Starting town: GREENVILLE
North of Brance and inland, just west and below sky fell mountains, near the end of the river underneath the unnamed forest.

Greenville is a small settlement, so unimportant its not even on most maps. It gets very few travellers but has its fair share of problems.
Population: 60 to 80 (90% human)
Governor: Boroneur Caresh

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7b/f7/e7/7bf7e7b6150206266234bc160b21e8d4.jpg
A portly old man who likes to show off his jewellery and wealth. Has two sons and a few mistresses that he thinks no one knows about. Not the greatest governor but neither does he seem to be the worst.
A figure head for his advisors that do the work.

BRANCE

85% human pop
A Big bustling city. Not as grand or busy as the Capitol Mallaston, or as large as the remnants of Sandspire, but for most of those in it, it is the largest city they will ever see.
It is surrounded by big stone walls that reach high, protecting its citizens from the creatures of the night.
It holds a strong religious presence. Numerous guilds and great vast sections of poverty.
Dilapidated houses line streets that stink of sewerage and waste, beggars and orphans fill the alley ways between.
It is only the small gated and guarded communities that are free from such poorly sights.

RHAEGORA and the Elves

The elves near conquered the entire main-land near a millennia ago. Few remember or know that except for the elves. They pushed every evil creature to the far borders and the land flourished for some time.
Then they suddenly abandoned it, retreating to a small island where they built what is now known as Rhaegora.
They left little influence upon the land they once sowed and have become a mystery unto themselves.
They interact very little with the rest of the country, keeping to themselves mostly except for the warriors they send to Espladar to continue the fight against the creatures of the Underdark.

MALLASTON
The capitol. Dwarven influence. Massive.

SANDSPIRE
Ruins of a great city. Magical remains.

ESPLADAR
The most unified city. Law and chaos.
Multiple races, common enemy.
Defensive point agains the under dark.

Intro

The time was suddenly upon you, it came with little notice, but it was here. You would finally be leaving Brance and travelling off to not only join, but help build and create the new adventurers guild. Beyond the great tall gates where you currently stood, a new life of adventures and opportunity awaited. Somewhere out there was your destiny just waiting to be seized.

——————————
Setting

The still nights warm air was filled with hope and excitement. Being the season of the sun, the days had grown hotter and more importantly for would-be travellers, longer.
A near full moon hung on the edge of an otherwise empty sky, cascading a soft pale light over the sleeping city of Brance. If anyone was awake, they were indoors, or skulking around silently in the shadows. Curfew would not rise for a couple more hours still, only lifting with the sun.

It was somewhat peaceful at this hour, being outdoors at this time was a thing many did not often experience. A dog howled in the distance. Some rats scurried along a decrepit alleyway. A nimble creature leapt across rooftops on padded feet. All whilst the soft crackling of many torches and lamps created a familiar comforting white noise.

While uncommon it was not unheard of that the shadowy creatures of the night would breach the great walls. If and when they did, they were easily deterred away from buildings and locations with light sources, instead seeking less fortunate and often poorer prey.

The rich used magic or hired ever burning torches, their building always brightly illuminated at night. Those moderately ok had lamps at every entrance and window. The poor were lucky if they had a torch, often huddling together around impromptu fires.

Brave Light guards marched the streets in groups, enforcing the curfew and illuminating every dark corner of the city, supposedly. (any who lived on the streets would know they often avoided the dark areas.)

————————
Event
One hour ago

In the wide empty clearing just inside the main gate, illuminated by the many crackling torches posted evenly along the long stretching stone wall, shadows danced over the men and women slowly gathering in near silence. As they arrived with backpacks on and possessions tucked under their arms, they loaded their things with a practiced and coordinated efficiency into the two large waiting carriages.

Atop the wall Light-guards patrolled back and forth, lanterns in hand. A little way into the city another patrol checked the papers of the arriving party members.

This is your destination but did you make it there...

Roll for random encounter or simply choose from encounter spoiler (2-3) or (4-5). Once you pick one path you cannot take the other.
Please join up with any other character on the same encounter as you.
For random encounter roll 1d6 +/-
-2 Squalid or worse Lifestyle
+0 Poor lifestyle
+2 modest or greater lifestyle

You traveled through the poorest parts of the town, you are forced to sift through dark shadows and pass by homeless people who could just as likely be dead as sleeping.
These alleyways are never visited by light guards. They are filled with the dregs, filth and rubbish of the city. The only people here are the desperate and the opportunists.

Turning down a particularly dangerous and tight alley roll a perception or insight dc14 to notice the ambush and intent of 1d4 thugs. They either hide amongst the rubbish, appear as a sleeping cripple, or perch delicately on a nearby frail roof.

Once this encounter is over, roll again but a 1d4 (no minus)

You don’t go far without the light of a houses torch being nearby. Maybe you had to cross a bit of farmland or an old abandoned vacant block.
A place Light guards don’t usually come unless feeling cruel. You pass a beggar or two. Before reaching the more secure districts you hear the deep sniffing of a dog, proceeded by a hungry growl. About 60ft away an angry mastiff has you in its sights.
If you run roll a d10-2 and end up in another encounter with it still chasing you.
You were happily on your way to the location, enjoying the light cast by the flickering flames stationed at each passing house when you hear a commotion from behind one of the buildings.
3 light guards (who have dulled their lights) set upon someone on the floor while one stands watch near the corner with two torches in hand.
You travel uninterrupted, guided by the lights of the passing houses. You are on the path to your destination when you hear the commotion caused by one of the other NPC’s. Go and investigate. (If you want.)
What fortune!? You stumble upon a small pouch in the middle of the road. Hmm, what to do now?
A charming tall man of importance and two accompanying light guards hail you to check your papers and offer to escort you to your destination. They are kind and cooperative with any questions.
Roll 2d3 (no plus or minus) for another encounter with the aid of your new friends.

Lanius cursed inwardly for the hundred time. The voyage on the ship had been bad enough without a squad of Raven assassin's deciding the best time to attack him was during a storm. Hadn't it been for his finely honed senses and his inability to sleep with the creeking and groaning of the ship, he would have been dead. Instead he had stood a fighting chance. A slim one. A very slim one. And so he had dodged, danced and jumped to get away from the the three shadowy clad figures. And it would have worked - if he hadn't run out of ship eventually. Up on the prow he stood, forcing them to come at him one by one.
But of course, the Ravens fought dirty. Throwing a lit lantern to set him alight had backfired. Literally. A sudden gust of wind had thrown it off course and instead set the rigging on fire.
For some reason, ships where build of cloth, tar and wood, making it nearly impossible for the burning oil in the strong wind not to flare up like a fireball.
But even that might have been salvageable, hadn't the thrice damned Ravens also taken out the watch on duty. And all Lanius could do was feverishly defend himself as the fire spread.
The explosion came as a surprise to all of them.
Lanius found himself in the water, clinging desperately to the gallons figure of the late "Siren's Wail", like a particularly horny bard to his latest conquest.
He had no memories of what came after. When he woke up on dry land, his only clue to not being dead was that he hurt all over. His clothes were torn and wet sand threatened to scour away his white skin any time he moved.
Relying on his basic training he tried to determine where he was. Being on the east coast of the main continent was as far as he got. At random he decided to head south - and indeed, for once had been lucky. On the second day, dirty and hungry, Brance loomed on the horizon. If he could find the new guild, he might even be on time - provided he moved through the night, climbed the walls and in general followed the most desperate and dangerous course anyone could imagine.

[roll2] encounter

While moving through the shadows, Lanius felt somehow better again. Like back when he was with his unit and they had moved swiftly and silently through the battlefield. And so he had no trouble to spot the clumsy set up ambush of the three hoodlums. Desperate creatures - not unlike himself.
He still had two of his daggers and was ready for a fight...

In retrospect, Lanius had to admit he could have avoided the fight. It would have meant taking a detour and maybe missing the caravan, but still: He didn't have to kill them. But he wanted to fight.
And so, the ambushers were quite surprised when suddenly there was an equally shadowy figure among them, ramming a dagger into the windpipe of the first man. Their reactions were slow, oh so slow and Lanius was able to slash the second man's artery, just inside his armpit, before dragging his second dagger across the man's eyes. The bandit stumbled backward, not knowing that he was already dead as his life quickly pulsed out of him in a fine spray. Steel rang out as the remaining bandit managed to draw his saber and lunge in an ugly cut. Lanius recognized the movement subconsciously as the same he had learned in his first few days of basic. But it seemed as if this gentleman hadn't gotten to any of the other lessons. Because as Lanius deflected and counter attacked, the man knew only to quickly step back, avoiding the main thrust but failed to see the second dagger coming which left a firey trail down the man's left arm as he instinctively tried to keep the weapon away from his face. The counter attack showed that the man really only knew the one move and again Lanius deflected it, before cutting the man across the right wrist.
That was enough. The bandit threw his weapon at Lanius and ran. For a moment, Lanius was tempted to pursue the man. But the gear lying around was much more interesting. He dismissed the ratty old sabre, but the military rapier and shortbow looked appealing enough. Even the leather armor of the second one fit him well enough. And yes, even a few rations were in the old backpack. Taking a moment to wolf down an apple and some jerky, Lanius felt better than he had in a long while. As the adrenaline ebbed away, he felt tired again and was aware in how much danger he still was. Stowing his new possessions, he silently went on his way again.
A corner later, he saw a light patrol - they had set down their lanterns and were apparently working someone over. A glance told him that it was the escaped bandit.
"Out of the fire into the frying pan." He whispered to himself. With the patrol occupied otherwise, Lanius had no trouble crossing the street to reach his appointment in time...

Daisy walks quickly-well, for her, at least. Her head is held high, and she looks around at the new town-it's different from her home. She makes a mental note to find a good patch of dirt to start a garden in, but focuses on her current goal more than anything else.

In her concentration, she doesn't really notice much besides where she's going-it's a big new opportunity, after all, and it deserves her focus.

As she walks, she bumps into a group of Light Guards. Oh! Sorry! she says as she picks herself up, grabbing her walking stick. I was just in thought... she says by way of excuse.

He mutters his prayers to himself, just as he has been taught. Father Iandoth had worried for him, bless his heart, but Elphas knew both the streets and his faith. He would not be harmed this night.

A commotion interrupts his thoughts as he flits from lantern to lantern. He turns a corner to investigate, and sees... a young girl? Why is she green? Aelia was no stranger to early mornings. Or late nights. Or late mornings for that matter. It was easy to lose oneself in one's work or in a book. It was just as easy to be awoken by one's rambunctious siblings whether you were well rested or not, she thought to herself with a smile. She'd miss her family dearly, but she also couldn't miss this opportunity to see the world.

Armed, armored, and equipped with as much preparation as she could manage she'd set out after saying her farewells to her family and taking a few fresh baked baguette her mother thrust upon her as she was heading out the door.

She was already enjoying one, nothing quite compares to fresh out of the oven bread, when she came across two light guards and another fellow. After showing them her paperwork, she offered them a baguette. She explained she was on her way to join the Adventurer's Guild caravan and then asked, "I wonder, what brings you out at such an early hour sir?"

LightGuards
The light guards of Brance wear a distinguishable uniform. The first thing noticeable beyond the bright light they always carry is their shiny polished steel kettle helmet. Spines run along its brim to appear like sun rays and a special polish adds to the effect by causing a yellow hue to reflect in the right light.
A little lower down they wear a decorated gilt-brass gorget that sits functionally around their throat and in it holds their guild badge. On a silver disk sits the engraved white marble stone emblem of a four pointed star with a small gem in the middle. Lastly a clean white surcoat hangs loosely over their personal attire and light armour.

Knowledge check
The light guards are one of the biggest guilds with members in nearly every city and town.
Their mission is to defend the people from the shadow creatures.
They sleep during the day so they can stay vigilant all night.

Light guards come from various churches and religions.
Becoming a light guard requires personal sacrifices.
They are a holy Guild blessed by both the king and the church to use magic.
Apparently all members can use a little magic.
They are technically not guards and have no jurisdiction during the day.
The main guild is in the capital.
There are many different ranks within the guild.

Light guards have a secret elixir that hones their senses at night and keeps them awake and sharp.
The guild makes a pretty coin for their services.
All of the guilds have to report often and are closely monitored by their own order.
They have a strict hierarchy.

The Light guards were founded by elves shortly after most left the mainland.

“Praise be.” the light guard replies in a gruff voice with a nod of his head as he subtly grabs the plant girls shoulder.
“Everything is under control here, carry on.” he ordered, holding up his bright lantern before his face, hiding his features behind the bright blinding light.
The man on the floor moaned but said nothing. One guard remained watching him while the other came up behind his friend. One hand holding a lantern eye height, the other clasping the club on his belt.

The tall man gave the young woman a charming smile. He was human and appeared to be in his late forties, he had a slight rugged appearance that he wore well. He spoke eloquently and his clothes were neat and tidy.
”Why, I am here to escort you of course. M’lady.”
He gratefully took the bread and began leading the way.

The light guards with him were simple standard Brance light guards and said little as they walked beside them illuminating the way with their lanterns and occasionally pausing to fearlessly peer into the shadows.

”You could have a nice life here, why throw that all away? Adventuring is a dangerous business.” he speaks as he walks, seemingly enjoy the walk as much as he enjoyed the still warm fresh baguette.

Daisy continues on her way, a bit shook at her experience with the guards. She mutters Not very friendly, for what they're supposed to be doing... to herself.

She arrives where the caravans are being loaded, her staff click-clacking on the pavement. She looks around at the various folk doing their jobs, and tries to find one who has authority, or at least isn't too busy to talk. When she does, she introduces herself. Hello! I am Daisy MacDougall-I'm here for the Adventurers' Guild, she says. I've got a note from Clarissa, my mother, she adds, fishing the note out of her pack.

In Common...
To those of the newfound Adventurers' Guild...

This is my daughter, Daisy. She has experience in the magical arts, of the Druidic tradition. She is still inexperienced in the field of battle, but she will learn quickly, and she has a strong drive to help others. She will do well.

-Clarissa MacDougall

In Gnomish, On The Back
I love you, Daisy. Stay safe-and do me proud.

The man looks at the note. He reaches out for it, but Daisy holds onto it, just letting him read it from her hand. He sighs, bending down to get a clearer look. "Right," he says, "find a spot with your stuff. We're still loading the caravans, but this will be leaving for the guildhall soon."

Daisy nods and casts her gaze to the caravan. She finds a good spot to set herself down on, but doesn't take a seat yet. She heads to a patch of upturned cobble, where something fell or the pavement was disturbed in another way, and she plants her shoeless feet on them. Roots dig down, just a bit, and she waits there for the rest of the arrivals.

Elphas relaxes slightly as he sees the young girl leave, and moves to do the same. Thankfully, she had been dealing with the less corrupt members of the Light Guard, ones who hadn't let their fancy elixir overtake their senses. He knew from experience that the watch could be... less than helpful at times. Especially at night. He idly wonders what the other man had done to deserve the beating they had given him, then shakes his head. Tonight, he has places to be. A simple prayer for the man's soul will have to suffice.
=================
Upon reaching the loading site, he introduces himself on behalf of the Temple of Xelenos. After receiving his instructions, he sets his things down, idly examining the other members of the caravan. His eyes widen in surprise as he sees the small green girl who had scurried off ahead of him standing among the cobblestones. He makes his way over to her and strikes up a conversation. "Hello there. Are you... here for the Adventurer's Guild caravan as well?" he asks, a slight note of incredulity in his voice.

Lanius had recovered somewhat. The caravan master had looked at him pretty askew when Lanius had told him, he had lost his papers during a shipwreck. But his name had been on his list - and the little bit of magic, his mother had taught him, had made sure, that he was clean and presentable. He was still munching on a bit of jerky when a few other travellers arrived.
Lanius had to look twice when he saw the little plant creature. His curiousity piqued and nothing better to do, he sauntered over to her.
"Greetings. Are you here to say farewell to someone, or are you going with us on this journey?"
He asked, trying to sound friendly, but as usual failed, talking more like an inquisitor.
Trying to lessen the unfortunate impression he said: "My name is Lanius Collurio. Formerly of the 23rd Falcon Pack and now on my way to become an intrepid adventurer."
Even before she could answer, another traveller appeared with much the same question. Lanius nodded to him and tried for a smile that didn't look like he was barring his teeth.

Hm? Oh, yes! Daisy replies to both the newcomers. She turns to face them without lifting her feet, and continues, saying I left home to experience more of the world. I grew up in the capitol, and I've actually been part of the Tinkers' Guild for most of my life. I sold a lot of my little knick-knacks... Well, the ones mom didn't want to keep, you know-in order to help pay for passage here, and gear. But I think this is a great chance! We can all help make the world a better place. She finishes her words with a smile on her face, bright and naive. You know, actually, I didn't introduce myself!

She bends down, dropping two seeds, and whispers to the tufts of grass at her feet. In mere moments, first one, then a second white flower, with a bright yellow center, sprout. She plucks them, and hands one to each of the men around her. I'm Daisy. Daisy MacDougall! she says, finally, by way of introduction.

So, Mr. Collurio, she asks, what is the "Falcon Pack"? And why are there twenty-three of them?

Casting Druidcraft twice, to get the flowers all a-blooming.

What at first appeared to be a short stout man in fine armour, soon revealed himself to be a beardless dwarf. He, like the few regular town guards that he commanded over, seemed displeased about being awake so early. Daisy might recognise him from her arrival just the other day. They, like the light guards, were here to ensure a safe departure for everyone and make sure everything was above-board.

He gave Daisy a quick nod of acknowledgement as he approached the trio, even if she didn’t remember him, he sure noticed an Agave enter his city. “Keep it down.” he hushly scowled at them in a stern whisper. “You don’t want to attract any unwanted attention now!”
Then he added, “The falcon pacts are units of brave and daring elves who leave the safety of their homelands to fight on the front lines at deadfall mountains. Keeping the creatures of the underdark at bay. The most honourable thing any of them have done since fleeing the shadowlands. (Elven name for mainland) There’s twenty five because they’ve been fighting the good fight for a long time. ” answering Daisy’s question on behalf of Lanius in a whisper before adding his own. “So elf, why do you flee your duty? You can’t get much further away from it than where you are going? What did you do?” he asks eying Lanius suspiciously.

"I served my tour of duty - until two months ago, actually. Ironically, it was my visit in Raegorath for R&R that brought my career as a Falcon scout to an end. There were some that lacked the proper respect for the men and women serving in that fight. I duelled them. Unfortunately, one of them was particularly well connected. The repercussions made it necessary for me to look for an alternative career. My hope is, that joining a new guild will gain me enough prestige and influence to once again be able rejoin my brothers and sisters in the field. Also, it hopefully helps to be that far away to avoid the assassins.
Now you know. And be advised: I tell you this not because I have to defend myself, but because you serve your nation and deserve my respect. I expect the same from you."
Lanius whisper had been harsh at the end, but now his voice returned to a calmer murmur as he turned towards the armored human:
"May I presume that you are warrior of an order? You joining a guild surprises me - are you looking for riches or for glory?"

Elphas's eyes widen slightly in surprise, first at the conjured daisy and then at Lanius's words.. "Oh, I'm no warrior. The armor and weapons may look impressive, but I have sworn to use them only in self-defense. By the grace of Xelenos, I am a shield for others and a healer of their pain. And I seek neither riches or glory, but to spread her divine guidance to those who need it." A small smile plays across his face as he adds "Though I certainly won't say no to a good payoff." The smile fades as he realizes something."Oh goodness me, I haven't introduced myself either! I am Elphas, Chosen of Xelenos. It's good to meet the both of you." He turns back toward Daisy. "Say, how did you make this flower grow? Is it magic inherent to your being, or did someone teach it to you?"

Little of A, little of B, she replies. I've had a knack for making things grow my whole life, but it wasn't until I started training with actual Druids that I really focused on it and got proficient. I've got some other tricks as well-I can chill people, with that being my main method of self-defense, and I can empower others with magic, if only a bit.

Druidcraft is a racial spell. Frostbite and Guidance are learned spells. But I'm just kinda rolling them all into a whole package.

She continues, saying I've got a handful of more potent spells, but those take a lot of me. She turns then to face Lanius, and says I'm sorry you faced such an end to your duty-I'm sure you're a good man, and you deserved better than that. But who knows-maybe with the Guild, you can show them how wrong they were.

As they all talk, Daisy closes her eyes for a moment, and the dirt beneath her moves a bit. She lifts her leg, shaking the dirt off her feet, and steps back onto the cobbled pavement.

Lanius replied to Elphas: "Self defense... Yes. But you know what the best defense is? A very, very strong and decisive offense. I appreciate your conviction. Defenders are needed too. But no fight is won through defense alone. I'm looking forward to going into the field with you."
He listened to the exchange and answered Daisy:
"Sometimes I think all the good men died already and only the bastards have been left alive. For what it is worth: I'll do my best with the talents that I've been given for my comrades in arms.
Speaking of which." With a quick word and gesture, a small shower of sparks appeared in his open palm.
"I'm not a scholar, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. My mates always commended my ability to flavor our rations."

The beardless dwarf followed the conversation intently for a moment then sighed in resignation before chuckling in a way only dwarves could.
“Aye, well I’m just here to make sure you all leave safely and nothing gets in behind ya’s. Captains gotta be ‘ere to open the gates after all, specially if it’s before the suns up. It’s gonna be a few hours till light still, I hope you all know what your doing.”
He shakes his head as he walks away, seemingly amused with the idea of leaving to join a guild. In no time he’s back to directing the town guards about in near silence.

A new face quickly replaced the dwarf captain’s, a thin frail young woman with disheveled dark hair and a freckled round face. She was dressed in simple attire, layered loose clothing. She had dark eyes that scanned everyone as she talked.
“I’m Eisha.” she said quickly.
“I’m joining for the riches and glory, and the gold, n money.” she added, not realising her single minded repetition.
“Reckon we’ll become rich?” she asked.
Her excitement turns to bemusement as she curiously pokes daisy.

Aelia raises an eyebrow at the Light Guard's question. Clearly he wasn't one of the many people in the city who already knew about her by reputation (or more accurately phrased, rumor). She points at her eyes and replies, "Well, my prospects aren't quite what they might be here. And I really want to see what's out there with my own eyes." she gives the guard a wink at the wordplay.

Aelia had arrived a little earlier, hearing people talk, but the light guards had escorted her to the other side of the caravan from them and offered to help her stow her things, so she wasn't able to join in as early as she liked.
By the time she walked over, after saying farewell to her nice escort, all she'd managed to catch was "My mates always commended my ability to flavor our rations."

"Do you cook as well then sir?" she asks Lanius in a friendly tone as she steps up to join the conversation, only for another young woman did as well. "Your goal is money? Not exactly the most noble or exciting of goals, but at least you're honest about it. I can't say I'd mind making some myself-" at which point she notices Daisy (because Eisha is poking her) and says with some excitement, "Oh an Agave! I've never seen one of your kind before. I didn't know we had any in the city?" she trails off a bit confused how she could have missed such an interesting being to study so close to home. (Completely disregarding the fact that it's not like she had any habit of touring the entire city or personally engaging with the rumor mill for fear of winding up with more rumors about herself flowing around.)

As the tilts her head in her perplexity she finally spots Elphas and gives him a little wave in greeting, even though they're standing only a few feet from each other.

Noticing Eisha's quick fingers, she whispers to her, "I would advise returning that to the dwarf and apologizing. Stealing from your guildmates isn't a very good way to make money if you want to wind up keeping it."

Eisha rolled her eyes at everyone’s speeches on greed and wealth, then snapped at Aelia with a sharp whisper. “Return what?” she says acting surprised, planting a little bit of anger and confusion into her voice. It was a good act but she saw the conviction in Aelia’s eyes and new it to be a pointless battle.

“He ain’t one of our guild, just an over paid guard, dats all. He woulda never missed it. Just a little parting gift for us all.”

Disgust filled the short young woman’s face as she placed the silver necklace into Aelia’s hand.
“ere, you have it. Probably not as nice as the ones you got at home anyway. Was gonna use it to buy us all drinks but do with it as you will your highness.”

She took a mocking bow as she backed away. Somewhere in that bow she had drawn her dagger. The sharp blade flashed in the moonlight as it spun around in her hand. Then she was gone, having jumped into one of the caravans.

Meanwhile nearby, at the back of the other caravan, a struggled grunting could be heard coming from an old man trying to lift a large chest. His efforts were in vain but his wiry limbs and thin knotted muscles carried on trying. No one offered him help, instead keeping a wide berth around him.

You know it was betrayal, you just don’t know by whom or why. The image of that shining blood stained blade protruding from you is forever engraved into your mind's eye. It will haunt you, probably forever.

The sun was up high, its heat pouring down over the hilly plains where you now stood. In the vast middle of nowhere. Skyfell mountains could be seen to the north, an equal distance away was Brance down south.
You were not near the sea like you imagined to be, instead nearer Red Rock mountains than you had ever been. How you got here was still a complete mystery. Days away from anywhere.

Lucky for you, you were in a small patch of light forest that grew up around a long forgotten natural well, in the steep between two rolling hills. Here you had dirty water and light shade, and of course your first kill with the mysterious weapon.

The kill had come as an instinct. Lenna heard a sudden sound across from the well, and as if she were in trance, her hands reached for an arrow she didn't even know she had, pulled the arrow against the bowstring, and let it loose without the blink of an eye. The bowstring rattled, its sound like musical notes that brought to her a sense of nostalgia. Lenna finally became fully self-aware when she heard the animal's cry, and the sound of its body crashing the ground. She held the bow in front of her and examined it in disbelief. The bow was made of bones and had sharp antlers in the edges, it was no ordinary weapon.

As she examined the bow, her thoughts went back to her family. A bow was the weapon of choice of many of the elves she remembered seeing in the streets of Rhaegora, as a child. Her father himself used one. "Was that my father's voice? That can't be, it must have been some kind of hallucination... but then... how did I end up here?"

Her thoughts were still fuzzy, but she clearly remembered the sharp pain on her back and the sight of the blade in her chest before it all went dark. She wished that she could forget that moment and that feeling, that it could all just fade away, together with whatever had happened right after.

"I wonder what happened to the rest of the group, if Umbero is safe...", she tried to remember details about the blade that had stabbed her, but all blades look the same if you can only see the sharp end. One would think the attack likely came from guards protecting the manor, but she couldn't shake the feeling that it must have been an ambush, an inside job. The group seemed divided of late, and the silent animosity between Umbero and Faila grew more palpable by the day.
She couldn't risk going back now, and even if she could, why would she? The outlaws had taken her as hostage after all. But her thoughts betrayed her: Umbero had cared for her, and he deserved help if he were in danger.

Still divided, she looked around, as if trying to escape her thoughts, and saw her travel pack laying on the ground a few feet away from her. She walked towards it and, as she moved her arm to reach for the pack, she felt an eerie sensation on her hand. Lenna glanced at her fingers and had the impression that a purple glow flickered around her hand for just a fraction of a second. The elf turned her face up and immediately jumped back, startled. An ethereal floating hand held her pack in the air in front of her, as if offering it for her to take.

And just like that she had made her mind: she could not go back. She'd be grateful If her path crossed with Umbero again, but whatever was happening here, it was committed to fully draw her attention, and she needed to know what it was, and what it wanted from her, even if she didn't quite know where to start.

"I can cook - but not beyond the basics. My flavoring is meerly an illusion, albeit a handy one. Can't take too much mustard with you on campaign, but making a piece of flatbread taste like meatpie usually boosts moral quite a bit. It saved - maybe not our lives, but our sanity - while our squad was under siege and couldn't be relieved for three weeks. All we had was this Alchemy Jug and it was stuck on mayonnaise. That were bad weeks I tell you, but they would have been worse if it would have tasted like mayo as well. At least we had something to lubricate the walls and prevent those spiderclimbing bastards to get to us.
Sorry, I didn't catch your name. This is Daisy, Elphas and I am Lanius."

A frown appeared on his face as he saw the little sneak steal from a fellow soldier. But even before he could say anything, the newcomer had laid down the law. Definitely had to keep an eye on that one. Nothing destroyed moral as thoroughly as one mate stealing from the other. He wanted to say something, but noticed the man struggling with his load.
"One second."
He stepped away and without a further word, put his strength to that of the old man, helping him to heave the load in place.
As if nothing had happened he returned to the conversation.
"If you don't mind I'll bring back the stolen necklace."

Daisy seems a little uncomfortable at the newcomer-the poking first, and then the theft put her on edge. But she smiles at her anyway, and says Yes, introductions are in order. What can we call you?

The caravan seems mostly loaded, so Daisy looks for a good spot to take a seat. She tries to find an area open enough for at least one other person to sit with her, and manages to find one-though it'll be a bit cramped. Anyone want to join me for the ride? Be nice to talk to someone for the trip, and besides, we should really be getting to know one another, since we're to be working together.

The slaughtered moose was drinking from the natural well when it was shot down, its carcass laying right next to the water. And now it looks like another creature is also interested in your catch. When you go over to retrieve the fallen deer, you see a weasel tugging on the leg with its viscous sharp teeth.

Lenna had killed the moose in a moment of pure adrenaline and sense of danger, startled by the animal's movement in the corner of her eye, but now she realized how hungry she really was. She didn't know exactly where she was, and even less about where exactly to go, but she knew that she'd need as much food as she could carry. Moose meat sounded like a luxurious delicacy compared to the leftovers she had been fed in the past years.

As Lenna approached the moose's carcass, the elf noticed the weasel, desperate for the meat. "Hey buddy... I'd wager there's enough meat here for both us to share ya? Let me help you..." Lenna calmly whispered as she slowly and carefully closed in on the animal. Her hand lightly placed on the grip of one of her daggers, which she hoped she would have to use for no more than cutting moose meat.

Kneeling beside the cool shimmering water with your focus on the beast, you hear a faint whisper of a shout and notice movement in the corner of your eye. Your reflection in the pool was not obeying your actions but instead held out the bow and was firing in the direction behind you/itself.

Lenna squinted at her reflection, and as its arrow tensioned its bowstring, her eyes widened, and she quickly stood up, her hands instinctively and rapidly reaching for her bow and an arrow as she turned around.

Just in time to see the giant weasel approaching! It’s the size of a big dog but perhaps a bit longer.

Initiative: (1d20)[19]+2

As she turned around, Lenna saw the giant weasel growling and drooling, inching towards her, as if it were claiming the hunt prize for itself. Her eyelids twitched unsurely, she was alone and in immediate danger for the first time since she had been taken by the bandits. Her fight or flight instinct was kicking in as she readied the arrow. That’s when she heard a ghostly voice whisper in her ear “it’s okay”.

And as if touched by a spell, she suddenly became calm. Her hand surely placed the arrow back in the quiver, and her fingers danced as her hand quickly moved towards the pouch that hung from her belt. She felt as if she were a mere spectator watching her own body in motion. The elf's green eyes now glowed with a fierce shade of purple, and out of nowhere the booming roar of a huge beast came from behind her and towards the weasel, threatening the animal to back away. The loud noise startled Lenna, but her body didn't move at all, her feet firmly planted on the ground, and her eyes glowing deep as she intensely stared at the creature.

The giant weasel was definitely startled, it frantically looks around for the source but was unwilling to give up its prey so quick and easy.

Lenna picked up an arrow, and with impressive ability, she readied and fired at the giant weasel.
The ghostly voice whispered again in Lenna's ear "watch and learn".

More importantly each bench doubled as a bed and had a hammock above it, making it capable of sleeping four (or 5 if you use the foot room/floor)
Outside there were two seats up front and one on the roof.
One carriage had parts coloured blue while the other green.
2 large and strong looking horses stood before each carriage while another watched uninterested from nearby.

In the blue carriage was the frail old man who had struggled loading his gear. Next to him was a younger but still aged bald man with dark olive skin and tattoos darting over his exposed torso. He had a deep focus painted across his face and never looked up from his meditation.

The arrow struck the giant weasel true and sunk deep into its fur before it could attack. Blood trickled from the wound and it staggered, the voice in your head instructed you how to finish it off.

Lenna stood there for a moment, a second arrow in hand, ensuring the giant weasel wouldn't move. She had not meant to kill the creature, but as she slowly approached its body and examined the wound, she realized she did not know how to save it either. The wound was way too deep. Whomever it was that wanted to show her how it is done had really gone all in. She pulled off one of her daggers and finished the animal off, ending its suffering.

Now out of danger, she went back to the dead deer carcass. Dagger in hand, she knelt and sliced and packed as much meat as she could. Then she doubled back to the weasel once again, pulled the arrow off its body, and placed a piece of moose meat in front of it, as a gesture of respect.

She was ready to leave when she heard the ethereal voice calling her again: "Lenna...", this time, the voice seemed to be coming from the well.
She knelt next to the water, and her reflection slowly started to blur and shift, first into the image of her father, and then her father's mother, and then other elves with familiar faces she didn't quite fully recognize, and then everything else became blurred, and then dark.

...

"Grandma? What is this? Who... Who's there?" Lenna slowly opened her eyes, the reflection of the sun light on the water surface invading her senses with a calm and warm feeling. Everything was quiet at first, but slowly the rustle of the trees and the sound of the water gradually came to her. She stood up feeling that something had changed, she felt in control.

"Could this really be my family reaching to me? Or something else, using them to trick me? This magic feels powerful, but it also feels tainted... and yet, more than anything, it feels good... " Lenna snapped her finger, and she could hear the roar of the beast again. This time it didn't startle her, but she heard the sounds of scared vermin running away in the woods. "If I am to understand who saved me and what it wants from me, I must first understand more about magic, more about these spells.".

The morning sun shone mildly in the sky, but Lenna felt a pull in her heart telling her to go in the opposite direction, away from the sun. And so she did, setting out in her journey.

The dwarf captain was in shock when he was handed his necklace, gratitude swept over his face along with a deep worry, it clearly held some sentimental value. He thanked Lanius deeply, grabbing the elf’s shoulder to do so. He began inspecting the clasp when he was suddenly distracted by a noise down the street.

One of the light guards sitting on the carriage gave Lanius a nod acknowledging his offer but holding the seat for now. There were two light guards floating around the carriages that were dressed slightly different to the others. Their equipment looked of better quality, they themselves seemed more experienced and traveled.

From down the street, the way you all came, a sudden commotion erupts as the light guards on duty start shouting loudly.
They try in vain to enforce their authority through sheer loudness alone, as if the volume of their commands will make all the difference.
Clearly early talking had no effect, and even now as their voices break under the sheer strain of their continued shouts, two lone figures ignore their calls and continue to walk down the street toward you unhindered.
Carrying no lights, the two were but silhouettes in the light of the guards behind them.
On the left was a tall and imposing figure, most likely taller than any man you had ever met so far, standing at about 8 feet in height, it was obvious why the guards used only words. The other figure was pitiful in comparison, maybe 5ft tall, rounder and walked with a swagger while waving an arm in the air. In that hand was something, but at this distance it couldn’t be seen.

Every one around you stopped what they were doing and just watched with anticipation.

All the other guards were standing back or had occupied themselves elsewhere, leaving the captain to address this on his own. Meanwhile the three light guards still followed sheepishly from behind at a safe distance.

”s, sorry captain. This one hasn’t got any papers.” one of the light guards managed to mutter.
The captain replies furiously with both alarm and frustration.
”Nevermind that! Bok, you still have two days left in the stocks! What are you doing out!?”
The dwarfs face was red with anger at this defiance. The tall one called Bok merely shrugged. It was then the shorter and much hairier man spoke. His words were slurred and the stench of alcohol and vomit was permeating strongly from him.
“Ti’sh orr ok.” he managed to roll the words out as he sway about, struggling to keep his eyes a focused. “Tis ok. Dis is mah noo fr’nd. ‘E ‘nna come too.”

The drunkard mutters some more nonsensical things, possibly in another language.
DC 10 perception to notice the paper in his hand is his paper of passage. (At disadvantage unless you walk close to him.)

Everyone else just looks around at each other, unsure what to do and looking for someone’s lead. Even the dwarf seemed momentarily lost for words or actions, this could be due to the situation being above him or that he was simply frozen by rage.

The giant of a man just stood there and gave a toothy grin but still said nothing.

Elphas is the first to recover from the momentary group surprise, and he strides forward to greet the newcomers. As he does so, he notices the papers in the furry man's hand. He calls out to the captain: "This man has his papers in order. And I'm sure that whatever Bok did to land himself in the stocks, he'll have ample opportunity to make it up to us on the journey to Greenville. After all, Xelenos teaches us that all deserve a chance to correct their missteps." He then smiles kindly at the furry man and attempts to gently take his arm. "Come, friend, we should get you sitting down. You've had a bit too much, I think."

Daisy's a little taken aback at their sudden appearance, but shrugs to herself. "It's a pleasure to meet you both! I admire your ferocious looks-I've never been good at looking intimidating myself. More talky than scary."

She takes two of her seeds, muttering the incantations needed, and offers each of the newcomers a daisy. "Here-something to brighten your day a little!"

The odd duo accepted their gifts from daisy.
The beardless dwarf thought on those words but didn’t reply straight away. He watched the tall man intently.
The drunk, who announced himself as Corey, was overly thankful for your assistance, and decided to celebrate, with another bottle of booze that he had stashed in his small bag. He kindly offered it around to his new friends before crawling up (after a failed attempt or two) into the green carriage where Eisha sat. The drunk was not aware of her sour expressions and started a one sided conversation anyway. He seemed excited about adventures.

The man called Bok still did not speak but seemed interested by Daisy. He watched her while he awaited the final verdict. Still never speaking but holding gently her flower.

Meanwhile a thin halfelf with soft features, bright green eyes and long platinum blonde hair that lay braided reaching down her back to her legs, called everyone’s attention with a soft word that magically carried far. She wore an expensive red cloak and the clothing beneath was pristine. Simple yet exquisite jewellery adorned her neck and fingers.

”Time to get moving.” she said flatly with an unreadable smile. Her every mannerism and movement sought to draw you in but her kindness was conflicted by the disdain that she did not hide from her eyes.
”Pick a carriage, Adreal will be here soon and then we are leaving.”

After the brief pause to hear her words, commotion picked up again as guards, both light and city, quickly finished preparing the horses and carriages.

Still attempting to assist Corey (and subtly trying to keep him from drinking any more), Elphas will climb into the green carriage. Lanius smiled at Daisy - it was incredibly easy to smile with that little sunshine around - and nodded: "Sure, that's why I asked." With long strides, he made his way to the green carriage to join his new team mates. He waved to the guard captain Dorgan before entering the cart.
Pulling out the deck, he inspected it before starting a game. "Sorry, only got those very recently and haven't had a chance yet to take a closer look."
Again he used the small bit of magic, to remove the grime from the cards - and incidentally some not so innocent marks the previous owner had put on the backsides.

"We used to play Dragon Poker while we waited for mission. Hurry up and wait. My old squad mate Diomedea Exulans told me the rules as did her previous veteran squad mate - and I see it as my sacred duty to continue this fine tradition.

Eisha replies to Elphas over the drunk and interrupting Corey. ”Yes it is.” she says with a smile just before Corey’s face gets in the way. ”and I’m afraid we still won’t get to talk for a while.” with that her eyes narrowed into a death stare at the drunk which went totally unnoticed by the target as he ignorantly broke out into a song.
The seated light guard tried to ignore it as he looked over the card game.

———-

The guard captain had finally come to a decision, after mulling it over for some time.
”Bok! I hear by command you to complete your sentence by escorting this convoy to Greenville.”

Through the open carriage door you could see Bok check in on Corey, he wanted to join his carriage but it was obvious it would be too cramped. After some quick calculations he went off to the blue carriage, to the dismay of a few others that climbed in behind him.

Once everyone was settled in a carriage, just as impatience began to set in upon the nervous, Adreal finally arrives. A bright light emanating from his hand lead the way. The tall handsome man used his other arm to support and half carry the bandit that nearly all had seen the guards beating up.

“He is coming with us, help him into a carriage.” Adreal politely ordered with a voice that gently commanded respect and attention. The bandit only muttered soft praise and thanks, his face mostly concealed by his hood still bore the marks of emotional tears. He followed Bok into the blue carriage.

Adreal never took a carriage, instead mounting the remaining horse and leading the way.

The dwarven captain shouted some commands, with a loud groaning creaking the large wooden gate doors slowly swung open. The slow building momentum of the carriages came to a complete halt. The nervous gasps of many men outside your carriage could be heard as they all happened in unison. What followed next was the clink of weapons being drawn and the whoosh of new fires being lit.

CHAOS
Shadows & fire

There beyond the gates, just at the edge of torchlight, darker patches of shadows writhed and moved.
They seemed to wait hungrily just at the lights edge, just out of the range of clear vision.

“I ain’t ever seen dis many together.” one of the town light guards said, squinting out into the darkness with his torch held high. His partner on the other side of the gate replied.
“Ent no problem, shadows are still just shadows ‘n’ can’t handle the radiance of Sune.” With that he muttered a little prayer to the goddess of love and beauty while walking out through the gates holding up his lantern.
The shadows seemed to almost hiss and back away a little further at this. Their forms melding and separating as they passed one other. Existing as densities of rolling darkness with no form to tell off, but not reaching higher than 7ft.
While still uttering prayers he took out a small mirrored plate from his lantern as he began to ask Sune for sanctuary from these creatures.
Suddenly a deep terrifying howl came from the otherwise deathly silent shadows, interrupting his spell. It was quickly followed by another and another. Each one triggering the the next from across the expanse of light. The shadows answering the calls, creating a terrifying cacophony.

DC 13 will save (with advantage) Or be panicked.

The Lightguard of Sune never finished his spell as his faith and confidence wavered under all the noise. The darkness pushed back against his light and the shadows started to take some form.

In near unison, something low, like a dog, darted across the clearing and tripped the man as it did. No sooner had the light guard fallen another low shadow fluttered last him snatching the lantern from his hand.
Now that it was holding the light, you could distinguish the powerful jaw, chest and front legs of pitch black mastiff seemingly made from shadow. It took the light and ran off. The man let out a terrified scream as more of these smaller shadows charged forth and seemed to overwhelm him by latching on.

The shadows start looming towards the gates, in your peripheral you are sure some have already slipped past. The Light guards that didn’t flee are quickly muttering spells as new bright lights suddenly appear. The guards not cowering in panic are lighting torch after torch. One on the gate was coherent enough to follow his training, lighting and releasing a small flood of defensive burning oil. It splashed down heavily outside the gate. It caught a brave glowing light guard who had stepped forward to defend the entrance, he now screamed while covered in fire. The oil seperate the oncoming shadows. Over half backed away from the giant flames, others that were already past the line entered through the gate. They couldn’t hide from the all the light and engaged in battle.

A fierce fight is happening at the gate. Adreal still on horseback is a mighty sight to see as he cuts down shadows with mighty blows from his holy mace. Town guards fight desperately for their lives against these dark creatures, working in trained unison while light guards swoop in and out of battle with both physical and magical support. There is little room for you in that battle with these trained warriors, however there are still disasters left unattended.

1. Eisha leapt over everyone in the carriage and rushed out, the panic clear on her white face. She got five steps before a dog took her down. It stands over her growling hungrily.

2. A taller almost humanoid shadow figure could be noticed only by the small faint glow of what was once burning oil on his back, could be seen entering a house where their lantern had gone out.

3. A wayward torch was flung and landed under one of the blue carriages wheels. Flames licked up the wood threatening to soon climb it.

4. Bok roared as his large body was brought down by the many lumps of shadow stuff, stuck on to him like giant leeches.

5. A small group of small shadows took off in the direction of a dark alleyway where they could probably hide and disappear.

6. A female warrior stood over the bandit protecting him from increasingly overwhelming odds.

Lanius' dark thoughts weren't quite finished when the catastrophe happened. For a moment, he felt paralysed, unable to move while he relived some of the horrors of the war again. 'On your feet soldier' He suddenly remembered the mantra, that had been hammered into his mind again and again 'your squad mates rely on you'. That broke the spell. Still shaking, Lanius got up. It felt as if he was moving through molasses, every movement a fight against an invisible current threatening to ripp him off his feet.
Discipline. That's why you train. That's why you do things again and again until you don't have to think about them and can leave your body to take care.
So first things first. Get a light. Save your mates.
Aelia had taken care of the torch under the cart, so he drew a torch from his backpack and gave it a little magic to ignite the oiled wick. With large steps, he moved towards the fallen Bok, waving the torch around to dislodge the leaching shadows. "ON YOUR FEET. SHOW THOSE BASTARDS WHAT YOU ARE MADE OFF!"
The first words had sounded faintly strangled, but the war cry, so often shouted so often heard, came nearly automatically over his lips.

No.
None of that.

A quick glance around showed him that the most urgent problem was Eisha. While the others were hurling various magics at her attacker, none could stop the beast from taking another bite out of her. Even as his mind came to this conclusion his body was already charging forward, planting his stance overtop the unconscious girl and swinging his Morningstar at the shadowy beast. Daisy’s frost spell never held, as the inky black creature shook it off with little effort. Aelia’s fire bolt had caused it to flinch buying Eisha valuable seconds and possibly saving her life.
It gave Elphas the chance to interpose himself between the stumbling Eisha and the hungry beast. Swinging his morningstar, the beast backed away a few steps evading the attack. A deep angry growl was coming from the viscous concentration of darkness, in the shadows of its self a large mouth could be seen, sharp pointy teeth glistening with drool snapped at the air.

Four of these creatures had latched onto Bok, clinging to his large body with their many sharp teeth. Lanius’s words had brought Bok to his feet with a mighty roar. Once again standing, with an awkward stretch, his fingers managed to reach one of the creatures on his back and he easily peeled it from his body, letting it fall at Lanius’s feet. He then stumbled 15 ft, crashing into the green carriage with a heavy thud, shaking the whole thing.

The creature Lanius removed, did not strike at him as he left it, seemingly distracted by the torch still in his hand. Meanwhile, Bok had just pounded his fist right through one of the creatures on his chest. Thick black ichor dripped from his hand as the shadowy abomination both melted and evaporated away, dissipating into a fine mist until it vanished completely and was once again one with the shadows.

Eisha acknowledged Elphas as she stood, still trembling slightly. She was behind the dog now and a dagger appeared in her hand. She took a slight step forward before catching and locking eyes with Elphas. That’s when he knew what she was going to do, it was written on her face as plain as day. The years on the streets looking out for herself taught her only one way to react. She mouthed an apology that was mimicked in her eyes, then she turned and fled.

Elphas left alone to fight the beast, ended the already injured creature with a fierce blow. The doglike shadow crashed to the ground where it began to lose form and melt away, fading away into the shadows.

Aelia’s Fire Bolt hit true. The shadow that wrapped over the driver quickly slunk off him. Looking a bit paler, the driver was quick and knew his job, he held the reigns tight and prevented the horse from running, even as it stomped at the shadows around its feet.

The dark shadow that was attacking the driver, requiring little form, travelled across the seat and slipped into the carriage through the tiny window space to where Corey still sat alone.

Adreal released a powerful holy spell that lit up the clearing and momentarily emptied it of shadows. While a few guards lay scattered around, dead or dying, it was clear that they seemed to be winning. The presence and occurrence of the night monsters constantly dwindling.

Lanius moved over to Bok - having learned the trick to knock off the mawed shadows, he took care of the one remaining on his back with a high kick.
"There, that's taken care of - now go and help Correy, I've got to try and help that guard over there."
Lanius called to Bok before moving away again, heedless of the creature he just removed, moving fast and making his torch flare to get over to the woman trying to keep the bandit alive.
"Move over, that scum on the ground is not worth your life", he called out to her.

Aelia gives the driver a nod of the "good job not freaking out and doing what you're supposed to under pressure" variety, then turns around and calls to the others, "Can someone help Corey? A shadow went into the cart and...." then she hurls a streak of fire at one of the shadows attacking Bok and the woman helping him. Hoping the "my move here is throwing around fire and maybe doing that into our vehicle isn't a good plan" message she wants to convey gets picked up by the others.

Due to passing her Perception and Arcana check she's aware the shadows are dealing necrotic damage to at least Bok and the woman helping hm. She'd imagine probably everyone. Though this is just sort of a mental note given nobody is especially weak or strong against it in the group as far as she's aware.

The last shadow is knocked off Bok before it can bring him any further damage, freeing the living mountain to rush to Corey’s aid. He looked weary but was determined to help his friend and quickly disappeared into the carriage on the advice of others. Meanwhile a fire bolt from Aelia hits a charging shadow causing it’s momentum to come to a grinding halt before it slowly faded away into nothingness.

Springing up from seemingly nowhere, a humanoid figure of darkness lashes out at Aelia but does not get through her defences.

The fatiguing woman replied to Lanius with laboured breaths in between the wide swings of her sword that kept the monsters at bay. ”Adreal.. he tasked me to look after, him, so I shall and will defend him, against....” her words drifted off as they began to require too much strength. Despite being a muscular and fit woman, she appeared to be struggling with the weight of her own broadsword.
Just as she fell a bright blinding light took the battlefield followed by the sound of charging feet quickly approaching.

Having seen the flashing display of lights and magic from the distance, the cities reinforcements were on their way. Some already close enough to launch spells.
(Will arrive next round)

A nearby shadow beast turned around from the woman and lashed out snarling and bitting at Lanius.

Elphas crashes into the room of the scene. It was a small house with few rooms. This was the main bedroom. A distraught woman stood in the corner with a crying child in her arms as she herself screamed and sobbed. A lantern lay at her feet, tipped over with the fuel slowly spreading.
On the bed, in the dim light, a man struggled with a tall malevolent shadow leaning over him. The strangest thing tho was the mans own shadow. It grew darker than it should be and no longer bent to the light, instead slightly wriggling on its own. But it was still just that, a flat shadow, unlike the creature above him suffocating the life from him.

Both of the new potential guild members gave a swing and a miss at their own opponents. It did not matter though, for the fight at the front line had come to an end. Guards, light guards and an unmounted Adreal stormed into the fray attacking any remaining dark abominations.
While they did not have the numbers they first possessed, from here out the shadow creatures were still vastly outnumbered and were easily dispatched.
Any one defending against a creatures attack received aid from a nearby trained guard as they used their numbers effectively and attacked back in tandem.

((Optional: Feel free to insert your own theatrical fluff, creative writing encounter here, no rolls required. Lots of guards around offering/needing aid. Ask questions for clarification and remember not everyone can be a hero))

In a moment the battle was over. Ending as fast as it began. A tense ready silence took the people, replacing the noises of combat as everybody looked around wearily for the next foe, all senses at the ready.
A sudden loud creak and heavy crash broke the silence causing many to jump in alarm as the green carriage tipped over.

Corey flopped out the top hatch, shadow ichor dissipating from around his mouth while Bok crawled out of the side facing door and crashed to the floor looking drained with obvious signs of necrotic damage running across his veins and under his skin.

——

Over by the bandit who was now standing with a nervous uncertainty, Adreal knelt beside and cradled the fallen woman. Next to them, also kneeling was the blonde haired half elf with the expensive red coat. Perception check:
DC 10, the cloak doesn’t get dirty.

The duo used all the magic remaining available to them to aid the fallen woman and then resorted to assisting with physical healing and herbs. Treating her wounds as best they could with what they had. The half elf offered a soft soothing lullaby, her voice sweet and melodic.

Insight check:
DC 5, the trio were close
DC 10, they had all known and worked closely with each other for sometime
DC 15 both women near worshipped Adreal and while he cared for them he did not return their level of affection.

“You should have listened to that wood elf” Adreal said to the unconscious woman in his arms. ”Next time, listen to him...” he spoke from a place of concern, without much thought on his words as he rocked back n forth cradling her head. Next he went on to pray, not realising the impact those last few innocent words would later have on the entire guild and its future.

At least she was alive.

Lanius felt - for the first time in a long time - entirely calm. He was in battle again and everything around him had that crystal clear focus he had missed so much. There were fellow soldiers there to watch his back and his muscle knew what to do without having to pester his brain about it - thanks to the endless drills they had endured.
Stab, step aside, parry. Let the guard through with the two handed sword, kick at the shadow dog that tries to attack the man's rear.
When the battle ended, he was barely able to stay upright and had to lean against a wall. The last few days caught up to him again as the adrenaline faded.
Breathing heavily he watched the scene unfold. With a grim face he looked at the scene that unfolded before his eyes.

Just before darkness enveloped the helpless young innocent, a blur rolled past the mothers feet, grasped the fallen lantern, sprung up into the air with it and brought it around in a wide crushing arc to smash against the foul creatures face.
Eisha didn’t stop there, as the creature melted to the floor, it’s head smouldering with faint flames, she pounced down on it and continued to stab her dagger through it’s ethereal melting form, again and again even after it was gone and her blade found only the wood floor beneath.

The injured guards were thankful for Aelia’s help.

Aelia and a couple of light guards were now the only ones at the gate. One stood at the battlement above watching out into the darkness but it was only Aelia, who was looking for the injured, who glimpsed the dark floating shadow that had hung back the entire fight. There was something menacing in its hollow gaze and a feeling of dread emanating from the horned darkness that resembled a crown on its head.

To everyone’s surprise, the first guard to be set upon, the one laying beyond the gate, coughed, pluttering blood across the floor. While deathly injured and a bloody, fleshy mess, he was still alive.
That is until the dark ghost-like creature above him shoved a shadow claw into the mans chest. He convulsed once then fell still. Then as the the malevolent darkness above him retracted his arm, the lifeless body began convulsing erratically, as did every other fallen warrior in the area.

Having walked for numerous hours with no events, as the sky begins to show signs of night setting, you finally notice what looks like an old farmhouse long abandoned and over grown with vines and shrubbery. Around it are fields that have run wild. The odd bird circles overhead, occasionally swooping down at some unforeseen prey. It is still quite a walk away but you should be able to make it just before nightfall.

Lenna had been walking for many hours, and was starting to feel the weight of her equipment when she noticed what looked like an old farmhouse in the woods. The day was already turning to dusk and the near full moon shone low in the sky, but still Lenna thought it'd be best not to light any torches just yet as not to call any unwanted attention to herself.

The house was a lucky find, hopefully a safe haven for her to spend night, placed there for her by the gods. Or perhaps by some other entity who was out there looking out for her? Either way, she pressed forward.

From the distance the place looked abandoned, but she'd have to be careful in her approach anyway, as she knew that the shadowy creatures of the night could be hiding in any dark corner. Lenna hoped she'd make it to the farmhouse before nightfall, and with enough time to make preparations to ensure she'd have a safe night there.

Night began to descend faster than you had hoped while the distance remained great. Darkness slowly encroached where the sun once shone, its rays now lost behind the mountains. You are not sure if it is just your imagination or actually real but it seemed that the there were unnatural patches of darkness and the darker shadows were wriggling with life.

Lenna now realized that maybe she had underestimated the distance she'd been from the farmhouse. She'd been walking for a while already and the place still looked further than she wanted.

The elf tried to ignore the wriggling shadows around her and focus on her way forward, but she was more and more certain that she would not make it to the farmhouse before night was fully upon her. Thankfully the moon shone now up high in the sky, ensuring the night wouldn't be total darkness. She continued walking, but decided it would be wise to check if the shadows were following her, or even if they were anything at all. She did not want to be caught off guard.

Sure enough, what ever was happening in the darker shadows was supernatural.
In those places where the dying sun did not touch, there were orbs of darkness far blacker than should be. They had no physicality, but wriggled and writhed as they drew on the surrounding shadows to build their form.
Beneath the orb, from the ground, a black mist was drawn up to intertwine with each one.
As they grew in size, they began to bubble and their true form slowly took shape.

One nearby was further along than the others, there were at least six in various stages. Before it even had legs, a row of sharp violent teeth appeared and snapped at you.
It was ghostly and silent as if it were an illusion or not yet in this world.

Lenna jumped back as the ethereal shadow creature snapped at her. She'd heard stories about the shadow creatures of the night, but facing them alone in the open sounded like something she would rather avoid. She lit a torch and kept walking towards the farmhouse, while still facing the creatures, hoping she'd make it to the farmhouse safe, while bracing herself for the worst.

Lenna maintained her course towards the farmhouse, keeping an eye on the shadow creature that followed her, and looking ahead to make sure no other creatures would catch her off guard. One hand holding the torch, another on the handle of her dagger.

They walked on two thick legs and had a short stumpy tail that disappeared into the darkness.

Occasionally they would move further into the dim light only to retreat before nearing the brighter light the torch gave off.
But the more they followed, the braver or hungrier they became.
Looking forward again, something even smaller, the size of a large cat, shot through the torch light with amazing speed. It was just a blur of darkness, a fleeting silent shadow where one didn’t belong.

This carried on for some time. Night fell and the shelter in the distance could no longer be seen in the dark. A third stumpy creature joined the other two and once again their bravery increased. Lenna started to feel that soon they would attack.

Night finally came, and Lenna found herself in the dark, with the dark creatures nearing her. The torch light, her only defense against the creatures, seemed to keep them at bay at first, but they seemed to grow more defiant against the light as they grew in numbers.

"What do these creatures want with me? Will arrows even work against them? ... Well... It doesn't seem like have an option..."

Lenna dropped the torch on the ground right next to her, the light should give her an edge in the combat against the creatures. She pulled her bow, and shot an arrow at the creature closest to her.

Attack: (1d20+5)[13]
Damage: (1d8+3)[10]

The arrow sinks into the darkness but never slows, having just missed the target.
One of the creatures retaliates, charging with a horribly raspy screech.
Its aim is way off as it stops early to retreat back to the darkness.

Lenna pulls another arrow to shoot at the creature as it darted back to the darkness, but misses again.

Attack: (1d20+5)[12]

One at a time two more creatures dash at Lenna, their eagerness to get out of the light causing them to miss as they continue scurrying past.

The two shadows dash at Lenna, but the elf dances around them, and then quickly reaches for another arrow. She takes an extra second aiming, shoots, misses... "At this rate I am going to run out of arrows!"

Attack: (1d20+5)[9]

Lenna learns something troubling. These creatures, while terrible at coordinating themselves, work far better in groups.

Two charge in unison and their attacks were much harder to avoid.
One caught her and sunk many of its teeth into her leg (5 piercing damage). But worse, the creature hung on, suckling on the wound it had caused, dangling by its round maw.

When the creature attacks Lenna, the sudden pain turns into fear which quickly becomes ire. Her eyes lighten up with a spectral purple shade, her mouth opens wide with a monstrous grin, letting out a harsh and piercing cry, and her ire is consumed as if fueling the purple flames that appear around her assailant.

HP: 15/21
Reaction: cast Hellish Rebuke. Dexterity DC 13. Take (2d10)[7] fire damage on failure, half if successful.

The creature lets out an awful muffled wet shriek and writhes around but does not let go.

As the creature burns, Lenna's appearance turns back to normal. She drops her bow at her feet, away from the torch, picks up her daggers, one in each hand, and stabs the creature with both weapons simultaneously, in a desperate move.

Attack 1: (1d20+4)[18], Damage: (1d4+2)[3]
Attack 2: (1d20+4)[16], Damage: (1d4)[3]

Lenna feels the creature go limp, its body starts to deform and return back to the shadows. Its own dark mass peeling off as it both slowly melts away and dissipates into nothingness. A fine dust falls from the body and sinks into the earth.

The elf can not examine the scene for too long though as the remaining two attack.
Their stubby small forms charging at Lenna through the light.

One of them misses and runs back away from the light of the torch, but the other takes advantage of Lenna's injury. It bites and attaches itself to the elf's leg, just like the first one had done before (6 piercing damage).

Lenna barely manages to rid herself of the latched creature, and two other ones are already on her. The second one attacks and latches onto her leg just as the first had done, but the elf is still able to stretch herself and dig her dagger into the third creature as it ran past her.

Lenna let out a cry of agony as the creature suckled on her leg, draining her energy... She felt like her leg wanted to give in to the pain, but she fought through it.

As she pulled the dagger from the darting creature, her arms quickly came down again, with full force attacking the beast latched onto her. She had no finesse or technique left at this point, only pure and raw survival instinct.

HP: 9/21

Attack of Opportunity on darting creature: (1d20+4)[19], Damage: (1d4+2)[3]
Attack 1 on latched creature: (1d20+4)[10], Damage: (1d4+2)[3]
Attack 2 on latched creature: (1d20+4)[12], Damage: (1d4)[3]

The darting stabbed monster continues to run out of the light. Lenna can see it pause 40ft away at the edge of the torches radius.

Meanwhile both dagger attacks failed to bring damage to the creature latched onto the elf's leg. It refuses to let go instead suckling on the injury, its many teeth pulsating in its vile maw (8 necrotic damage).

Lenna felt a strong pull in her leg, which was about to give in, in a desperate move she dropped her daggers, and grabbed the creature with both her hands and yanked it away from her leg with all the strength she had, grinding her teeth. She carelessly threw it away from her, then picked up her weapons and her torch, and ran.

After the horrific rising of of the dead spirits, they were all soon put to rest.
Ganging up was your advantage but the specters still didn’t go down without first inflicting some injuries. lose 1d8hp each.
Injured and weary guards waited an extra moment to ensure it was truly over before turning their attention to the badly wounded and then later, the dead. Others simply slumped down in exhaustion or grief, needing a moments rest to process what had just happened.

It soon became clear and the main focus of many, that the green carriage was damaged in its fall. It would not be able to travel without repair. However the plan still remained. Adreal called all to attention and addressed the crowd.

As many as could fit would travel ahead in the blue, wasting no more time. The light of day would soon be breaking and time was already lost. Supplies would be reduced to accommodate the people. Adreal would remain with the broken green carriage and would follow along once it was repaired, ensuring all that he would catch up.

The plan was to make it to a certain farmhouse before the following nightfall and set up a safety perimeter. Wanting to make sure his injured female friend made it there before dark he sent her with the first carriage.

He turned to Aelia, who since meeting earlier he had grown fond of.
”Seat Gaider in the corner,” he motions to the semi unconscious fighter that he was healing. ”fill the benches with four a side. You will need a driver, companion and lookout for the top. You sort that, I have to take care of some other things.”

Clasping a hand on Lanius’s shoulder he adds ”This one goes with.” still speaking to Aelia.

After hearing his command, all others looked to Aelia expectantly in anticipation. No one wanted to ride the late carriage and possibly get stuck out in the dark.

"I'll take a post as driver or lookout." Lanius said. He still felt shame about freezing up when the specter arose. This time he had survived it, but it certainly wasn't something he wanted to make a habit out of.

"Me?" Aelie says in surprise that she's picking their group. Then she shrugs and goes about selecting members. She deliberates quite a bit, but in the end she chooses to leave behind the "bandit" (she doesn't know if he is or not, but she feels like Eisha probably doesn't need a bad influence around if it's true), the monk, and the light guards (as she feels it's more likely they'll needed all that much more in the later trip).

She doesn't go as far as assigning seats though, and just takes one inside the carriage for herself.

You notice a lone tree in the distance, your insight tells you that you could easily climb it, but these small stubby two legged creatures couldn’t. They were also quite physically weak.

However, these creatures move fast, and they are after you.

As Lenna started running, she noticed the creatures giving chase, so she turned, and looked at the one closest to her. Her eyes again shone with a spectral purple light, her hair stood on its ends, and her mouth deformed as she let out a ghostly screech at the monster.

cast Cause Fear, range: 60ft. Creature must pass a DC 13 wisdom save or be frightened.
She didn't waste time checking the effect of her spell though. She just turned back around, and ran, limping her way towards the emptiness ahead, anything away from the wretched shadow creatures.

In the distance, she saw in the dark the silhouette of a tree that could be the safe haven the farmhouse had failed to be. Her last hope. "Fitting for an elf, even if an exiled one..."

Lenna couldn’t tell if the spell worked or not, having wasted no time to check. The tree neared and something was approaching behind her. She had gotten much further than expected. A quick glance back revealed only the already injured monstrosity, the other was further back but still coming, presumably too frightened to follow with full haste.

All alone, the one at her feet hadn’t the courage or support it gained from being around others of its kind and its attack was sloppy, missing as its momentum and trajectory were predictable.

Lenna would have to drop the torch to immediately climb the tree. A suitable low branch available to get her off the floor with many bundled together to make climbing an easy task.

Lenna dropped the torch against the tree, and climbed it as fast as she could. Luckily the arrangement of the branches made it an easy task.
From the top, she kept an eye on the creature below, and took a good look at the wound on her leg while she took off her pack. One of the thicker branches of the tree branched out into multiple smaller branches, forming something akin to a web, where she placed her pack snug against the foliage. She tore a piece of her garment and dabbed the wound, the marks of the wretched creature's teeth still burning on her flesh.

"What am I doing? What am I thinking? How can I survive on my own like this?"

She rested her head against one of the twisted branches, took a deep breath, and finally felt the heavy weight on her shoulders fade away. Judging by the creature's legs and the size of the tree, it seemed like the night and its monsters would finally let her get some rest. She hoped her feelings of loneliness and uncertainty would too.

Once the decision was made, things began to move quick with a sense of urgency behind it.

The trip is estimated to take four long days and three short nights. You should make it to your first stop just before nightfall. An old built up farmhouse that has since been converted to a travellers lodge.
No one can confirm its condition since it has not been used in a while but in the past it has kept brave travellers safe on their journey.

It is here the second carriage should catch up.

Decide how you will spend the next 12 to 14 hours in or on the carriage, who will you talk to? What games will you play? What questions do you ask? What info do you share? How do you pass the time?

Remove any rations you eat or water you drink.

Soon there were about four or five of those stumpy creatures hovering at the light's edge.
Occasionally in the distance, the blur of those smaller things dashed around but never neared the tree.
Time passed and the torch light gradually grew dimmer and dimmer, soon to go out.

Lenna was almost falling asleep when she noticed the restless creatures getting closer.

"The torch!"

The torch's light was no longer as bright as it was when she reached the tree.
The elf pulled another torch from her pack, lit it up, and carefully dropped it on the ground, on the same grassless patch where the other torch laid.

Lenna picked her bow and an arrow, and readied herself to fire at any creature that tried to come too far into the light's radius. The pain and the adrenaline rush were now giving away to her tiredness, she wanted to rest, but it seemed like the moonlit night wouldn't make it easy.

It was clear nothing would approach within the light.
The creatures momentarily retreated and then again returned but never coming within 40ft of the torch. The tree trunk however did cast a long shadow that offered them some protection and a chance to get a little nearer.

Seeing that the creatures seemed to gather closer to the tree's own shadow, Lenna reached for a third torch, lit it and dropped it on the other side of the tree, as to lighten up the whole area surrounding its trunk.

"Let’s see if you like this..."

Sure enough they scattered from the extra light, keeping even further away than before.
While they could be heard rustling in the distance they gave little focus to Lenna now, seemingly giving up on her for easier prey.

The extra light seemed to have worked. The creatures were now further away, the little noises of their rustling now a secondary thought in Lenna's mind. She kept the grip on her bow, but her mind started to drift off, the eyelids started to give.

[...]

She saw her mother again, surrounded by a bright light. She hadn't seen her mother in a long time, but the fair and perfectly combed long hair contrasting with the greenish skin was impossible not to recognize. Lenna reached for her mother, but something was amiss. Her mother's physiognomy started to shift, her face deforming with monstrous qualities: her mouth opened wide with a terrifying grin, her teeth protruding into fangs. The fair and combed hair now a big spiked mess, and her eyes sparkled with phantasmagorical purple light that cut deep into Lenna. She took a step back, and felt a stingy pain in her leg. She looked down but her limbs were all fine, when she looked up again, her mother was gone. Now she only saw a dark creature with short legs and a circular mouth. Everything was dark, still and cold.

[...]

You got 3 hours sleep before awoken by a changing mix of ghastly howls, clicking and high pitched shrieks. One of these buggers chattering away loudly as it climbs the tree, grinning with bright teeth and a maniacal glee in its eyes. It’s only about 2ft tall.

Short rest:
Use 1 hit die: (1d8+1)[4]

Lenna woke up alarmed by the feline-looking shadow that was starting to climb the tree. The creature had two forward-facing bulging eyes that made it look constantly startled. It had a protruding underbite, exposing its bright crooked sharp lower teeth. The ears were similar to a cat's ears, but proportionally much larger than its head. Even though it had a feline appearance, the creature's limbs were like elven limbs, long and slender arms and legs, with hands and feet.

Lenna was feeling shaky, as if she had had a bad dream that she already couldn't quite remember, but nevertheless she felt somewhat reinvigorated, albeit still not in her best state.
Her heart pumped a tiny bit stronger, and a her fingers tingled. She couldn't quite explain how, but she knew that meant her spell powers were again flowing inside of her.
She gave the creature an intense stare with her purple lit eyes, and again let out a ghostly screech towards it, as if pushing the beast away with her will.

Cast Cause Fear, Wisdom DC 13 or be frightened.

She then lit another torch, dropped on the ground, and tried to go back to sleep.

"Annoying little devils..."

The creature's ears pricked up at the sound and its mad gibberish chattering only intensified with excitement as it moved with a hungry determination. (Immune to Fear)

Seeing that the creature didn't budge, Lenna pulled an arrow and readied for an attack. Before shooting, she looked deep into the creature's eyes and gave it a smirk, with her momentaneously deformed and fanged mouth.

Cast Hexblade Curse, then attack.
Attack: (1d20+5)[22], damage: (1d8+5)[7] piercing

The arrow tears it off the tree and and drives the little creature to the ground where it finally falls still and quiet.
You can hear more of them in the far distance but they don’t seem to be coming any closer.
They definitely wouldn’t be able to sneak up on you.
With a new torch lit you know you have an hour of light protecting your tree.

It felt good to shoot down the climbing monster, and it gave Lenna a little more energy. She could still hear more monsters away from the light, and one of the two legged creatures seemed to be close enough, so she pulled another arrow and took another shot.

Recover 4 HP from Hexblade Curse.
Attack: (1d20+5)[17], damage: (1d8+3)[11]

Moments after the small gibbering creature fell, three stumpy two legged creatures raced into the light around the tree searching for easy prey.
Instead one found only an arrow to its head, an arrow that ended its life. The other two began scattering away.

"Oh wow, am I finally learning how to use this bow?"
"These two legged shadow leeches look as clumsy as they are irritating..."
"I wonder if there's a proper name for them..."

Lenna smiled, and tried to go back to sleep.

You complete another short rest and are awoken by a distant cacophony of that maddening howling and gibberish clicking screams. Where you saw only one before, now they are but a bobbing sea of tightly packed violent hungry little creatures.
They are far from you but swarm across the land as one, heading towards the farmhouse.

Probably the most scary and worrisome thing was the sudden and instant silence that consumed the land. Their cries faded so fast and vanished almost as if magically, now nothing gave away their presence.

Meanwhile from the other direction, a lone carriage was heading towards the very same farmhouse. It was quite far but you had a good vantage point from your spot in the tree.

If you ran you might just be able to intercept them just before they got there but you notice at least two creatures between you and the carriage.

One a small gibbering thing and the other one of the leeches.

Lenna had never seen something like that, the creatures started acting in unison, forming a swarm that acted as a single entity. Slowly they moved in the direction of the farmhouse, until she couldn't see them anymore. She was afraid, but even more, she was curious and amazed. In a way, she now felt lucky she hadn't been able to make it all the way to the farmhouse.

As the swarm moved away into the horizon, something else caught Lenna's attention in the corner of her eye: a carriage, isolated and riding in the dark towards the same farmhouse. Without hesitation and any pondering Lenna picked up her equipment and jumped off the tree.

"They are riding into a trap!"

As she started off towards the caravan, she noticed the two creatures on her way. She focused on the leech, and let out a ghostly screech towards it. She then pulled her bow, and cautiously moved a few steps towards the caravan.

Object interaction: pickup pack.
Movement: jump off the tree, then move 10ft towards caravan.
Action: cast Cause Fear on the stumpy creature.

The necroleech quickly fled into the distance.
Meanwhile the smaller, noisy creature continued its mad endless gibbering and started towards you with a maniacal glee. (40ft away)

Lenna smiled when she noticed the short two-legged creature running away.

"No time for joy, Lenna!"
She turned her gaze to the other monster that was making clicking noises and advancing in her direction.

As she moved, Lenna pulled her bow and as she readied her arrow, she looked deep into the creature's eyes, her face momentaneously contorted in a ghastly shape, and then she fired.

Bonus action: cast Hexblade Curse
Longbow Attack: (1d20+5)[16]
Damage: (1d8+5)[6] Piercing
If the creature dies, recover 4 HP, and move at full speed, 35, towards the caravan, otherwise stay put.

Still alive but not happy it screeches as it charges towards you. (15ft away)

As she heard the creature's screech, Lenna stopped in her tracks, pulled another arrow, and shot again.

Longbow Attack: (1d20+5)[16]
Damage: (1d8+5)[11]
If creature falls, recover 4 HP, and move at full speed, 35, towards the caravan, otherwise move 20 ft back

The second arrow pierced its skull, momentarily lifting it into the air before slamming it into the ground, dead.

Getting rid of the creature raised Lenna's spirits. Feeling a somewhat better than before, she set out at full speed towards the caravan.

The 1st day of the trip

Aelia, plays cards and talks to Daisy. You feel you are starting to get an understanding of the game.
Elphas, chats to everyone but gives Eisha a little extra focus. She struggles to accept any compliments and becomes reserved.
Lanius, leads the card game.
Gaider, still unwell. Mostly resting, slowly regaining her strength.
Isah, looking over Gaider.
Professional driver, (Garret) driving.
Eisha, quiet. Eyes Elphas occasionally. Scoured at Aelia once or twice.
Corey, plays a little bit of cards. Pulls out a waterskin full of wine.
Bok, seemed to enjoy making people uncomfortable for a bit with his intimidating presence and sheer bulk taking up space, but quickly grew bored and restless. Moved to the spot above the carriage.
Old Man, watches the card game and helps with the calculations. It’s quickly established that he is very mathematically smart. Beside that he gets stuck into his books.
Daisy, chats cheerfully.

The trip takes longer than expected and night begins to fall without sight of the expected farmstead.
The driver who introduced himself as Garret informs all its just because the roads are not well used and have been harder to travel.
Strange bizarre noises can just be heard rolling over the empty plains, travelling on the wind from far distances.
They are unnerving at the least, just like every swaying shrub or flickering shadow.

”Something es coming fo’ us!” the driver quietly shouts back into the carriage as he points to a shadow nearing fast from a distance outside the reach of his lantern.

Lanius looked up alarmed: "That's no good - wide open terrain, nothing to take shelter and nothing to burn for a large fire. But if that thing can catch up with running horses, we will have a difficult fight. Maybe we can deter it with some burning arrows. Help me up on the roof and then ripp up some cloth and wind it around those arrows. No, don't stop the carriage. As long as it has to concentrate on coming after us, it won't have much ability to attack us directly."

Lanius busied himself with putting his bow into order. After that, he drew forth the lamp oil to soak the cloth on his arrows.

During their earlier travel, Aelia finally far enough removed from the town to feel at ease doing magical things freely (at least in this company of adventurer types who would hopefully view it as helpful rather than have superstitions about it) gathered three strips of leather and with her tools put some magic in them. Specifically light. It wasn't very bright light, but hopefully it would be enough to protect them a little bit from the shadows, or just not stumble around in complete darkness if it came to that.

She kept one for herself, wrapping it around the long sleeve glove on her left arm. Then she handed the other two to Elphas and Lanius saying, "I thought these might help. The light will remain until I remove it. Unfortunately three is my limit at the moment, but I think I'm close to being able to do one or two more. You can just hide them in a pouch or something if having light on you would be an issue."

I used 3 uses of Magical Tinkering to give three leather straps this effect: The object sheds bright light in a 5-foot radius and dim light for an additional 5 feet

Rather than climbing up with Lanius or be the one to help him up, Aelia says, "Good thinking! Ican throw some fire at it too." though she wait to lean out of the side to get an angle until Lanius actually climbs up to the top so she won't be in the way.

Pushing her way through the darkness while still fighting the pain, Lenna saw an arrow fly from the carriage, passing over her head and disappearing in the darkness behind.
For a sliver of a moment her mind wandered towards Faila, and the sense of danger made her shiver, but just as quickly her focus shifted again towards the shadow creatures and the danger ahead.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot! You're riding into a trap!", she shouted at the carriage.

Lanius wasn't sure he had seen and heard right - there was a figure, a humanoid figure moving behind them - it didn't look like the shadows, even though his arrow had illuminated it only for a split second.
The call meanwhile was very distinctively that of another fellow human being. It was a snap decision that he wouldn't have taken at any other time, but Lanius turned back to the driver:
"Slow down, there's a person out there. We can't just leave them to their fate."

The driver was hesitant, but he slowed. Not coming to a complete stop. This new bit of information had the others in the carriage squeezing for a spot where they could sight what was happening out doors. Eisha was brandishing a knife. The old man quickly packed away his books.
Gaider, probably the most experienced fighter in the carriage, was still weak and only semi coherent.

Lenna approached the carriage, limping her way through her last few steps before stopping. She carried her backpack and quiver on her back, and had one hand pressing on the wound on her thigh, which had an improvised bandage made with fabric torn off her own clothing.

"I'm guessing you are riding to the farmhouse straight ahead, aren't you? Not long ago a swarm of shadow creatures glided that way...", Lenna said, hunched over and still recovering her breath

"Now as for safety... at night, in the open like this, how can anyone be safe? I know I almost found my demise, and would have if not for a tree I was lucky to find", said the elf as she straightened her back. "Necroleeches are devilish but luckily they have short legs... how could they climb with those stumpy things?!"

"Now as for those other swarm creatures... they are agile like cats, and they can climb trees with ease, but it seems they were more attracted by whatever lies in the farmhouse ahead than by a mere small elf clinging to a tree, or you would probably not have found me. Whatever we do, don't you think that together we're more likely to stay safe?", Lenna finished her story as she stretched her neck, trying to assess what kind of people she was dealing with.

It was only when Lanius introduced himself and helped Lenna aboard the carriage that she realized she was talking to an elf like her. She hadn't seen one in many, many years, and the unexpected surprised set her back a little.

"House? Oh... I... sorry, Tanglírë, that's my family name, but I haven't seen them in a long time. It's nice to see you. I mean, see another elf. It's been too long."

Climbing up the cart, Lenna straightened her back a bit and patted her clothes, trying to make herself more presentable, with little success: her messy hair and improvised bandages gave away the hard night she'd been having.
Although all hardships aside, Lenna's elvish features and somewhat awkward introduction still had a friendly and peaceful quality of which she wasn't quite aware.

"Oh, and the name is Quelenna, but people just call me Lenna. Nice to meet you", she said while looking around at the others in the carriage, then turned back to Lanius and did a slight bow.

"Nice to meet all of you", Lenna said while discreetly assessing if any of the members of the group looked like magic users. Surviving the night was the main concern here, but uncovering the magical mysteries that had been aiding her was still a persistent thought in her head.

She turned back to Lanius: "are you familiar with house Tanglírë? Do you have any news of them from Rhaegora? I wouldn't recognize our homeland if I were to go back, I was but a child when I sailed away and never went back. Although I would be lying if I said I did not have mostly fond memories", Lenna said with a smile. She then paused a bit, and pondered about Lanius' question regarding the fight ahead.

Lenna did not like the idea of riding towards what seemed to be a losing battle.
On the other hand, she did not know how skillful these travelers were. Maybe they were experts in hunting shadow creatures, she certainly hoped that was the case.
And all things considered, it would still be better to fight alongside others than to be left alone to fend for herself once again.

"If riding into battle is what you desire, you can count on my bow and daggers. I've been fighting these creatures through the night, barely surviving, but I still have a few arrows left."
"We could have an advantage if we can position ourselves on higher ground, but I am not familiar with the surroundings, so I am afraid I can't be of much help in that. Do you folks live in the farmhouse? Do you have any thoughts about what in that place would attract the swarm of shadowcats?"

Before anyone could answer her questions, Lenna continued, now in an unsure and sorrowful tone: "as per my story leading me here, I must admit I am not completely sure myself. All that I know is that by all accounts I should no longer be in this plane of existence, but it would seem something beyond my understanding has brought me here, and apparently, to all of you. And who's to tell why? Magic has never been a prominent part of my life, but it would seem that's not the case anymore..."

So are you a planeswalker - or do you mean that you were dead and brought back? In any case, I think you at least are not one of the shadows out there - you seem to be missing yours."
Lanius replied and wanted to bite his tongue a moment later. 'Great work, Lanius, why don't you comment on her looking dirty and dissheveled as well', he scolded himself mentally.

"Quite fascinating Miss Lenna. Mmm hmm." Aelia sort of mainly says to herself at all the various things to think about questions to ask later of this newcomer. Then remembering herself she adds, "I'm Aelia Smith, nice to meet you. I'm afraid we don't really have a choice about heading to the farmhouse. We've come all the way from Brance and the horses will need rest. Also...... we're all members of the Adventurer's Guild and.... an adventure just landed right in our path. And while I can't speak for anyone else, I'm sure there are people living there and I don't think I'd feel very good about it knowing we left them to get attacked when we could have helped."

As soon as she's done talking though, she basically goes right back to clearly examining Lenna, and then her golden eyes light up as she has an idea. "Ah! Yes, yes, that'll do!" and then a few moments later has prepared another luminous strip of leather and hands it to Lenna. "Only fair it goes to you, since your shadowlessness was the inspiration I needed."

Lenna looked at Lanius, she was curious about Rhaegora, but didn't want to press the matter.
"Oh, the latter, I am no planeswalker. Not that I am aware of, I suppose...."
"Missing my... what?", Lenna looked around herself, unaware of what Lanius was referring to.

Before she could really take in what was going on, she turned to Elphas as his hand began to glow: "oh! Yes, please, if you'd be so kind!", she said as she started to unwrap the bandages around her thigh. The skin around the marks of the creature's teeth had turned dry and dark.

She looked at Elphas: "It's good to be around people... kind people. Thank you!"
Slowly the sting on her thigh began to fade, and Lenna felt much better. She was thinking about who these people were, and how lucky she was to have crossed paths with them. And above everything, they seemed to be competent with magic. Maybe they could help in understanding what was happening with her. But she needed to be careful, she was not ready to open up just yet. What if they thought she was a threat?

Her thoughts were interrupted by Aelia. She smiled and responded: "nice to meet you, Aelia, I mean, Miss Aelia Smith, sorry.", she said, while stretching her arm to reach for the strip of leather.

"This will certainly be useful! I am most thankful, but what do you mean by shadowl...", and then it hit her. As she moved her arm back she noticed it did not cast a shadow on the carriage's flooring. That's what Lanius was talking about! She waved her arm a couple of times in disbelief....

"My shadow! How....?", she felt again a stingy pain on her thigh, and thought about the necroleech draining her energy away from her. Did that beast cause this? Or... could this be another consequence of her dreams and sudden prowess with spells? Was she dying? Becoming a shadow herself? Shadows don't cast shadow, it made sense, or did it?

Lenna slowly moved and sat next to Aelia. Her face was blank, and her gaze fixed on nothing. She was lost in her own thoughts.
After a few seconds she turned to Aelia and said in a quiet voice: "I don't know what this means... you said something about an Adventurer's Guild... what exactly is that? Do you deal with shadowlings? Do you know what's happening to me? Please, help me!"

Without warning the carriage suddenly jerked and the horses whinnied in reply to a crack of the whip, as they were ushered into an exhausting run.
The road, so unused, was not suitable to be travelled upon at these speeds and the carriage creaked and groaned as it bounced violently about.
There was a loud thud as something larger than a man fell off the roof, hitting the dirt hard with a groan before quickly becoming enveloped in the nights darkness as the carriage continued away.
Large overgrown fields took over the landscape along one side while the glow of light from the farmstead could be seen ahead.
The driver said nothing, unable to form words.

Still in shock due to her shadowlessness, Lenna took an extra second to grasp the commotion around her.

When she finally took it all in, Lanius was already running and firing arrows at something, and Aelia stood at the door of the carriage shooting fire bolts. Lenna had seen battles before, but this was her first time seeing actual spells being flung around like that, and she was captivated.

Accentuating the urgency, the driver leapt from his seat and hit the ground hard. The second scarecrow stalked toward him. Similar in fashion to the first only this one had an old scyth blade in place of his right hand and forearm.

The scarecrow changed target right as Lenna attacked him with her torch, swinging its scythe twice in a wide arc, slashing at the elf.
Lenna slightly miscalculates the scythe's arc, and gets slashed on the shoulder, but manages to avoid the second attack.

When she's wounded, she lets out an eerie cry, and her eyes burn with a ghastly light towards the scarecrow, who is engulfed by otherworldly dark purple hellish flames.

Reaction: cast Hellish Rebuke, the scarecrow has to do a Dexterity save with DC 13 or take 2d10 fire damage. Half on a successful save.

Everyone rested up a little and saw to injuries and hungry stomachs. They all also had an opinion on the scarecrows, what it meant and what they should do about it. With no clear leadership things got a little heated until a sound ceased all talking.

Round 10
———————-
The shadowcats on top of the carriage failed to bring blood from Lanius.

Lenna‘s arrows missed the vile creatures at her feet.

Aelia on the other hand found a better angle, blowing the charred remains of one right of the carriage and burning the other.

Lanius quickly dispatched the last one after drawing his rapier, and stood ready to kill the next one to climb up.

Two Cats who were already climbing suddenly showed their faces.
One attacked Lanius and the other Lenna.

Lanius slew the one that came at him.

Meanwhile. Two shadowcats attacked Bok before scurrying on to the carriage and starting their climb as a small group of six more monsters fell upon the duo behind them. Of them, Corey is the main target taking the attacks of 5 as he tries to defend his friend.

Bok was lost to a rage, punching at the nearest Cat and killing it with his bare hands.

Lenna failed miserably to shoot the shadowcats right in front of her, as she was too focused in avoiding their attacks, which she managed to do successfully.
Finnally the swarm could be seen ahead of them, advancing towards her direction. She looked at it in horror, but couldn't waste much time studying the monstrosity, as shadowcats still surrounded her and her new companions.

"You two down there! Fall back!!!" She yelled at Bok and Corey, as they now stood isolated between the shadowcats that had passed them and the swarm.

With that, she continued firing arrows at near point-blank against the shadowcats on the carriage.

———————-
Lanius’s blade ended a Shadow cat and narrowly missed another.

Lenna killed another Cat then put an arrow deep into the carriage roof. Her call to Bok and Corey was heard and most likely saved their lives. Bok struggled to retreat but Corey was there to make sure he did. They took some hits from those around them but moved far faster than the main shadow Cat swarm, staying just ahead as they headed to join Aelia.

Aelia backed away as she injured the cat coming at her, her speed was greater than his but it gave everything it had just to be standing 10ft away from her.

Upon being attacked by one of the shadowcats, Lenna abruptly turned her face towards the creature, her face glowing with sinister expression and features, and hellish flames enveloped the beast.
She barely had any time to think, as the carriage started rocking violently when one of the horses thrashed out of control. It was but for a stroke of luck that the elf managed to shuffle about and stay on her feet, she didn't even want to think of what would happen to her had she fallen.

The sounds of the swarm devouring the other horse were sickening, and Lenna wanted nothing to do with that.

After Lenna’s Hellish Rebuke there was only one SC left on the roof, it clawed at the window until it found a way in.
That’s when Elphas the paladin burst out the carriage door, guided by his faith he roared in the name of his god as he swung his morningstar wildly!
He got in a ferocious hit moments before the swarm retaliated likewise. In less than 10 seconds he was down and reduced to nothing but Shadowling food.

There were screams and sobs from inside the carriage but luckily, Elphas’s corpse was enough of a distraction that they managed to shut and lock the door.

Rounds 15 & 16
Lenna was completely focused on the shadowcats attacking Bok and Corey until the sounds of wild beasts and splintered shields caught her attention back towards the carriage. She's sickened by the sight of the swarm downing Elphas with one single attack.

She instinctively continues moving back, away from the terrifying swarm, and prepares another arrow, now to fire at the dreadful beast who continues to lurk under the carriage.

As she focuses and aims at the swarm a purple spectral aura starts to emanate from her eyes and her wrists. Her hair starts to spike up, and her face starts to shift with monstrous, repulsive features such as fangs and an unnaturally large mouth.

Lenna will continue to move away from the swarm and from the shadowcats who are attacking Bok and Corey, diagonally positioning herself while still staying at most 150ft away from all targets (in range to be able to attack any of them if necessary). She will move on both turns until she reaches the limit of 150ft or the maximum amount of movement she's able to do (35ft per turn).

Her aura and monstrous face are effects of her using her Hexblade Curse feature to curse the swarm, causing her attacks against it to deal 2 extra points of damage, and crit'ing on 19s or 20s. Once (if) it dies she regains 4 hit points.

Round 19 & 20
———————-

With Aelia and Lenna’s fire and arrows the last remaining shadowcats are dispersed from Lanius’s body, a meal they would not get to finish. There were those few that tried to carry on despite mortal wounds but soon death took them, other attempted to limp or crawl away but had no fight left to resist a heavy boot or swinging weapon from the rest of your arriving party. Late but better than never.

The battle with the shadow cats had lasted only a couple of minutes, but they felt like long minutes. The fight had stretched far and wide, the small bodies of many shadowy demons lay scattered out far and wide across the floor. They did not dissipate into the shadows in death like shadowlings, instead remaining to rot. The crippled slow clicking and squealing, now either accompanied by a wheezing or gurgling depending on the injury, was a deformation of the dying shadowcats earlier sounds. It was dull and sporadic, coming from various places where a Cat tried desperately to cling to life. Still, it was haunting.

The following few minutes continued to be hectic as lives still hung in the balance. Emotions were high and many shouts were thrown around in attempted orders and seeking aid. Injuries were assessed and people were sent to and fro the carriage for supplies.

Having no magic left and little supplies. those with knowledge did what they could. Working together, soon Lanius and Corey were stabilised enough for movement.

——————————

The rest of the trip to the farmhouse would be a slow one, the remaining horse was injured and struggled with the carriage alone, not including bodies or supplies. Then there were the unconscious, and the dead. The mood was a mixed one, sorrow for the dead, horror for the tragedy, fear for what could have been and elation for surviving. Many heartfelt gratitudes were sent your way.

Upon the swarm's defeat, Lenna checks on Aelia and Lanius, her appearance now back to normal. She then walks back towards the carriage, to examine the dead creature, and try to retrieve some of her arrows. Through the rest of the trip she remains serious and silent, and along Aelia decides to walk as to not overburden the remaining horse.

In the end nearly every who could, was walking. Or limping at least. The mood that hung over their heads was a somber one. Words failed to be found, be it due to exhaustion, the loss of life or the mental fatigue of their circumstances.

As you approach the farmstead you begin to notice the odd arrow and bolt either broken or stuck into the ground. Beyond the tall stone walls of the travellers inn, a magical light source puts a welcoming soft glow into the sky. However, the barricade of wooden furniture and spiked wood blocking the entrance is far less inviting.

Despite the entrance being barred, it still looks to make the most secure place to rest, with the other buildings looking decrepit and forgotten, not to mention a lot more open and easier for enemies to access. Without words a consensus is reached by the others that this building was far enough and would do, although they leave it up to you to find a way in.

An eerie silence hangs over the ‘Pilgrims Rest.’ You cannot see in beyond the walls and the makeshift blockade, but you can smell the undeniable stench of death permeating from within.

Lanius had awoken in pain. Which, he had to admit, was better than not waking up at all, but still hurt. The makeshift bandage kept the important bits in place, but already smelled horribly. Thirsty, he downed the contents of his waterskin until he found himself strong enough to get up. It hadn't been his first brush with death and likely wouldn't be his last if they didn't find some better shelter soon. A wave of his hand cleaned him and his clothes - including the wound dressing. Another one warmed his clothes enough that he could withstand the general chilliness he felt.
Feeling not unlike a zombie, he started to move to get rid of the onsetting cramping. When they finally reached their destination he frowned:
"Seems like the monsters were already here - and maybe still are. Bones down the road, scratch marks along the perimeter. And considering the climbing skill of those shadow cats, this barricade must have been pretty useless on the whole."

Both at the site of the fight against the swarm and as they arrive at the old farmhouse, Lenna is able to find many arrows that are still in good shape. "Lanius.. I hope you're doing better now. Here, take these, wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have any more need for them?" She says as she gives Lanius 10 arrows. She then turns to Aelia: "I also found these there aren't half bad, but still require some repairing... I noticed how you did some repairs on the carriage earlier, so maybe you can help me with these 4 arrows too? I'd appreciate it."

As they arrive at the farmhouse, she adds to Lanius' remarks: "you are right... there's been a battle here. And there's more, do you notice those tiny mounds around the building? There's about a dozen of them." Lenna says as she approaches one small indent where the sand looks softer, as if it had been dug and then filled back it. She kneels and closely inspects one of them. "They look like the ground has been dug by small creatures in the past couple of days. I wonder what this means. Do you have any experience with these at the Adventurer's Guild?"

It was Isah that spoke reply, her eyes firmly fixed to the barricade. Gaider stood at her side leaning heavily on the beautiful bard.
”No.“ she said flatly. ”We spare no focus for the dirt.“ she added condescendingly. ”and neither should you. Despite those small wretched things climbing skills, their numbers have been reduced, and since we don’t know what else is still out here I believe this is where we should rest.”

Isah was not being helpful, instead waiting impatiently for someone to decide how they were going to get in.

Someone has to climb the barrier. Say, you are a bard - you wouldn't happen to have some curative skills that you could apply on me? I probably can scale the wall, but in my weakened state, I might be of no use should even the least bit go wrong on the other side."

Lanius said with a grim face - both from the pain and a latent anger that threatened to boil over. He wasn't exactly sure who he was angry at. But it didn't help that she had spoken in such a way to someone who he now considered his sibling in arms.

Isah sighed audibly with irritation, her green emerald orbs sharing in the disdain and rolling in her head before turning to land on Lanius. There was a pause as she chose her words, or more likely, chose what not to say.
”Do I look like a healer?” she asked incredulously. ”If you are... of no use... then there is nothing I can do about that, we will simply leave the task for someone else who is more... useful.“

While she never used the word it was heard clearly by all with ears ‘useless.’

Before the matter was done she raised her voice and addressed all.
“Let me remind you that until you have a badge none of you are members of the guild, and just getting there on our resources will not automatically qualify you. Now that that is settled, I do not wish to be addressed again until we have a way in.”

With her final words Isah turned on the spot and took Gaider’s arm and the two vanished into the carriage where Corey still lay.

"Did a shadowling bite her or...?" Lenna mutters to Lanius with a smirk as Isah leaves to the carriage.
"So you are not all part of the Adventurer's Guild, and she is... is that right? Are you like... new recruits or something of that sort?"
"She sure acts like a big deal, imposing all the work on us, doesn't she?"

Lenna turns towards the barricade again, and brings a finger to her mouth, thinking of what they are going to do.

Aelia looks at Lanius quizzically when he suggests burning down the barricade. It's surely not there for no reason and lighting the whole thing on fire could easily wind up getting out of hand. When she realizes nobody else is speaking up she says, "I'll just try climbing it first, before you resort to that kind of thing." As an afterthought she adds, "Can someone give me a boost?"

Climbing the stone fence, the first thing Aelia notices is the scene on the nearby roof which is now at her level. Covered in dry blood, there appears to be a broken chair, a fallen lantern, a sack or two, a forgotten long bow and the tattered remains of clothing that got in between some shadowcats and their meal.

The courtyard shows further evidence of an old battle. However no bodies remain. Blood stains the upturned sand and it’s littered with the odd remains from weapons and armour.
There are a few rope ladders bundled on or hanging off each roof top. You see no signs of movement or trouble. It’s eerily silent.
The wooden staircase that leads to the second level has also been crudely blocked off.

Aelia frowns at the unpleasant, though hardly unexpected, scene for a moment before securing a rope ladder and tossing the other end to the others so they can climb up more easily. In the middle of the grounds anyone looking will see the source of the light. A large stylised piece of timber that once hung welcomingly over the entrance.

The building to the immediate left (beneath the blue x) turns out to be obvious barns, although they haven’t seen a horse in some time. They are straw lined, have pitons in the wall to hang things and hold a horizontally separated wooden double door. (One of those where you can open just the top.)
Inside the second one four large iron boxes sit across 2 sleds. Also to be found is a miners pick.
The first barn door hid 2 small hunting traps on a wall that clearly used to hold more.

You find iron, lots of bars of iron. One of the chests holds an assortment of what you guess to be smithing tools and equipment but it’s mostly a heavy shipment of iron. There is a bit of other unrefined ores scattered over the tops of the bars, one of note a glittering, silvery-black ore.

In no time the thud of feet hitting the sand could be heard behind you as Eisha, Corey and Bok all followed.
It was Eisha who scouted the main tavern area, passing through the broken door. Bok was close behind her with Corey preferring to head back and inform Isah.

A few minutes later and with some tedious team work, the essential supplies were over the wall along with the injured and everyone else.

Eisha, Isah and Gaider volunteered for first watch so everyone else could rest. Isah was constantly looking in the the direction from which you came, waiting for the others to catch up.
Daisy, the driver and the old man offered to take second watch. All wanting to be as helpful as possible. That would see you through to daylight.

The tavern is in a state much like the courtyard, in desperate need of cleaning and repair. Clues and evidence of people camping, fighting and dying are present all around.
But your sleep goes in hindered. You get a full rest.

Lanius had expected to have trouble finding sleep. But as soon as his head had hit the pillow of straw, he was out like a light. Waking up was still painful, but at least he felt refreshed enough to get up and take a look at his injuries. The cuts still hurt, but at least the bleeding had stopped. As long as he kept from moving to quickly, it didn't even hurt too much. After taking a drink from his water skin to get the foul taste out of his mouth, he got up to explore the place a bit that they had spent the night at. He looked especially for a better bow and maybe a shield and armor to replace the tattered leathers he was wearing now.
On his way, he greeted those of his companions that had awoken as well, inviting them to come along.

Since their arrival at the farmhouse, Lenna kept to herself, especially after being scolded by Isah.
Lenna followed Lanius around a bit, quietly, and when most of them went to sleep she looked for a spot in a corner of the old tavern. She finally found one that didn't seem to have any signs of dried blood, broken pieces of glass, or rotten rests of food. She placed her pack against the wall, doffed her battered leather armor, and sat against her pack.

"Finally... this night is over, at last..." she thought before entering into a trance.

[...]

Lenna opened her eyes and found herself alone in a grassy field under the moonlight. The grass was tall, higher than her knee line, and wet with dew. Her hands and her fingers started moving without her consent, her hands centered in front of her navel, meeting one another just by the tips of her thumb and index fingers, forming a triangle.
Her lips moved and quietly let out the words "varnë mordo", and a spectral light in the shape of a triangle appeared in the space between her hands. The light grew until it was large enough to surround her whole body, and then it faded.
She closed her eyes, but she could still see everything around her. She opened and closed them once more, and again, but the moonlit grassy field was always there.

[...]

The sun shone on Lenna's face and she opened her eyes feeling tired, but extremely glad to see a new dawn.
She stood up and started donning her armor again, but noticed it felt strangely uncomfortable, which made her finally begin to understand her dream.

Due to the previous day's physical and emotional toll, Aelia woke up late. For her. Which just means at dawn when the sounds of other people beginning to move around woke her.

She recalled that there were some ores to look at. But more importantly she woke up with the inspiration and ability to perform a new magical smithing technique. First she began infusing her armor with magic, enhancing its protective qualities. Then she called Lenna over, "Can I borrow you bow for a moment? I believe I can, at least for a time, solve your ammunition problem. Though I think it would still be a good idea to collect what arrows you can. I think in the future I might have more pressing needs for this new technique I've discovered."

Initially, she feels a little awkward about it. This bow came to her in a way that still remains to be explained, and now Aelia wants to tinker with it... finally, she realizes there's probably no reason not to, more so, maybe Aelia could help her understand more about the weapon's origins.

"I'm curious to know how you are going to solve it, but you are right, I will take some time to see if I can find arrows or more quivers around the area. It looks like battles were fought here, I'm bound to find something don't you think?"

"I will join you in a bit, after I finish here." Aelia replies to Lanius.

When she was done with it, her armor didn't seem much changed in fact. The differences in the quality would be hard to discern with the naked eye, but one subtle difference is that it seemed to gleam slightly with reflected light...even in shadow.

The enhancements she made to the bow were a bit more noticeable. The wood and the metal and even the string of the bow took on a more golden color an solid line of deep teal to match Lenna's cloak on the inside arches. However the most noticeable feature was when she gave the bow back to Lenna and asked her to attempt to fire it without nocking an arrow. When she did, it conjured an "arrow" that was basically an oversized needle of metal that gleamed teal and gold in the light that vanished a few moments after hitting (or missing) her target.

Lenna nods at Lanius, then watches as Aelia works on the bow.
When she is done, Lenna holds the bow in her hands and turns it to both sides, amazed by Aelia's modifications. But the best part was still coming. Following Aelia's instructions, the elf held the bow with her right arm fully stretched, and pulled the string with her left. She gasped when the magical needle-arrow materialized out of thin air.

"This is... thanks, Aelia."

On the courtyard there were three targets used for archery practice. One of them completely destroyed, with only pieces of the base still in place, the rest in pieces scattered on the ground. The other two had stains of blood and dirt, but were still used, and Lenna practiced the bow's magical arrows two or three times, before going back to Lanius and Aelia.

Once rested and on the move, you find it easy enough to navigate the rope ladders as they are all of sufficient length and located for their purpose.
Reaching the ground first, Aelia takes one damage somehow scratching her leg on a nearby shrub.

The nearby well does not look like it has been used in some time. No rope or bucket to be seen anywhere around it’s edges.

"I've read about them before.... and yes I'd like help and yes I'll also try burning it." Aelia replies and tries to point blank hurl some fire into the shrub attacking her.

As an afterthought she adds, "I am also from Brance."

Fire bolt: [roll0]

Nature to know more about animate plants (of this kind): [roll4]
if a different knowledge check is more appropriate/would also work add +2 to that.

Lanius left the banter and drew his rapier to prune this little uppity scrub.

+6, damage [roll1]+6+[roll]+1d6, if crit +[roll]+1d6

Damn, corrupted my sneak attack

But the small plant proved to be harder to hit than expected.

Burning worked well. Aelia’s fire bolt did the trick, it’s dry little twig branches charring and snapping with the hit.
Lanius’s pruning proved unnecessary as the sentience was already gone from the shrub.

Aelia’s knowledge told her that Daisy would probably know more, but this was not a natural creature, probably a product of the magic Isah had mentioned.

No other shrubbery seems to be coming your way.

"Maybe Daisy would know more about things like that? Do we want to keep searching or check with her first?" Aelia asks Lucius and Lenna.

"Let's keep looking. 'Plants hate fire' is likely the most important information here - and we know that already.
Anyway, someone barricaded themselves in here. Let's walk around the house and see if we can find a different way to get inside. Otherwise we'll have to do it the hard way."
Lanius replied, indicating that he was going to walk counterclockwise around the house.

"Ok." Aelia says and shrugs.

"Like I was saying before I was assaulted by shrubbery, I'm also from Brance. My family runs a smithy and such. But I wanted to see things for myself and Brance is very superstitious about magic. So.... here I am." she says, continuing from where she left off before.

Moving around the building you have opportunity to notice new things.

There are large spiderwebs on the windmill preventing it from turning properly.

Giant wolf spiders (https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/giant-wolf-spider)

There are those small indents in the ground throughout the paddocks, they grow more congregated near the raised ground of the windmill.

There are strange scuff marks circling the building, along the ground and across the walls.

There is a soft sound coming from within the building, a scuffle here and there across floorboards. An odd dull thump.

On the breeze, (travelling west to east) something rotting wafts in the air.

The building itself seems pretty heavily boarded up. Small look out slots are left between planks of wood and arrow slits have been cleverly carved out. Who ever is or was hiding in here appears to have been holed up for a while.

At the northern face of the building you come across the endless flickering flame of an ever burning torch hanging over a beaten door. The door itself is barely on its hinges and through splintered cracks in its upper half you can see the dresser set on the floor barring the base of the door. Bolts protrude out of the wood, having been fired from inside. Char marks indicate a small fire once existed just beyond this portal. Signs of its flickering flames scaring the door through its splintered cracks.

Perception test: [roll0]

"Stop!" Lanius held up his hand with the rapier. "Looks like we have - in addition to everthing else - also a wolf spider infestation around here. I don't like the look of those indentations around the mill and I'm pretty sure I heard something from within the house. These things like to capture their prey alive though. So there might be someone caught in there, soon to be devoured. Get your flame shooter ready. We'll likely face some really ugly big arachnids in a few moments."

He put his shoulder to the backdoor and tried to push it open.
