What would be the XP cost of an automatically resetting boon trap designed to include a spell with an XP cost? 50 times the normal xp cost? Working on stronghold plans for a character, and wanted to have a trap of https://web.archive.org/web/20140604200243/http://wizards.com:80/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20011020a to be able to apply templates to friends/followers/cohorts familiar and animal companions. (The cost probably won't be worth it in the long run and ill go with making potions or scrolls instead, but just exploring my options)

Are you using 3.5?

I find it hilarious that the spell requires you to have a companion creature but it targets ANY living creature

I'm using 3.5. Its also interesting that its a cleric spell and clerics Normally don't have companion creatures. (I had planned on circumventing this)

See here (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/traps.htm#magicDeviceTrapCost). Curiously, it turns into a gold cost. 500 GP per XP the spell in question would cost. Works out to about 100 times the XP component, if you go by the standard 1 xp = 5 gp conversion.... the cost is in gold, not XP.

That's market value, not crafting costs, hence why it's x500gp, and not x100xp. The reason it's x100 and not x50 can be found straight in the DMG's crafting guidelines, subnote 5: "If item is continuous or unlimited, not charged, determine cost as if it had 100 charges. If it has some daily limit, determine as if it had 50 charges."

Look at the "Each spell used in trap" entry. Those are absolutely crafting costs, not market costs.

Huh, seems you're right. Certainly creates a strange situation in that regard.

You mean like a few one-shot traps of Wish costing you a lot less levels than a single casting of Wish? Yep.
