So, I noticed a regrettable lack of thread about this gem of a game and figured I would bite the bullet and make one.

For those who don't know Valheim is a Viking Themed Survival & crafting game with a somewhat unique twist in that progress is gated behind not just aquisition of resources, but defeating a series of bosses. It can be played in single or multiplayer and inviting steam friends Into your world is as easy as checking a circle before starting up the game, supporting up to 10 players without mods.

Personally, I love it. Though work has lead to me only managing to beat two of the bosses so far, the second fight definitely ramps up the difficulty from the first, so I'm looking forward to the next.

Me and my friends have beaten the 4th boss and now we're just sorta milling about. No reason to beat the 5th as there's nothing after it. Having a bunch of fun, though I do wish there was a Character Equip Screen so I didn't eat up 5 inventory spots with what I'm wearing.

Though considering that's probably my biggest gripe the game is doing pretty great.

My only gripes are the inventory thing, and the fact that raising ground to meet early buildings for support and just convenience of not having to jump into your house can be a pain. The level ground tool doesnt really do enough to actually level the ground in a wide area IMO.

Its not amazing, but having played a bunch of Ark, Atlas and 7D2D I'll take the, slightly janky, leveler we have over the nothing that we get elsewhere. Hopefully in Hearth and Home the do a bit of work on it to make it smoother

Honestly I haven't used the leveler all that much aside from to clear brush for roads, but I mostly build on stilts anyhow.

So does anybody have any advice for hauling large amounts of metal long distances? Besides using a cart, which is somewhat impractical due to a body of water in the way.

Also, how the heck do i find a swamp biome?

Put a cart on your boat, profit.

Swamp was tough to find for me too, you just have to look for it in more islands. And then you have to survive going in there.

Step 1: Create a New World
Step 2: Name new World Storage
Step 3: Make a simple house with storage boxes in Storage World
Step 4: When full on metal, log out and then log back into Storage.
Step 5: Deposit metal in box
Step 6: Step 7: Log back into original world and go through your portal
Step 7: Retrieve metal from Storage World.

As for finding a swamp.... sail around?

It is slightly, but dear lord I am not spending 45 minutes sailing around with that much metal.

The better boats come with built in storage; everything except the raft I'm pretty sure.

The Karve comes with 4 slots, the Longboat with 18. The long boat is big enough you could fit 4+ carts on it. However, if there's a big storm you'll likely to lose the carts.

Generally, I find it easier to just take a long boat and inventory worth of ore in one trip or to take mats for a mini base with me. With the exception of iron most materials are only used for the weapons. Setting up a small base with a decent forge and couple of smelters is trivial and a huge time saver. Make what you need gear wise there and then move on. For everything else there's portals.

He hasn't found a swamp yet, so he can't build anything better than a Karve, which comes with only 4 slots as Thomas said. Putting a cart on it allows him to carry much more.

Heh, that was fun.

I now have to resist the urge to build a WW1 trench network every time I play the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgFzP5m1k_c).

Curious, has anyone tried using logs as levers in a lever/fulcrum setup?

Not quite sure what specifically you'd be trying to lift/move, but no I haven't.

So that video's incidentally responsible for my last major project. One of my friends built a base around the Elder spawn since he liked having a permanent fire that needed no fuel. Our Moder spawn was literally at the peak of tallest mountain in its range, just cliffs up to it and then the altar circle. After seeing that you could mine underneath the boss spawn in that video, I tried to build a floating mage tower. Stone blocks all supported radially from the altar.

Sadly it didn't work. I could only mine so far down on the cliff and the altar went all the way down instead of floating like the elder platform. It turned out alright, I love the view from the top. But I'm still sad I couldn't build a proper floating castle. My friends want to swap to a modded server, maybe I'll make it at the elder base if we do switch.

I have a giant ditch around my base. Keeps the riff raff out

There is a distinct lack of siege weapons in this game, and I figured it could be interesting to try and build a catapult that throws half-logs.

Nah. Make a ramp and throw a boat instead

Well. Came to what I am now calling the Death Swamp this weekend. An island that so far as I can tell is entirely swamp, was halfway across the world, and was the nearest Bonemass spawn. Proceeded to accidentally beach the longboat on a sandbar. Before getting swarmed by Draugr and Leeches.

Managed to get a beachhead in even if it was touch and go for a bit. But definitely was a bit more hardcore than the local swamp.

Every swamp is the death swamp. None of them are fun places.

There's a swamp near my spawn point that was rough but not too bad. Comparitively the Death Swamp was like going from Dagobah to Catachan.

Eh. At least you could just go to a swamp to get to your nearest Bonemass spawn. When me and my friends played the Bonemass swamp required us to navigate around and in some places THROUGH a Plains zone to get there.

If you haven't encountered a Plains zone yet, that may not sound as frustrating as it actually was.

How is the game compared to Conan: Exiles? Is there random attacks by NPC forces on your base justifying building fortifications? Can you get thralls for work and defense?

Never played Conan: Exiles.

1.) Yes, there are random attacks on your base, alongside just wandering monsters that will blunder into it. The attacks ramp up in difficulty with each boss defeated.

2.) No. No NPC helpers, you can tame boars for farming, wolves for defense, and Lox for defense. But for human allies you need friends with the game.

No base defenders eh? Yeah in Conan you can raid NPC villages and knock NPCs out and throw them on Ye Ol Wheel of Pain and then equip and set them up to defend your base and equip them as archers or melee and so forth. Additionally you can hope other PCs on the server will come help if your base comes under attack. But there are major flaws as in if you make your base too hard or impossible for NPC raiders to get into(building in a lake to use as a moat and putting the drawbridge up for example) then they will spawn inside your base. You can also use them as adventuring buddies.

Both games sound like they are resource gathering slogs. The ship thing sounds cool though

One thing that's good about Valheim is there is no resource loss. If you break your gear, it's free to fix. You just go back to a workbench and click the button to fix it. If you demolish something you built, aside from torches, you get the full resource cost back. Torches you get everything but the fuel source, but resin is ludicrously plentiful.
