View Full Version : Optimization Help with Goliath Tempest Cleric

Hey hey!

In the campaign I'm currently playing in, my character's had an increasing number of brushes with death so I figured I'd start planning for a replacement. Our party could really use a magic damage dealer/AoE specialist, and I've played arcane casters so much but never a cleric in 5e. I've wanted to play a Tempest Cleric for a long time, but I've never had an opportunity yet, until now.

The idea I'm looking at is a Goliath (since ours are frost giant-blooded with a viking motif), wielding a spear and generally being all I-come-from-the-land-of-the-ice-and-snow. Mechanically I really just want to fill the niche of being able to take a few hits while dishing out spell damage, with utility as needed etc. If I can actually use my spear, it'd be fantastic, but it's not required. I'm having trouble coming up with interesting ways to build this character though, so I was hoping for some inspiration from the best D&D forum around. I don't need to be incredibly optimized (I'm running Goliath after all!) but divine casters aren't really my forte.

We're 6th level (but close to 7th) and my rolled stats are 16, 14, 14, 12, 11, 8. We don't play with Tasha's lineages, but we do play with Variant Encumbrance rules so STR 15 isn't required for heavy armor. We get a starter feat at level 1, but we're expected to use that feat for something that gives the character an interesting spin, not just optimize with it. Everyone's been very good about that so far.

Any advice would be great! Thank you!
