This is right

pathfinder 1st edition

This is wrong

Well i do not like pathfinder, but i can give some basic suggestions.

- Go for melee, not for ranged. Ranged is weak and is harder to make sneak attacks.
- Go for single weapon melee, with a buckler if you can afford one with no penalties. Avoid dual weapons
- Study every single skill and know exactly what you can do with it, and how many skill points you need to put in. You can choose some feats that increase skills if you fell that your rogue playstyle is better suited using skills to lead and support your party then fighting.

WHAT? The single most effective way to pump sneak attack damage is to go finesse and dual wield. Especially with large crit range daggers. Fish for those critical hits.

The real question is unchanged rogue or base rogue. If base rogue, just don't. It is flaming hot garbage. If unchained we can work with that. And yes go melee.

Further, what does your friend wish to do with said rogue? What is the size/race?

Well i do not like pathfinder,

This might explain the issues with most of your suggestions :smalltongue:

@OP, follow these instead:

1) Ranged rogues are quite viable - you simply need a way to remain unseen while attacking, and (ideally) a way to increase your sneak attack range. Greater Invisibility is the easiest route for the former, and Sniper Goggles for the latter, but there are other tricks like Fogcutting Lenses or racials like Smokesight depending on what you want to play. Most importantly however, Rogues can key melee and ranged attacks off the same stat, so the opportunity cost for being good at both is minimal, in exchange for a massive increase in your tactical options - there are many monsters in the game that make being in melee hazardous or impractical, even early on.

2) You should absolutely dual-wield - unlike classes such as swashbuckler and magus, the rogue gets no benefit from an einhander style, and a buckler can be used while dual-wielding just fine if you truly want one. If you do your job right you'll typically be attacking flat-footed AC, which makes the TWF penalties to your extra attacks negligible, and you can continue to hit in later rounds thanks to the Debilitating Injuries you leave behind.

3) You have no need as a rogue to spend your feats on more skills, you get plenty of support there already. Focus instead on feats that make you better at your primary roles, like staying hidden (Dampen Presence), martial debuffs (the Dirty Trick chain), winning Initiative, and extra Rogue Talents and/or Ninja Tricks so you get the best ones as early as possible.
