View Full Version : Spells/Magic for Research and Development?

So I was recently inspired by Exalted's First Age and SF, where a great deal of valuable tech was gained because deities literally gave it to people.

In light of this, I have been wondering what spells could be used to research or help with researching new technology, such as advanced guns or advanced materials that could potentially be used to craft SF grade weaponry, armor, and equipment, as it is inevitable that magic would play a role in the development of such items in a setting as rich in magic as Pathfinder.

I can think of Commune, but it is sort of limited in scope (yet invaluable for experiments). Other spells that boost skill checks could count too. I am especially interested, however, in what custom/new spells that could be developed to accomplish these goals, or ways preexisting spells form ALL editions of the game, could be adapted to help in this.

Any information and all your thoughts will be received gladly.

Many spells allow you to gain information about the past, like Legend Lore and such. These are useful for reaching lost information and talking with dead people. Although, if you want true technological advancement, nothing holds a candle to Psionics - more specifically the Seer, a Psion dedicated to Clarisentience.

The level 8 discipline power, Hypercognition, allows you to deduct almost anything that can be achieved through a logical process, given that you have the pieces to join. You're already an Int manifester, and if the information requires an Int check to obtain, you gain a +20 to that check. At the baseline of 20 Int, you're as smart as a 60 Int creature for that specific logical leap - and it gets better as you do. This is pretty much the best ability to justify advanced technology, as it follows a natural process of creation boosted to absurd levels.

A CL 15 Tears to Wine fountain is probably going to do wild things in a Mage Academy or university, giving everyone +10 to all Intelligence and Wisom-based skill checks.

So all Craft, Knowledges and Professions. Pretty damn hefty.

Should also give rise to a hilarious tradition of slightly tipsy magical researchers.

Would you allow for such powers to converted to arcane magic, in a system more like Pathfinder?

3.5 has the spell Scholar's touch which allows you to read any number of books in practically no time at all.
