50th Comic 10/02/2008

Anyway, for our 50th comic we're making a very special Fan Mail Comic! We need questions so please send yours into [email protected], we'll select a few questions from the ones we recieve. Also, please use an alias (like Dave from Washington etc.). Real name and location or fake, it doesn't matter.

This looks promisingly good

Speaking of which, I completely forgot about the webcomic I was making. :smalleek:

Nevermind I'll think on that myself if I'll ever post it or not. In the meantime I'll have a look at this.

Certainly looks good, I've certainly considered the prospect of webcomicry since I got the hang of InkScape, and it's good to see one of our most prevalent Inkscape artists giving it a shot

Every few days at ABR I always think "Wow, theys guys, Lying, Threeshades, Kpenguin, Salmon, they have all made such a good story, good art, I bet these guys could make an AWESOME webcomic if they wanted to."

GO SALMON!

It's drow. Personally I do not know what a moon elf is. I'll have to wiki it sometime. My Dungeons and Dragons knowledge only comes from OOTS and Dungeons and Dragon Online. This comic will be only "Loosely" based on D&D.

The fourth wall must have extremely low hit points and hardness to be broken with such frequency...

thats not unusual in stick figure comics. I blame it on the fact that walls in stick figure comic style generally have no stereometric depth and thus are infinitely thin.

@Salmon
Great comics there; Just a hint from one webcomic artist to the other: You should have a set pixel width for all of your strips. Its just a layouting thing but it makes the whole thing much prettier. The strips in my webcomic are usually 750 pixels wide only in some cases they are thinner.

Please tell me you have written the entire story out, and are just doing the artwork now! Too many really good webcomics start strong, but use all the good material early, and fold their doors after a few weeks.

You did great on the fire from panel two to seven, when it was seen, but the other two times you didn't show it affecting the characters.

Actually, I'm a little confused...

At the end of strip five, there were three people next to Korul and Delrek: the female elf rogue, the (gender?) elf (wizard?) and the halfling mage. Several feet away was the human fighter with the great sword, and Frank the Warforged with red eyes.

When Korul blasted two people, I assumed it was the fighter and Frank, based on who was standing where, and Frank's red eyes. Afterwards, the fighter was knocked into the fire, and the elf wizard (?) is no where to be seen. If the fighter survived, why couldn't Frank?

Yeah, it's a new strip, and way too early for pain in the ass nit-picking, but that's what happens here at GiantITP.

I'd like to see more of Frank or a different Warforged, maybe working with Korul and Delrek. But you guys have the script, and haven't asked for volunteers. Just comments, positive or negative. :smallcool: So that's what I offer. Hopefully much more positive than negative. At least that's my plan.

Oh, what are the odds of getting a Korul and Delrek sigtar? Neko Miko needs more friends.

Surfing HalfOrc
2007-11-20, 08:35 AM
By process of elimination, I figured it had to be the elf mage. But with strip five open directly above strip six, it wasn't as clear as it could have been. There was no indication of movement, and eye position between Frank and the brown fighter, then Frank's eyes and the second ash pile was somewhat confusing.

Meh... No big deal. Moving on.

I assume there is an overarching story? I've seen quite a bit of "fan art" strips since I stumbled across OotS, but this is one of the best, by far. I'd hate for it to end after just a few strips.

I heard from some random college professor that most of the cuss words you hear in foreign languages came from English and they made their own based on the naughty words from English. he gave this as an example: before the English mixed as well as they do with the Germans, the worst the Germans had in their arsenal was "shut up you donkey."

and if you listen to the Japanese video games that are actually in Japanese the cuss words are new slang that showed as they marketed to the American culture.

That was one of the "nifty" things about the old "Spelljammer" setting. Anybody form any world might get picked up in sphere A and dropped off in sphere B, and MIGHT be able to do some of the stuff they did in their homesphere in the new one.

After that, people started mixing and matching however they felt, and eventually dropped the "We caught a ride on a gnomish sidewheeler."

Salmon, what did castaras do to you?(and it was dr. bath(the female) who turned you human.... ?)
*avidly awaits next comic*

The Salmon hit Castaras with a gender-changing potion.
In retaliation, "Cassius" turned the Salmon into the Almighty Bear.
In an attempt to fix this, an accident resulted in Dr. Bath splitting himself into an Evil Dr. Bath and a Chaotic Ms. Bath, while turning the Salmon-Bear into a Human.
And now the Hu-Salmon has a vendetta against me...

Yes! Treasure chests popping out from no where!

I'm playing the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games again (hurray for emulators!), and it always kills me when the game goes, "You defeated the Giant Worm! The Giant Worm had a Treasure Chest! You find the Basic Clothes!" (or what ever).

Hm? What do you mean? I was thinking that since magic missile shoots one missile plus one for every two caster levels beyond 1st, Korul would have to be lvl 3-4 so that the casting fits.

EDIT: Trying to delete your post, eh? Sneaky.

Yes, I'd forgotten the exact events of the comic and thought you were referring to the number of magic missile spells he cast, rather than the quantity of missiles produced.

We can also assume that the warforged warrior/fighter/barbarian/whatever must have rolled pretty low on hp to be incinerated by a burning hands, since at level 3 or 4, the max damage of burning hands is 12 and 16 respectively. This means that, in order to die in a single hit, those npcs must have had 1-6 hp.

Sorry, but since the class-and-geekery-fu is taken up by more competent players in the OotS board, I'm trying to jump on this very fine strip. And yes, I realize that Undertaker's only experience with DnD is DDO, but that isn't an excuse for me not to overanalyze things.

Curse you kpenguin. Stop picking on my flaws! :smallwink:

Once again, I'll put it down to comic effect. And Korul was going to look pretty meagre compared to Delrek's kickass bard-tumbling halfling-kebab'ing fight scene. Plus I promised my friend I'd try get a Mortal Kombat reference in the strip.

P.S. My D&D knowledge has grown! I've gotten to know a lot more from Dungeons and dragons on my PSP. Now when I'm writing scripts I simulate the effects of spells and such.

He could of course merely be first level, for a group of two level 3-4 adventurers, four guys of first and second level with a third level leader would still be a decent challenge.

EDIT: I forgot to mention. This comic rawks. I'm hoping to start making one of my own when ever I get ahead enough in computers class.

Now the question is, "Will our Heroes get their first mission from a mysterious stranger sitting in a dark corner of a bar" or something else?

I do agree on the first point. But OOTS is far too slowly moving right now.

On the second point, there is no real joke in the comic. You don't need one every time, sometimes moving the plot is more important than some simple joke.

Nice... The party that they fought was that big thing a warforged from Eberron D&D?

It's been suggested before that it is, and the author and artist have not said "No." But the story doesn't seem to be set in Ebberon, and even the Giant has made Ebberon references in OotS.

I hope more Warforged get a chance to appear in this strip, maybe even as party members. But Undertaker and Salmon have a script already written, we just have to wait for the presentation.
