan continues to attack the crew of the guard ship, firing his crossbow at one of the crew attacking Pollock, and his cannon firing at one of the helmsmen as the ballista continue to lay down fire on the guard ship, attacking the transport’s sails with the mangonel

Sword ducks under his opponents’ blows, his naked sword uneccessary to completely block the incoming attack but he used it to effect to slide the opponent’s blows at an awkward angle, setting himself up for a return strike. A disciplined warrior would not have been so distracted but Sword was learning that their discipline wavered when in pain.

[roll0] + 8 = 21
Damage = [roll1] + 5 = 14

[roll2] + 8 = 11
Damage = [roll3] + 5 = 14

Sword slashes across finishing his opponent in a heartbeat and then looks to survey the boat, finding the next strategic target and jumping to reclaim the skies once more, however temporary, to fly towards the target.

Sword squares off against his opponent once more, leveling his sword in preparation for the next exchange.

Xyrryn, mainly focused on steering the ship at the moment, shifts the pitch in her song so that it finds its way over to one of the enemy crew. More as a sudden distraction than anything else.

Vicious Mockery at one of the enemies. Just on one of them that's near Sword or Pollock. Preferably whichever has more guys engaged with them.

DC 16 Wis save for [roll0] psychic damage and disadvantage on their next attack.

The ungrappled sailor near Pollock barely manages to get a strike in before he is pummeled by a pair of blasts from Scrape, sending him slamming into the gunwale of the ship. Freed from his predicament, Pollock throws one of his victims to the ground and stomps on the man, before flying overboard and dropping the second into the water.

On the other side of the ship, Sword cuts deep into his opponent’s chest. Barely holding on to his sword, the sailor runs around and begins stumbling towards a crate towards the back of the ship. Seeing this, the second combatant pulls out a wand. It glows briefly as he casts a spell, then he makes for the side of the ship to jump overboard, getting blasted towards the side of the ship by Zahnan’s cannon as he does so..

Seeing Pollock safe for the moment, Xyrryn focuses her song on the man Scrape had just nailed with his spell. He shakes his head as he pulls himself up from the gunwale, gasping as a crossbow bolt whizzes by his head.

As this is all going on, Zahnah directs the ballistae to continue their assault on the guardship. Two bolts fired, two bolts land against the ship with a crunch.

The rowers cease their movement, and the guard ship slows to a stop.

Scrape pops up again, this time shooting both blasts at the spellcaster. As he does so, a spectral tentacle rises up out of the deck of the ship and attempts to grab the spellcaster.

Apply Lance of Lethargy to decrease his movement by 10'.

Use repelling blasts to keep him away from the near side of the ship but not to knock him towards the far side.

#1 [roll0] for [roll1] damage

#2 [roll2] for [roll3] damage

Bonus action for grasp of the deep.

[roll4] for [roll5] cold damage and decrease movement a further 10'

Hopefully that's a lot of concentration checks.
