View Full Version : Adventures of the Magic Map

You have all finally gathered together. Each of your map pieces leading you to place to join together. You'd each perhaps say the others are all odd beings, if you hadn't seen mostly odd (to you) beings since your world ended.

Your place of meeting turned out to be the remains of a mansion on a pastoral little stretch of land. Low healthy green grass and a smattering of trees and shrubbery here and there. The mansion itself, mostly just a few walls in varied states of collapse, several lingering support beams, desolate door frames, and surely once-promising marble steps leading to the entrance and rear door.

It's a pleasant day (at least by human standards). It's warm, but not hot. There's a slight breeze. The sky above is brilliant blue with only a few bright white clouds drifting at a snail's pace.

You met around the front, made extremely brief introductions (basically "I have a map too, let's put them together"), and followed the path the map gave you around to the back. From there it seems a straight path off somewhere in the distance.

You all spotted back there a lovely (or perhaps perplexing) sight. A small hedge maze a few yards into what would have been considered the back yard. Nothing with the slightest hopes of anyone getting lost in. It wasn't terribly large, and most importantly the hedges were only up to about waist height on even the shortest of you. There seemed to be an opening in the middle, though you couldn't spot if there was anything there from here.

So, without any spoken agreement, you all began to wander into the little maze as something to do while getting to know each other. Maybe you'd find something at the center. Probably nothing of great promise. Maybe nothing at all. But it was easier to talk on a slow paced walk to a nearby goal than a long march into who knows where with people you didn't even yet know the names of.

Ok, so I expect you guys to have your characters introduces themselves to the others and just generally RP a bit. Even if some of you feel like you made "strong silent type" characters or whatever that might not talk, seriously I want you guys to actually talk to the others here with the interest of getting to know each other.
This is a roleplaying game afterall, so I do actually expect roleplaying to occur. Which is difficult to have happen if half the characters try to avoid speaking or such.

"Well, let's get started."

The spider-creature looks up at the hedge walls. "I wonder if I could climb the hedge walls, instead of walking on the ground? I've missed the trees from my own world, and these hedge walls wouldn't be the worst substitute... if I can actually climb them."

The tentacle-haired woman stands from examining the hedge, one of her tentacles slipping a magnifying glass into her bag. She pats down her dress and it moves quite easily despite its seemingly fungal material I'm sure they were lovely. The flora of this world has largely been duller than in my own home, if I'm to be honest. She looks pensively at the maze before them It doesn't look dangerous, but looks can be deceiving. I suppose before we go any further we should give each other our names. I am Elgliastin, formerly of the city of Stareye in The Formation.

Jenyra wasn't quite sure on how to deal with the new folks. Outside of the tiger man, they all looked so alien. Especially the spider guy. However, that didn't stop her from being cordial. "I'm Jenyra, just a wandering spellcaster." That was all they needed to know. She studied the hedge maze closely. "They call that a maze? I could probably go through that with my eyes closed."

"Given by the gods? I simply absorb power from the Weave. I actually distribute it to others."

The spider-creature realizes that introductions are being given, and that he hasn't actually given his name. "My name is Umbrasericum."

I would love to understand what you mean by the weave. Are you a weaver by trade and what kind of power do you give to others? I am unsure how to pronounce your name, is there something shorter I can call you Umbra? Zanzibar says with a big toothy grin.

"I've heard of the Weave, but I don't know much about it. All I know is I was naturally born with magic. Strange magic." She let a small flame flicker into existence above her hand, as if to prove her point, then clenched her fist, snuffing the flame out. "My magic, barring one exception, is completely fire-based. Helpful if I wanted to deal with dryads or undead, not so when dealing with other kinds of creatures."

Elgliastin smiles at Zanzibar's gesture, but draws out a strange device the whirls in her hand. It appears to be an astrolabe of some sort, but is moving on its own I'm quiet read when you are. She looks to the bat-spider and then Jenyra with interest as they discuss where their magic comes from We're certainly a gifted group. I myself possess some of the more common magics of my people, as well as spells useful for the understanding and control of creatures summoned from other planes. And I have a handful at of those at my call, when needed.

"Summoning? That sounds impressive. What kinds of beings do you summon?" For an evoker like Jenyra, such a concept of conjuring was almost alien to her. She'd seen some conjurers in her time, but she'd never met one before the Dissolution.

Mostly fey and elementals. They're generally less... obstinate when called on. Less of a danger to the summoner and those around them. The astrolabe spins again and an illusion appears in front of her, a statuette of a reptilian beast with a beak and feathered wings where forelimbs would be. The underside of its wings are membranous like under the cap of a mushroom. He's much bigger, in reality.

Umbrasericum hesitates as he considers Zanzibar's request. "Ah... I worship a goddess named 'Umbra.' Maybe 'Seri,' instead?."

"To answer your question, as completely as I can manage... in my native world, magic's natural state of existence was an energy field permeating the world. We called it 'The Weave.' It was managed... woven, if you will... by the combined efforts of my people's goddess Umbra and the sheep god Ovis."

"It took me some effort to figure out the trick to drawing power in this world. By this point, I've managed to fully adapt to the way magic works here, but at first I was appreciably weaker in this world than I was in my native one. But I still don't really understand why what I'm doing works, just how to draw power here."

Creatures of my home plane were much closer to what would be hybrids on other worlds. "No, not usually," Jenyra replied, letting the cat settle into a new position. "Ember here is an ember cat, a magical creature from my world attuned to the Sun Arcanum, more specifically, fire. They usually live in very hot places, like volcanoes."

The change had been so gradual none of you had actively noticed it. Only after a few moments of discussing the flying fire cat did your eyes get drawn to how high the hedges had grown. Now well over head height. You all realized something was wrong... a moment too late.

Your eyes were just beginning to dart around for the threat, but the threat was from beneath you. Well two of you to be specific.
There was a sudden vegetative cracking sound as from below Zanzibar and Jenya leaves snapped up to enclose around them. And then the hedges themselves came alive to attack.

At the same time, Umbrasericum heard something large moving towards them from the northwest.

One of the shrubs that swipes at Ember lands a small scratch... and bursts into flames and burns to cinders.

Combat Map (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uBYrS6PcmTJKXpvn26Z3IUjgZ7g52-u0DdtA90HSuF4/edit#gid=0) (you'll want to bookmark this or something, we'll be using it for the rest of the game)

(Note: I gave the Mantraps a surprise round and advantage for surprise.)

Mantrap 1 Engulfs Jenya: The target is trapped inside the mantrap's leafy jaws. While trapped in this way, the target is blinded and restrained, has total cover from an attacks and other effects outside the mantrap, and takes [roll0] acid damage at the start of each of the target's turns. If the mantrap dies, the creature inside it is no longer restrained by it. A mantrap can engulf only one creature at a time.

Mantrap 2 Engulfs Zanzibar: The target is trapped inside the mantrap's leafy jaws. While trapped in this way, the target is blinded and restrained, has total cover from an attacks and other effects outside the mantrap, and takes [roll1] acid damage at the start of each of the target's turns. If the mantrap dies, the creature inside it is no longer restrained by it. A mantrap can engulf only one creature at a time.

Ember slays a third and later a fourth shrubbery, one with his tail and another just as a result of it attacking him.

Several shrubs, thorny or otherwise, and a long animate vine all attempt to slash or grab at Elgliastin but fail to find purchase.

Umbrasericum fares the worst as he's grabbed by a large carnivorous plant's tentacle, bitten, and then slammed into the ground.

Ember deals 48 fire damage to AS1 and 18 to AS3, killing them both.

AS5 rakes at Umbrasericum, missing.

CF grabs Umbrasericum with a tentacle (note: Umbrasericumgot half-cover from the mantrap between them), took 5 bludgeoning damage plus 3 piercing damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 13) and restrained until the grapple ends. The plant has two tentacles, each of which can grapple one target.

Umbrasericum then got pulled adjacent to CF.

CF then bites Umbrasericum, for 12 piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw against disease or become poisoned until the disease is cured. Every 24 hours that elapse, the target must repeat the saving throw, reducing its hit point maximum by ? on a failure. The disease is cured on a success. The target dies if the disease reduces its hit point maximum to 0. This reduction to the target's hit point maximum lasts until the disease is cured.
Umbrasericum succeeds on the Con save and isn't diseased/poisoned.

CF then Tentacle Slams Umbrasericum into the ground, The plant slams creatures grappled by it into each other or a solid surface. Each creature must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take ? bludgeoning damage and be stunned until the end of the plant's next turn. On a successful save, the target takes half the bludgeoning damage and isn't stunned.
Succeeding on the save, Umbrasericum takes 5 damage.

TS2 attacks Elgliastin with its Thorns, but misses.

AS7 moves from U27 to W23 and rakes Ember for 1 slashing damage. Then takes 16 fire damage and dies.

AS8 moves from X26 to X22 and rakes at Elgliastin, but misses.

AV attempts to constrict Elgliastin, but misses.

TS4 hurls thorns at Ember, but misses.

M2 Dodges.

The blast of water shreds the shrubs and the thorn slinger, which seems to be just barely clinging to life after being slammed back through the hedges to the south.
The assassin vine however seems to have weathered the spell fairly well.

AS8 & 2 die automatically (even half damage kills them).
TS4 fails its save and gets pushed south, destroying part of the hedges.
AV succeeds its save.

It's hard to tell what reaction, if any, the carnivorous flower has to suddenly losing its hold on its prey. But you can tell that while it didn't much like being slashed, it's far from pruned.

Several shrubs, including one of the big thorny ones, attack Umbrasericum to mixed results. One of the little ones rakes him a bit, but the most important part is that he winds up grabbed by another plant basically as soon as he escaped the clutches of the previous one.

Jenyra finds the inside of the mantrap painfully unpleasant, in a corrosive way.

AS10 moves from U15 to V16 and misses Umbrasericum.

M1 Dodges.

TS1 moves from X-Y 15-16 to W-X 15-16 and grabs Umbrasericum with its thorny vines. He takes 8 piercing damage and 2 acid damage.
A Medium or smaller creature adhered to the thorn slinger is also grappled by it (escape DC 11). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.

AS11 moves from X14 to W17 and misses Umbrasericum.

AS6 moves from X18 to W18 and rakes Umbrasericum for 2 slashing damage.

At the start of Jenyra's turn she takes 12 acid damage from being engulfed by the mantrap.

The mantrap's leaves briefly open up to avoid a good amount of the flame, but it doesn't avoid all of it.

Another shrub swings and misses at Umbrasericum.

Clearly being too dumb to learn by previous examples, one of the big thorny shrubs grabs Ember, harming both of them in the process.

More shrubs advance from the south. And something only heard continues advancing on the group from the northwest.

M1 succeeds on dex save vs lightning bolt, taking half damage.

AS9 misses Umbrasericum.

AS12 dashes from X29 to X22.

TS3 moves from T-U 24-25 to U-V 23-24 and grabs Ember with its thorny vines. Ember takes 6 piercing damage (after resistance), 5 acid damage, and is grappled by it.

Ember does quite a bit of damage to the mantrap encasing her master, but Jenya isn't freed quite yet. And then gets grabbed by yet another plant, this one seemingly not quite as flammable as the rest.

Elgliastin avoids the raking grasp of two bushes.

and Umbrasericum gets bitten, grabbed, and slammed into the ground by the same plant that did the same to him just moments ago.

AS5 moves from X19 to W20 and misses Elgliastin.

CF Bites Umbrasericum for 10 piercing damage and he has to make a Con save against contracting a disease. Which he succeeds on.

CF grabs Umbrasericum with a tentacle for 4 bludgeoning damage and is grappled (escape DC 13) and restrained until the grapple ends.

CF Tentacle Slams Umbrasericum into the ground, forcing him to make a Con save or take damage and be stunned. He succeeds on the save, taking half damage (which is 5 bludgeoning).

TS2 misses Elgliastin.

AV Constricts Ember for 5 bludgeoning damage (after resistance) and they're grappled (escape DC 14). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and it takes 0 poison damage (since Ember is immune) at the start of each of its turns.

"Okay. Seriously. Hurts."

Umbrasericum fades back into the shadows and reappears on top of the maze wall right to Jenrya, but above both her and the fight in general.

He starts muttering an almost song-like incantation under his breath while spinning his two larger arms in front of him as if he was weaving a web. Sickly-green threads start to gather around his claws as he does so.

He shouts the last syllable of his incantation and opens his arms wide, and the threads form a ball of webbing which streaks towards one of the the thorny plants.

The ball of webbing simultaneously liquefies and explodes over the sinister shrubbery, bathing a lot of the moving plants in acid but stopping short of Ember and Jenrya.

Vitriolic Sphere centered between AS11 and TS1. The Carnivorous Flower, the surviving Mantrap, Thorn Slingers 1 and 2, and most of the Assassin Shrubs take [roll0] acid damage right now, and [roll1] acid damage at the end of their next turn.

Umbrasericum's explosion of acid sears away the smaller shrubs, both the animate ones and some of the hedges. Even opening up part of the hedge maze to reveal another pathway.

One of the thorny shrubs manages one last, failed, attack on Elgliastin, it's flung thorns dissolving along with the main body mid-flight.

For the moment the other stands, though looks like it too is moments away from meeting the same fate. The plant entrapping Zanzibar was somewhat shielded from the acid by the smaller shrubs and the other large plant nearby seems harmed, but still relatively well intact.

I'm saying the "center" is on the corner spot where AS11 and the middle of TS1 meet.

AS5, AS6, AS9, AS10, AS11 all die, whether or not they succeed or fail.

TS1 and TS2 both fail, neither die (at least yet, the secondary damage might or might not finish them off).

M2 succeeds its save, doesn't die.

CF fails, not dead.

gryff didn't say Zanzibar was using Reckless Attack so technically the first attack was at disadvantage, so I've just used the two attack rolls he put in the discord for that. He also didn't roll the extra d4s for enlarge, so I've done that too. Mantrap dies on the first hit from Zanzibar. Given gryff didn't give a contingency for this case, I'm just going to have him attack the nearest enemy. Which is CF. Which I also rolled an attack for.
And then I also assumed he would want to use his bonus action for his off-hand attack with his claws, so I rolled all the stuff for that too.

The first attack on CF misses. The off-hand attack crits for 24 slashing damage.

Which consequently walks past the closer Zanzibar and over to Jenyra and Elgliastin and proceeds to batter Jenyra around before pulling her inside of it.

SM moves from W-X 16-17 to X-Y 20-21. It Slams Jenyra twice for 8 then 11 bludgeoning damage. Since both attacks hit, Jenyra is grappled by it. Then it Engulfs Jenyra (there was no save against this).

Ember's attacks both hit and deal damage.
TS3 takes 8 fire damage. AV takes 9 fire damage.

AV misses Elgliastin.

As Jenyra is grabbed by the shambling mound, Elgliastin lets out a shout Shiva, now! Don't hurt the pretty one! The lady of frost shifts slightly in her own bonds and opens her mouth, unleashing a piercing shriek alongside a blast of ice and freezing wind that engulfs the Assassin Vine and the shambler, barely avoiding the vulnerable fire mage.

Using my action to command Shiva to use Diamond Dust. DC 16 Dex save or take [roll0] Piercing, then the same DC Con save or take [roll1] cold, finally same DC Wis or take [roll2] thunder. A successful save results in half damage on that specific damage. Everything in a 30 ft cone becomes difficult terrain that requires a DC 12 Acrobatics to move through or fall prone. Both SM and AV should be in the line and the cone the spell describes.

Shiva's grand magical effect shatters the vine monster into tiny shards, but the shambling mass of biomatter still stands afterwards, though clearly worse for wear.

SM fails the first and second saves, succeeds on the third. And resists the cold damage.

AV fails the first and second saves, succeeds on the third. And resists the cold damage. Yup, weirdly the exact same as SM, but in this case the combined damage kills it.

Elgliastin does indeed detect magic in the area. Or more accurately that the area around her is magical. She picks up transmutation, illusion, enchantment, conjuration, and abjuration magic. This all largely tracks with the experience of a magical maze she's had so far, like the group having not noticed changes in the maze itself until directly confronted with those changes. It certainly seems more like it's a magical space than a spell being cast. But that's about all she can glean at the moment.

Having agreed to set off without splitting up, the group proceeds further into the maze. Which slowly gets thicker and takes on a more fungal nature, eventually with even many of the trees being replaced with giant mushrooms. After about an hour of attempting to hunt for game you all more or less realize that it would have been a catastrophically bad decision to split up as the chances you would have been able to find each other after splitting up in a magical maze would have been very slim.
And then another hour goes by, and still no sign of wild game. At about which point you've all figured out to ask yourself the question, "Why would there be wild game in a magical maze that we found on some old houses' back yard?"
Another half hour or so goes by and you finally spot something. But it's not game. It's facing away from you and may be slumbering, as far as you can tell. It's a large (as in large creature sized) bulbous gray-green sphere floating about five feet off the group with what appears to be several eye-stalks sprouting from it.

Umbrasericum's eyes go a little wide. "Oh, snake dung."

"Okay, what that is, is a Gas Spore. It's not exactly powerful, but it explodes into a cloud of toxic spores when it's killed. Which, I am given to understand, can happen in a sufficiently stiff breeze."

"It's probably waiting for us to attack it and set it off. That gives us time to act. The best counter would be for you guys to run back the way we came while I climb that hedge wall so that I can get out of range without letting it out of my sight. Then when you guys are safe, I blast the thing."

The group hears the rustling of creatures closing in on them from seemingly every direction, including a few that run into view. One of which Ember whips it's tail at, but misses as it Zanzibar is in the way.

But the foes that are most alarming are the pair that were hiding in the hedges right besides them. One of which, a colorful trio of flowers reseasing spores and acid at Zanzibar and Elgliastin who both evade them, but then grabs Elgliastin with its leaves. The hold seem less strong than problematic as Elgliastin quickly discovered the leaves are coated in a stinging toxic substance.

And then there's the big purple fungus that strikes out at everyone (except Umbra who is out of reach), afflicting them with some kind of mild semi-magical life rotting effect. Ember strikes back at it, which seems to almost, but not quite, do it in.

TF ceased being hidden and multiattacks with orange blossom, yellow blossom, and red blossom.

-Orange Blossom vs Zanzibar: Zanzibar succeeds his Constitution save.

-Yellow Blossom vs Elgliastin: Elgliastin succeeds on her Dexterity save.

-Red Blossom vs Elgliastin: Hits Elgliastin, she takes 1 piercing damage and is grappled (escaped DC 11). Until this grapple ends, the target takes 2d4 poison damage at the start of each of its turns. The red blossom can grapple only one target at a time. Another creature within reach of the tri-flower frond can use its action to end the grapple on the target.

YZ1 Dashes from AG18 to AJ15.

Zanzibar seethes in anger, letting out a ferocious roar as he rushes over to a tri colored flower creature and swing his sword chopping into it and it collapses. He then moves to the other hedge and strikes at the violent fungal creature and his sword once again strikes it.

Jenyra and Zanzibar quickly cut down the nearby plants before more move in.

One of the tree sized mushrroms comes to life and slams a branch into Umbrasericum almost hard enough to knock him off the hedges.

Another unassuming plant releases a cloud of spores that places Jenrya and Elgliastin into a trace that leaves them with an overwhelming urge to come closer to it.

A zombie and two plants-things attack Valefor, to no avail.

YZ2 moves from AG20 to AE19. Misses Valefor with slam attack.

Ve2 Dashes from AD4 to AD16.

Ty moves from AE13 to AE17. Misses Valefor with bite.

AZ reveals itself to be animate and Slams Umbrasericum for 11 bludgeoning damage.

MSp4 Dashes from V22 to V26.

YM reveals itself to be animate and unleashes Yellow Musk upon all four humanoids in the party.
The creeper's flowers release a strong musk that targets all humanoids within 30 feet of it. Each target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the creeper for 1 minute. A creature charmed in this way does nothing on its turn except move as close as it can to the creeper. A creature charmed by the creeper can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
-Elgliastin fails, Zanzibar succeeds, Jenyra fails, Umbrasericum succeeds.

Z1 Dashes from AM7 to AK5.

Z3 Dashes from AO8 to AQ12.

C Dashes from X-Y 5-6 to V-W 10-11.

Umbra's frost easily hits the plant, which appears more resilient than he may have assumed it would be.

Note: Not saying it has resistance or immunity to cold damage, just indicating it doesn't look half dead or something from 5 damage.

There was a lot of shuffling around and the party was beset upon by spores and awful stenches as more foes closed in on them.

YZ1 Dashes from AJ15 to AH22.

MSp3 Dashes from Y26 to AC26.

B teleports from AE20 to AC23 and uses Hallucination Spores on Zanzibar. Who succeeds on his save against them.

MA Dashes from AC27 to AC33.

MSp1 Dashes from T25 to T21.

CF Dashes from AQ-AR 13-14 to AJ-AK 18-19 and spawns Z5 in AJ20.

Z5 moves from AJ20 to AG23 and misses Ember.

Z4 moves from AK20 to AH23 and misses Ember.

Z2 Dashes from AL3 to AJ11.

MSp2 Dashes from AB25 to AA28.

VC moves from Z21 to AE22 and releases a cloud of spores: A 15-foot-radius cloud of toxic spores extends out from the vegepygmy chief. The spores spread around corners. Each creature in that area that isn't a plant must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned. While poisoned in this way, a target takes 2d8 poison damage at the start of each of its turns. A target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Zanzibar saves, Jenyra saves, Elgliastin saves.
Everything else is immune/out of range.

MSo Dashes from AB-AC 28-29 to AF-AG 32-33.

Ve3 moves from AB14 to AA19 and misses Valefor.

Elgliastin starts her turn within 10 feet of a zombie made by the Corpse Flower (all the regular zombies) or the Corpse Flower itself and thus has to make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, unless the creature is a construct or undead. On a failed save, the creature is incapacitated until the end of the turn. Creatures that are immune to poison damage or the poisoned condition automatically succeed on this saving throw. On a successful save, the creature is immune to the stench of all corpse flowers for 24 hours.
Elgliastin fails her save and does nothing on her turn (which she would have anyway), but she succeeds on her save vs yellow musk at the end of her turn.

Valefor (presumably) does nothing on their turn. (Unless you want them to just move an take AoOs for some reason but I don't know why you'd want that?)

Jenyra starts her turn within 10 feet of a zombie made by the Corpse Flower (all the regular zombies) or the Corpse Flower itself. She succeeds on her save and is now immune to the effect.
She then moves from AE23 to AF23 and ends her turn. She fails her saves against yellow musk.

More foes close in while others all fail to land their attacks against various members of the group.

YZ2 misses Valefor.

The shuffling of more vegetative foes draws closer as a number finally close with the party. What must be the source of the foul smelling zombies rounds a corner and lashes rapidly at Ember with its slimy tentacles even at it unleashes another zombie to accost Ember's master.

Two large mushroom creatures, one quite large indeed, pass beneath Umbrasericum, though thankfully (for him) they seem unable to reach him up above.

I forgot to note in my last post that YM regenerated 10 hp at the start of its turn.

YZ1 takes 9 fire damage at the start of its turn. Then it misses Ember.

MSp3 Dashes from AC26 to Z29.

MA Dashes from AC33 to AG27.

MSp1 Dashes from T21 to W19.

CF moves from AJ&AK 18&19 to AI&AJ 22&23. It then creates Z6 in AK23.
Then it makes three tentacle attacks at Ember.
Two hit. Ember takes a total of 9 bludgeoning damage and 0 poison damage after resistance/immunity.
CF takes 9 fire damage from touching Ember.

Z6 moves from AK23 to AG24 and Slams Jenyra for 2 bludgeoning damage.

Z5 Slams Elgliastin for 2 bludgeoning damage.

Z4 misses Ember.

Z2 Dashes from AJ11 to AE18.

MSp2 Dashes from AA28 to Z32.

VC regenerates 5 hp at the start of its turn. It attacks Zanzibar with its spear twice, hitting once for 2 piercing damage (after resistance).

MSo Dashes from AF&AG 32&33 to AF&AG 25&26.

Ve3 misses Valefor.

At the start of Elgliastin's turn she saves vs Stench of Death from Z5 and is immune to it for 24 hours.
