View Full Version : Getting in Quickly, Unleashing Full-Attack

After reading through the Abjurant Champion debates, I had a thought. How many ways could a gish reliably get in close to an opponent and unleash a full-attack in the same round?

The only one I could think of would be a Quickened Teleport, which seems legit. I was wondering, could this work on a sorcerer with the Rapid Metamagic feat? In the Quicken Spell feat, it says that it cannot be used on spontaneously-cast spells. Would Rapid Metamagic make it possible?

Metamagic Specialist will do the job too.

As will Travel Devotion. It works for scouts, it'll work for duskblades.

@v: A feat from Complete Champion, available to anyone who worships a god that offers the Travel domain: Once per day, you enter Speedy Mode for one minute, and can move your speed as a swift action.

Metamagic Specialist, Travel Devotion;

What and where are these?

The current simplest way is to take a level in Barbarian using the Spirit Lion Totem alternate class features in Complete.. Champion, I believe. That gets you Pounce in trade for Fast Movement, which doesn't hurt the gish much because he's got all kinds of magic he can use to get around faster. I suspect the question is intended to ask about how he might do it magically, however..

For a divine-based gish, there's Lion's Charge, a Druid 3/Ranger 2 Swift spell that gives you pounce for one round. Although I've no idea why somebody with the requisite 5 Druid levels would bother with this instead of Wildshaping into something that has pounce. A psi-gish could use Hustle to give himself an extra move action and then full-attack with his normal allotment, but if you're looking for that you may as well just play a straight Psychic Warrior and use Psionic Lion's Charge or both.

A quickened Greater Slide can move you up to 20 feet. If you have a friendly creature or an enemy standing next to whatever you want to attack, you could use quickened Benign or Baleful Transposition to swap yourself into place to strike. Other than that, I'm not aware of any arcane spells that can either grant Pounce or allow a character to move as a swift action and still be able to act.

Does anybody have (or know of) clarification on the Quicken+Rapid Metamagic issue? Are they allowed to work together?

It certainly ought to let you use Quicken, since it's taking away the obstacle that keeps sorcerers from using it.

Metamagic Specialist is from the Player's Handbook II (and specifically allows Quicken), Travel Devotion is from Complete Champion.

Rapid Metamagic should work, since the problem in the rules is that metamagicing a spontaneous spell is a Full Round action. Anything that lets you use metamagic spontaneously as a Standard action should allow Quicken to work normally.

On that note, look at the feat Arcane Preparation in Complete Arcane. It lets you prepare and cast a spell as a Wizard would, complete with metamagic modifications and a Standard action casting time.

Quickened Dimension Hop is the easiest spell I can think of (level 6 spell after the +4). Move 5 feet per two CLs, PHB II.

Rapid Metamagic, Accelerate Metamagic, and Arcane Preparation all work as far as I know. Arcane Preparation is not as good as the other options, particularly Rapid Metamagic, but it was also the first option that gave sorcerers that kind of option.

There's some cheap boots in MIC that allow you to 3/day teleport 60 ft. within line of sight or some such. They cost <= 1000gp IIRC.

If your gish involves at least one wizard level, the conjurer's alternate class feature allows for immediate short-range teleportation. Very short range, mind you.

Gishes dont full attack anymore.

Gishes quicken true strike full power attack diamond nightmare blade declaring their enemies take 4d8 + str x 6 + +240 damage[assuming +7 equiv longsword and 30 str total].

Anyway, tome of battle is your friend, just buy manuvers.
