Started early, yes. Had one I didn't finish from last year that I'm going to polish off.

Shooting for more than the 50k, though. Probably closer to 75k.

No way -- I'll be too busy working on my other novel, of which I've written* about 15,000 words, and I'm aiming for 100,000. I don't care whether I get it done within the month or not -- sorry to chicken out -- it's the quality that's important as I really care about getting it published.

*Actually, I've written the whole thing and I'm rewriting it now. Which is a lot easier in some ways, but more tedious in others, and just as time-consuming.

Here's a random question for those of you with more writing experience than me. How do you figure out how many words something will be? I've seen 50k, 75k, and 100k words mentioned, but I have no idea how you get those numbers. Is that just something you learn from experience?

Syka
2007-10-31, 11:27 PM
50k is just a random goal. It's enough to make a novelette but not too much to make it impossible. The average amount of words in a novel really varies by genre. I think young adult is between 75-100k, horror averages 120. It really varies.

As for me, currently 584 words in in 10 minutes. Go me! I think sleep now. Seeing as I have class and that is about a third of what I need to make the days goal.

Cheers,
Syka

Hmm

Not much of a writer myself, but I've often thought about it. I know I would end up doing Sci-fi, with a world with so much detail that people can't really make sense of it until they finish the book...probably not a good thing.

Nonetheless, I'd probably end up styling it a little like the Reality Dysfunction trilogy. A large number of different storylines/characters which meet up at different points in the overall story.

The standard on which the 50,000 word goal was based was Chris Baty, the founder of NaNoWriMo, pulling the smallest book he still considered a novel off of his shelf (Aldous Huxley's Brave New World), and doing a rough count of the words.

I've got an 8 page research paper due mid month, a group presentation the end of the month, a 6 page paper due beginning of December, a big test midway through November, a final beginning of January, next weekend is devoted to friends, a week off for Thanksgiving which will be bust...

But, the biggest predictor of not winning NaNo is not starting. If I remember the numbers correctly, most people who start end up finishing. :) So give it a try. If you can't, try again next year. If you do, you might surprise yourself.

I achieved enlightenment and pounded out a cool 700 words. I seem to be petering out now, so I'll just go for 1,000 and stop. It's not a good daily rate, but now that I have some idea what my story's about, I can brainstorm during the day and write more at night.

The last two look better to me. I'm gonna vote for Ahmed just because Ahkmed is how Carlos Mencia pronounces it.

--

I sat down an hour ago not even knowing my main characters names. Then I decided that they'd find an unexploded nuklear device in the first chapter. Then I named my characters. Now I'm at 546 words and having a grand ole time. I'd like to hit 2000 tonight, but it's not a big deal if I don't.

Just out of curiosity what's a good number of words for a chapter? I realize it should be more about the content of what happens than the number of words, but I write with very few words and just realized that this thing may end up being 150-200 chapters if I don't stretch them a little.

I always have the same problem. I think I'm going to give the Terry Pratchett approach (no chapters) a go, and maybe add them in later, once I can see the whole and divide it up into neat sections.

No clue about the chapter thing. I just divided up where I think it would go.

Right now I sit at a cool 3,099 words for the first day, which is great for me. I'm hoping for another thousand before the night is out. Maybe two if I can convince myself. I figure if I can get 5k a day this weekend I'll be able to take Thanksgiving off. Hopefully I'll be able to finish my homework for this weekend as well, which shouldn't be too terrible.

...where did you get that meter?
Made it myself. Though currently the script is not advanced enough to make different outputs.

Anyone want to do a word war?
Yikes! That sounds like way too much pressure...

Nah. It actually worked out really, really well for both of us. We did two wars, each for 10 minutes. Both of us got around 500 words each of those 10 minutes, so that made a tidy sum that we got done very quickly.
I recommend that method to anyone- it really gets you going (and I didn't feel any pressure, really).

Yeah, they can be a lot of fun too. It makes noveling a group experience. :) I swear to God, the only reason I finished last years NaNo is I used the NaNo chat room for word wars. I think I was in there 5 hours on the day of my last push, with the mindset, "Just X more word wars and I'll finish." Plus it helps you find out how fast you can type.

Cheers,
Syka

I'll have to give that a try... I'm having the hardest time getting motivated to write. And slowly falling farther behind.
Anyone up for it?

I am in desperate, dire need of a reader to tell me that what I'm writing makes sense.

*turns up Tori Amos*

Well, okay, maybe not total sense, but is at least coherent. Any takers?

I'll do it. Since my NaNo hasn't gotten off the ground I might as well help someone whose has...

Awesome. I'll email it to the address in your profile. It'll be titled "Whiplash/Amnesia".

You should. You're only... *counts* 9,996 words behind.

Technically 8,335. 10,002 tomorrow. Hehe.

I hit my goal of 15k tonight...Barely, and it took a wordwar to get me on a roll. Hopefully tomorrow, after doing some homework, I'll be able to get at least 3k in. I can only hope.

Cheers,

I am at:
7,720 (only 613 behind target for yesterday)

Today I have to write 2,280 to get back on track. =S.

2273 here. Work picked a terrible time to give me a weekend of broken servers. *Le sigh*

I'm still hanging in there though. I have the last two weeks of the month off. As long as I still have momentum then I should be all set.

I'm trying, but I started 5 days late and only have 1,544 words. I have high grammar and vocab standards, so the quantity over quality will be a challenge... and means I'm far too embarrassed to post mine anywhere. Still, this month is cool and trying to keep to the goal will hopefully given me motivation to practice writing a lot. Even if all I get is practice and perhaps a couple of good parts of a story, it'll have been worth it.

I am at 6k.

I have done 200 words in the past two days.

I think it might be time to ignore the homework and get writing...

But I hate my novel. I'm thinking of restarting it. Which would be interesting.

My favorite progress bar is working (turns out the NaNo site just needed to get the wordcount API up). It can be found here (http://pinkness.freepgs.com/nanowrimo/). Find you're user ID by clicking on view profile and it should be at the end of the URL. :)

<3 this progress bar.

Hey, just thought I'd check up on everyone since we just passed the halfway mark. :)

Hope writing is coming well. Maybe next year I'll try to organize something, something kind of like a 'virtual' municipal laison. Meetings in a chat room and the like to have write ins and encouragement and all. Anyone interested in that?

Cheers,
Syka

'Gratz Syka on passing the half way mark.

I, on the other hand, am nowhere. 6k words still. -_-

I didn't make it, I'm afraid. Didn't connect with the subject enough, and writing became just another chore pretty early on.

Next year I'll spend October brainstorming instead of coming up with a seat-of-the-pants topic on Halloween.

Well, I committed NaNoWriMoside:

I had this really elaborate plan for a great novel, and it was all planned out and such. I had these cool little details that I wanted to work in, a setting, theme enviroment, basic beginning, middle, and end, and then it hit me.

I realised that THAT novel is not something that I can force myself to write at a pace that would work for NaNoWriMo. It is a novel that requires a lot of carefully selected foreshadowing, and hiding facts just under the surface and such.

So.....

I started over. I decided that I needed to pick a topic where I could write a lot of words per day and not really have to think too much. So what did I decide?

I call is my NaNoWOWMo. I'm writing my novel about all of my different World of Warcraft characters and their quest together to stop the evil warlock that threatens Azeroth. And since I know next to nothing about the history/lore of Azeroth, I'm taking total creative liberties to create/destroy/muck things up from the game world as I please.

I'm sitting at just under 10,000 words at the moment, and I have a lot of time to write this weekend (The Black Friday sales around these parts aren't any good this year).

Good luck all.

I think I'm starting again tomorrow as well.

The novel I've been (trying) to do is so crap...And restarting will just make it better...

So with the two free days I have off school tomorrow () I'll be trying to write 30kish words...:smalleek:

G'luck with your novel Torm.

Yeeeah...Thanksgiving break has gotten me behind by about 5k, along with the homework I've been having to do. :smalleek: I'm hoping to catch up in the next week and should be going to a write in on Thursday evening with some friends, so it's all good.

Sorry for the double post, but I've got news...kinda. I did make it over the 40k mark but that's not the news.

I went to a Final Push write in for my region and our ML had organized a couple motivational speakers who were local published authors. One of them is a horror author. I just happen to write horror (not always by choice...) After he spoke I got a chance to speak with him, as well as his email address and some information on the horror market and guilds to join. This makes me feel a bit more confident about this whole writing thing.
