We quest for the babe.
What babe?
The babe with the power.
What power?
The power of voodoo.
Who do?
We do.
Do what?
We quest for the babe!

Mandatory Bowie reverence paid- how would we go about making his character from the Labyrinth?

I expect most people will immediately go for Bard but I'm curious what else comes to mind- especially if anyone who read the manga chimes in.

Anyone who says 'Bard' is wrong. Because all's they're remembering is a single song. And no other class ever puts ranks into Performance ever.

He is clearly a Warlock (Archfey), and also likely has Sorcerer levels, majoring in Divination and Conjuration.

Magic Stone. Gives you 3 magical spheres to attack with. Must-have for this character.

I mean he's got several songs but I agree that I don't think the song themselves are ever the actual 'magic' if you will. He's singing alongside the magic- the songs aren't causing them.

That said a list of some of the things he definitely does in a quick sense- though it's not the total list:

Turns into a barn owl sometimes- though not often
Probably the most blatant use of the Maze spell you could ask for I mean really (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ9BHGX58vQ).
Alternatively/in addition he's walking on walls/ceilings/under stairs
Attempted to take away the memories of someone- you could argue this instead as attacking dreams
Either an illusion or a hypnotic trance for the ballroom scene
Disguises himself as a beggar
Capable of commanding/demanding allegiance
Compelling people to dance
Magic jumping of course

He's a warlock patron.

Probably not a PC.

EDIT
Relevant quote:
Sarah: Give me the child.

Jareth: Sarah, beware. I have been generous up 'til now. I can be cruel.

Sarah: Generous? What have you done that's generous?

Jareth: *Everything*! Everything that you wanted I have done. You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me, I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all for *you*! I am exhausted from living up to your expectations. Isn't that generous?

Sounds like a patron to me.

Goblin Warlock with Mask of Many Faces and a pair of very tall platform shoes (and a permissive DM :)).

Illusionist Wizard.

Makes extensive use of disguise self or even seeming, can alter it more or less at will and make things that are part of his costumes solid. The Labyrinth itself might be a mirage arcane. Not restricted to illusions, as a wizard he can cast spells to polymorph, curse, and transport or teleport himself and others, too.

While I do not disagree I feel I should note (since I didn't do so) that I intended for the thread to be about making him as a PC.

The Patron angle makes sense though and that's no lie.

He's a clear Glamour Bard to me. "Assuming a form of unearthly beauty" is very accurate and performances that charm and inspire others is also good. Give him Boots of Spider Climb and he can pick up the few other high level spells he needs through Magical Secrets.

I think you’re gonna need to look a little deeper if you’re trying to create a PC Jareth.
Perhaps think about it, what was Jareth before he became the Goblin King? What happened in his “younger” life that led him to become such a master maze manipulator and ruler of goblins?

My two cents
Half-elf sorcerer

IIRC in the manga he was stolen basically exactly like Toby was. It's just his mother (who entered the Labyrinth after him) presumably didn't get him back out. I never finished it though as I was at a convention at the time and had to leave the room to go to another event.

I think he's a fae demi or even lesser god.

That doesn’t seem to be much of a PC character. Seems like it’s a person cursed to live within the labyrinth and become the ruler of the goblins.
Perhaps a lesser version of himself, an avatar that goes out and tries to trick adventurers into partaking in the labyrinth in an attempt to free himself of the curse. Although that wouldn’t be much of a curse if you can still roaming round the world even in a lesser version of himself.

100% agree. He's not a warlock, he's the patron.

With a +3 codpiece. :smalltongue:

Well the idea is to replicate the power-set.

The indication I believe is that he wants Sarah to stay with him because he's lonely and the Goblins suck. He also harbors a hope that Tobey will become the next Goblin King and so set him free.
There's fairly ripe opportunities for him to be out in the world- looking for love, looking for a successor, or just generally looking for mistreated children to help/steal.

I’m curious about his spell list, myself.

He would be easy to make as a DM BBG, hard as a player. I think wizard would be the closest but I wouldn't go specialist. For sure though an emphasis for charm and illusion spells. Obviously ranks in performance. High Int and charisma.
