if there were a way to take a spell from personal to touch or range, would it's applicable "target" become any creature hit at that point?

are there other ways to sneak around the specific target limits of spells, like going from "living creature within x range" to "all within area" or something similar?

Simply put, runes made with Inscribe Rune. Any divine spell the maker of the rune can prepare can go into a rune, no limits on range. You touch the rune to trigger it and become the target of the spell.

Runes made by a Runecaster can be set to trigger whenever a creature passes within 30 feet of them, creature passing becomes the target. Thus, from personal range to 30 feet range.

Craft Contingent spell lets you make contingent any spell you want on any one creature you want. The negative is that you can't apply them on the go.

The above is also a way to get Persistent Spell on spells such as Summon Monster (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/summonMonsterI.htm). Normally, Summon Monster isn't persistable, because it has variable range. Unfortunately, the standard optimization trick around this (i.e. Ocular Spell metamagic) doesn't work on Summon Monster, because Ocular Spell only works on Rays or spells with a non-Personal target, and Summon Monster has no "Target" field.

Instead, put Summon Monster inside a rune, and then trigger it. Summon Monster gets cast with a target here, so Incantatrix can use Metamagic Effect to apply Ocular Spell to this casting after it's cast. Better yet, just apply Persistent Spell to begin with, since the rune gave it a fixed 30 foot range. Enjoy your 24 hour summons (although at the cost of crafting a rune). :smalltongue:

Spell-storing items can be used to change the target of a spell:

Attune Gem (Magic of Faerun) or Focal Stone spell (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/wn/20040225a).
Skull Talisman (Frostburn).
Shallantha's Delicate Disk (Lost Empires of Faerun).
Chardalyn (Lords of Darkness/Silver Marches Web Enhancement)

The other way to hack the target line of spells is to use Channel Spell, usually via Spellsword or Ordained Champion.

Both of these are definitely about as close to what i'm after as can be. Mad crazy that neither specify that they have to be valid targets for this to take place

Spell Storing rings make this easy. Cast, pass ring, cast, pass ring, and repeat.

wait a second, both attune gem and possibly channel spell (ordained champ preferred, infinite uses lol) should technically allow you to target a... creature... with animate objects, shouldn't they? would you then be able to command said animated body to attack itself, despite the mental commands of the soul trapped inside?

While it is 3.0... Use Minor Servitor Instead. Now there's a magically conjured, free-willed, friendly-to-you conscious mind in there too. Does it replace or compete with the existing consciousness currently piloting the body?

This concept amuses me. Esp. as a set of resetting magic traps or some such other repeating process allows one to juts keep cramming more and more minds into one body...
