Its the last day of this year and I don't want to jinx that, but what are people doing to celebrate (as best the term can be said to apply) finally being rid of 2020?

Nothing. I don't want to jinx it. In fact, I probably won't celebrate the new year until like Arbor Day.

Nothing. This year has had some major issues, but there's also stuff there that, for me personally, has made the ear very much worth it.

Thank you 2020. You certainly weren't the best year, but you've had some amazing moments.

Nothing, because 2020 wasn't a fluke; we were sleeping in the bed we made. And frankly, the whole bedroom is still a mess, so I am under no illusions that 2021 will be significantly better.

We're in lockdown with a midnight curfew, so nothing much. Just watching TV and drinking some champagne I guess.
I should have been in Indonesia scuba diving at the moment, but alas, no travel at the moment.

A saying I believe should, going forwards, basically mean "boy that was some bad crap". With whatever string of four letter words you want substituted for crap.

Watching today's news it's obvious 2021 is taking up where 2020 left off.

2020 was the hottest recorded year. By the time humanity goes carbon neutral it will probably be too late.
The rona vaccine is being distributed but the horde of anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists going to be a major problem.

Personally it was a really good year for me personally. One good thing that happened was corporations being forced to accept people working from home when possible, the door to working from home is currently open and I'd like to keep it open even after the pandemic is over.
We made a lot of home improvements, now also moving to a better apartment.
We came up with a really solid recipe for a good ale (basically orange DIPA).

I suspect the trend will continue, bad for everyone else. Good for me.

I dont see any way the problems of 2020 clean up in under a month or two. I'm giving 2021 a grace period- anything during the Chineese Year of the Rat counts as 2020.

I'm pretty sure you used more words than that. Also, not English ones.

Nice Eddie Izzard quote, though.

I actually didn't. Unless I'm already speaking I rarely vocalize my reactions.

British comedian. FFS was basically his catchphrase.

Never heard of him. My knoweldge of British comedians starts with the Monty Pythons and ends with Rowan Atkinson.

I'm almost tempted to just post with 'he had a trombone, and he didn't care', but I think that one's a bit too obscure. And third clarinet plays the notes that are left over!

And the next one I was going to reference I can't hear.

Maybe you should just kill me with a tray

She's actually fairly fluent in French, and has toured France, so you might find her to your liking. She's particularly famous for her "cake or death" bit, as well as her "Do you have a flag?" bit (you should be able to find both on youtube).

Also, I recommend QI as one of the best panel shows in any language, and it has the bonus that you'll become familair with all current British comedians.

(She also came out as trans not that long ago, thus the confusion with her pronouns)

Grey Wolf

I just googled this, and austenitic Eddie is GF and currently living in girl mode, not trans. I'm not sure if they have a preferred pronoun, but they seem wrong to accept both he and she, so I'm going to alternate pronouns when taking about her from now on.

But yeah, there's some of his sketches put to LEGO on YouTube, and she'd likely be right up Fyraltari's street, and honestly I find him funny enough to recommend to people anyway, so if anybody in this thread hasn't seen Eddie Izzard I encourage them to look her up.

Ah yes I have watched some of that on youtube and it was, indeed, very fun. Guess you can add Stephen Fry to my little list.

Duly noted.

Is this about my The Clone Wars reviews? I haven't given up on them, but between the December festivities and my computer committing seppuku I have had a hard time getting back to them. Plus some other stuff I'll talk about when I get back to it in a couple (not contractually binding) of days.

*With some exceptions for classics like Desproges or Devos for the amazing things they could make the French language do.

I can appreciate that - I'm not a fan of most. For example, Jimmy Carr is obviously a very intelligent and educated individual, but his stand up routine is entirely based around jokes that cross the line twice. They are funny, but they are so repetitive they become predictable, and that kills the humour. But as a panelist, he tend to be one of the better ones. (Dara O'Briain's stand-ups are, on the other hand, great start to finish)

So, I suppose my point is that I'm not recommending Izzard's full stand-up routine, just that she has some good bits that you will see referenced by the cultural zeitgeist of today and you probably want to see so you know what all the fuss is about. Speaking of which, the third you probably want to watch is the Death Star Canteen bit. It's maybe 10 minutes of your time all around.

I had not heard that. Thanks for the update.
NP - it wasn't that long ago. I heard about it maybe, two or three days ago? And it's not like they have been slow-news days. It is also, thankfully, becoming an unremarkable event that doesn't make top headlines as the usual suspects froth at the mouth. In many ways it makes me happy that this is slowly becoming non-events that will allow others to follow suit, even if it means a lot of confusion with pronouns on the horizon (one of the reasons I am a proponent of abandoning "he/she" for "they", just as "thou" was abandoned for "you").

I may consider renewing if necessary changes are made expeditiously.

But if you're at it, here (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KyORfuSAa74)'s a list to help you:

Of the chorus:

All the morbleu, all the ventre bleu
The sacrebleu and the cornegidouille
As well, parbleu, as the jarnibleu
And the palsambleu
All the cristi, the ventre-saint-gris
The par ma barbe and the nom d'une pipe
As well, pardi as the sapristi
And the sacristi
Let's not forget the jarnicoton
The scrogneugneu, and the bigre and the bougre
The saperlotte, the cré nom de nom
The peste, et pouah, diantre, fichtre and foutre
All the bon Dieu
All the vertudieu
Tonnerre de Brest and saperlipopette
As well, pardieu as jarnidieu
And pasquedieu

There, now you can sound like a rude Frenchman from the late XIXth century.
