View Full Version : Bonus action use spells?

I'm having trouble finding whether there are any more of these.

What I mean are spells which may or may not be a bonus action to cast - but which have persistent effects which you can subsequently trigger as a bonus action.

The three I am aware of are:

Melf's Minute Meteors (action to cast, but a bonus action to subsequently launch meteors. Concentration.)
Crown of Stars (action to cast, but a bonus action to make attacks with the motes. Concentration.)
Far Step (bonus action to cast, and bonus action to repeat the effect. Concentration.)

Contributions so far:

Dust Devil
Flame Sphere
Heat Metal
Gust of Wind
Storm Sphere
Unseen Servant
Spiritual Weapon
Animate Dead
Tiny Servants
Aura of vitality
Expeditious Retreat
Hunter's Mark (kind of)
Grasping Vine
Hex (kind of)
Soul Cage
Bigby's Hand
Mordenkainen's Sword
Animate Objects

So a few more that I can think of:

Dust Devil
Flame Sphere
Heat Metal
Gust of Wind
Storm Sphere

Crown of Stars is not concentration.

Unseen Servant.
Spiritual weapon.
Animate Dead and Tiny Servants (you can give them "standing orders", but if you want to always choose what they do each round, you will need to use your Bonus Action to command them)

Call Lightning

I think he's just asking for spells which reactivate on a bonus action.

Aura of vitality is another one, though not many classes get access to it.

Damn, of course, Flaming Sphere. Can't believe I missed that one.

Good catch on Crown of Stars, thanks!

I wouldn't have thought of Animate Dead and Tiny Servants, either.

That's right.

Nice.

Expeditious Retreat

Concentration up to 10 minutes.

Dash as a Bonus Action.

Good catch, I probably wouldn't have thought of that.

Good stuff so far, I'll update the OP.

Dragon’s Breath but it doesn’t use your bonus action every round.

Shadowblade if you use it as a range weapon, you can summon it back as a bonus action every round.

Hunter's Mark
Grasping Vine

Both good though Hunters Mark is more about re-applying it to a new creature than activating the effect. (By the way, I miss different classes having spells at different spell levels as they did in 5e - some spells should be lower level for Rangers than for Druids, for example...)

Hex_______

Similar to Hunter's Mark it's less about triggering the effect, though still applies.

Dragon’s Breath but it doesn’t use your bonus action every round.

Shadowblade if you use it as a range weapon, you can summon it back as a bonus action every round.

Hmm, Dragon's Breath takes an action to use, not a bonus action, and Shadowblade is an attack to use.

Soul Cage (BA to regain HP or give yourself Advantage)

Spiritual Weapon for Clerics
Animate Objects (orders)
Bigby's Hand
Worse Bigby's Hand Mordenkainen's Sword

Good old Spiritual Weapon! And some higher level spells too, good stuff.

You cast Dragon’s Breath on your familiar and or other minions so it costs you no action to use.

Has Misty Step been suggested? I’ve used that quite a bit on my Arcane Trickster.

He's wanting spells with persistent/repeatable effects. Far Step was mentioned, which is the persistent/repeatable version of Misty Step. Misty Step is one and done.
