It is early autumn in the Realms and a group of five strangers travel together for protection on a strange road.

The clouds have obscured the sun which is only a few hours from setting, but everyone is certain they'll reach town before nightfall. A cool breeze blows across the open lands of the Greenfields. Farms and pastures dot the landscape of rolling hills and blue streams, the tall grass swaying along the sides of the dirt road.

Sasha, her hammer at her side and shield strapped to her back, hums a jaunty tune as she walks down the road. She's enjoying the weather, and stops a moment to admire a small patch of flowers to the side. "Hm..." she lets out, debating over whether to pluck one or leave them be.

Velaz too strolled happily down the road with this band of new companions, a bright and nearly care-free smile on his face as his head bobbed to the hummed tune. He didn't even stop for a few steps after Sasha had, but when he did notice the absence of the tune, the tiefling's solid red eyes quickly went to the source. Curious as to what distracted Sasha, Velaz strode over next to her. "Well aren't these pretty. I bet they smell nice too," he added with a joyful grin toward Sasha before bending down to carefully catch a whiff. "Hey, I think we used to have some of these growing around the old temple," he added happily while his tail swished lazily about in the air.

"Good day, friend!" Sasha says, standing to face the man. "They do smell rather entrancing. You said you had ones like this at your temple?" she asks. "My village didn't really have a proper temple-we have a shrine for various deities, but there's not enough folk to merit a full-sized temple. Oh, and I'm Sasha. Sasha Sinclair-it's nice to meet you!"

Arioch considered it a curious twist of fate that he was accompanied by these strangers on the journey towards Greenest. Velaz, the scholar, was servant to one of the landed Knights who had attended the gala being thrown at the manor when the dragon attacked. It was due to the tiefling's connection to unnamed powers, that he had been able to mend his shattered vessel after the wyrm's attack shattered the tower that the young baron had been ascending.

In the weeks that followed, Arioch discovered that the acolyte had information regarding some sort of cult that revered dragon kind, and given his disposition the two of them travelled to Greenest, for reasons of their own, their goals, for the time being, aligning. In the interim they found themselves accompanied by other travellers on the road, while it wasn't unheard of, the fact that they seemed, both, well armed and armored was curious. He smiled as the inquisitive acolyte approached their companion, a woman with shield and hammer, who quickly introduced themselves.

He strode towards the flower patch that had distracted their companion, "Lady Sinclair," he fell back on the courtly etiquette instilled in him by his mother, "I am Arioch of Tar Valon, a barony of Iriaebor. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." As he spoke, he bowed with a courtly grace, before rising again to his full height, "We are less than a day out from Greenest, do you, too, have business within the region?"

OOC: A knowledge History would likely reveal that Iriaebor is a large trade city in the Western Heartlands, a number of outlying baronies protecting it from the dangers of the Heartland, Tar Valon being one of them. Also, does Sasha have any heraldry on her armor or shield that indicate fealty to a lord, or kingdom?

Doc let a small, sardonic smile play across his lips as he watched his... compatriots? Comrades? Eh, let's go with companions chat on the road with the armed stranger. Good of her, travelling was dangerous at the best of times. Watching Velaz begin to discuss of all things, the young man rolled his eyes and moved to introduce himself.

"Good day, madam. As my companions have given you their names, it would be the height of social discourtesies to not offer mine as well. I am called Docavius Holliday, but please, call me Doc." He said, the smile on his face turning into a sardonic smirk as he held his hand out to the lady. If she offered her hand, he will kiss the back of her knuckles like a proper gentleman. "What, per chance, has led to such a vision of loveliness to cross our paths this day?"

To the casual viewer, Doc looks like a rather well dressed young half-elf with a few pieces of leather armor on. He has a wide brimmed hat keeping the sun out of his eyes, and the only weapons that aren't hidden by his cloak are a rapier at his hip and a short bow that is on his back.

OOC: And yes, every world of of Doc's mouth sounds vaguely sarcastic, much like he's in on some big joke that only he knows. For any of you who have watched Tombstone, I am 100% basing my cover personality on Doc Holiday.

"Official business? No, none-and please, just Sasha will do," she replies. "But there's a time in a young woman's life when you have to leave the nest, spread your wings, and learn to fly. My mother has kept me sheltered all my life-not in a bad way, certainly!-but I have to forge my own path now."

Sasha's armor and other gear are plain, without any symbols or heraldry. She stands tall, right about six and a half feet, and unlike many of elven heritage, is rather muscular. Her face is bright and unbothered, with a broad smile and innocent eyes.

When she turns to face Doc, she takes his hand and blushes deeply when he gives her knuckles a smooch. "Oh! I, um, er..." she stammers out, before taking a deep breath and steadying herself. "Good fortune, it would seem, is why we've crossed paths. Tell me-what business have you all in Greenest? Or is it merely a stop along the way?"

Narunir lets out a soft sigh of relief as the sun is obscured by the clouds. Even after having spent decades on the surface, he still isn't completely used to the discomfort the sun causes. Using his staff as a cane, the Drow ambles peaceably along looking for all the world like he doesn't have a care. He listens in on his newfound companions though, and speaks up as he wills.

"Leaving the nest hm? I know a bit about that," he comments, turning to look at Sasha with a curious expression, "My mother was rather the same way with my own sister and I. Eventually we simply had to say that enough was enough and packed our bags to leave." Narunir gives a grimace at the memory, "She was not thrilled, to put it mildly."

"Regardless, Narunir Cadarn at your service. Late of Luskan, and currently on my way to Greenest, same as you all. As for the reason why..." He trails off, musing as to just how much he should say, "Well, a debt must be paid, and it is Greenest where I must go to do so."

Nodding and smiling, Sasha offers her hand to the dark elf. "Well, we shouldn't dally, then. Onward, to Greenest! I'm excited-first time I'm ever gonna be to a big city! Is Greenest considered big? I don't really know, but still!"

"OH! And I'm Velaz," the tiefling happily announced jumping back to his feet with a ruffle of his folded wings when he saw that others were going through their introductions. He tried to mimic Arioch's bow, though it didn't have the practiced grace or timing. Afterwards, he also tried to mimic the exchange Sasha had with Doc, holding his hand out happily towards Doc and waiting for it to be taken, but letting it drop to his side when the new question was asked. "I'm looking for my best friend Talis. You haven't seen her, have you?" The forced calm barely hiding the concern in this question was a far cry from his prior demeanor.

"She's a half elf from my village with short brown hair and green eyes, but they're normal like yours. She'd been in Arioch's town when the dragon attacked, but when I asked about her the people there told me some dragon cult took her earlier. You haven't seen any of them either, have you?" The questions were more to everyone even though they were in reply to Sasha's question, his red eyes hopefully searching each of their respective faces.

The group continues its journey as the sky starts to turn a light pink and purple in the west. Suddenly a flash of white flutters across the western skyline...

The light was something akin to heat lightning, but the clouds don't seem to fit a storm brewing.

...a few seconds later a low rumble, like muffled thunder, reaches the party.

Doc shrugged, more than a bit amused by Velaz. He offered his hand to the friendly tiefling, and after it was shaken, nodded to the cloaked Drow.

"Tis a wonderful thing, experiencing the world. I left home early on, and have been doing my best to enjoy life. In fact, I am also looking for a couple members of the dragon cult. I over heard Velaz mention them, and decided to head this way as well." Doc's smirk fell a bit. "A couple of them decided to take a gamble against me, and now I must find them to get my due. That lot is a bit, hmm, how do you say, tetchy? About outsiders messing with their members, so I figured I'd see if my quarry is with Velaz' friend."

Doc groaned softly as he stretched, letting a kink in his shoulder loosen. He gazed out over the hilly terrain, just in time to see the flash of light and hear the thunder. Frowning slightly, he answered Sasha, "No. That's not normal at all." He said grimly, moving his cloak back from his rapier and pulling his shortbow into his hand.

OOC: Doc is readying his weapons just in case the strange light is a herald of Bad Things. He doesn't have an arrow nocked yet, though.

At hearing another person state they didn't know anything about his missing friend, Velaz's mood deflated further, though the proclamation that she'd help find her had him tilting his head up questioningly. He was about to ask if she really meant it when the flash surprised him. The tiefling's wings reflexively inched around his shoulders while his tail curled slightly around one of his legs as the rumbling approached. What was that?" He asked aloud and confused, not recognizing it at all and wildly looking around for where it may have come from. Even with knees shaking though, Velaz kept standing where he was with hands outstretched and ready to cast a spell if needed.

Narunir almost freezes at the mention of a dragon cult. After all, what are the odds that he's ended up traveling with at least a couple people who are investigating his very area of study? Still, he does his best to continue on as though nothing is the matter, which brings his attention to the lightning that's on the horizon. "No..." he begins, his hair starting to stand on end as he watches the bolts streak across the sky, "That doesn't look natural at all. Perhaps the storm that's brewing is more metaphorical than literal..." Despite his attempt at levity the Drow doesn't like this at all; something about this situation is really setting his teeth on edge.

An unnatural chill ran up the young noble's spine as he watched the gathering storm, it seemed wholly unnatural to him. However, he was not one to work the fields, and not particularly attuned to the changes of weather, or the coming of storms, still ...

He shook his head at Sasha, "Not weird at all m'lady." He paused, scanning the clouds, "Regardless, we do not wish to be caught in a downpour, let us make haste." Even as he spoke, he noted Velaz's dour spirits, he placed a hand on the tiefling's shoulder, "You know that I've pledged to track down Talis if at all possible, my friend. We will find her, you have my word."

The phenomenon doesn't recur as the group continues on. The sun is deep below the surrounding hills horizon as the group hears the first ear piercing roar. Its sounding off the hillsides does not give anyone a good ideal of its direction. But the wails and screams that follow could only becoming from the direction of Greenest.

The people are in trouble.

I think everyone is on board and ready to start. Only Doc has a weapon at the ready, so I thought maybe I'd give everyone a last chance to cast/ready a weapon, although I don't think anyone has the mage armor spell. Let me know what prep your characters are up to, Thanks.

As the roar echoed through the sky, a chill ran down the young baron's spine. Visions of the shattered tower, is sisters scream, and the incincerating heat of dragon's breath all roiled through his head, fear and hatred fought for control of his heart as it began pounding. When Velaz finally realizes that whatever it was wasn't happening again, his wings would shift and extend out for a second before folding and settling on his back while the tail released his leg. The Reassurances and promises to help him find Talis even managed to bring back the tiefling's smile, before it was stolen away again, this time by the roar and screams that had his wings fully extended. Right in step with Sasha and Arioch, Velaz would take off at a sprint towards the town without a weapon drawn.

Doc flinched when he heard the roar, and blanched heavily when he heard one of his companions identify it as a dragon. He was about to tell everyone to hide until he realized Miss Sasha was charging towards the town, followed by a couple of the others. Groaning under his breath, He followed, finally nocking an arrow, but hanging back about 20 feet behind the others. These people, especially Velaz and Arioch, offered the best chance for him to claim his long awaited vengeance, and he couldn't just throw it away.

"Blast you all for fools! What kind of addle-brained morons run towards a dragon?!" He snarled under his breath, not wanting his fellows to hear him.

As the group moved forward, he kept his head on a swivel, looking for threats and planning to shoot anyone trying to kill his traveling companions.

For the past several hours, your party has been traveling a road that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. Sundown is upon you when they top a rise and see the town of Greenest just a short mile away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from burning buildings, and running figures that are little more than dots in the distance, along with a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of town. Greenest is being attacked by a dragon!

http://www.koboldpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Dragon-Attack.jpg

" Unless, Velaz, you are hiding some amazing magical power from us all, or one of the others is, I don't think there is a way to fight this beast." Doc's voice was grim, and subdued. "I know that I do not have the ability to bring actual harm to this dragon. I have no learning in magic, and I only have 20 arrows. As heartless as it may sound to you, I think the safest thing we could do would be to stay hidden until the dragon grows bored and leaves. Then we can go try to help any survivors."

After watching more destruction for a moment, Doc closed his eyes into a wince and looked away. "I'm sorry. I do wish there was some decision we could make, but we are just five travelers. Our odds of surviving an encounter with a dragon of that size are basically 0."

Arioch glared at Doc, anger and disgust, in equal measure, contained in that gaze, "Noody is forcing you to risk your hide for the people of Greenest," he looked to the Lady Sinclair, and his companion, Valez, before focusing back on Doc, "Greenest is rules by a governor appointed by a council of Greenfield's lords, the governor will maintain a keep." He squinted his eyes surveyin the town as they approached. "THERE!" He pointed to the walled structure at the center of town, "If any aid is to be had, it is there." His hand moved through the air, pointing towards wood and plaster buildings that had caught aflame from the great dragon's terrifying lightning-charged breath.

"There are people in those fires, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and children. I mean to aid them in making the keep, their best hope to survive the dragon's onslaught."

"But the dragon isn't slaughtering anyone," Narunir comments from the dark shadows of sundown. And as the group looks on they see that the drow is correct. It slowly makes two long sweeps around the keep barely flapping its wings as it circles above the burning buildings. "Its using the heat and updrafts. It almost looks... lazy."

The sun is finally all the way down, but the group can still see people (and families) fleeing up the road in their direction. The drow places a dark hand on his chin lost in thought. "And I wander how those fires started, that type of dragon isn't know to breath fire."

Staff in hand the wizard starts to follow the others although his eyes never stray far from the wheeling beast.

As the group steps off the road to let a group of four farmfolk by, the dragon lets out a roar, but seems to be quite happy just circling the town.

From the road it is hard to see in the dark. But near the burning builds the group can see armed men running in small groups, before disappearing out of sight. "They came out of the south. A mass of bandits in black leathers with weapons drawn." Naya starts her story. "A crier came out of the keep callin' the milita men to take up arms and form up. I saw Lord Nighthill charge out of the keep me self. Rousing the men and joining them astride his horse. They were all standing fast as them evil men screamed and ran towards them. None looked to the sky." She bows her head sadly. A shiver runs through her body as she remembers. "Then a great bolt of lightning struck through the ranks of the men. It was so bright. A white flash that, made me look away it was so bright." The old man pats her hand gently. "It was the cheering what made me look back. The bandits reached the men who had the toughest time of it fighting and retreating fighting and scattering as the dragon flew over them."

She looks back to the town then down at the old farmer holding her hand,"We have to go," she suddenly stammers. "They'll kill us all. We need to run!" Naya's eyes are wide as she casts about looking like a scared child needing a place to hide.

Despite his urgency, Velaz lingered to at least overhear some of what those already fleeing the town were saying, but he didn't stay for all of the exposition. Velaz instead ran onward towards the west side of town, looking about the burning buildings for any signs of survivors when he got there. He was also keeping his head up and looking for these black leather bound attackers. He tried not to look at the dragon much, keeping his mind on the task at hand.

"I'm in favor of any plan that puts solid stone walls between us and that dragon," Narunir comments, before looking to Doc. "Dog men...Could be kobolds; I've read that they have a tendency to work for dragons. Some even worship them as gods!" Looking at the destruction around them, he has to admit that to the uneducated the difference between a dragon and a god might not be readily apparent.

"Regardless, I'm in agreement. Let's get moving."

Following Naya's directions, Arioch led the group from building to building, pausing at each to call out in a hoarse stage whisper, "We're allies, come to Greenest's defense, we move to Nighthill's keep, come, gather!" Before moving on to the next structure, trying to both identify the group, so straglers did not hide from them as though they were with the raiders.

However, upon seeing Velaz begin to seperate from the group, he curses, "VELAZ! NO! We can't be sure there are survivors in those flames and if you die, who then, will protect those we find here! Concentrate our efforts on the greater good. Stay with us, and I pledge to you, once we have these folks in the safety of the keep I we will venture forth to find as many as we can."

OOC: Arioch does not want to split up, however he is no going to stop Velaz if he chooses to go the opposite way, and will continue towards the keep. He's not exatly hiding, but is trying to identify himself to any survivors while keeping the group moving forward. The town is aglow in the dark night. As the group approaches they notice families giving them a wide breath as they pass, most ignoring Airoch's hail to follow them to the keep. When the group reaches the first of the outlying buildings they all notice Velaz is missing. But before they can go looking for the teifling...

Without warning, four humans dash out from between two buildings on your left. A limping man, carrying a child wrapped in a blanket, followed closely by two young children race to the shadows of a nearby home. They are followed by a woman, carrying a round shield and a broken spear who turns and faces in the direction from which they just came. Eight yipping kobolds stream out of the alley on the family's heels and fan out around the woman, who looks determined to delay the creatures for as long as possible.

Velaz doesn't hear the call of his name, as he moves west of the group to begin searching the already burning side. He raises a sleeve to his face to fight off some of the smoke as he approaches the first building that isn't completely up in flames. Velaz rushes up to one of the windows and peers inside and then another to see if he can see anyone or any flames. Then taking a few steps back he'll cast prestidigitation on the door to try and open if it's unlocked. If it is, Velaz'll run up to the open entrance and call out "Anyone in here?". If he doesn't see anyone through the windows and the door is either locked or nobody answers his call through the open door, Velaz will move on to the next not too badly burning building.

Watching the watchwoman defend her family reminded the young noble of the cost of this raid, and the desperation of Greenest's survivors. However, as a sling stone split her scalp, Arioch was incensed. He then turned to the woman's attackers, "VERMIN! FLEE OR THESE STREETS WILL RUN SLICK WITH YOUR BLOOD!"

With the boy safe enough for the moment from the immediate dangers, Velaz was ready to rush back into town when he saw the flare shoot across the sky missing it's intended target. Questions flooded his mind as Velaz wasn't sure if this was an attempt to start a new fire, a cry for help, or the signs of a fight breaking out. The notion of other possible hostiles though finally started to sink in as Velaz had been too concerned with trying to save people in the burning section of town to give it much thought before. Now though he was forced to recall that he was never much of a fighter, Talis was the one who'd gotten them out of such scrapes before and he'd tended her cuts and bruises afterwards.

And now, the people who'd agreed to help find Talis could be fighting without him. That would prove more than enough for Velaz to take off at a sprint across the field back towards the side of town where the others would have entered it, cutting through the town even if it'd get him there any faster.

"Arioch I'm sorry, please tell me I wasn't too late,"

Arioch coughed, a bitter smile on his face, "Y-you," a sputter, "do not blame yourself," he said weakly, "you sought to help others." A nod of respect, "I, least of all, could fault you for following your heart." He steadied himself with a hand on his companions shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze as he turned to the rest of the group, "Are there other injuries among us?" He poignantly looked at the woman, "Your family?"

As inquiries were made of the kobold, "Tie him, bring him to the keep, the Lord may wish to question him, perhaps we will find the truth of this." As he spoke, he produced a length of solid hemp rope from his backpack.

OOC: Arioch will want to take point, but he knows he's injured so if Sasha is healthier at the moment, he'd relent to being second, and behind her. I also have 5 HP's worth of healing if someone needs, Arioch would resolutely refuse to heal himself, he'd put others first. However, I do feel as though we should just make for the keep, and heal there in relative safety. Maybe a short rest?

"Are there other injuries among us?" He poignantly looked at the woman, "Your family?"

As inquiries were made of the kobold, "Tie him, bring him to the keep, the Lord may wish to question him, perhaps we will find the truth of this." As he spoke, he produced a length of solid hemp rope from his backpack.

"Their fine." the woman says as a small curious face pokes out from the shadows of the building. "Hins, bring them. We are making for the keep." The older man holding a young girl in his arms cautiously steps out to the edge of the grease. Two other children huddle behind him. Dirk steps forward watching Airoch gather his rope. "I'll take the end of the rope. You and the others will need to keep your hands free. Naya, you help with the children." Naya nods and scurries up smiling and making soothing noises as she helps gather up the young ones.

As Airoch and Dirk tie up the kobold, Doc watches the dark alley across the road his bow drawn.

Velaz nods at Arioch's assurances, but it does little to change the already present guilt or relief still at war for room on his face. "Then to the keep we'll head," Velaz echoes as he settles to follow behind Arioch. The healing he had provided hadn't been much, and Velaz knew it so he knew he had to be close in case more was needed. That didn't however do much for his nerves as the dragon continued to fly overhead. Now that his mind wasn't so fixated on saving the immediately in trouble, his nerves and fear returned in full force. "Oh, that's right. I did find someone, got them out of town but if we can, I'd want to check on him later."

"To the keep then," Narunir agrees, casting a careful look around for any more kobolds, "If nothing else, it can't be worse than being out here!"

Doc nodded, and put away the arrows he had managed to reclaim. "Agreed, let's get the hells out of here. If you want to get to the fort let's go."

"Keep to the alley's and backways," he watched the sky to see if the dragon had returned, "anything between us and eyes in the sky is a good thing." His sword and shield were drawn, despite his wounds, his teeth were clenched to fight the pain. "And watch for more survivors and patrols, we need to get the villagers to the safety of the keep."

He moved forward cautiously, allowing Sasha to take the lead, but following her ready to protect her flank, "Move, move, move."

With the sun finally fully down below the horizon the shadows of the buildings give the group great cover to advance towards the keep. Moving away from the main streets they duck through narrow alleys between shops and homes.

As they advance the dragon keeps its vigil circling the lone keep on the hill. In the darkness you can't see the arrows fired from the ramparts, but the jerky motions and roar of the blue dragon let you know that they are there.

Making good time, although Naya with the children, and Dirk with the prisoner all fall to the rear, The gate to the keep appears just a few hundred feet away. The problem comes from the area being open up-hill space. As you gather togther to plan out your next move...

... suddenly a backdoor to a shop is kicked open and an odd sight emerges. A squat scaled kobold huffs as he walks forward, carrying a large burlap sack. So full and heavy are its contents that the creature can't see over it. It moves a few quick steps before reaching the opposite building and leaning its burden against it to help keep it off the ground. Then two more kobolds reach the open doorway each carrying a large sack, just not as full.

"ACK!" "Ambush!" one yells out in draconic.

Velaz had been following along with the group quietly, his head down from a mix of embarrassment and shame despite Arioch's request to not blame himself for what had nearly happened. As such, he barely even noticed the door being kicked open, but the stared wide eyed as the kobolds slowly filed out of the building. When they yelled out in surprise, Velaz joined the cry but he followed it up with the first spell he could think of looking at the kobolds. With more golden motes of light swirling about Velaz's hand, he stepped forward and tried to slap Arioch's shield while casting his spell. "In the blessed light of Ilmater, stop!" Velaz yelled at the kobolds as his friend's shield starts glowing brightly if the spell isn't avoided.

Casting light on Arioch's shield and hoping that at least the kobold's sunlight sensitivity will come into effect, though if it actually blinded them for a moment, that'd be great too.

Narunir blinks in surprise as a door in front of them is pushed open, a trio of kobolds stumbling out. The only good thing about it was that the kobolds seemed to be as surprised as they were, though he doubted that would last for long. And so the Drow quickly shot a bolt of flame at the furthest of them, hoping to put them down so that they could continue on their way.

Arioch was still wounded from the encounter on the initial patrol of vermin, still, there was only one way he knew to approach a situation such as this, and that was with boldness, and fortitude. As such he charged forward to the raider's line, his, now glowing shield, held aloft and brandishing his sword. "Surrender vermin!" He bellowed, as he moved into position, blocking their advance, and holding the line for his companions.

OOC: Moving from I5 to H6, and taking the Dodge action so all attackers are at Disadvantage to hit me. However if they move past me they will get an AoO.

Sasha readies her weapon, but focuses more on the tactics of the situation. She says "Eyes up, on guard," to Arioch.

Using an Action and a Bonus Action to grant a d6 die to Arioch, and our spear-wielding guide. They can use this for damage rolls or as a reaction to add to AC.
