According to the core rules, the Ranger / Druid spell Animal Friendship requires the caster to be genuinely friendly toward the animal and to have no intentions to exploit or hurt it.

So, if a Ranger uses his animal companions ( ravens, howls, mices and similar small, easily unnoticed animals ) as sentinels, spies, explorers and similar non fighting / dangerous tasks, and always provides them food if needed and return them to their territory if they moved, can he keep taking and leaving animal companions as he travels the wide world?

I see no reason why not? This is definitely an "ask your DM" question, but you're not throwing them in a meat grinder or anything, and they don't seem to be any worse off after helping you than they were before.

The spell mentions that the rigorousness of adventuring only allows you to maintain friendship with half the total HD of animals. So you should be fine. Use of the spell in 3.5 is defunct as both druid and ranger have the animal companion class feature.

Of course. “Friendly” and “loyal” aren’t synonyms.
