According to the core rules, the Ranger / Druid spell Animal Friendship requires the caster to be genuinely friendly toward the animal and to have no intentions to exploit or hurt it.
So, if a Ranger uses his animal companions ( ravens, howls, mices and similar small, easily unnoticed animals ) as sentinels, spies, explorers and similar non fighting / dangerous tasks, and always provides them food if needed and return them to their territory if they moved, can he keep taking and leaving animal companions as he travels the wide world?
