Cloud play is the successor to PBEM, it's basically... that, without the actual email. More convenient, but still the same speed.

For what it's worth, I'd potentially be down for a live game if anyone wants to schedule one, but it seems like these thread games are all cloud games.

"This..... Polish beacon, has been allegedly developed by an advanced civilization, and sent to all worlds suitable for human life. It tells the tales of their world, of glory and peace, and hope.

"It tries to give advancements for any primitive humans, but....this beacon is strange and wrong. It tries to suggest that the science of building mud based containers to hold grain, domestication of the savage animals, the harvesting of mineral wealth, and the building of a sort of..... string based projectile that launches pointed sticks for combat. And yet.... I can envision the first three, even if I do not know how to build them yet. But cannot even imagine how the last would work.

"Furthermore the beacon suggests that we would have no way to build things that could go across the water.... But why not? Wood obviously floats, perhaps enough wood would allow a person to cross the large lake of our capital. And that we have no way of studying the stars, but why couldn't we. We can see them at night, shining bright. This beacon may be strange and wrong, but it's build is far more advanced then any that we could ever dream of..... We have called our new home, Alexandria, after the so called Polish capital.

Thank you for shopping with YesterdayCorp! Your type-3 franchise startup kit has been delivered to the coordinates you specified1 and is ready to operate! Just follow the instructions and in no time at all2 you'll be turning a profit! Priority number one should be finding a suitable location to base your first habitation! Pay attention to fresh water supply and easily exploitable local resources3. Remember, what takes thousands of years to grow can be chopped down and repurposed in hours!

-A brighter future, Yesterday!

1: Actual delivery may vary from projections. YesterdayCorp takes no responsibility for unplanned water landings, excessive ice, or active volcanoes near delivery site.

2: Plus or minus 4,000 years.

3: Excessive harvesting of local resources may cause long-term environmental effects. YesterdayCorp takes no responsibility for rising sea levels, increased storms, or the earth withering beneath you into dust and ash.

We started in what would normally be a pretty decent spot... except that we're Mali, so we'd really prefer desert! There's a big one west of me that's really tempting, so I'm going to spend two or three turns trying to position myself somewhere on the edge of the desert so that I have a few good tiles to work but also get that sweet free faith and food.

Hello stranger, I am Minerva the Wise, guardian of the Swedes. I hope that my men find you in a charitable mood. My people come from the Peninsula of Desolation to greet you this day.

From time immemorial, the Swedish people have inhabited this, um, "beautiful" peninsula.

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1690499922137985198/0EC6ABC93AA33229D55D3AA15F90C6EA7C23859B/

The early years were tough. Our people were beset by a horde of tundra barbarians. Our only neighbor for years, the independent state of Vilnius. In time, the suffering of our people ended and we were able to discover the means of production. Perhaps one day this will be a productive land.

We then turned our eyes westward, for there must be something beyond the mountain range.

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1690499922137985357/CF5DCEBE3B38973DA1D2AEC9B4A31A32466D96B7/

Though harsh, this tundra promises salt deposits. We shall season our meats yet!

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1690499922137985480/E6CBC4B19D468AFB28FC08076755572F4E2C788B/

Here we see the edge of our peninsula, the Torne River. We shall establish this as our westmost boundary upon further negotiations with the strangers to the south.

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1690499922137985702/D30AA25F62CB6CC4BEDAD583A2B1B3FC1439759C/

Thanks to some friendly peoples, we discovered an island to our east. We shall settle it and seek further lands eastward!

--------------------------------

At first, I pegged this as a garbage start. Only one hill anywhere near my start location, a coastal capital (I'd rather city 3 be coastal), and lots of floodplains. But it is somewhat turning around. I may be able to salvage the start and set up something somewhat functional. I can fit 3-4 more cities on the peninsula and then I need to find somewhere else to settle. Hopefully Eurus is a better neighbor than I was in 3.

For anyone not familiar with Civ 6's religion mechanics, there's a religious belief called Work Ethic. It used to be weak, but it got buffed to make your religion's holy sites generate production equal to their total adjacency bonus. Combined with a pantheon that gives you better adjacency bonuses and a policy card that doubles them...

YesterdayCorp, you have encroached on our ancestral sacred lands by crossing the Torne River and trespassing onto the Peninsula of Desolation. Withdraw your Crabby archers from our side of the river before any more die by our hands.

So about Eurus being a better neighbor than me in 3? Yeah, no, I'm probably doomed. I've seen three archers surround my city and am vastly outnumbered so far. But, I've got walls around the city, an extra two archers inbound, and three horsemen coming to the rescue. May Victor be promoted soon so I can better defend my turf.

Thus far, we have held thanks to horsemen, simple stone walls, and crossbows. Meanwhile, we face crossbows of their own, iron swords, catapults, mercenaries known as Nihang, even strange armored horsemen who guard their merchants. It is rumored that they are on the verge of discovering powerful siege guns to tear down our walls. We are roughly even for now, but they will soon overpower my meager cities. By my count, they have ten well founded cities to my struggling six. Not only do they have more production capability than us, they have better lands too. The harsh tundra and snow of the Peninsula of Desolation is near worthless compared to the lush floodplains and hills of their side of the Torne River.

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1661228426235706938/0FDFFCF3E5BA5E0701B33F4E385836B248B4146D/

Here's the warfront. Our forces have captured another forward settling crew. Perhaps we shall settle into the snow, if only to spite our tormentors. Note the southern horsemen, they are blocking an encampment from being constructed on our doorstep.

On a side note, we had hoped to hire Vilnius's troops to supplement our own. Unfortunately, they are incredibly expensive and no longer factor into our plan.

https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1661228426235707162/191EAE34E1778B3FEC56791166080B66D6B8CD11/

(Why Eurus has decided that he needs my lands for any reason other than revenge for 3 is confusing to me. Still, if I can somehow survive long enough to start pushing back, I'm gunning for the entire continent.)

The last hope of the Swedes. If we can sail across the ocean perhaps we will find our way out of here.

------------

I'm in a very bad spot. I have no good options for where to settle on my side of the river and flat out don't have the production capability to fight back for long. If my city falls, I won't be able to fight back.

Well you see, the reason I use Victor is that he gives a free promotion to any unit built in the city. For instance if I still had him, the swords of Venice would be +7 combat strength higher against cities.

In addition, he can give spies a promotion.

The Peninsula of Desolation continues to be consumed by war. Fortunately, our forces have managed to secure a foothold on our border. Our Carolean initiative has produced results, their strength has allowed us to force the enemy back.

However, we recently attempted to push toward Kangaba, Our troops were swiftly rebuffed and sent packing. This war is nothing but a stalemate.

Goteborg remains strong. The walls took some scratch damage, but we have repaired them. The campus district remains ruined from the initial assault, but otherwise we continue to hold the line.

Snow Way Out stands as an insult to Mali. We had captured one of their settlers, so we chose to plant a city on the ice. There's nothing of note here other than securing the northern border. Perhaps it will help our open air museums once we discover them.

----------------------

This war is nothing but a stalemate. I can't push out, but I can keep Eurus off my border. At this point, I'm probably relegated to playing kingmaker with Illven.

Malians. You make no attempts at communication, no attempts at formal diplomacy, the only words we have heard from your people are the words of war from Swedish refugees.

And you have the audacity to demand friendship of us.

I'll give you my answer at Cannon speed. Alliance ships move in! Save the Destiny Ascension.

Although our formal country formed frigates are no longer an option. Should we wish to not pollute the world, we have the option of hiring private ships from our citizens to put into our fleets.

However, Reyna has recommended that we focus on our economy to produce more of our battle class ships. We have named the first two, Warsaw, and Seoul.

And even as we speak our cities are producing even more Battle class Ships. Operation Thanix will be successful.

My government offers a formal military alliance between our two nations. May our knowledge of warfare prove useful to you.

Oof. Korea was beating everyone pretty handily in the tech race already (because, I mean, it's Korea; that's what they do), and Sweden has apparently decided to back them. I don't think Korea even needs to do much at this point. Mali and Sweden are stuck in the thunderdome of this continent and stalemated, if Korea can just wreck stuff up for a while I'll fall even more behind and if they take some cities their lead will get even bigger.

Sadly, I'm just really bad at war. After the way the last game went I was pretty sure that trying to peacefully expand wouldn't be enough, and I believe I was right -- I've never been able to catch up with Korea's science this game, even with as many cities as I could settle. But the war also went poorly and just kinda fizzled out, partly due to the geography and partly because I'm not very good at it.

I didn't actually declare the war, and I offered peace a while back, but I can't really blame Sweden for rejecting it; like I said, neither one of us could win this game with the land we have.

Sorry for the lack of RP stuff, I just couldn't really keep the motivation for it, heh.

Yeah, by the looks of it we both got dealt a bad hand. To be honest, all I wanted originally was to get to the Torne and set that as my border. But once you put Gao and Kangaba there, I felt I had to protect my remaining land/make up for lost time.

We both pretty much took each other out of the running with our war.

Yeah, I should have focused more on trying to find other landmasses to settle. Getting all the AIs to war me was interesting, I usually can't seem to make them like me enough to joint war. They didn't really send many troops, but it hurt my trade a lot. And as Mali, of course, with that 30% production penalty, not having good trade routes means you're pretty bad off.

I thought for sure you were going to completely overwhelm me with purchased units, which is why I started bribing them. Turned out that all the AI were more than happy to war against you. The most I ever had to pay any of them was 1 gold.

Unfortunately, I had to completely abandon my early game plan just to keep producing enough units to keep you out of my lands. A Sweden with only 10 tourism per turn and two city states at the end of the Renaissance Era is not going to do well at all.

[OOC, I'm almost certain to take cities. While you might be able to fight off my frigate fleets and may even have frigates and the ability to form fleets of you own, a look at your tech ladder tells me that you are..... at least a dozen turns from battleships. As an absolute minimum.

My battleship fleets are 5 turns away.]

Yeah, I only just finished field cannons. Looking at the science spread, you seem to be like 5+ techs ahead of me (and the victory screen says I'm second place in science, although I'm not certain if that's true).

Keeping up with Korea in tech without an absolutely massive city advantage is almost impossible, in my experience. You either beat them up early, or they get half an era ahead of you.

[But. What actually slows my conquest is this. Mali's got enough pressure to keep flipping most of the cities back to him.

On the other hand, that's several turns they aren't contributing to his empire. And it only last until I lose my patience and just start razing everything in sight.]

So I could show you more, but I think this is enough. Even though my war with AI France felt like it took forever, I completed my war, allowing my science to go up to about double my nearest competitor. In addition, unlike other games where I had a tech lead and lost, my empire had no glaring weaknesses (Except for gold for a handful of turns) I didn't make as much as Mali but I made enough gold. I never felt a hammer crunch. I was leader in player on culture, and even Alexander only had like 20% more culture.

I think the only possible thing that could have lost me the game, would have been when Sweden and I met. Sweden immediately offering a white peace to Eurus, and them tag teaming me in some way. However, Sweden was disencouraged from perusing such an action due to being such a far behind third place. Tag teaming me, would probably just end up with Mali eventually winning. (Or me winning still)

Any questions?
