View Full Version : Hell's Vengeance part 1 [The Hellfire Compact]

It is a warm summer night. The town of Longacre sits just outside the fringes of the Whisperwood. A few lights shine in the streets and windows, and the occasional snippet of conversation or laughter issues from open doors, but here on the outskirts of town, the night is quiet and dark. Sparse clouds scud across the sky, momentarily obscuring the dim light from the moon overhead. Across a scrubby field, barely distinguishable under the starry sky, a darkened, fortlike compound hunches in the distance.

Cimri points toward the dim structure. She is young woman with short, dark hair, dressed in leather armor and carrying a few more knives than a person has hands to stab with.
“That’s it—Louslik Tannery. Here’s the job: We break in, sack Ol’ Louslik’s office, take whatever’s shiny, and get out before the sheriff shows up. If we get separated, meet back at the Ash House by dawn.”

Dull moonlight glints across her dagger as she flicks it in emphasis. “If you get pinched, remember: you’re mute. Keep your mouth shut, and I’ll handle things. I got assurances that we won’t take any blame if things go south. But get chatty and I’ll let you rot.” A beat passes and her usual crooked smirk appears. “If you don’t screw things up, we’ll all be drinking on Razelago’s coin come dawn. Let’s do this.”

You've joined up at the hill overlooking the Louslik Tannery and the fields surrounding it, off the road. Some distance South of Longacre, enough that any help should find all of you long gone.

Jagan hung back, the deep cloak pulled up high shadowing most of his face but the bow on his back and the pair of blades (one long and one short) at his waist suggest he is a warrior. With a thin face and lean frame he moves easily and cautiously as he nods at Cimri's words. "Aye, straight in, loot, get out." he nods and then slowly follows here trying to keep low, the bow handy and an arrow nocked.

He glanced at his companions making sure to flank out wide to right to keep any escape options open to him.

Sarina wasn't quite sure why she was here, and how's she'd fallen into becoming a scoundrel doing breaking and entering. But it was a starting point. It looked like a good crew, at least a few of them looked at home at this sort of thing. She straightened her pose, and rested her hand on the blade with a bit of slack, the way she'd been taught she was supposed to do to inspire courage in her underlings, but in truth it was more effective to hide her own insecurities. She'd even drawn some charcoal across her face, the way she assumed cutthroats and burglars did.

She wasn't amused at the apparent lack of planning, but perhaps this was an opportunity, and you were supposed to make the most of them. "The Ovicii don't snitch." She stated simply. She could feel whatever was lurking inside her blooming up, but she suppressed it - she had best preserve her power. Looking to Jagan and Gull, who beyond Cimri, seemed like the most experienced in these sort of deals she gave them a nod, indicating that she'd follow whatever plan they concocted.

Talmar (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2389193) was not unused to doing odd jobs for people, after all his mother had always taught him to respect the other nobles and to sit and listen for you often learned more when you simply seemed to agree with someone. However his fathers strict teachings of the law and not breaking it were one of the things both his parents always agreed upon, so when he was asked by Lazzero to help Cimri with a task he expected it to fall into the lines of the law, however as he heard the job the man grew uneasy. It was bad enough the man couldn't see anything to save his life and had to rely on his Eidolon to guide him to find their meeting spot, but breaking and entering simply to steal from someone who was a member of his country simply wasn't right.

Seeing no one else had any qualms with this job he spoke up, "Cimri I was under the impression helping you would be doing a service to the empire and thus my family, how does stealing from some tanner do any of these things? Better yet why are we stealing from him? Who is this Razelago you speak of as well?" Talmar asks, making it known he would not simply do something because he was told to, he was a leader, and would one day command armies of devils, he could not show weakness even now and simply follow commands from a nobody in his eyes.

By the noble's side, though slightly behind him stood a large red skinned figure that was clearly not of this world. It's claws looked more like shortswords how large they were, and the wicked looking Glaive-Guisarme in its hands made it clear that it was no simple advisor from the lower planes either.

The half-elf grins at Cassidy as she extends a hand. "I'm grateful already." She winks.

"Call me Gull. What do I call you Clonky?" After shaking Cassidy's hand, Gull turns around to the rest. "How about the rest of you? Have you got names? And what in the hells is that thing? That's definitely going to draw attention," she says, pointing at Talmar's eidolon.

"That's right" Cimri nods to Jagan. "People should've gone home for the night."

She turns to Gull. "Not just the loot either. It's a job. Just a little left of the law kind of job. But also the kind with pay."

Talmar's words prompt her to narrow her eyes a little before her grin returns. "See here, Talmar, we are doing a service to the Empire. You see. ol' Louslik's not been paying his dues. Or so our man says. He just needs proof. We're here to get that." she tells the noble. "And also everything that ain't nailed down for ourselves. No need letting all that go to waste, right?" she adds for the benefit of others.

The tannery is surrounded by a low wall, hardly insurmountable. There's a gate fit for a wagon on one side, and a little break in the wooden wall around it, though that would be a tight squeeze. The yard space is lit with lamps, but they see nothing disturb that movement.

"Any more questions before we close in?" Cimri asks.

Talmar listens to Cimri as she explains that they were doing this because the man wasn't paying his taxes and nods in understanding. It meant they were showing him that his taxes paid for the protection his business was used to, and thus by stealing from it one could get the taxes back as well as remind the owner what happens when they didn't pay.

As the half-elf points at his ediolon Talmar simply smiles. "His name is Lithroneus, and a devil I have a contract with. He is loyal and won't betray us. If your worried about him being recognized don't, he rarely is out in the open like this unless there must be a show of force." the noble explains, hoping to put his compatriots at ease. "As for myself, you may call me Talmar. Depending on the success of our job and if we are to work together again I may share the rest of my name, however see little point at this time. More easy to make a mistake and call out a persons name while the job is going on." the noble explains

Talmar was unsure how he felt about his companion Jagan and his ease at saying very clearly he would kill for coin. Killing in self defense was one thing, stopping a criminal from breaking the law even was understandable, but simply killing because someone paid you to was a bit worrysome to the noble as it meant he could not fully trust the man to have his back. After all this was Chelix and paying someone to murder a noble was not unheard of. He would have to make a mental note to have his edilon always keep an eye on the man while he himself was sleeping.

"I would advise going the least obvious route. No doubt the gate is the easiest way in, however probally locked up for the night as well as whatever kind of defense they have in place to make sure no one robs the place would be at the front gate. We should look around the perimeter first to see if their is perhaps another way in before going through the front door. At least that is what I plan to do." he says before he and Lithroneus begin looking for any other ways inside the complex.

Sarina stares at Gull briefly and nods solemnly as if in agreement. Then the facade breaks and she beams a smile. "How intolerably rude of me. I am Sarina Ovica." She states while making a simple curtsy, and making sure not to raise her voice to much when presenting herself. They were acting covertly after all. "But Silent will do fine." It was a bit saddening to hear that her reputation didn't precede her, but in the midst of an operation of skullduggery, it might be for the best.

"I wouldn't say upstanding citizen Gull, more I fully believe in the law and what our country represents. I have no problems bending the law to see that it is done, as like many things it is flawed and one must look at the situation to see if the law was meant to work another way at times. For example tax money pays for our soldiers, roads, and many other important things along the empire. Someone not paying their taxes should indeed be reminded of why they pay their taxes. Stealing from them, while I would consider below my skills to recoup the taxes they owe, as well as remind them why they pay taxes is perfectly legal from my point of view." he explains rationally.

"Ovica, as in the house that died during the civil war, well after the civil war? If so it is an honor to meet you. My father always spoke of the fine leaders trained by your house back before the war. It's nice to see some still live if the war stories I hear are true." Talmar says with a small bow of his head, showing her the proper respect that was due, but no more.

"...That said, I think we're one short"

We'll wait for Zhentarim at this point, since it seems like the most logical time for his character to appear.

Meanwhile, if you want to get some checks out of the way, it takes a Climb check to scale the palisade wall, an Escape Artist Check to squeeze through the gap, and either Disable Device, Str check or Sundering to go through the gate from the outside.

In any approach, you may elect to be stealthy about it.

Names Talmar, and the big guy is Lithroneus." he says pointing to the devil with claws, each the size of a greatsword.

"If you can climb I would come with us after you tie your horse up somewhere, otherwise be ready to ride in the front gate once we are inside, should be easy enough to tell when the gate opens." he explains pointing to where the main gate was located compared to all of them getting ready to go climb the wall.

The group approaches the tannery. In addition to the palisade itself, two buildings are set into the wall itself, but neither has outward-facing windows. The group makes their approach from the North, the side with one of the buildings, as well as the gap in the palisade wall. There's a terrible stench emanating from the yard within. The palisade proves tricky, with only Gull and Cimri clearing it on their first try. The inside is much worse in terms of stench. The horses refuse to try clearing the 10 foot tall palisade

The gate is set on the Western side of the roughly oblong yard. Gull and Cimri land in the North-eastern side, where the gap in the wall allows for whispered conversation if not easy passage. On the Eastern side is the workshop building, on the North side the office and the main target, while the Southern yard is almost entirely occupied by stinking vats ten feet across.

Two problems also become apparent. First is that there is light coming from the North side office. Somebody is still here. The second is that the intruders can hear padding steps on the ground. Louslik owns a guard dog, which might come to investigate the noise.

The horrid stench necessitates a Fort save unless the character has craft (armor or leatherworking) or profession (tanner) or similar. Failure results in being Nauseated for 1 round and sickened for another 9.

After this check, Gull and Cimri make Stealth checks.

She is rather frustrated to see that only Cimri managed to make it over the wall with her. She'd hoped for at least Jagan to make it as well; the man looked like he'd be an experienced climber. Frustration then turns to dismay when she realizes that there is still someone there, and that there are footsteps heading her way. Quickly and quietly, the half-elf tries to find a place out of sight, while readying her sword just in case.

Once she's found a suitable place to hide she whispers to Cimri. "Someone's coming. We need to get to the gate. I suggest we circle around the south. Stay clear of the light."

And so without waiting for any further instructions the diabolic looking creature once more disappears into the night before reappearing a few moments later standing by the gate, it's Glaive-Guisarme ready to do what it was instructed to do.

Meanwhile Talmar tries his best to shuffle through the hole in the fence, not wanting to embarrass himself any further by taking to long to get inside the tannery where Cimri and Gull were now waiting for the rest of them.

As the gate begins to swing open Lithroneus locks its eyes upon the dog, its last directive beginning to kick in. Talmar seeing this, mentally sends to his eidolon to hold for a moment though to see if it attacked first. Staying just inside the broken fence would not keep him safe for long, and the noble was not used to such horrid smells. However he could barely see a thing and so he moved to the darker of the two buildings, unaware that one of his allies had done the same due to the lack of light.

Talmar will move at half movement and try to find his way over to the darkened building without walking into anything to loudly [roll0]

Feeling somewhat better, Gull decides it's best to stay her hand for now, as rushing to help out Cimri immediately will put her with her back to the door with the lights on. Instead, she tries to sneak up to the lighted door and readies herself to attack the first person to step out of that door.

Lithorneus and Cassidy manage to bring down the dog. Alas, the damage is done, and it made noise enough to raise alarm with anyonbe still in the compound. Cimri, pretty torn up, pulls herself into cover behind one of the disgusting vats. They are undoubtedly the source of the smell, and are filled with waste and pelts. Gull is in position to intercept anyone inside the lit house. The door is pulled open, and an older man with a crossbow is framed in the door.

The readied action triggers.
Aside from straight in front of the door, the man enjoys cover from ranged and melee attacks.

Other characters can reach the door with a double move action. Only one can be head on, of course. Cimri remains in hiding.

Sarina calmly walks into the courtyard, the stench nearly overwhelming her. But, she keeps her calm. As the door opens, she beckons "Come on out.", and while there's nothing strange about the words - there's an undeniable power about them, a crushing weight that must be obeyed.

Using Command to force the crossbow user to use a move action to move close to us, preferably casually strolling past some of Sarina's armed escorts. Rolled a natural 20 for total 27 vs 12+Will.

Lesser Charm: You may force the target to perform one move, swift, or free action of your choice on its next turn (Will negates). This could include yelling loudly, falling to the ground, dropping its weapon, or moving in a generalized direction (away, toward, left, right, etc.). For the purpose of this talent, standing still is a free action. The target cannot use its other actions on that turn to undo the effect of this lesser charm (pick up a dropped weapon, move back to its old square, stand up if it fell down, etc.).

As Talmar walks to the gate, the smell is overwhelming as he slows himself down to keep the contents of his stomach as well as to keep his face hidden, the others may not mind people knowing who they were around town, however he was not so sure yet. After all if this man lived and reported it to the authorities he would never know who someone was that they didn't see.

Going to use stealth while he moves so he stays in hiding still out of sight [roll0]

From his position he watches Gull lash out at something before hearing Sarina's words and feeling the power behind them. Lithroneus do not forget your training, if it is a threat to our safety and refuses to obey we put it down before it can harm us. the summoner sends mentally to his eidolon as the diabolic creature begins moving to intercept and cut down any foes it sees that refuse to surrender.

If Crossbow dude attacks anyone/doesn't follow Sarina's orders Lithroneus will attack, if he simply does as she commanded Lothroneus would stay close but not attack, keeping him within reach so he could lash out at a moments notice however.

Glaive-Guisarme Attack roll if needed [roll1] Damage [roll2] No claw attack follow ups as he is either moving to intercept or has a ready action to go off to stop the man from attacking after he moves.

The man in the doorway ducks back to avoid Gull's slashing blow.

Sarina's spell compels him to leave the cover and walk past Gull and into plain view. He is revealed to be an aging man in worksman's clothes and apron. Mara and Jagan both manage to shoot him with sufficient accuracy. Struck by a bolt and arrow, he snaps out of the trance.

He takes a good look around before turning on his heel, attempting to flee back into the building. Alas, Gull manages to cut him down, her blade putting an end to the old man. Cimri emerges from cover to join Talmar. The yard grows quiet, and she raises a hand to her ear, listening theatrically. "Good job. Looks like we're all set to find what we came for."

As Jagan and Mara break the man out of Sarina's control Talmar watches in dissatisfaction as the old man in the working clothes of a leather worker tries to defend himself only to be cut down by Gull. It wasn't the fact that the man that had died that truly bothered him, after all people died each day. However he was subdued in the eyes of Talmar and of little threat to them had they simply stayed the course. Stepping out of the shadows he had been hiding in near the gate he walks over to the man and says a simple prayer for the mans soul to pass onto the nine hells before looking at Cimri and the others. "You cannot collect taxes from those who are dead." he says before turning to Sarina. "Your effort was well intended Sarina, thank you for trying. I suspect in a more civilized group your actions would have had a much greater impact." Talmar says as he stands before looking around the complex.

"Go and get what you came for, I am already tired of this job." he says to no one in particular as he makes his way near the gate and waits with Lithroneus, the two keeping an eye out to the road. He was unsure why his teacher would send him to do a job with such people who couldn't show a bit of restraint, however he suspected that they would possibly be the death of him if they didn't learn how to be more subtle and work within the confines of the law.

Gull turns to the others. "Everyone still in one piece? Let's get..." She is interrupted by another wave of nausea washing over her. "Ugh... bluh... Someone else get in there... first. Don't want to throw up all over whatever it is we're looking for in there."

This was a death that could have been avoided, thus the mans death benefits no one." Talmar tries to explain slightly bothered by the lack of respect for the dead, but not as much as when they had killed him. "I'll cheer up when the job is done and we get paid. After a while, the smell is more tolerable as the intruders adjust to it.

"Alas, poor Louslik" Cimri says theatrically over the body. "And so is justice served or whatever. Time to find what we came for"

The building that the man came from is an office, housing a desk with a lamp, as well as a heavy safe in the corner. On the table is a notebook, the last page having had the writing interrupted by the attack and unexpected end of the writer's life. In the yard near the gate is a loading platform with a few wooden crates. The other building is a workshop which houses some finished works, tapestries by the looks of them, as well as a set of fine tools.

The man has the key to the safe, so whoever feels like rooting through the corpse can then open the safe, as well as the outer gate.

If you take his life he can never pay taxes again, and he nor all those who might get the same idea will learn anything. Never mind civic servants rely on taxes to get paid, no taxes no pay check." he points out as he goes over to the near death man and calls out to the others. "Does anyone have a way to stabilize him, I can heal him however he will be wide awake once more and I would rather he not see all of our faces if possible. If we can't once you are done I will heal him and act like a concerned citizen that has come to heal him when I saw a bunch of people taking off with a lot of items."

It seems like there are no further threats present at the moment. Cimri is limping a little from the wounds inflicted by the guard dog as she enters to watch over the work in the office. She tosses the keys she liberated from the body to Jagan, who examines the safe. Finding it safe, he unlocks it. The door opens, revealing an assortment of leather purses branded with the initials L.T. A peek inside finds silver pieces in each one, hundreds, thousands. Each purse holds neat stacks, and are sorted by size. Put together, there's somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 gp in silver coins. A hefty weight that needs to be carried between the group.

"And there it is" Cimri smiles, looking at the contents and idly leafing through the ledger.

Mara manages to stabilize the owner, whose bleeding stops. He does not stir.

The silver coins weigh well in excess of 100 lbs. The amount needs to be counted.
Masterwork leatherworking tools (marked L.T.)
Antique masterwork leatherworking tools found on Louslik (also marked L.T.)
Leather tapestries of fine make (you may roll appraise) weighing 20 lbs total
Fresh leather (you may roll appraise), weighs about 500 lbs
Masterwork heavy crossbow
A polished stone that Mara recognizes as a Thunderstone due to her alchemy training

"Thank you Mara." Talmar says as the warrior rides forward and stabilizes the old man. "And what did he see Jagan? People coming to rob his establishment, did he get a good look at anyone's face? If so perhaps leaving a reminder that he should pay his taxes and if he ever wants to see..." Talmar digs through the mans belongings until he finds his tools and holds them up "His tools, again he would do best to forget the faces he may have seen. After all the are old, no doubt marked down from father to son for at least one generation possibly more. If not the gold price for these, the sentimental value will keep him in check." Talmar explains, knowing that if someone had his family heirloom he would go at great lengths to get it back.

As a few go inside the building to get what they came for Talmar has Litherous lift up the man and place him gently in a place he would not be noticed right away, however would also not risk infection from the filth below. After all if the workers came in the morning it would be best to have as much time as possible before what was done was noticed, as such he pushes the dead dog into one of the vats, with luck it didn't stay here overnight and often went home with its master.

At Mara's words Talmar nods in agreement. "It's a lot easier to stop a rebellion from gaining momentum by keeping the status que the same while pointing out all the bloodshed and loss a rebellion causes. If we kill him it makes it a lot harder to prove that not having a rebellion is a good idea. If he stays alive it looks simply like day to day life in the Empire, some may ask why his place was hit, and if any get to close its as simple as stating we are tax collectors for the empire, he attacked us, and we defended ourselves. At that point it shows we in fact had the right to kill him and choose not to further showing how a rebellion would be bad for the people as the empire being lenient to its subjects was the only thing keeping them alive."

"That is true most of the time I would agree, however when someone comes around promising more food and ale, a better standard of life, and less killing for silly reasons they are more likely to join a rebellion that is already in motion. Talmar notes the nine suits of studded leather armor and begins examining them more closely as he thinks back to all the nobility lessons his Mother and Father drilled into his head, trying to think of who or where Remesiana might be. After all it seemed odd that if the man was refusing to pay his taxes that the government would keep giving him work.

"Pitty I didn't have time to write the ransomed note. Oh well, let us hope he expects someone will be contacting him for his family tools and doesn't say anything about the people he did see." Talmar says plainly hoping the man had not seen him personally, however unwilling to risk being caught to leave a letter behind. And with that he is once more led by Litherous out into the darkness, hoping to leave this place behind.

Leaving the top blank at the moment as there were a lot of moving parts and I'm honestly unsure where Talmar was as I figured he was outside giving his pushing the dog in the vats and directing his eidolon to move the body and such. Depending on what he learns about Remesiana however may change his actions prior to the light a little bit. Nothing to move backwards though.

As they pause in the room waits for the all clear to be able to leave the building and looks to Cimri, "Where too now boss lady? Time for the payment part, and that's the best bit""

Jagan nods to Cimri with a grin. "Pay and drinks sound good to me. I'll let the others think about the rebellion, though," he pauses with a wolfish grin, "Rebellion would be good business with plenty heads to be clipped "

Heading out, laden with the money from the chest he joins Talmar in slipping through the gate and heading to Ash House.

"For leather type stuff, ol' Louslik does good work" Cimri says. "Most soldier types are about steel, and from what we're about to gather, he ain't so hot with the state."

The group departs swiftly, before the approaching people reach the tannery. (Does anyone close the gate or anything?)

What remains of this manor looks like it could collapse at any moment. Bearing the scars of a decades-old fire, the house is blackened and sags under the weight of its collapsed third floor. Shattered windows pose no barrier to the riot of ivy scaling each gable and invading every cavity. Bent pillars and a cracked granite porch lead to a warped door bearing a rusty doorknocker shaped like a boar’s head.

The infamous Ash House. Belonging to the noble house that ruled the area of Longacre, the building mysteriously caught fire on the night that the noble Fex house took charge 60 years ago.

"Nice place, isn't it?" Cimri asks.

I misremembered the location. It's due South, though still close to 100 miles away, so the point that his armour goes far and wide remains.

As Talmar hears Cimri confirm what he had been thinking himself he points to the leather armor. "Any chance of us being able to take these with us then? If not perhaps have someone keep an eye out to see who comes to pick this up? It seems more likely that the rebels will be using it than our allies. Litherous should be able to carry some of them." he states looking to his diabolic companion who simply nods and goes to carry as many as he can before they depart.

Main one being taken will be the one marked with the symbol of Chelaxian Dottari, with the rest being whatever you believe the ediolon could reasonably carry with his 230lbs. carrying cappacity

As the group arrives at that burnt remains of the Ash house Talmar wonders if this would have eventually happened to his own family had it not been for his mother stopping his father from being so foolish and going against the crown as strongly as he once had. It was a good reminder for him of why he was here and that what he was doing even now, was justified. My family will not end like this one. he tells himself. "It is indeed an interesting place Cimri, not quite what I am accustomed to, however a good reminder of what happens to all who oppose the crown." he says not against their little getaway house where they were to meet her contact and get paid.

"Love what you've done to the place." Sarina states without a hint of sarcasm, while absentmindedly touching the burnt wood. She still wasn't quite sure if this was the sudden-but-inevitable betrayal step as it always were in the stories about scoundrels, but they hadn't really done that much to warrant such a thing. Besides, unless some more in the group was in on it, she was confident such a plan would backfire.

Cimri smiles to Gull and Jagan. "Yeah, it's a pretty sweet place. 'specially since it's free and all." she says, heading for one of the windows on the ground floor and climbing in. "Pity the door's stuck so we don't get a classy entrance. C'mon, let's go meet Razelago and get paid guys"

The door is stuck, and the window takes you into a large parlor. Pieces of battered furniture lie there amid the choking scent of dust and ashes. Beneath a mantle crowded with empty whiskey bottles, the fireplace shows evidence of recent use. The scorched, broken visages of curious cherubs leer from atop archways leading deeper into the house.

The main entrance is blocked by a bit of collapsed roof, looking like it would take a number of people to try and shift. Stairs lead to the second floor, where Cimri leads the way. She takes you to an office. Decorated with toppled bookshelves, a table, and some chairs that are half-covered in ivy, this room was perhaps once a library. The ashes and pulp of burned, waterlogged books lay heaped amid fallen
furniture, creating a large nest of sorts against one wall. A pantherine creature lifts its head to take in the interlopers before dozing again

A set of folding paper screens divides the room. A lantern flickers on the opposite side, projecting the silhouette of a bald man leaning on a desk.

"Perhaps we can help with that." Talmar says before looking over to Litherous and indicating to try and force open the door. With luck the eidolon would be able to force it open and thus he would be able to garner some respect from the others as so far all he had really done was make sure the man they wanted to kill didn't die, and talk about the law. He wished to be a useful part of the group, even if he didn't fully agree with their methods as of yet.

[roll0] using guidance on the eidolon to give it that +1 bonus that may make the difference between a pass and a fail

Once inside the building Talmar looks around the large parlor at all the broken furniture, having to cover his mouth as someone accidentally kicks up a tuff of dust and sends him into a small coughing fit. "Litherous why don't you stay here for now. Relax, if I need you I will call." he informs the eidolon which simply nods and follows his order as it looks around the place before going to the main entrance and begining to try and find a way to move everything.

Talmar notes the large amounts of alcohol bottles near the fireplace making a note of how Cimri seemed to like to spend her money, it would be a useful took in his book if he ever needed to win her favor to his side. "So Cassidy was it, how did you get roped into this mess?" Talmar asks politely as they make their way up the stairs to where they would meet their contact.

[roll1] again guidance is involved

"I assume he is yours, and you are Cimri's contact, Razelago?" Talmar says as he steps forward, keeping enough distance between him and the feline, but standing out from the crowd just enough. "If so the job is done, though I have a few questions like why wasn't the man arrested for not paying his taxes before you sent a group like this to "collect" them?" he asks curious of how the man would respond to such a simple question, however try to gauge the figures stance on things, and if he had the empire's best interests at heart.

"You have done well, Cimri." he tells the criminal. "The payment for all of you is in the parlor. And a bonus for job well done. I'm sure we'll have plenty to talk about in the near future."

Talmar listens to what the what he assumed to be, older gentleman, says before responding. "He is indeed alive, if barely. I was worried however he may have seen some of the faces of the people who "robbed" him however and thus took this as collateral." Talmar explains as he pulls out the antique leather working tools and places them on a table or such nearby. "I planned on leaving a letter stating if he ever wished to see them again he would do well not to reveal the identities of those he saw however a light was spotted coming towards the tannery and we had to leave before I was able to. I don't suppose you would be able to find a way for this letter to arrive to him?" Talmar questions unsure how far the figure behind the curtain was willing to go to keep his employees safe.

"There was also another thing of interest, Louslik had suits of leather armor in a box to be shipped to Remesiana. I only point this out because there were nine suits in total, one being marked with the symbol of Chelaxian Dottari, as if it were meant for an officer. And from what Cimri said most soldier types rather have metal suits of armor. As such I had my companion take as much of them as he could, including the elaborate suit marked for a Dottari incase they were for spies. I figured you would know better than I." "Well done. I shall handle this for you."
"And as for the armor... Remesiana is located at the coast. Perhaps meant for ship work." he adds noncommittally.

The parlor is downstairs, the way they came. On the desk, Jagan and the others can find a chest, and a large case. In the case, there are seven purses, one bigger than others, each brimming with gold coins. Cimri picks up the biggest. "Cuz I'm the mastermind of the operation" she says by the way of explanation. ""And what do we have here, hmm?" she asks, opening the case. Inside is a large metal shield marked with the red cross of Cheliax on black field, and on top of it a number of other weapons, each of fine craft. Cimri picks up a dagger, tossing it idly by the blade and catching it. Leaning to a wall by the kitchen is a tall sheathed blade and a polearm.

Also now present are eight bottles of Wiscarni (from Westcrown) wine of a fine vintage, as well as bread and fine meat and fish, a proper feast to restore their strength and spirits.

Upstairs, Razelago turns his attention to Mara. ""There certainly is. Alas, the way to the second floor bath currently houses the third floor's bedroom. As long as you can navigate that, the room itself seems to have survived the fire"

There is a purse with 100 gp for each PC.
There are also masterwork gear:
Heavy steel shield, dueling sword, kukri, light crossbow, lance and elven curved blade

"Thank you, my Mother always made it a point to remind me to always have some form of leverage should things go wrong. And if I am not mistaken he saw at least two faces, and it wouldn't take much looking around town I am sure for someone to run into us. Can't have that after all if we are to serve the law we cannot be seen being arrested by the law. It would undermine my personal goals as well." the noble says plainly to the man behind the screen, making it clear he was not just some fool to be pointed in a direction and told to do something, he had his own wants and needs and would not simply do something because it paid well. It also had to advance his own goals.

"I will take it as safe to assume you work for some form of our government. I had my friend carry the shipment back here, if you can look into this further and be sure the armor was not to be used for rebel spies I will happily turn it over to be returned. However if they were meant for spies I would like to request we keep them as evidence against this tannery owner for crimes of inciting unrest and aiding terrorists." Talmar states, this way they would either return the leather armor to its rightful owners or they would be evidence in a crime being committed thus a way to show this rebellion that no one was out of Thrune's sight.

Talmar isn't downstairs, however Cimri didn't really plan anything well it was up to us to find a way in, deal with the unknown security there, take out the person who wasn't supposed to be there as well as stabilize them. Only thing she did was know the place and what to look for. I say we push her to split evenly.

Once the meeting upstairs is done Talmar bows his head slightly before departing the room. "I agree with your idea Mara about a bath, depending on how difficult it is to get there I may help you try to clear a path. If we intend to stay in this house long we may as well make it presentable unlike what we walked through in that parlor." he notes, referring to the mess of liquor bottles seemingly spread everywhere down below, or the mess blocking the doorway.

"I just hope if we work together again our plan is more laid out and involves as little bloodshed as possible next time. We got lucky that we were able to stabilize the man this time, I doubt we will always be in a situation where luck is on our side in such a way. I think if we encounter resistance like that again we first allow Sarina to try her charms before we use brute force, this way we do not look like the aggressors in a conflict." Talmar says looking to the others to see if the agreed with this idea.

As the pouches of gold are split Talmar notes Cimri's slightly larger cut, and while she did find the job that is in truth about all she did for someone claiming to be the brains. A job like that should have been scouted out and planned better. We should have known about the dog as well as him being inside the place before even entering. If you want the big bucks you need to put in the work for it. I think we should all get an equal share unless you have another job lined up where you can prove to be more competent?" Mara makes her way to the bathroom. Examining the bathtub, it seems like there's something there at the bottom, but as she gets closer to look, a spectral figure of a woman enters through the wall, her features twisted with hate as she attacks Mara.

As Jagan tosses the crossbow to him he catches it with ease before inspecting it. "Thank you for understanding Jagan. Unlike you close combat is not really my forte, my father tried teaching me, however it was the skills of my mother I was more skilled with." he admits as he takes his old crossbow out and offers it up to the man if he wanted it.

"My teacher lives in town and it was a request from him to help in this matter as he is a retired public official. Seeing how it was to serve the empire and would give myself and Lithroneus time to learn how to coordinate with one another I agreed readily." Talmar offers as explanation as to how he came to be working with Cimri on this job.

As the night was beginning to settle down Talmar was very slowly drinking a single glass of the bottle of Wiscarni wine. "It is always good to have a little taste of home don't you agree?" he asks the others who seem to not be savoring the taste and make of the wine as much as he. It is a few moments later as he is getting ready to get some bread when he hears the shriek from upstairs. "Lithroneus upstairs now, bring your weapon and make sure Ms. Mara is decent before I enter." he tells his devil servant as he grabs his new crossbow and loads it as he begins running up the stairs behind the others.

Jaggan and Gull are the first ones upstairs, and moving through the cleared path. They're followed swiftly by the others, with Talmar heading the rear. Upstairs, the balcony walkway to the baths is wide enough for two aside, though one will need to balance on the rubble. At the far end, Mara is backing away from a floating, ectoplasmic figure of a noblewoman that attacks her.

Since the map doesn't work...
The enemy can be targeted by ranged attacks (or spells).
Melee characters may take a move action to reach the enemy, but only two adjacent squares are available, and it can't be flanked in its current position.

As Talmar reaches the top of the stairs he looks within the bathroom after being told it was okay by Lithroneus and is surprised by the creature he sees. Trying to use his knowledge he had gained throughout the years of study he tries to determine what it is while taking out his crossbow.

Talmar is familiar with ectoplasm. It is a semi-physical substance that some spirits use to construct a body for themselves. It is vulnerable to physical forces, but truly vulnerable only to larger slashes that disrupts its structure.

Sorry about the arrow attack last round, I read it after I posted and didn't want to remove that part and make it seem like I was deleting a bad roll.

As Talmar realizes what this creature is made out of he calls out to the others. "It is a spirit, but it is made of ectoplasm meaning unlike others we can harm it. Use slashing weapons, they will have the most effect." he explains while he waits to see if he should summon forth more infernal help or not to deal with this monster.

She said this was her home, and we know its a former nobles house so [roll0] Though Talmar is not from the area he is versed in nobility so it is possible (unlikely given how Thrune strips away names of nobles houses that defy them and changes history often) that he has heard of this person.

Lithroneus looks infront of him to see Gull trying to do battle with the creature and says a thanks in infernal before launching into his on onslaught of attacks once more, trying to bring the monster down before it hurt his master or anyone else his master cared about at this point and time.

Between Cassidy and Lithroneus, the spirit is cut to size, wailing as her ectoplasmic body loses cohesion and collapses on the ground, where the gooey substance begins to evaporate.

"Truth be told I planned on returning to my teachings unless something came up in the morning." Talmar admits to Jagan when asked what everyone planned to do next. " The only reason I took on this job was to help the empire, and well walking around at this time of night after the job was done is asking to be caught. Come the morning unless something came up I planned on leaving. There was far to little information for the job we just did, and it almost led to disaster. Kind of like how we were told it was safe here and then one of us was attacked after trying to simply use the bathroom." he points out, not blaming Cimri as her explanation made sense, it simply lacked vision for wanting something more out of life.

"I think come the morning I would like to take up speaking with our employer Razelago at least once more. Jagan you proved yourself a worthy ally in any battle in our last job and if he has something else that benefits the nation I see no reason we cannot work together once again, if he doesn't, well I am sure my family could afford to hire you on as a personal guard." The group rests. After the night raid and the feast, the position of the Sun is more like noon when wakefulness comes.

After the ectoplasmic entity was vanquished, no harm came to them, and even without that Lithroneus was there to stand guard. Despite her heavy drinking, Cimri seems fine and alert. Resilience or a dose of Alchemist's Kindness.

There is a sudden ring of a bell from the second floor. From Razelago.

dantiesilva

That night Talmar mostly keeps to himself, after all he wasn't sure whether to trust this lot or not yet with what he was capable of just yet. Sure they had done a single job together but that didn't make them all friends. It was for this reason and a few others he drank only half of his bottle of Wiscarni as he thought over their job and what they could have done differently, he had made quite a few mistakes and spent far to much time trying to get in. I will have to do better next time to prove my skills next time. he thinks to himself as he goes over the many different scenarios that could have played out, and what each one might have done moving forward.

Waking up halfway through the day was not new to him, he had often attended parties at his mother's behest back home, however today was different. Instead of feeling like he had accomplished a lot, and thus deserved the rest, he instead felt like he had wasted half his day. Though when he realized the others were just waking up as well he was slightly less embarrassed. Quickly checking in with Lithroneus about what had happened while they slept he made his way over to the rest of the group and greeted each. "I hope you all slept well, Cimri the fact you are still standing is impressive. I know nobles who cannot drink half as much as you did last night without waking up with a massive hangover." Talmar says, genuinely impressed, after all at such parties one often drank as much as all those around him or her. The trick was keeping your wit still while doing so, many a noble had been embarrassed at such parties before from over indulging before making a fool of themselves, and thus their houses.

When the bell rang from the second floor Talmar looked to Cimri, "I assume thats how he calls you when he has a job? We call servants like that in a similar fashion back home, I do not know how I feel about being treated as some simple butler." Talmar remarks debating on whether or not to join the others walking upstairs, however if it was for another job he could perhaps be persuaded.
