Hello here is something I did because I kinda don't like moondruids at level 2 and even after. This start out less broken with dealing a little less damage and having way less tankiness at the expanse of staying in a caster form. It ends up giving more support and the damage is scaling a little until at level 14 you might want to burn a level 6 spell slot(expansive I know) to turn into quite a monster.

Circle of the beast:

D&D5 ed druid subclass – Circle of the beast

The druids that come from the circle of the beast have so strong ties to beasts that they literally made contact with one of the oldest primal beast of lore. The primal beast is of divine power and can manifest an avatar through a strong bond between the druid and itself. Druids from the circle of the beast may looks savage like beasts to other folks and they probably really are to a certain degree for people that do not understand the way of the beast or for people that made the mistake of disturbing the neutrality of life on their territory.

Crafter by nature
When you choose this archetype, at 2nd level, you gain proficiency with the leatherworker’s tool. You know how to craft a scale mail out of a giant crocodile hides and scales.

Beast Avatar
Finally, at 2nd level, you developed such a strong bond with a primal beast that you can choose one beast avatar from the wolf, the toad or the bear. You have been infused by the primal beast with its avatar form and as a Bonus action, by expanding a wild shape, you can manifest a large transparent beast avatar on your position. The avatar is large in size and you choose in which corner you are standing. It is emanating from your body and follow you wherever you go. Your beast avatar manifest with a pool of energy equal to 3 times your druid level. Whenever you take damage, you can reduce the damage you are taking for half your druid level + your wisdom modifier if you choose to and the energy pool is reduced by the amount of damage that was reduced. You cannot decide the amount of damage that you are reducing, it is either equal to the maximum possible reduction or the damage taken and the reduction cannot exceed the remaining energy left in the pool. Your manifestation last for 1 minute or until its protective energy is depleted. Also, when your beast spirit form is active, you can communicate with beasts, they understand you and you understand them.

Your abilities made with the beast avatar attack bonus is equal to your proficiency bonus + your wisdom modifier.
Your beast avatar saving throw DC is equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your wisdom modifier.

Wolf Avatar
Using your action, your wolf avatar can make a bite action, it is a melee spell attack and deal piercing damage equal to 2d4 + your wisdom modifier. On a hit, if the target is a creature, it must succeed a strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Toad Avatar
Using your action, your toad avatar can make a bite action, it is a melee spell attack and deal piercing damage equal to 1d8 + your wisdom modifier. On a hit, the target is grappled (Escape DC is Strength based against your beast avatar DC). Until this grapple end, the target is restrained, and the toad avatar can't bite another Target.
Bear spirit
Using your action, your bear avatar can make a claw attack, it is a melee spell attack and deal slashing damage equal to 2d4 + your wisdom modifier.
Using your bonus action, your bear avatar can make a bite attack, it is a melee spell attack and deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your wisdom modifier.

Guardian beast
Beginning at 6th level, your bond with your primal beast gets even stronger and you become a better conduct for the avatar of your primal beast. Whenever you use a wild shape to manifest your chosen beast avatar, it is now huge instead of large and your position is right in the middle of it. You can now reduce the damage taken for any creature of your choice that is standing in your beast spirit space and your beast spirit is difficult terrain for enemies. Also, use the next die size for any attacks made with your chosen avatar. Any d4 becomes a d6, any d6 becomes a d8 and any d8 becomes a d10.

Enchanting aura
When you reach the 10th level, your beast avatar aura reach to other creatures and cause some enchanting effects on you and any friendly creature that stand on its position. If the friendly creature leaves your avatar space, it loses the enchanting aura effect.

Wolf avatar
The spirit of the wolf is manifesting into any creature of your choice in its space and you all gain a keen hearing and smell. You also all gain advantage on melee rolls as long as there is another friend standing at 5 feet.
Toad avatar
The spirit of the toad is manifesting into any creature of your choice in its space and you all gain the amphibious trait, a standing leap ability where you can long jump up to 20 feet and up to 10 feet high with or without a running start plus a swim speed equal to your movement speed. You also all deal an extra d6 of poison damage with piercing and slashing melee attacks.
Bear avatar
The spirit of the bear is manifesting into any creature of your choice in its space and you all gain a keen smell, a 30 feet climb speed and an advantage on constitution saving throws.

Avatar primal form
Starting at the 14th level, you have become the supreme conduct for your primal beast avatar and when you use a wild a shape to manifest your chosen beast avatar, you can burn a 6th level spell slot to bring your ultimate manifestation. If you do, your beast avatar is now gargantuan in size and you hover somewhere of your choice in its space for no more than 10 feet of height. Your beast avatar gets 1 extra energy per druid level, it also gets 1 extra melee spell attack when you use your action to attack with it and you add one extra hit die of damage for each attacks. When your avatar form disappear, you slowly fall back on the ground.
