So was looking at mundane equipment and found the Honey Leather Tent from RotW. I immediately noticed that, unlike the tarp, the tent bonus is untyped and non-conditional. So you get +4 Survival for gathering food... while in the tent. Were you to keep to RAW and not just make it like the tarp, what would you fluff this as? Mushrooms magically grow, small animals just walk in to die, honey drips from the ceiling? Comical answers are most welcome.

It’s made with troll skin leather. You cut pieces off, make soup out of them, and the tent regenerates.

The outside has a camo pattern - if you walk around holding it over your head like Solid Snake with a box, animals won't notice you hunting them.

You can make a little fence and dig some post holes along it and collect snakes that gravel the perimeter and fall in the hole.

I think the intent here is clear that it expands on the previous paragraph:

A character equipped with a honey leather tarpaulin big enough to drape over his body gains a +1 circumstance bonus on Survival checks made to resist the effect of severe weather. If the character is stationary, the bonus increases to +2.

Races of the Wild, page 169

That is, being in a Honey Leather tent gives you a +4 circumstance bonus on Survival checks to resist the effects of severe weather.

__

Even if you were to interpret being in the tent as giving an untyped +4 bonus to all survival checks, the Rules Compendium makes it clear that hunting/foraging for food and water is part of travel, not just staying still.

A creature can move at half speed during overland travel, hunting and foraging, providing food and water for itself by succeeding on a DC 10 Survival check. This DC increases by 5 for inhospitable lands, such as a desert, and by 10 for barren lands, including the open ocean for nonaquatic creatures. Survival can even be used in this way in an urban environment. A survivalist can provide food for one other creature for every 2 points by which the Survival check result exceeds the DC.

Rules Compendium, page 99

For getting along in the wild or for gaining the Fortitude save bonus noted in the table above, you make a Survival check once every 24 hours. The result of that check applies until the next check is made.

Player's Handbook, page 83

So, in order to gain its benefit, you would have to carry the tent while staying inside it:

The outside has a camo pattern - if you walk around holding it over your head like Solid Snake with a box, animals won't notice you hunting them.

Technically the camo pattern idea is contrary to RAW...

It gets its name from its golden color and its texture, which resembles soft, cured leather.

Races of the Wild, page 169

...but otherwise the premise of sneaking along inside the tent makes the most sense.

So put the tent as the cover for a covered wagon and shoot deer on the way?

You clamber into your rickshaw with its brilliant, scarlet painted frame inlaid with gold and golden honey leather canvas cover. You take the reigns of your ebony, magebred mule and you’re off on the hunt. The other hunters laughed at you, saying no beast would near your garish cart, yet you were the only one to bring back a feast of an elk and two young boar on the first day.

Maybe it's made from the skins of honey badgers?

Road poaching is illegal. I could see this as a hook.

I'd either make my ground cloth a carpet of flying, or place the tent over the howdah of a winged elephant.
